[0:00] how's that see that i'm certified no certifiable oh by the way um when visited my dad last week and i or a week ago i don't know when it was but he gave me some bibles that i put on the bottom shelf out there talked to pastor about it but they're giant print so if you know somebody needs a giant print bible it isn't that giant i still need my glasses to read them so it's not you know it's not the two words per page you know i'm saying i've seen those super giants but so there's some of those down there if you find somebody needs the bible amen first timothy chapter six i want to read a few verses here look at a couple passages but uh let's start in verse one let let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor that the name of god and his doctrine be not blasphemed and they that have believing masters let them not despise them because they are brethren but rather do them service because they are faithful and beloved partakers of the benefit these things teach and exhort if any man teach otherwise and consent not to wholesome words even the words of our lord jesus christ and to the doctrine which is according to godliness i want to pay attention to that word godliness he is proud knowing nothing but uh doting about questions and strifes of words whereof cometh envy strife railings evil surmisings now is that dotting or doting that word anybody know doting okay i i probably believe believe uh pastor waspure on that one because he's you know to me to me you're an english major when you talk about adverbs and other kind of words you know i just i'm just gonna be looking at you and when i make a mistake i look at you and you go like that fix me up i mean some people did okay in school and some people didn't all right verse five perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth uh supposing that gain is godliness from such withdraw thyself but godliness with contentment is great gain for we brought nothing into this world and it is certain we can carry nothing out and having food let us be there with content but they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare and into many foolish and hurtful lust which drown men in destruction and perdition for the love of money is the root of all evil which while some coveted after they have air from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows but thou oh man of god flee these things and follow after righteousness godliness godliness faith love patience meekness let's pray father we are glad to be in church this morning and very thankful to have thy word i i am god i don't know what i would be doing today if i didn't believe the bible if i didn't believe you had it somewhere where we could grab a hold of it and touch it and and read it and believe it so lord appreciate that please stir our hearts today and give us some things we can take away and uh use this week in jesus name amen okay so chapter six here uh you can see it was talking about some servitude stuff in the beginning there and you know that's still in the bible i understand some people just really get they just can't get they just can't believe that whatever but it's still there and uh you know that's just if you start reading that thing a little more you start realizing that this is doctrine but um so it goes on and and i want to i want to take i want to zero in on verse five and six um so we'll look at that real quick perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth supposing that gain is godliness from such withdraw thyself but godliness with contentment is great gain so the so the the word i want to look at today and this

[4:02] morning is going to be contentment all right i know that's probably not real popular today you know especially in prosperous america it's not really something people are looking forward to uh doing or paying attention to matter of fact i might have even said it this morning your heart might have dropped i don't know you know maybe maybe you're well contentment that's not something i'm interested in but um so contentment is uh something that we ought to have i mean if you look at this right here it actually says godliness with contentment is great gain and we're not talking about you're gaining something from something you do spiritually you know you're winning souls you're coming to church we're talking about something that's great gain this morning i would assume that because of that it's probably a good thing to look at today it's probably something good to look at and probably really good to to pay attention to and see how it is in your life so in verse five it says uh it says supposing that gain is godliness so you know that's that's a big thing today i don't know if you're familiar with the prosperity gospel everything from the prosperity gospel to the bible illiterate and everybody in between has this notion that gain is godliness so you know they they got their their lives as far as they're concerned you know they live on on knob hill there and they say that hey i must be godly because look what i have right anybody ever met anybody like that sure all day long right they're out there by the by the times well you know it's something they suppose it's not it's not it's not something we believe here right nobody believes that here that gain right gain is okay just want to make sure we don't believe that here okay so in the in this in this prosperity gospel this thing this thing goes you know in this i mean uh not being content and and thinking that gain is godliness this is in every walk of life every walk of life it's not like it's just on you know these people that are rich say in this world but even those that are not so rich still have the same problem of thinking that gain gain is godliness so in verse look at verse 6 it says but godliness with contentment is great gain the scripture says that it's great gain this morning and uh contentment is not a um contentment is not foreign to the bible right if you've read your bible much you've read across this this uh this word hopefully you understand this word and it's uh and it's something that means something to you something that you look at you pay attention to you ought to be content you know you can you can run across the person that's not content you understand that you you can pretty much mark them like that and it don't take you long you you have a conversation with somebody boom you can you can get them out of the way i mean then you can tell you're not content and i got two foster babies one's pretty content the other one's not can you guess which one it is i don't know maybe you can't maybe you can't if you've seen them both very long you know i mean i can take leo and i can sit leo down there and most of the time he's just content joey on the other hand never he's just not the opposite so that you know that's a good example you could see in kids but you know unfortunately you could see in adults just as much so it goes on in verse in verse 7 it says for we brought nothing into this world you understand that right right it says um for we brought nothing into this world so you see the four there the four is there because it ought to be like pretty obvious that contentment is something that's um that you ought to have and it's something that uh because

[8:08] you didn't bring anything into this world and it says and it is certain you can't bring anything out you hear about these people that think they're gonna they're trying to get it out with them right you've heard of these people right i read some stuff and everybody's got a different reason for doing it but um you know they they bury themselves with stuff you've heard of people burying themselves in in cars uh burying gold with them you know i've read some stuff where the guy the guy buried himself with stuff that you know he just in case i can pull this out when i get to wherever i'm going i want to make sure i have a few bucks i want to make sure i have you know the bible is pretty clear and we're by believers so we don't have a problem with this but it says um it is certain it is certain you're not taking anything out of here so i want you to think i want you to look at yourself for the last say the last week we don't go too far how content are you how content were you this last week think about that so you know look at contaminating your life don't take it too far back just take a take a quick glance at yourself and you know how i always say is is brother pilkington said it when he was here that that thing that came to your mind that was probably it that was probably it you know i don't know see what you see what you wanted this week see what you googled for hey even prayed about you know i met pastor dave i remember when he was he said you know you ought to pray for a million dollars at least once right remember anybody remember that because you get to heaven and you and the lord say and you say you know god you never blessed with a million dollars you never asked wouldn't that be something but you know there's people that probably pray for that all the time because they believe gain is godliness so they're looking to show how godly they are your god please give me a million dollars to show these people how godly i am you think you got problems they think gain is godliness you know help me to be more godly they think their light shining is their prosperity and they'll never be content they'll never be content so just glance back at your life this week let's see how content you've been hebrews chapter 13 let's look at a couple other passages hebrews chapter 13 you know if you had one takeaway today just one just think of the word contentment along with godliness now we should probably have spent some time looking at godliness first so i'm just going to assume that you're godly all right so just if you take away anything from this morning you remember anything just remember the word contentment all right just remember that word contentment so this week you know write it down somewhere so you know just a week long just content how content am i how content am i because contentment with this godliness is great gain it's great gain so content what is it you know i i tell people all the time you know google it you want to find out what something is google it you know and i i believe in the bible definition don't get me wrong i i'm always i want to know what the bible definition is i i i'm not believing google just to make sure i set that straight google's not my my all to but i tell you what i found a lot on google that's good you know how do i how do i uh how do i keep the bugs off my hibiscus i google it it worked it worked they got some things right on there so they say a peaceful here's what content is uh if you if you're syrian you know a peaceful happiness satisfied a peaceful happiness and satisfied you know i so i i you know i did that but i wanted to

[12:14] see what the bible had to say so i looked at the word contentment it's not it's not in the bible a whole lot of times so wouldn't take you long to look at the verses and figure out what what what it's talking about so now the contentment i could see it where peaceful satisfied happy well you know there might not be some things there may be some things that happen in your life that may not be real happy you know i understand you know i can think back you know i think the brother spurge you know his wife her husband died uh first husband died of i want to say with luke gerritz maybe i mean it was it was miserable miserable you can be content you may not be the happiest person on earth but contentment with godliness is great gain so you know and there'll be some things that happen in your life that that um at first you may even get mad at god about it and you need to get past that but you know we're all flesh right i don't know that i ever i've ever had anything happen in my life that what i got mad at god about but man i've seen some things happen in other people's lives i thought man glad that wasn't me just thank lord to me i just pray for them and if they get a little sideways and stuff try to have grace on them and pray for them to get through the thing but you know a lot of times they do and they settle into that content time that's what they need to be godliness with contentment is great gain you may not be happy about it and even at first it may rub you wrong but you do real well to settle into that content place how's your content level how is it are you one that you always got to have more you always got to have something else you know give me some examples you know i don't want to pick yours so i'd like you to give me the examples of of what somebody might not be content about can you think of something you know i thought about i thought about israel i thought of a lot of things you know i thought about you know these somebody who doesn't have enough motorcycles you know and that's oh but he doesn't have enough camera oh um i don't want to say those things so china that's why i was trying to get you to help me because somebody might not they'll go hey they don't know that about me children of israel children of israel right with the manna they were not content but it was good i mean how much more do you want god is bringing the food down for you right there on the ground it's not like you got to go very far you just got to walk out there and gather what do you want them to do put on your plate so they're not they're not content ah we got more got to deal with this man or more that's a problem that's a problem that's not good so i don't know how you are i am a creature of habit i can pretty much do the same thing eat the same thing just about every day it's crazy as it sounds you know i've been doing salads for years and you know i just that's what i do for lunch i'm happy about it and every day they're just as good i used to do peanut butter sandwiches works for me three or four years later i'm going hey man it's still good you may not be like that i don't know but you know you know sometimes uh some people they they're not content they need they need something more now

[16:17] they need something more right or something different i don't know i don't know what it may be but how about a proverbs chapter 24 look at proverbs 24 just talking about being content proverbs 24 and 21 it says my son fear thou the lord and the king and meddle not with them that are given to change some people they just gotta have something different all the time i don't like the same thing i gotta have something different that's the way them children of israel them children of israel were i don't want this matter anymore i want something different you know we're in america i understand that but other places in the world they're just happy to pound some of that grain and make the same cake they've made for 10 years and have something to eat today and you know a lot of them are probably content they don't know any better and there's nothing else there they've settled into that and they're content but yeah that's in america hey man i just i gotta have something different i gotta have something more you know that uh in and out uh what else you got oh slaters oh all right what else you got chilies oh what else you got oh man how many more there have to be for you contentment godliness with contentment is great gain you know rockefeller you probably know what i'm going to say how many know what i'm going to say we said it a lot of times when they asked him how much how much uh how much is enough you know he was richest man in the world at the time whatever how much is enough he said just a little bit more is that how you are you know i think about me and you know my work you know i've gotten some raises and i've gotten you know done something got some money whatever and then i always think am i like that how much is it no just just a little bit more i mean when you're in the billions and the millions i mean what do you you're not doing anything with it anyway so you're still sitting there going just a little bit more what not 29 million 30 million i mean billion come on but it just shows you that contentment is something that you need to pay attention to it's not going to happen by accident even the people that you would think should be content or not and then somebody would think you should be content and maybe you're not godliness with contentment is great gain let's look at hebrews chapter 13 hebrews chapter 13 hebrews chapter 13 and uh look at verse 5 it says let your conversation be without covetousness and be content with such things as you have for he has said i will never leave thee nor forsake thee so it got the word uh contentment right there content being content and uh you see this other word that's kind of the uh what is that word the antonym right that was pretty good right for you english majors antonym who comes up with these words anyway i mean my mind just says hey the opposite but see when i say antonym

[20:17] i gotta go to the dictionary look up what it means and then it takes me right to what i already know the opposite so covetousness would be the opposite of content that's how it works right there in that verse so when you're looking to see how content you are you gotta you also want to see how covetous you may be and the other word that has to do with being covetous would just be lust lust now i can relate to that i understand that work i understand the lust word you know lust is two-thirds of your problem anybody know what i'm talking about it's two-thirds of your problem the bible says all that is in the world all that is in the world this is it you ready these are your three problems lust of the flesh lust of the eyes and the pride of life that's it that's it you put everything right in those three categories there you go real simple there's your problems how many how many think you understand the lust of the eyes some people think they understand the lust of the eyes the lust of the eyes is the eye wants to look get it and the way you see that is you look at what you look at take something else that's not exactly like that and you don't want to look at it why because the eye wants to see that but lust lust is the would be the opposite or the enemy of being content look at a

[22:00] James James chapter 4 here's a good here's a good place that talks about this lust versus contentment James chapter 4 and I want to start in verse 1 there it says from whence come wars and fighting among you come they not hence even of your lust that war in your members ye lust and have not ye kill and desire to have and cannot obtain you fight and war yet you have not because you ask not you ask and receive not because you ask amiss that you may consume it upon your lust ye adulterers and adulteresses know you not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God and remember what I just said all that is in the world the lust of the flesh the lust of the eyes and the pride of life are you a friend of the world you know God said friendship of the world is enmity with God if you didn't get that he told you that again he said whosoever will be a friend of this world is the enemy of God and two-thirds of what you'll be dealing with is lust so just to take away this morning
