Humans seek advantage and benefit - and complain about advantage and benefit.

Despite humans being sinful, disinterested, and hostile, God caused His word written to be a public revelation.

You are under sin.

In the face of God's perfect justice and His perfect sentence against you, there will be nothing you can say.

God's revelation of what is right and wrong reveals your sin and your need. but it cannot not make you right with Him.

Despite humans being sinful, disinterested, and hostile, God accomplished real, eternal salvation in the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The gospel is good news from God about the Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ is: God the Son of God, fully human, the one promised by God, and fully vindicated by His resurrection.

God's good news is a call to you personally to the obedience of faith.

You do not live in the hope of belonging, BUT, live in hope because you belong!

You are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, for God's glory alone.

Romans 13: 8-14 "Transcendent Hope" Advent and Christmas 2024 December 8, 2024

Notes 1a. The Triune God is the ultimate author of the Bible.

1b. God's Word Written (The Bible) tradition, reason, creeds, councils, popes, theologians

1c. Only the Triune God could, and did, speak a word which is relevant and necessary to every people group and every age.

1d. We are to listen to the Bible, accepting its instruction, and seek in our understanding to be in harmony with our local church, the church around the world, and the church throughout time.

God's grace comes to you in Christ so that, “saved, welcomed, and hopeful you will be.”

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. (Romans 15:13 ESV)

4a. Optimism is rooted in the world of “one dang thing after another.” Biblical hope is rooted in the Triune God.

4b. While time and circumstance dash human hopes, the Triune God wants you to know His promises to you, and to know that He will always keep His promises.

4c. In His grace, at this moment, Jesus Christ has welcomed you - yes, the real you.

4d. In His grace, at the moment of your death, your eyes will close to this world, but your eyes will open see the new earth, and you will see Christ Jesus Himself, look you in the eyes, and welcome you in.

When people put you down or are hostile to you because you are a Christian, bear witness to Jesus anyway!

You were designed to worship the true and living God.

After the fall, every human being worships idols.

The question is never, "Will I worship?" The question is always, "Who or what am I worshipping?"

The One God created one universe, and one man, and from that man, one humanity.

Tragically, God is very, very close to you yet too far away for you to reach Him.

In your heart you know that death is not natural - death feels like the judgment of God.

The human story is a tragedy, but Jesus came to change the story of your life from a tragedy to a comedy!

God's pure unfailing love for you is all a gift, it is never needy.

Points:

Everything from the big story of the Old Testament to its tiniest details are fulfilled in the birth, life, work, and person of Jesus of Nazareth.

Jesus is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords of every tribe and nation. Charles III is just a king.

Envy is both a common, deadly vice that robs you of joy and makes you experience the truth as offensive and painful.

The object of opening the mind, as of opening the mouth, is to shut it again on something solid. (G. K. Chesterton)

Filled with envy, you want to knock others down, down, down. Jesus Christ humbled Himself to death upon a cross - love to the loveless shown that you might loved and lovely be.

To know Christ Jesus and to grow in Christ-likeness you need to put all your envy to death and choose to grow in open mindedness.

There is a holy mystery in how the infallible, authoritative, life-giving word of the Lord comes to fallible, self-centred, death-doomed human beings - me included!

A. Only Jesus is sinless, therefore only He can save you.

B. The word of the Lord comes into you for your good and His glory without turning you into His puppet. You still sin, yet sacrificial love blooms in you as well.

C. God's infallible word does not make you infallible, it humbles you to accept that you are fallible.

D. Since you are not infallible, you need to learn His infallible word with the help of the Holy Spirit and other Christ-followers.

Music is not a meaningless accident whose power is a delusion, a sin, or a trap.

The Triune God inextricably wove music into human beings.

The Triune God spoke and the universe came into being.

The created order reflects the goodness, glory, justice, beauty, and love of the Triune God.

The human problem is not that you have desires and pursue purposes - it is that you cannot have desires or purposes without them being tainted by a rejection of God and an exalting of yourself.

You are a mystery to yourself, but you are not a mystery to the Triune God - he sees your heart and your deeds.

The anthem of your Canadian heart - I need to be King; I need a powerful entourage; I need to be a powerful warrior; I need powerful techniques and tools.

"Behold the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His steadfast love, that He may deliver their soul from death, and keep them alive in famine." Psalm 33:18-19, ESV.

If you are more biblical than the Bible, you are not biblical. (1-3)

If you are less biblical than the Bible, you are not biblical (4-22)

Be very careful of saying about a biblical narrative, "Go and do likewise." (Matt 27:5)

There is only one true hero in the Bible, someone who is unfailingly courageous, wise and good. His name is Jesus.

A wiser question to ask as you read a biblical narrative: "Is it I Lord?" (Matt 26:20-22)

No one has a right to God's presence and love.

No one is so good that they do not need God's mercy and grace, and no one is so bad that they will not freely and lavishly receive God's mercy and grace when they humbly call out to Him.

The good news of the person and work of Jesus is that it turns your heart from "Remember me Lord!" to "My Lord and Saviour remembers me!"

Since these are words that the Triune God speaks, they are inerrant and authoritative.

"... you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man or woman of God may be complete, equipped for every good work." 2 Timothy 3:15b-17 ESV.

Father, please make the person of Jesus, His completed work, and His words, ever more precious to my heart, so that in the power of the Holy Spirit I will walk free in the fear of God.

Sin is an ever deeper descent into the vain and ruinous belief that you are god.

The fear of God is an ever deepening, existential knowing of the difference between the Triune God and you, so that there is no confusion or (imagined) co-mingling on your part.

The life-giving grace of God in Christ crucified changes everything.

Father, please make the person of Jesus, His completed work, and His words, ever more precious to my heart, so that in the power of the Holy Spirit I will walk free in the fear of God.

The Lord Jesus Christ wants you to walk the path of forgiveness with Him.

As the forgiveness of Jesus becomes more real to your heart, He will deepen you, ground you, draw you, and propel you to forgive.

The gospel forms you to be a person of the truth who rejects lies. (Prov 1:9)

God says “Mine” so you will have a home.

There is no square inch of reality that the Triune God does not say "Mine."

The Triune God is real, so He acts in real history, so He can be really known.

Jesus is forming the real you to follow Him and make Him known in the real world.

When you pray according to His word, the Lord is slowly fitting you for the new heavens and the new earth.

When you pray according to His word, the Lord bestows on you the gift of causality.

When you pray according to His word, He forms you to right-size the world.

When you pray according to His word, the Lord is storing up courage in you for those times when you are afraid.

Prayer and thinking are not the same, but they are natural and necessary partners.

When you had forsaken the true and living God, Jesus came to die forsaken by God, so that you could truly live as His adopted child.

You have a longing and a yearning to be in a relationship of unfailing love that is good and true and realer than real.

You come into His presence to know Him as the Triune God, receive Grace from Him, and respond in a worthy manner.

To follow the Lord involves a crucial and inescapable inter-generational dimension.

The Lord does not want more Canadians, He wants to adopt more children to glorify and enjoy Him forever.

On Friday afternoon, April 3, 33 AD, Jesus died.

On Saturday evening, April 4, 33 AD some women bought spices to cover the stench of Jesus' decomposing body.

With the first faint light of dawn, April 5, 33 AD, some women left for the tomb of Jesus to put additional spices on His body and cover up the stench of decomposition.

On the morning of April 5, 33 AD, some women found the stone rolled away from Jesus' tomb, and His body was gone.

On the morning of April 5, 33 AD, an angel told the women that Jesus had been resurrected from death.

On Friday afternoon, April 3, 33 AD death appeared to swallow Jesus. On Sunday April 5, 33 AD, people began to learn that Jesus had swallowed death.

Jesus confers grace - Triune God given, life-giving grace - to the unworthy.

Your only hope in life and death is the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.

For pagan Rome, crucifixion was a symbol of their glory, majesty, and might - it was not a flaw to repent of. 2A. You feel god-like when you mock. 2B. Mocking quietly moves from being a slippery slope to a fun toboggan ride. 2C. You cannot mock and love. 2D. When you mock, you abandon seeking to know truth. 2E. Mocking stirs up strife.

It is because Jesus did not save Himself that He can save you.

Jesus tasted all there is to taste of the cause, judgment, punishment and reality of death - and He defeated death in His resurrection.

Your only hope in life and death, is that by repentance from sin, and faith in Jesus, you will be included in His victory over sin and death.

Beware of using "cleverness" to try and cover up your unfaithfulness.

It is far too common to invoke a curse or make an oath to try and cover up wrongdoing.

The curse that you deserved fell on Him, and the blessing He deserved, He put on you and in you.

It is real and true. He does not weigh your merits. He pardons your offenses.

If Peter the Apostle fell, so will you. So will your brother and sister in Christ. If the Lord's grace was greater than Peter's fall, His grace will be greater for you and for and for your brother and sister in Christ as well.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ grounds, draws, and fuels honest self-examination, repentance, and amendment of life.

It is because Jesus did not betray love and justice that betrayers and the betrayed can be made right with the Triune God.

When you are betrayed and mocked, you can pour out your sorrows and your fears to the one who knows the full sting of being mocked and betrayed - Jesus.

When you put your trust in Jesus to be your Saviour and Lord, He saves you from "the people of the lie," and makes you a citizen of His realm of truth.

When Jesus died, it was the Humble One dying for the proud, the Faithful One dying for the betrayers, the Truth Himself dying for the followers of the lie. Prayers A. Ask the Lord to make the gospel so real to your heart, that in every facet of your life, you will recognize and reject lies. B. Ask the Lord to make the gospel so real to your heart, that in every facet of your life, you will seek to humbly know the truth, believe the truth, and speak the truth. C. Ask the Lord to make the gospel so real to your heart, that you will stop flattering yourself too much to detect or hate your own sin. D. Ask the Lord to make the gospel so real to your heart, that you will not be so quick to condemn the weakness and failures of others.

Jesus' prayer is not hurtful foolishness - it is deep and beautiful wisdom.

Your cup is the accumulated wrong that you are responsible for - and the Lord's just wrath at the wrong that you are responsible for.

The death of Jesus Christ on the cross is Him taking your place and drinking your cup.

Until you see Him face-to-face, you are weak, complex, divided - and held in the palm of His hand.

Abba, Father, from the depths of Your love, Your Son drank my cup of sin and Your just wrath at my sin. Please fix my heart, on His once-for-all sacrifice, so that I will pray boldly, knowing that all things are possible for you; and that I will also pray humbly saying, "Yet not what I will, but what You will." In Jesus Name, AMEN.

Three Attitudes to Develop.

When Satan tempts me to despair, I will remember that my Saviour drang the cup of God's wrath against me down to the dregs.

When Satan tempts me to despair, I will ask my heavenly Father to help me and I will pray, "Not my will but Your will be done."

Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which Your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when He shall come again in His glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through Him who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. AMEN.

Because the Triune God is love, He designed human beings to be loved and to love.

In every human being you can see the truth that you are designed - and the truth that the design is bent or broken.

In love He came to save you. In love He walks with you. In love He will come to judge the living and the dead, and bring in the new heaven and earth.

Gripped by the Gospel, cast off your works of darkness. Put on the armour of light. Walk in the dying of the night to the glory of God and the good of people.
