Ephesians 4v11-16
Pastors equip the saints, so the saints build the body.

Pastors equip the saints – v11-12

… so the saints build the body – v12-16

All of us serving and speaking so all of us grow to be like Jesus together.

Who: Everyone – v12, v13, v16

How: Serving and Speaking – v12, v15

To what end: collective Christlikeness – v13, v15, v16

Questions for reflection/discussion:

According to Paul what’s the flow of how the church grows?

What impact would it have if some in the Ephesian church increased their service and speaking?

How might Ephesians 4v1-11 impact how we arrive at church (on zoom or in person)?

Introduction

Our Eternal Purpose: The Great Commandment

“Everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory” (Isaiah 43:7; See also Ephesians 1:11-12, 3:21, Revelation 4:11))

“‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength… You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:28-31)

Our Specific Mission: The Great Commission

• The Old Testament (‘Creation Work’): Genesis 1:28

Exodus 1:7,12,20

• The New Testament (‘New Creation Work’): Matthew 28:18-20 (See also Luke 24:45-47, Acts 1:8, 2 Peter 3:9)

Therefore:
The Mission of the Church = Making Disciples (Evangelism + Edification)

Acts 2:47, 4:4, 5:28, 6:1, 6:7, 9:31, 12:24, 16:5 (see Colossians 1:6,10)

Implications
a) For Churches
b) For Individuals

“Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labour is not in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:58)

‘The day of the assembly/church’ (Ex 19ff)
• Deut 4:10 (see Deut 9:10, 10:4, 18:16)

The Church is The People
• Acts 12:1,5, 20:28
• “All the churches of the Gentiles give thanks as well. Greet also the church in their house.” (Rom 16:4-5)

The Universal Church
• “And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body” (Eph 1:22-23)
• “Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her” (Eph 5:25; see also Heb 12:23)

The Local Church
• “to the church of God that is in Corinth” (see also Rom 16:4-5, Rev 2-3)

Implications
• We belong to each other
• We need each other

Why Does the Church Meet?
• Deut 4:10

Why it doesn’t meet…!
• Heb 10:19-22
• “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship” (Rom 12:1ff; see also Jn 4:21-23, Heb 12:28-13:17)

Downward (Deut 4:10; See also Eph 4:11-12)
Implication: Come to church to be equipped!

Outward
• “Consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” (Heb 10:25; see also 1 Cor 11:17,18,20,33,34, 14:23,26)
Implication: Come to church to encourage!
