In the Scripture that informs today’s message, we see the Psalmist emphatically pleading with the Lord to act on his nation’s behalf for the Lord’s glory alone. When we forget the God-dimension in our crises, we respond wrongly, and the result is that we deepen or prolong our crises. In the opening verses of the book of Ruth, there is a man by the name of Elimelech, and we are told of a crisis he faced and how he responded. In today’s sermon, we will consider this account of Elimelech, his circumstances, choices, and consequences. Let’s open our hearts and allow the Lord to use this account to help us to appropriately respond to him in our times of crises.

In chapter 14, Paul provides us with clear instructions to how we must live in grace towards other believers when it comes to our different opinions in matters of conscience. As we hear God’s word today, let us posture our hearts to apply and obey it.

Sadly, this leads to self-deception and vain religious practices. The prophet Micah faced a similar challenge with the people of Israel in his day and asked them to repent of their sinful religious practices and give their hearts to God by following His requirements.

Metaphors are a powerful way to communicate an important point. A metaphor is a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to something or someone which is not literally the case. Scripture is filled with metaphors. For example, in John’s gospel, Jesus uses seven “I am” metaphors to describe himself. The first one is: “I am the bread of life.” Without even knowing the rest of what Jesus said about being the bread of life, we get a very vivid picture in our minds. But exactly what does Jesus mean by claiming to be the bread of life? Today’s sermon seeks to answer this important question.
