God has established certain laws that govern life on the earth. One of those laws is the law of sowing and reaping. The law of sowing and reaping is primarily agricultural, and in a nutshell it means that what we reap is determined by what we sow. As he concludes his letter to the Galatians, the apostle Paul takes this agricultural law and applies it spiritually. The apostle Paul points to realities about spiritual sowing and reaping that we would be well to remember, so let’s posture our hearts to hear what the Lord has to say to us about spiritual sowing and reaping.

One of the realities of the Christian life is that Christians sin. Sometimes our sin is private; other times it is public. And oftentimes when our sin is public, the nature of the sin and our response to the sin might require the involvement of others. And when others become involved, how should they seek to help us? What should they do? What should their attitude be? As he concludes his letter to the Galatian churches, the apostle Paul instructs believers concerning this inescapably reality of Christians falling into sin. Let’s posture ourselves to hear God’s word on this important matter.

In Paul’s letter to the Galatians, he laboured to help the Galatian believers to see that Christ has set them free from seeking to be justified by the law. This was an important message for the Galatians, and it is an important message for all believers in Christ. But what is the purpose for our freedom? Some people believe that Christian freedom means that we can do what ever we want and live however we wish. But is this the purpose of our freedom in Christ? The apostle Paul makes it abundantly clear that the purpose for our freedom is not to indulge our flesh. Instead it is to love and serve each other.

This morning we continue our sermon series in Galatians, and we will be considering the apostle Paul’s concluding appeal to the Galatians regarding their freedom in Christ. Paul tells the Galatians how to maintain their freedom in Christ, and he warns them about the result of continuing to try to be justified by the law. Then Paul encourages them by telling them that he is confident in the Lord that they will heed his appeal. In a world where people still seek to add to the work of Christ for their salvation, Paul’s words to the Galatians are relevant to us, so let’s hear and heed his words.

Today, as we continue our sermon series in the letter of Galatians, we come to a very tender and revealing portion of the letter: Galatians 4:12-20. Prior to this section, the Apostle Paul was firmly correcting the doctrinal error of the Galatians. But in this portion of the letter, we get a window into his relationship with the Galatians. While Paul is certainly concerned about the Galatians, he is not angry with them. As Paul entreats the Galatians and recounts their history together, there are important lessons about pastors and their people. Let’s open our hearts to hear them.

Preacher: Cedric Moss

Date: 13th August 2017

Passage: Galatians 4:1-11

-------------------

12th Message in the Series: Galatians - The Gospel of Grace

As the Apostle Paul seeks to convince the Galatians about their error in trying to be justified through works of the law, he uses several illustrations. First, he uses the illustration of a last will and testament. Then he uses the illustrations of being imprisoned and under a guardian. In the section of the letter that we’ve come to today, Paul continues his guardian illustration to further his point. He says a child who is under a guardian, though he is the owner of everything, is no different from a slave. In today’s sermon we will consider the implications of Paul’s point for those who profess to know Christ but are still seeking to be justified by what they do or don’t do.

In Galatians 3:15-22, the apostle Paul argues that the giving of the law to Moses did not replace God’s promise of salvation through Abraham. In addition, he reminded the Galatians that the law was secondary to the promise and was given until Christ came. In the section of the letter that we have come to today, the apostle further argues that the law had a temporary role in the lives of those who have come to Christ. In making his case, Paul contrasts life under the law with life in Christ, and he reminds the Galatians and all believers of their past life under the law and their current life in Christ. Let’s open our hearts to hear afresh the wonderful truth of the result of the new life in Christ.

Today, we are continuing our sermon series in Galatians. The apostle Paul has been making a sustained argument that justification comes through faith in Jesus and not through keeping the law. Yet, the reality is that for thousands of years Jews and Gentiles who converted to Judaism were keeping the law. In addressing the Galatians, Paul anticipated a natural question they would ask: If the law can't justify or make people righteous, what is the purpose of the law? In the passage that we've come to today, the apostle Paul answers this important question. Since the question is still relevant today, let's posture our hearts to hear God's word concerning the purpose of the law.

Today we are continuing our sermon series in the book of Galatians. In the previous message, we considered Paul’s challenge to the Galatians in which he reminded them that both the Old Testament and their own conversion experience prove that God saves people by faith and not by works of the law. In the section of Galatians that we have come to today, Paul continues his argument that God saves people by faith, and explains why nobody can be saved by keeping the law. Let’s open our hearts to hear afresh this important truth that God saves people by faith and not through works of the law.

This morning we are continuing our sermon series in Paul’s letter to the Galatians. At the outset of the letter, Paul challenged the Galatians concerning their desertion of the gospel and of Christ. He then went on to share his personal testimony of salvation and preaching the gospel, his important conference in Jerusalem, his confrontation of Peter, and the truth of salvation by faith in Christ. In the text we are considering today, the Apostle Paul turns his attention back to the Galatians and questions them strongly about how they came to Christ and shares how God planned to save the gentiles through Abraham.

A few weeks ago, we considered what it means to be justified through faith in Jesus Christ. In today’s sermon, we will again consider this important subject of justification. Justification is the process by which sinners are made right with God. But exactly how does one get right with God? While many people place the focus of getting right with God on human effort, the truth is that no human effort will ever get us right with God. In today’s sermon, we will once again consider this truth about our inability to do anything to be made right with God.

People often talk about the need to get right with God before we die, and this is a common theme at some funerals. However, exactly what does it mean to get right with God? And how does one get right with God? The answers to these questions are quite surprising because, while many people place the focus of getting right with God on human effort, the truth is that no human effort will ever get us right with God. As we continue our sermon series in Galatians, we come face to face with this truth about our inability to do anything to be made right with God.

This morning we are continuing our sermon series in the letter of Galatians. Last week we considered Paul’s account of his meeting with the apostles and other influential leaders in the church at Jerusalem. Paul laid his gospel before them, and Peter, James, and John commended him and his gospel ministry. Therefore, the passage that we’ve come to this morning is somewhat troubling: Peter hypocritically acts in opposition to the gospel, and Paul confronts him. However, before we quickly condemn Peter, let’s open our hearts and allow the Lord to help us to see how we can likewise so easily undermine the gospel.

People often lament about the conflicting views among Christians. However, some conflicts over what the bible teaches are unavoidable and even necessary. In his letter to the Romans, the apostle Paul urged the Romans to stop quarrelling over their different convictions about things like eating meat, drinking wine, and observing special days. However, in the section of his letter to the Galatians that we have come to today in our sermon series (Galatians 2:1-10), the apostle Paul recounts a particular conflict about what the bible teaches that he was engaged in. In today’s sermon, we will consider why this conflict was necessary for the apostle Paul.

To each his own. No doubt you’ve heard this philosophy of life repeated concerning many things. And while it is perfectly fine to allow for preference concerning many things in life, the gospel is not one of those things. We don’t get to pick and choose the gospel we want to believe, at least not legitimately. The reason is that there is only one gospel, and it is not man’s gospel. This is the point that the apostle Paul makes in the section of his letter to the Galatians that we’ve come to this morning in our sermon series: Galatians 1:11-17. Today, may we all be reminded that the gospel is not man’s gospel.

Why do people who have received the gospel sometimes fall prey to false teachers? Why do they abandon sound doctrine to embrace unsound doctrine? No doubt there are many reasons, but some reasons are consistent in most cases. The Churches of Galatia had received the true Gospel through the preaching ministry of the apostle Paul, but they soon abandoned it. As we continue our sermon series in the letter of Galatians, we come to the opening section of the letter where Paul confronts the Galatians for their abandonment of the gospel. There are protective lessons we can learn, so let’s open our hearts and receive God’s word.

October 31, 2017 marks the 500th year anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. While there were many aspects to the Protestant Reformation, the key aspect was the rediscovery of the true gospel. While there are many places we can find the gospel articulated and explained in Scripture, Paul’s letter to the Galatian Churches is perhaps the most pointed presentation of the message of the gospel. Today, we begin a new sermon series in the letter of Galatians. Despite the rich history and gains of the Protestant Reformation, many still do not understand the gospel. For this reason, this sermon series in Galatians is both timely and necessary.
