Today we come to the final sermon in our extended series in the book of Ecclesiastes. The author of the book, who identifies himself as the Preacher, provided us with a multifaceted view of life in our fallen world. In last week’s message, we saw how the Preacher concluded his message with the same words with which he began: “Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, all is vanity.” The book of Ecclesiastes could have ended after those often repeated words, but it does not. Instead, the book ends by providing us with a pointed reminder of our duty before God. Let’s open our hearts and hear afresh this reminder.

We have come to the second to the last sermon in our sermon series in the book of Ecclesiastes. As the writer of Ecclesiastes concludes the book, he gives sobering advice. First, he calls his readers to pursue and enjoy life to the fullest, but he reminds them that God will bring them into judgement. Then he goes on to command his readers to remember their Creator in the days of their youth. Exactly what does it mean to remember our Creator in the days of our youth? And why does the author issue this command? Today’s sermon seeks to answer these questions. Let’s open our hearts and listen.

How much have you thought about life? If you are like many people, you probably have not thought much about life. But if we are going to live life well, we need to think about life. What is its purpose? What is an enjoyable life? What are some of the common experiences of life that everyone faces? Clearly, the author of Ecclesiastes thought longand hard about life, and in today’s sermon, we consider his words as he concludes the book of Ecclesiastes. Let’s open our hearts and hear his words that are as applicable today as they were in the day that he first wrote them.

Life is filled with risks. One risk that we in The Bahamas face is hurricanes – a very real risk from June 1 to November 30 of every year. Recently, Hurricane Matthew came and hit every island of The Bahamas, something that has not happened since 1929. Some people who suffered loss had insured against the risk, but others, for various reasons, did not. How do we live life and handle risks like hurricanes, the possibility of job loss, business failure, and even untimely death? The answer is we need to live by faith, and the text for today’s sermon tells us how.

Life is filled with disappointments. Anyone who does not agree is perhaps not honest or just has not lived long enough. However, many disappointments are compounded because of unreasonable and unfounded expectations. In the text for this morning’s sermon, we come face to face with two aspects of life that are sources of disappointments for many people who don’t understand them or who forget them. Let’s open our hearts to consider what God’s word has to say to us to prepare us for these outcomes in life when they come our way.

While there is much that we understand about life, there is also much that remains beyond our understanding. How are we to live in this world and accept that there are things we see but don’t understand how they are and why they are the way they are? This is where the book of Ecclesiastes is helpful. In today’s sermon, we will consider the words of the Preacher as he addresses realities of life that are beyond our understanding. Let’s open our hearts to the counsel of God’s word to help us to live with realities that are beyond human understanding.

Today, we continue our sermon series in the book of Ecclesiastes. Last week, in verses 15-29 of chapter 7, we were once again brought face to face with the fact that our world is broken and crooked, evidenced by the fact that at times righteous people die early while wicked people live long. It is so easy to despair about life. However, we can still live well in our broken world. In the text that we have come to today, Ecclesiastes 8, the Preacher helps us to see that even though our world is broken and wisdom has limitations, applying wisdom enables us to live well. This morning’s message is intended to show us how.

Today, as we continue our sermon series in the book of Ecclesiastes, we come to a passage that reminds us that this world is broken and crooked. For example, the Preacher begins by drawing our attention to the fact that at times righteous people die early while wicked people live long. And he concludes by telling us that although God made us upright, we have sought out many schemes. As we listen to God’s word this morning, let’s trust the Holy Spirit to open our eyes to better understand our world as we better understand God’s word.

Today, as we continue our sermon series in the book of Ecclesiastes, we come to a somewhat intriguing section of the book. The author of Ecclesiastes, who identifies himself as the Preacher, shares some challenging reflections about life and death. For example, he says, “It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go the house of feasting.” He also says, “Sorrow is better than laughter.” However, the truth is that we
would all rather attend a party than go to a funeral, and we all prefer laughter over sorrow. How then can the Preacher say that these things that we do not naturally prefer are better? Today’s message will consider this question.

Like many people, you’re probably convinced that if you had a large amount of money (like a million dollars) your life would be wonderfully better. In some cases, their lives are (or were) awfully worse. Why?

Do you fear God? If you are like most people, you will probably answer yes. But do you really fear God? The truth is that many people do not fear God, even though they say they fear him. And one of the reasons many people don’t truly fear God is they don’t truly know God. As we continue our sermon series in the book of Ecclesiastes, we come face to face with the sober reminder to fear God. Let’s posture our hearts to hear and heed God’s Word this morning.

When sin entered into the world, it affected everything, including human relationships. It is very instructive that the first murder in the bible occurs between two brothers. Sadly, this kind of disharmony in relationships
continues to mark the human experience. Today, we pick up our sermon series in Ecclesiastes, and in the section we have come to, (Chapter 4, verses 9-16), the Preacher talks about the benefit of companionship.
Because relationships at time can be difficult to maintain, we can easily devalue the importance of human companionship. Let’s allow God’s word to speak to us afresh on this subject.

Why do you work? For most of us, the answer to that question is in Psalm 1. We work to work to provide for the needs of ourselves and our families. However, in Ecclesiastes 4, the Preacher points to some other reasons that we work, and some are surprising, like envy and greed. Could this also be the case for many of us, even though our natural response is that we work to meet the needs of ourselves and our families? Today’s sermon is an opportunity for us to learn more about ourselves and others in terms of the reasons we work, so let’s posture our hearts to hear God’s word.

This morning, we are resuming our sermon series in the book of Ecclesiastes. As mentioned in the previous sermon in this series, Ecclesiastes chapter 3 marks a transition in the book. The Preacher in chapters 1 and 2 questions and explores the meaning of life. Chapters 3 through 12 read more like the observations he made about life as he sought to understand the meaning of life. In the passage we are considering this morning, the Preacher shares observations about contradictions in life and the reality of death and how man is like the beast of the field because both die and return to the dust. Let’s posture our hearts to hear God’s wisdom from God’s word.

This morning, as we resume our sermon series in the book of Ecclesiastes, we’ve come to a section in which we find the most well-known part of the entire book. That most well-known section is Ecclesiastes 3:1-10, which begins with these words: “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under the heaven.” These verses are regularly read at funerals, and the point is that there is a time to die. However, God’s message to us in Ecclesiastes 3:1-15 is relevant not only for death, but for life as well. It teaches us important lessons about time and eternity and God and ourselves. Let’s posture our hearts to hear these lessons afresh.

In the text that we will be considering today, the Preacher in Ecclesiastes continues with his observations of life under the sun. Specifically, in this morning’s text, the Preacher looks at work, and he addresses an inescapable reality about work that causes many to despair and worry even before it happens. In addition, despite the difficulties of work in a fallen world, the Preacher helps us to see that our work can also be a joy. Let’s posture our hearts to hear and consider why work is sometimes difficult and how it can be made joyful.

Today, we consider a sober reality that the Preacher in Ecclesiastes observed. He discovered that death comes to both wise and foolish people. As a result, the Preacher despaired about life. Today, we will consider the words of the Preacher and seek to make application in our own lives.

Last week we considered the limits of wisdom in its ability to understand life and satisfy people. Today, we consider the limits of pleasure. Many people have pleasure as their ultimate goal, so they seek pleasure in every aspect of life. But is this life all about seeking pleasure and being happy? Today, we will consider the many ways in which the Preacher in Ecclesiastes sought pleasure, as well as his conclusion after attaining everything he thought would bring him pleasure. Let’s posture our hearts to hear and heed God’s word.

In the previous message in this series, we considered the limits of secularism (living life without any reference to God) in making sense of life. Many people argue that secularism cannot make sense of life because secular people don’t think enough about life; for them it is what it is. But what about wisdom? If we use wisdom to think deeply and thoughtfully about life in this world, can’t we better understand it and enjoy it?This sermon seeks to answer that question.

What is the purpose of this life? Why do we do the things we do, like work and acquire possessions? For many people, it is because everyone else has done these things and they continue to do these things. But few people really give much thought to this life that we all live. This morning, as we resume our sermon series in the book of Ecclesiastes, we come face to face with questions from a wise man who has pondered this life deeply. Let’s posture our hearts to hear and consider his words of wisdom that are designed to help us to live well in God’s world.

This morning, we are starting a new sermon series in an obscure Old Testament book, the book of Ecclesiastes. Ecclesiastes is considered one of the most neglected books of the bible, but it is also one of the wisdom books. So, to neglect Ecclesiastes is to neglect part of God’s wisdom for His people. Today, as this sermon series in Ecclesiastes is introduced, you will no doubt get an appreciation for why it is neglected. But more than that, let’s pray that we will all gain an appreciation for why we need the wisdom it contains.
