[0:00] I read the words, hopefully they'll be on the screen. I'll read the light-colored words and you read the dark ones, that would be really good. [0:13] Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth. You've set your glory in the heavens. Through the praise of children and infants, you have established a stronghold against your enemies to silence the foe of the event. [0:35] When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you're mindful of him? [0:48] You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. You made them rulers over the works of your hands. [1:03] You put everything under their feet, all flocks and herds and the animals of the wild, the birds of the sky and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. [1:16] Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name. And we're going to worship God. How great is our God. [1:26] Sing with me. How great is our God. And all will see how great, how great is our God. The splendor of the King. The splendor of the King. [1:58] He's a great, how great is our God. Let all the earth rejoice. He wraps himself in light. [2:13] And darkness tries to hide. And he trembles at his voice. And trembles at his voice. [2:24] How great is our God. Sing with me. How great is our God. And all will see how great, how great is our God. [2:41] And the전- Go ahead, three in one. [3:06] Father, Spirit, Son, the Lion and the Lamb, the Lion and the Lamb. How great is our God. [3:21] Sing with me, how great is our God. And I will see how great, how great is our God. [3:36] Name above all names. Name above all names. You are worthy of all praise. [3:48] My heart will sing how great is our God. Name above all names. [4:04] You are worthy of all praise. My heart will sing how great is our God. [4:16] How great is our God. Sing with me, how great is our God. [4:29] And go and see how great, how great is our God. Heavenly Father, we acknowledge this morning that you are great. [4:46] Your name is above all other names. You're worthy of all the praise that we give. Forgive us when we take the praise from you sometimes. Father God, we want to give you all the praise. [4:57] From age to age you stand. And time is in your hands. The beginning and the end, it's in your hands. And no one else is. The Godhead, three in one. [5:08] Father, we thank you that we can call you our Heavenly Father. Son, we thank you that we can call you our Saviour. Holy Spirit, thank you that we can call you our Comforter and our Strength. [5:20] We thank you. Father God, three in one. We worship you. We give you all the thanks and praise and glory that's due to your name. And we want to sing now a song, The Goodness of God. [5:33] I love you, Lord, for your mercy never fails me. All my days I've been held in your hands. From the moment I wake up until I lay my head. [5:44] Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God. I love you, Lord. [6:05] All my life. [6:35] And all my life you have been faithful. All my life you have been so, so good. [6:50] With every breath that I am able, I will sing of the goodness of God. [7:00] I love your voice. I love your voice. You have led me through the fire. [7:14] In darkest night, you are close like no other. I've known you as a father. I've known you as a friend. [7:27] And all my life you have been so, so good. All my life you have been so, so good. All my life you have been so, so good. [7:48] With every breath that I am able, I will sing of the goodness of God. [7:59] Your goodness. Your goodness. Your goodness is running after. It's running after me. Your goodness is running after. [8:12] It's running after me. With my life laid down, I surrender now. I'll give you everything. Your goodness is running after. [8:25] It's running after me. Your goodness is running. Your goodness is running after. Your goodness is running after. [8:38] It's running after me. With my life laid down, I surrender now. I give you everything. Your goodness is running after. [8:51] It's running after me. All my life. And all my life you have been faithful. [9:07] All my life you have been so, so good. With every breath that I am able, I will sing of the goodness. [9:23] All my life. And all my life you have been faithful. All my life you have been so, so good. [9:39] With every breath that I am able, I will sing of the goodness. [9:50] God, I will sing of the goodness of God. I will sing of the goodness of God. [10:08] All my life you have been faithful. All my life you have been so, so good. With every breath that I am able, I am going to sing of the goodness of God. Thank you so much. [10:19] Bless you, God. Thank you. Please be seated. Thank you. I am going to invite Mary to come up and share something about what the hospitality team have been doing. [10:38] So, Mary, you have been thrown in at the deep end. Sarah has passed it all off and she has gone to Canada. Not yet. Not yet. Oh, well. She has passed it on to Deputy. [10:50] So, who are the hospitality team at the moment? Right. At the moment, Sarah obviously heads it up. She is the deacon for hospitality and she chairs the team, which is Kate Rogers, who heads up tea and coffee after church. [11:07] Pearlie, who does the job club soup runner. Andreas Majes, who organises the ice lollies in the summer. And me. [11:18] I'm not quite sure what I do. Anthony Croft is the elder for hospitality. And what is Christian hospitality? That was something that we discussed quite carefully at our very first meeting, which was formed last April, April 23. [11:38] And we looked at Acts 2, verses 42 to 47, when it talks about what the early church did. And at the first church, they demonstrated hospitality, care and fellowship. [11:52] It's not just about food, but it's sharing our time, care, warmth, welcomes, friendship, and increasing each member of our fellowship's sense of belonging. [12:06] And this is what we want to do here at Church Union. Obviously, sharing meals is a good way to do this, but we're not just a catering team. Care is given through providing flowers, cards, visiting, and praying for folk. [12:25] Includes overlapping pastoral care. The hospitality team are here to serve the church through supporting and enabling many of the other ministry teams to achieve their goals and objectives. [12:42] Thank you. So, please can you give us some examples of what the hospitality team have been helping with in the past year? Okay. [12:52] So, obviously, after church refreshments have increased a little. And on Sundays, we provide tea and cakes after special services like the Advent service, midweek services, Christmas and Easter celebrations. [13:10] We started to try and offer meal support to families who've just had babies. Having had a son who had twins, I learned that that was quite helpful. People coming out of hospital or have been unwell at home and need support at that time. [13:28] All those, also people who've recently been bereaved. And we've begun to offer a service to families of our dear members who have left us. [13:40] And by offering afternoon tea or lunch at their Thanksgiving for Life services. [13:54] Completely different, we've also run the church ice lolly service after summer services and supported picnics on the rye. And there's a bit more on this side. [14:10] We are deeply involved in supporting the Job Club by organising the soup rota and have recently supported the Fit for Life venture, providing tea and cake after their exercises and giving them more chat time. [14:24] We've catered for the whole church fellowship lunches and supported the weekend at home catering. Going forward, we're really keen to increase our personal support of folk needing meals. [14:39] And any difficult life events and supporting other ministries with their strategic plans. So, for example, coming up, we are planning to provide pre-service teas for our international ministries when they visit in July and October and hope to become really involved in supporting outreach community children and young people's teams with their plans for the use of our new welcome space with the Living Stones project. [15:09] So, how can the church support you in this work? Well, we desperately need people to show a willingness to be part of our list of possible helpers. [15:21] So, we can build up a group of people to support us who we can message when we have fellowship or special event needs. [15:32] And if they can help with a meal, a cake, whether you make it or buy it, and come and make sandwiches or serve or clear up afterwards, that list would be really brilliant. [15:48] At the moment, Sarah is doing this much. We need people who are happy to help him in any little ways so that we can together make a huge impact on the life of our church. [16:03] The more people that help a little, the less there'll be a lot to do. It's a great way to get to know other church folk because you have to talk when you're serving them and you spend time and have fun together. [16:18] It's a brilliant opportunity as a new attender in the church to dip your toe in the serving water. And of course, we need your prayers, that people will be open to ask for help. [16:32] I think sometimes that's really hard to do. But if you just let somebody know and contact either Sarah or myself or any other member of the team, we can support you in whatever way is appropriate. [16:45] Yeah. Pray that we will, as a church, become known for sharing Christ's love in action. [16:59] So please, if you can get in touch, if you feel that you can help in that way, that would be great. Let me pray for the team then. Father God, we want to thank you for those who have a heart for this ministry. [17:12] And we pray, Father, for those who may be considering how they might serve you, that they might consider whether this is an area that they could help with. We pray for Sarah and Mary and each of the members of the team, Lord. [17:24] We thank you for their love and their care. We pray that we might be looking out for those who perhaps have a need also and to pass them on maybe a form of outreach where we can really help with some hospitality there. [17:38] So would you bless their team and their ministry? Be with Anthony, Lord, as he also oversees that. Commit it all to you, Lord, in Jesus' name. Amen. Amen. Thank you, Mary. [17:49] Bless you. No, I'll have those. Well, we've come to the time where actually, Salt and Light are not meeting now. [18:03] So Salt and Light are staying with us. Good. We've got some Salt and Light in here. The other groups are going to be leaving. If anybody from Salt and Light would rather help with the younger people, then free to go and do that. [18:17] Is that right? Great. And while we do that, let's pray for you as you go. Father God, we thank you for our young people. We thank you for the new lives that you've given to us to share our lives with. [18:29] We thank you that they can share their lives with us. We ask, Lord, for them to grow, that they might grow to be strong leaders for you in the future, Lord. We pray that each of them will know Jesus as their personal saviour. [18:43] Pray for those who are teaching and leading. Commit them to you in Jesus' name again. Amen. So while we go, we're going to sing the next song, which is before the throne of God above. [18:55] I have a strong and perfect plea, a great high priest whose name is love, whoever lives and pleads for me. Isn't it great to know that Jesus is pleading for us with the Father? [19:11] The Holy Spirit is bringing prayers to the Father for us. Before the throne of God above, I have a strong and perfect plea. [19:46] A great high priest whose name is love, whoever lives and pleads for me. [19:57] My name is graven on his hands. My name is written on his hand. [20:07] I know that while in heaven he stands. No tongue can bid me then depart. No tongue can bid me then depart. [20:21] When Satan tells me to despair. [20:34] When Satan tells me of the guilt within him. Upward I look and see him there Who made an end to all my sin Because the sinless Savior died My sinful soul is counted free For God the just is satisfied To look on him and harden me To look on him and harden me Behold him there, the risen Lamb My perfect spotless righteousness The great unchangeable I am [21:37] The King of glory and of grace One with himself I cannot die My soul is purchased with his blood My life is hid with Christ on high With Christ my Savior and my God With Christ my Savior and my God One with himself I cannot die My soul is purchased with his blood My life is hid with Christ on high With Christ my Savior and my God With Christ my Savior and my God I plead for anybody today Who doesn't know who doesn't know Who doesn't know Christ as their own Savior [22:38] Who can't say I plead for him there My perfect spotless righteousness The great unchangeable The great unchangeable One with himself I cannot die I cannot say Can you say that Without Christ you cannot say My soul is purchased by his blood He's done it all I can do nothing to add to it My life is hid in Christ on high With Christ my Savior and my God I hope you can say that today If not, you want to speak To somebody about it I'd love to share with you What Christ has done for you Thank you Please be seated and now Stephen is going to bring our prayers of intercession. [23:32] Let's pray. Father, we thank you for the opportunity to come to you in corporate intercessory prayer to present to you some of the things which are on our minds at the moment and to seek your guidance and intervention. [23:53] This morning we earnestly pray for healing for our dear friend and fellow worker who has been in hospital for the past week. This has come as a shock to us and we find it difficult to process and our prayer is that you will restore her to us. [24:15] We pray for her husband, her children and her extended family as they come to terms with what is happening and we pray that you will give them your peace, a strong feeling of your presence and the knowledge that the situation is in your hands. [24:36] in a short time of silence you might like to voice your own prayer for this in your hearts, not out loud, please. [24:46] We thank you, Lord, for the skilled medical staff and the medical facilities and equipment you have blessed us with and pray that they are able to be used to their fullest. [25:19] We pray for protection for our leadership team as a number have dealt with health issues for themselves or family members close to them. May they continue to know your leading and increase their faith to be able to resist the fiery darts. [25:37] We continue to pray for our living stones building project going on in the chapel part of our buildings. We thank you for all that has been achieved so far and it has been encouraging to see progress in so many areas. [25:59] We ask that our planning application for replacement windows will be received favourably and that we will be able to progress that part of the project. We look forward to all that you will achieve through us when we are once again able to use that area. [26:20] Please give us confidence and enthusiasm as we enter our week of extraordinary prayer from next Sunday. May the time be a real blessing to us as we maybe dedicate more time and effort into prayer and maybe try new ways of expression and rearrange our normal routines. [26:43] We pray for the Love Wycombe celebration on the Rye in a fortnight's time that it will be an occasion where the churches of Wycombe can present a united front and demonstrate your love to our local community and the joy it can bring to our and their hearts. [27:05] As we enter a period of campaigning leading up to the general election on July the 4th, we pray for a spirit of discernment as we listen to and think about what the individual candidates have to say. [27:20] Open our hearts and minds to your will and leading and we pray for candidates with integrity and a servant heart. [27:33] We thank you that the recent elections in Chad where we have several missionary friends have passed peacefully and we pray that will continue. We pray that long-awaited and talked-about ceasefires will come in the wars in Ukraine and in Gaza. [27:54] We pray that any ceasefire will give time to reflect and work towards a more lasting peace settlement and not just to allow time for regrouping and rearming. [28:09] We know that there are many other conflicts throughout the world as people strive for power and influence over others for their own gain. We ask that you intervene where circumstances are against your will. [28:27] We pray for those suffering as a result of natural disasters such as those affected by the landslides in Papua New Guinea or from flooding, drought, earthquakes and the like. [28:40] As we see your answers to our prayers may it, as our reading will say turn our despair into joy that we may sing out your praises. [28:55] We thank you that we can come to you in the name of Jesus with confidence confident that you have heard our prayers and confident that nothing is impossible for you to do. [29:08] Amen. Good morning. [29:24] The Bible reading this morning is Psalm 30. If you have a church Bible it's on page 558 otherwise it will be on the screen. [29:35] Psalm 30. It was a psalm or a song for the dedication of the temple. I will exalt you Lord for you lifted me out of the depths and did not let my enemies gloat over me. [29:54] Lord my God I called to you for help and you healed me. You Lord brought me up from the realm of the dead. You spared me from going down to the pit. [30:05] Sing praises to the Lord you his faithful people praise his holy name for his anger lasts only a moment but his favour lasts a lifetime. [30:19] Weeping may stay for the night but rejoicing comes in the morning. When I felt secure I said I shall never be shaken. Lord when you favoured me you made my royal mountain stand firm but when you hid your face I was dismayed. [30:38] To you Lord I called in the Lord I cried for mercy. What is gained if I'm silenced if I go down to the pit will the dust praise you will it proclaim your faithfulness? [30:49] Hear Lord and be merciful to me Lord be my help. You turned my wailing into dancing. You removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent. [31:06] Lord my God I will praise you forever. Amen. O'Brien. Thank you Roger. [31:20] O'Brien let me pray for you before you share. Father God we thank you for your word we thank you for your love shown through those who have written these psalms down and we ask Lord that as O'Brien opens it to us we pray that you bless him fill him with your spirit speak through him to us we ask it for your glory Lord in Jesus name Amen. [31:48] Thank you. Alright thank you everyone. How are you all doing? Good. [31:59] Good to see all of you and again I'm happy to be given the opportunity just to share the word of the Lord with you and I just want to breathe a short word of prayer again before I begin so let's pray. [32:15] Lord we thank you again and we thank you that you are God that you heal and we trust you God Almighty that you can do all that we could ever ask or think. [32:30] We pray for those who are not well comfort the families comfort the friends comfort the church members and uplift us now we pray in our spirits in Jesus name Amen. [32:45] Amen. So Psalm 30 and again it's number 558 in your church Bibles and I titled this message today give thanks unto the Lord give thanks unto the Lord Now friends this Psalm I think reminds us of the importance of giving thanks it was a beautiful Psalm written by King David at the dedication of his palace I know when Roger read a while ago he said at the dedication of the temple there are some theologians who actually believe that but I I lean on the other side where I think it was at the dedication of David's house his palace I know Charles Spurgeon thinks it was his temple as well as I read through this chapter friends my grandfather who passed away a few years ago came back to mind and I [33:46] I just want to share a short memory of him before we delve into scripture so when he was in his late thirties early forties he got hit by a van while walking along the road and for the rest of his life he walked like this leaning to one side the van driver never stopped he kept going and he didn't know who hit him he was also a lumberjack so he cut trees made lumber for house building furniture building in his earlier years and one day while he was cutting lumber his hand got trapped in the saw a big saw and again for the rest of his life his hand was like this he couldn't open it further on he had some issues with his left eye so he had severe pain in his eye he went to the hospital and the doctor gave him an injection he said and he lost that eye so again for the rest of his life he was living with one eye he and I were also we were clearing some land for farming we were using machetes to clear the land and he and I were about maybe 20-30 meters apart and as I was clearing the land [35:24] I heard a tear like a shirt being ripped or cloth and I looked over and there was blood everywhere he accidentally chopped his own hand with the machete and he ripped his shirt tied it up and that was it I said we lived close to a clinic so I said I called him daddy because he raised me I said daddy let's go down to the clinic to get it treated and he said no that's alright that was it finally he was one day mowing the lawn and he slipped pulling the lawn mower up to his right foot chopping off the big toe and again he ripped a piece of cloth tied it up I said let's go to the clinic no it's fine and he was always like that so he got hit by a van his hand got trapped into a saw he lost one eye he chopped his hand he chopped off his toe and every time I heard him talk about one of these incidents he'd always say well give thanks [36:41] I'm still alive that was always his response give thanks I'm still alive on any random day you could pass him sitting on the porch just singing hymns I know one of his favorite hymn was victory in Jesus my savior forever he sought me and he bought me with his redeeming blood and it was such a precious hymn and I fell in love with that hymn because of him and now it's my favorite hymn but with all that happened to him friends he would always say well give thanks I'm still alive so we know what's happening in our own lives in the lives of others but I want to encourage you friends give thanks I share another story quickly in 2nd Chronicles chapter 20 there was a king his name was Jehoshaphat a righteous king and he was told by one of his servants that there were three armies coming against him and immediately [37:48] Jehoshaphat gathered the people and he prayed and he thanked God for the victory before they even went to war can we thank God today friends before he heals can we thank God today friends before we see his intervention it is my heart's desire and prayer that we do so David here in Psalm 30 is giving thanks to God primarily for his success in verse 1 he says I will exalt you Lord for you lifted me out of the depths and did not let my enemies gloat over me at this dedication friends of David's palace he isn't glorying in himself he isn't beating his chest saying look what I did look at my accomplishment rather he is exalting the Lord knowing that it is only by his will that he has success he understood the importance of giving [39:01] God credit for the success that he had praising God not himself I know sometimes when we accomplish things when we gain a degree or buy a new house or a new car or any accomplishment we tend to run to someone else first and say hey you know this happened but I want to encourage us to grow into the habit of thanking God first because he is the one who allowed it verse 2 he says Lord my God I call to you for help and you healed me isn't it wonderful friends to know that we have a God who was not made by hands he is a real true living God who hears us who understands us one songwriter puts it this way he understands every little bit of heartache and pain and every time [40:07] I call him he hears and every time I cry he knows the reason why why does he love me so he hears he understands Hebrews 4 15 to 16 says for we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities but was in all points tempted like we are yet without sin and then he goes on to say let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in the time of need! [40:48] God wants us to come to him boldly and David says here Lord my God I called to you for help and you healed me God heard him have you ever felt like God is not listening like your priors are being falling on deaf ears can I tell you friends that he is hearing you one friend said to me once God only give three answers and I believe I shared this with you some time ago he either says yes no or wait but he always answers yes no or wait but he always answers and that's what David friends is claiming here in this prior that he has found grace and mercy with God you see friends we don't need to be eloquent in prayer we don't need to enunciate and pronounce our words perfectly to appease the ears of men don't focus on that especially when you're called upon to pray in public this is not as important as communing with [42:04] God as friend with friend I can imagine friends the smile on David's face as he was singing or saying this prayer at the ceremony signifying happiness at the truth of what he was singing God heard him and God healed him I still believe that we serve a God who heals! [42:33] God knows us verse 3 says you Lord brought me up from the realm of the dead you speared me from going down to the pit the idea of God lifting David from the depths is much akin to pulling water from a well David is saying God lifted me up from the pit God spared his life here David painted a perfect image of what it is like to be rescued by a God who loves us by a God whom we are secure in he had a lot of enemies David and he could have easily died at any point in his life he could have easily died by his enemies hands but [43:40] God preserved him you see friends it does not matter where you are in life what you have done God understands and I want you to understand that we serve a God who can do exceedingly abundantly above all that we could ever ask or think do you understand that he can do exceedingly abundantly above all that we could ever imagine that we could ever conceive trust him and may your friend with the will of the Lord come back to us with a mighty testimony praise the Lord God rescued David and he can rescue you not just in this temporal earthly life from temporal earthly problems but he can also rescue us from eternal death and destruction let's go down to verse 4 and 5 sing the praises of the [44:57] Lord you his faithful people praise his holy name for his anger last only a moment but his favor last a lifetime weeping may stay for the night but rejoicing comes in the morning I remember one person said to me years ago whenever you pray write it down so that when God answers you remember that he did sometimes we tend to forget that God answered our prayers but I want to say that to you as well you pray write it down so when God answers you remember that he did David felt that he could not praise God enough as Charles Spurgeon said he enlisted the hearts of others to join him so he says sing praises to the [46:03] Lord you his faithful people praise his holy name not just in the good but also in the bad in verse five he alludes to the fact that we serve a God who is forgiven and merciful while his anger may be temporary his grace and mercy is eternal there were many times friends that God was angry at David for example when he counted the army in 1 Chronicles 20 instead of trusting God or when he took another man's wife and practically sanctioned his death God was angry at him but friends David knew that God was forgiven and he knew according to Romans 8 that nothing can separate us from the love of God it says neither death nor life nor angels nor principalities nor powers nor things present nor things to come nothing can separate us from [47:12] God's love verse six and seven says when I felt secure I said I will never be shaken Lord when you favored me you made my royal mountain stand firm but when you hid your face I was dismayed here we can see how confident David was in God he felt safe and secure in his savior and he knew nothing could trouble him in that space these verses friends signify the importance of being in God's presence and we should worry if we're not if you are a professed Christian and you feel all right being apart from God then maybe your soul isn't saved and maybe the Holy Spirit doesn't live inside of you if this is the case friends then you need to cry out to [48:15] God like David did cry out to him for mercy and salvation to the Lord I called to the Lord I cried for mercy he said in verse 8 to the Lord I called to the Lord I cried for mercy and then in verse 9 he says what is gained I am silenced if I go down to the pit will the dust praise you will it proclaim your faithfulness in the Old Testament friends I believe it is safe to say that they never understood the concept of the resurrection they never understood what Paul spoke of in Thessalonians chapter 4 where he said the dead in Christ will rise they also never understood what the apostle John spoke of in the book of Revelation where he says we will be praising God in heaven so [49:15] David wanted to praise God in the here and now and I think that's a beautiful thing friends he wanted to be alive to praise the Lord and as his word says let everything that has breath praise the Lord praise the Lord praise the Lord praise the Lord amen and down to verse 10 to 12 it says hear Lord and be merciful to me Lord be my help you turned my wailing into dancing you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy that my heart may sing your praises and not and not be silent Lord my God I will praise you forever this was a time friends where it would seem David remembered all the bad times all his suffering all his mourning and how the Lord turned things around he made him joyful and he caused him to sing praises and he can do that for you he can do that for me he is still a [50:27] God who works miracles he is still a mighty awesome God Jehovah Jireh he is still Jehovah Jireh he is still Jehovah Rapha he is still Jehovah Nisi he still provides he still protects he still takes care of us so David gave thanks friends of of his temple to God but it is important to know friends that God is now building a temple and he wants all of us to be a part of it he wants all of us to experience that joy that David had that peace that passes all understanding and we looked at this verse a few months ago 1st Peter chapter 2 verse 5 it says you also like living stones are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through [51:27] Jesus Christ we now are being built into this temple for God's glory for God's purpose! through I give you thanks for all you have done. [52:49] I am so blessed. My soul is at rest. Oh, Lord, I give you thanks. [52:59] Could you join us in standing? And if you've caught on, just sing it with us. All right. Thanks. I give you thanks for all you have done. [53:18] I am so blessed. My soul is at rest. Oh, Lord, I give you thanks. [53:30] I am so blessed. My soul is at rest. I am so blessed. My soul is at rest.
