Everything is toward the glory and praise of God, but we need to know what that looks like. Paul's prayer of thankfulness for the Philippians is for what God has achieved in their lives. God is constantly at work in our lives and never gives up on us. The fruit of righteousness comes from Christ's nature in us. Simply affirming that everything is to the glory and praise of God is not enough - we need discernment to approve the good and avoid error. Discernment is also to the glory and praise of God. Change happens to those listening - God's word is unchanging.

Salvation creates servants. The introduction to Philippians focuses on Paul as servants, then the overseers and deacons who serve the church's spiritual and practical needs. This letter is how Paul serves the church at Philippi, doing what Jesus asks of him. Overseers and deacons are to be qualified. These qualifications are described in Titus and Timothy. The condition of our walk with God affects others in the church. Salvation leads to servanthood, the fruit of being like Christ

Who is your trust in, yourself or God? Prayer is used as the framework in this parable for us to understand where we place our trust. We can meet God as a justified person or as a debtor. What standard do you live your life by? The pharisee measures how far away he is from others beneath him, but the tax collector measures how far away he is from God's standard. The tax collector recognises that he cannot repay his debt, and that he needs mercy from God.

Sin dulls spiritual senses, making people insensitive to what God is doing. God provides measures to slow the decline of His people, and measures for their restoration. Rather than acknowledge their sin, people go elsewhere for answers. God's measures encourage people to consider that distance from God is detrimental.

The Spirit is given to us so that we don't continue to live the old way in the new life - assurance and removal of doubt. Standards we live by - is what important to God important to us? Worship is a way of life. What defines the Christian life? Am I fulfilling the responsibilities God has given me? God's grace is sufficient that we may live the life He has given us. The distinction is Psalm 1 is between those who are devoted to the word of God, and the counsel of the wicked, not just belief and unbelief. A person can believe that they should devote themselves to the word of God and not do it. True service is in light of God's word. Our motivation for service and worship is God's glory. God is worshipped when His word is obeyed. God is served when His word is obeyed. God's grace is sufficient to live the life He has given us.

We have God's Word Building memory of God's Word fills a storehouse for times of need. The Spirit of God brings to our remembrance things we have been taught. The thief on the cross recognised that his salvation was based on Jesus' remembrance of him, not the other way round.

This section begins and ends with God's word lasting forever, in creation, across generations, and in our lives. God is faithful, and His word creates.

God's word is never to be forgotten. When your memory is full of the right things you can make right decisions. As the Psalmist medidates on God's word he receives its blessings. Understanding God's Word drives good decisions.

God pays attention to you -Where are you going to receive glory and honour from? -Whose attention are you looking for? -What words are you looking to hear?

Psalm 8 beings with David reflecting that the Earth is not enough to display God's glory and character. David then wonders why, considering all of creation, God pays attention to him. People have a privileged position in creation, we are made in the image of God. Glory and honour are to be found in God, not in creation. Looking for blessings we already have in God elsewhere will mean that we will lose those blessings. Live a Godly life, consistent with the position He has given us.

Christians' whole purpose depends on Christ's resurrection. Christ's life, death, and resurrection fulfil God's promises from the Old Testament. In Corinthians, Paul states that Christianity is futile without Christ's resurrection. There is a difference between knowing and believing the scriptures/ Mary and the disciples perceive the empty tomb through their misunderstanding of scripture. Faith is not to fill in the gaps of our knowledge. Faith is in what God has said and done.

Unified disunity has a conundrum - action creates new disunity, but inaction leaves us with the existing disunity There is a difference between knowing what needs to be done and doing it. What would happen if the protective walls disappear?

Peace, unity, and direction comes from others fighting battles for you
People may miss why / how we have peace, unity, and direction

We need to tell the difference between necessary conflict and disunity. Experience, wisdom, and qualificaiton:

Seek each other's maturity in Christ - maturity matters to God
Maturity is needed to teach transgressors how to avoid sin in the futur
Fighting the potential of sin is a fight worth having
Fighting the right battles is necessary for the church to retain its saltiness
Personal holiness before God matters

Love covers (knows how to deal with) sin, but does not cover up sin. There is a distinction between who we are (identity) and what we do (role, gifting). 1) The direct object: love is a verb; what/who do we love? 2) What does it mean to become a mature person, biblically understood? Becoming a person is different to being trained in a role. Biblical education teaches us how to be persons. Issues in relationships are addressed by starting with the people. We cannot have mature ministries, mature fellowship without mature people. Moving forward requires learning the correct lessons.

Christ needs to be the central thought in the believer's mind How we respond to God and each other as church is a demonstration to the world. The church is becoming like Jesus, but is not yet exactly like him. Never forget that Jesus is central. The wisdom of the cross teaches us that Jesus has done that which we could not not do for ourselves. The wisdom of the cross is the standard for all life.

What directs our attention to the things we pray for? "Remember Lot's wife" - God removes sin from us, we should not long for it. Similarly, Lot does not want the angels to stay in the city where he stays. A key point in Abraham's prayer is v25: "will not the judge of all the earth do right?" Abraham knows that God will only do right. 1) Know who God is when you pray 2) Understand the things that God will not do when you pray.

Abraham could not find one righteous person in the city. The one righteous person is Jesus Christ, who makes our prayers heard before God the Father.

What God does will be the right thing. What God has done in Jesus Christ is the only way to escape the coming judgment.

Mark's gospel answers two questions: who can give us access to God, and how will the do it? (Who is Jesus, and why he must die) Jesus clears the temple of money lenders and quotes Jeremiah 7 : "house of prayer for all nations, but you have made it a den of robbers" Both God and people are being robbed when they are denied access to God. Jesus curses the fig tree and it withers, indicating access to God will no longer be via a fruitless temple. Peter knows Jesus is the Christ, but does not yet understand why the Christ has to die. Like the blind man healed in two stages, he sees but not clearly. To be a follower of Christ is to deny yourself and take up your cross.

Genesis is for us, but not directly to us. Genesis explains to God's people leaving Egypt who God is and their relationship to Him. God creates out of nothing, by His word. There is a link between the original creation and the new creation: "Faith comes through hearing, and hearing through the Word of Christ" (Romans 10v17) There is a difference between what man can make, and what only God can create. It takes time for the purposes of God to be worked out in creation. New creation: Christians are born from above. God brings us into relationship to relate to us.

Jesus must do something for us, for us to belong to Him. In order to follow Jesus, a change in your life is necessary.

The washing of Peter's feet: unless Jesus does this for you, you will not be changed and belong to God. At the cross, God cleanses us and brings us into relationship with God.
The cross shaped life can't be imitated, and requires change at the cross. We must decide to be like Jesus every day.

The Galations forgot that salvation is in Jesus alone, and tried to add works. Paul reminds them that Jesus is the right person, in the right place, at the right time, and in the right way. The fullness of time and waiting - people are stuck until Jesus arrives. The right person - understanding the problem faced by people lets us understand that Jesus is the only solution. Before we come to Jesus we need to understand why he is necessary. God takes his time to lay out his standards, promises and meanings.

Paul starts this section with why it is right to be thankful to God, and demonstrates thankfulness is His prayer for the Ephesians. Thankfulness to God is difficult when we collide with His Governance. 1) Thankful for their faith in God and love for each other; their transformation isn't over. 2) This type of change requires prayer; God is the source of the change. 3) There are no competing authorities, Jesus is ruler over all. 4) Ephesians decisively repented and ceased profiting from unrighteousness. 5) Implication vs application.

The church needs prayed for more. Change that brings God praise starts with God.
