The theme of the book of Hebrews is " no turning back". We belong to a kingdom that cannot be shaken; believers have come and and have access to the heavenly realm. As we gather for worship we are not alone. The church is visible and invisible; what is physically seen and what is understood by faith. We are told what worship is like in heaven,as a pattern to follow. it is better to worship poorly in the correct way, than incorrectly with skill. Praise is speaking well of God, worship is sustained obedience.

Christ needs to be the central thought in the believer's mind How we respond to God and each other as church is a demonstration to the world. The church is becoming like Jesus, but is not yet exactly like him. Never forget that Jesus is central. The wisdom of the cross teaches us that Jesus has done that which we could not not do for ourselves. The wisdom of the cross is the standard for all life.

Mark's gospel answers two questions: who can give us access to God, and how will the do it? (Who is Jesus, and why he must die) Jesus clears the temple of money lenders and quotes Jeremiah 7 : "house of prayer for all nations, but you have made it a den of robbers" Both God and people are being robbed when they are denied access to God. Jesus curses the fig tree and it withers, indicating access to God will no longer be via a fruitless temple. Peter knows Jesus is the Christ, but does not yet understand why the Christ has to die. Like the blind man healed in two stages, he sees but not clearly. To be a follower of Christ is to deny yourself and take up your cross.

The Gospel of Matthew gives priority to Jesus' teaching, in the five discourses.

Appreciate both Jesus' deity and humanity, and avoid diminishing one at the expense of the other. Jesus teaches us as a human, and leads a physical existence. Jesus corrects wrong beliefs and wrong understandings. Following God has an order and priority. "Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness"

Jesus must do something for us, for us to belong to Him. In order to follow Jesus, a change in your life is necessary.

The washing of Peter's feet: unless Jesus does this for you, you will not be changed and belong to God. At the cross, God cleanses us and brings us into relationship with God.
The cross shaped life can't be imitated, and requires change at the cross. We must decide to be like Jesus every day.
