First four chapters of 1 Corinthians deal with the problem of dissention and arguments in the churc Chapter five deals with scandal Fundamental wrongs in the church: toleration of scandal (ch 5), divisions in the Lord's supper bringing the sacrament into disgrace. Paul quotes Levitical law, which condemns incest Jesus: not the minutest part of the law will pass away We are dealing with an awesome and holy God - who sees us in Christ Jesus

Last week's sermon explored why there was dissention in the church at Corinth, due to people taking for themselves the right of judgement, which belongs to God.

"Application"

"these things" refers to the teaching Paul has given the Corinthians, with metaphors of gardening, stewarding, and building.
"apply" transform from Corinthians to Pual and Apollos
"what is written" Corinthians are to make the Word (at the time, the OT) the basis for their living. This leads to appreciation and harmony, rather than dissention.

Teaching gifts were given to the church to deal with sects like Gnosticism. However, they reject these gifts due to spiritual pride and a distorted view of themselves as "arrived".

In the public arena / theatre is not a position of prestige or power, but of Christ who became a servant and was crucified. We are to present His sufferings to the world.
