Every corner of the room was filled, and it was just an extraordinary celebration. 00:01:27.439 --> 00:01:34.759 But one of the themes that we really explored together was this idea that we live in a our culture is very much entrenched in a sort of a pure materialistic atheism. 00:01:46.719 --> 00:01:51.080 In other words, the idea that there's no gods, no miracles, no magic, no mystery, nothing. human longing for the transcendent. 00:02:01.319 --> 00:02:07.500 And we talked about how these two forces, as we live life buffeted by these forces, 00:02:07.739 --> 00:02:10.239 we often feel 00:04:04.300 And so we want to look at that hope. 00:04:04.620 --> 00:04:07.060 And we want to do that by looking at 1 Peter. 00:04:07.820 --> 00:04:10.240 The book of 1 Peter is wonderfully appropriate 00:04:10.240 --> 00:04:12.400 because Peter wrote this letter to Christians 00:04:12.400 --> 00:04:14.719 who are spread out throughout Asia Minor, 00:04:14.920 --> 00:04:17.040 and they're living in a hostile culture. 00:04:17.160 --> 00:04:20.519 They're living in a culture where there are very few certainties 00:04:20.519 --> 00:04:25.199 that they will have any quality of life or life at all. 00:04:27.080 --> 00:04:29.340 So if you sort of skip ahead in 1 Peter, 00:04:29.339 --> 00:04:32.819 you see in chapter 2 that they're dealing with overbearing, 00:04:33.139 --> 00:04:36.219 brutal bosses who are mistreating them. 00:04:36.299 --> 00:04:38.279 So in their jobs, they're experiencing hardship. 00:04:39.039 --> 00:04:43.279 In chapter 3, you see that many of them are married to unbelieving spouses, 00:04:43.399 --> 00:04:45.759 and they're struggling in interfaith marriages. 00:04:46.719 --> 00:04:49.339 You see in chapter 4 that they're being mocked 00:04:50.059 --> 00:04:55.819 and persecuted by their pagan neighbors and associates. 00:04:55.819 --> 00:04:57.599 They're being made fun of and disrespected. 00:04:59.339 --> 00:05:02.159 And then in chapter 4, verses 12 to 18, 00:05:02.819 --> 00:05:08.179 it looks as though much more violent persecution is imminently on the horizon. 00:05:10.259 --> 00:05:11.919 And so all of this is happening, 00:05:13.060 --> 00:05:15.539 and Peter's writing this letter, 00:05:16.419 --> 00:05:21.019 and Peter begins writing this letter of hope by talking about Easter. 00:05:21.019 --> 00:05:26.240 He says the first thing you have to understand if you want to have any hope in this world 00:05:26.240 --> 00:05:29.579 is you have to understand Easter and what Easter means. 00:05:30.620 --> 00:05:31.919 And so that's what we're going to look at. 00:05:31.959 --> 00:05:33.019 We're just going to look at one verse. 00:05:33.099 --> 00:05:36.199 We just have time to look at one verse, one aspect of this. 00:05:36.899 --> 00:05:38.519 And it's 1 Peter 1, verse 3. 00:05:39.000 --> 00:05:40.719 And we're going to see this under three headers. 00:05:40.839 --> 00:05:42.339 We're going to see the foundation of our hope, 00:05:42.859 --> 00:05:44.079 the substance of our hope, 00:05:44.180 --> 00:05:45.639 and then the reason for our hope. 00:05:45.639 --> 00:05:48.779 So let's pray as we prepare to open God's Word together. 00:05:52.019 --> 00:05:53.779 Heavenly Father, first and foremost, 00:05:53.959 --> 00:05:56.800 we pray for whatever emergency is outside. to look at the foundation of the hope that we share. 00:06:34.840 --> 00:06:36.160 It says in verse 3, 00:06:36.379 --> 00:06:39.340 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 00:06:39.339 --> 00:06:41.179 according to His great mercy, 00:06:41.299 --> 00:06:43.759 He's caused us to be born again to a living hope 00:06:43.759 --> 00:06:48.819 through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 00:06:48.899 --> 00:06:50.099 So as we said a moment ago, 00:06:50.199 --> 00:06:55.019 the resurrection is a fact, 00:06:55.779 --> 00:06:56.899 it's an event, 00:06:57.339 --> 00:06:59.639 and it forms the foundation of our hope. 00:07:01.159 --> 00:07:02.959 Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15 00:07:02.959 --> 00:07:05.299 that Jesus, after His resurrection, 00:07:05.299 --> 00:07:07.519 appeared to more than 500 people. 00:07:07.519 --> 00:07:09.839 And he's saying this for a reason, 00:07:09.959 --> 00:07:11.719 because he's writing 1 Corinthians. 00:07:11.939 --> 00:07:15.399 1 Corinthians is the oldest account that we have. 00:07:15.539 --> 00:07:16.219 It was written, 00:07:16.680 --> 00:07:18.839 it's the oldest book that we have in the New Testament 00:07:18.839 --> 00:07:22.759 that was written the closest in proximity to the actual resurrection. 00:07:23.379 --> 00:07:25.000 So Paul is writing that letter, 00:07:25.879 --> 00:07:28.779 and he's saying this about 500 witnesses, 00:07:28.939 --> 00:07:30.779 because many of those people were still alive. 00:07:30.839 --> 00:07:31.959 And it's Paul's way of saying, 00:07:31.959 --> 00:07:32.939 if you don't believe me, 00:07:33.000 --> 00:07:34.120 go ask these people. 00:07:34.699 --> 00:07:35.399 They're everywhere. 00:07:35.699 --> 00:07:37.539 Go ask them and see what they say. 00:07:38.739 --> 00:07:39.819 And in Acts chapter 26, 00:07:40.099 --> 00:07:41.659 you have Paul before King Agrippa, 00:07:42.359 --> 00:07:44.519 and again he says about the resurrection of Jesus, 00:07:44.819 --> 00:07:45.819 he says to King Agrippa, 00:07:46.180 --> 00:07:47.680 you know that these things are true. 00:07:48.699 --> 00:07:51.500 You know that these things didn't happen in a closet. 00:07:52.099 --> 00:07:53.679 They didn't happen in a corner somewhere. 00:07:53.680 --> 00:07:58.400 So the debate then was not whether the resurrection happened. 00:07:58.540 --> 00:07:59.800 The debate was only concerning, 00:08:00.100 --> 00:08:01.680 how do we make sense of the resurrection? 00:08:02.720 --> 00:08:04.459 It's interesting when you have so many people 00:08:04.459 --> 00:08:06.699 who are trying to discredit Jesus and the early Christians, 00:08:07.180 --> 00:08:09.240 never do they try to discredit the resurrection. 00:08:10.240 --> 00:08:11.500 That's something that happened later. 00:08:13.480 --> 00:08:16.060 It's because too many people had seen it for themselves. 00:08:16.600 --> 00:08:18.480 So you have this public event, 00:08:19.699 --> 00:08:22.040 this public historic fact, 00:08:22.040 --> 00:08:24.020 and Peter makes it clear that this event 00:08:24.020 --> 00:08:25.580 is the whole reason we have hope. 00:08:27.000 --> 00:08:28.240 So the first point is this, 00:08:28.280 --> 00:08:29.500 is that our foundation 00:08:29.500 --> 00:08:32.700 is based on a public event, 00:08:33.000 --> 00:08:34.320 a historical fact. 00:08:34.840 --> 00:08:36.779 And the reason we're making a point of this, 00:08:36.840 --> 00:08:37.220 you may say, 00:08:37.300 --> 00:08:37.920 well, okay, well that, 00:08:38.100 --> 00:08:39.080 okay, so what? 00:08:40.420 --> 00:08:41.840 The reason this matters 00:08:41.840 --> 00:08:44.680 is because this is one of the things 00:08:44.680 --> 00:08:45.899 that makes Christianity unique. 00:08:46.639 --> 00:08:47.159 We talk about, 00:08:47.259 --> 00:08:49.200 well, why can we find hope in the Christian faith 00:08:49.200 --> 00:08:50.840 that we can't find anywhere? 00:08:50.840 --> 00:08:52.340 And here's one of the reasons. 00:08:53.019 --> 00:08:55.899 All religions have some element of belief, right? 00:08:55.960 --> 00:08:57.980 I mean, you think religion, faith, belief, 00:08:58.080 --> 00:08:59.120 they just kind of go together. 00:09:00.340 --> 00:09:03.480 But religious belief usually involves 00:09:03.480 --> 00:09:07.180 adopting the values and the lifestyle 00:09:07.180 --> 00:09:08.639 of the religious founder. 00:09:08.639 --> 00:09:11.819 So you read their teachings 00:09:11.819 --> 00:09:12.879 or you hear their teachings 00:09:12.879 --> 00:09:14.279 and you like what they have to say 00:09:14.279 --> 00:09:16.480 and so you believe in them, 00:09:17.039 --> 00:09:19.399 meaning you adopt their values 00:09:19.399 --> 00:09:20.500 and you begin to live in the way 00:09:20.500 --> 00:09:21.460 that they've prescribed. 00:09:24.000 --> 00:09:26.500 There are a lot of shoulds in religious belief. 00:09:26.639 --> 00:09:27.960 You should be a good person. 00:09:28.100 --> 00:09:29.259 You should not be greedy. 00:09:29.399 --> 00:09:30.899 You should care about other people. 00:09:31.039 --> 00:09:32.340 You should take care of the weak. 00:09:32.399 --> 00:09:33.340 All of these things 00:09:33.340 --> 00:09:36.340 that many religions in the world agree on 00:09:36.340 --> 00:09:37.159 are good things. 00:09:37.159 --> 00:09:40.199 But when Christians talk about belief, 00:09:40.419 --> 00:09:42.240 we actually mean something different. 00:09:42.419 --> 00:09:43.620 Christians don't, by definition, 00:09:43.759 --> 00:09:45.339 have religious beliefs. 00:09:47.639 --> 00:09:50.439 We have historical beliefs 00:09:50.439 --> 00:09:52.120 that have religious implications. 00:09:53.219 --> kind of like the difference 00:10:07.920 --> 00:10:11.100 between believing in the value of freedom 00:10:11.100 --> 00:10:13.840 and believing that slavery is wrong 00:10:13.840 --> 00:10:16.780 on the one hand 00:10:16.780 --> 00:10:21.680 versus believing that on January 31st, 1865, 00:10:21.980 --> 00:10:24.140 the 13th Amendment abolished slavery. 00:10:25.200 --> 00:10:25.760 Right? 00:10:25.820 --> 00:10:27.060 So one is a value 00:10:27.060 --> 00:10:29.260 and one is a historic fact. 00:10:29.259 --> 00:10:30.279 And so I'll just ask you, 00:10:30.639 --> 00:10:32.659 which 00:10:42.419 --> 00:10:45.259 versus, hey, good news. 00:10:46.539 --> 00:10:47.240 You're free. 00:10:48.360 --> 00:10:49.460 You may not know it. 00:10:49.519 --> 00:10:50.980 You may not have ever 00:11:08.620 And I think that they're going to help you 00:11:08.620 --> 00:11:09.719 learn how to live better 00:11:09.719 --> 00:11:12.019 and maybe have more success in your job 00:11:12.019 --> 00:11:14.059 and have more success in your relationships. 00:11:14.279 --> 00:11:15.360 And I think they're going to teach you 00:11:15.360 --> 00:11:17.099 how to do better in your love life. 00:12:06.659 to a living hope. 00:12:07.720 --> 00:12:09.100 So this is the substance. 00:12:09.299 --> 00:12:09.899 What do we have? 00:12:10.100 --> 00:12:11.560 What does the resurrection mean for
