year after the floods had started, Noah came out of the ark. 00:03:37.959 --> 00:03:41.899 And after Noah built an altar and worshiped, God made a covenant. 00:03:42.899 --> 00:03:46.799 God was pleased by the aroma that came from the altar. 00:03:46.800 --> 00:03:53.780 And the Lord makes a covenant not to ever destroy the earth with water because of us. 00:03:54.219 --> 00:03:57.439 Or strike down every living creature again. 00:03:58.200 --> 00:04:03.000 He then told them to get busy replenishing the earth and we've been doing that ever since. 00:04:03.560 --> 00:04:07.540 So what's the real message of the flood? 00:04:08.000 --> 00:04:13.180 What I want to do this morning is I want to summarize the flood event and the aftermath. 00:04:13.180 --> 00:04:17.560 And I believe it points to a summary of the gospel as well. 00:04:18.019 --> 00:04:19.340 The good news of Christ. 00:04:20.259 --> 00:04:22.459 Almost like a gospel presentation. 00:04:23.199 --> 00:04:24.259 I want you to see this. 00:04:25.079 --> 00:04:28.819 First thing you need to see is that our sin caused a curse. 00:04:31.160 --> 00:04:34.980 Our sin is more than a stone in the shoe of God. 00:04:35.819 --> 00:04:39.420 Our sin is not a lack of him getting his way. 00:04:39.420 --> 00:04:47.860 God's not some cosmic killjoy becoming insecure in his leadership because we do something different than what he tells us to do. 00:04:48.340 --> 00:04:53.259 Our sin is simply not an alternative way of living life. 00:04:53.980 --> 00:04:55.580 It's an offense to God. 00:04:56.120 --> 00:05:02.360 I want you to see the devastation that God felt when he looked at the state of the world. 00:05:02.840 --> 00:05:05.240 In Genesis 6, 5 and 6 it says this. 00:05:05.240 --> 00:05:13.040 The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 00:05:13.620 --> 00:05:19.500 And the Lord regretted that he made man on the earth and it grieved him to his heart. 00:05:20.439 --> 00:05:25.019 You need to understand that our sin is a slap in the face of God. 00:05:25.120 --> 00:05:29.180 Even Lord brought a cure. 00:06:38.620 --> 00:06:42.220 You could call it, you could call the flood the great reset if you would. 00:06:43.120 --> 00:06:45.680 Something had to fix it and God loves us so much. 00:06:45.680 --> 00:06:50.180 He doesn't want us to destroy the earth and ourselves with no regard. 00:06:50.300 --> 00:06:52.980 And that's why he does not ignore our sin. 00:06:53.660 --> his grace upon a sinful humanity. 00:07:59.480 --> 00:08:02.720 A humankind that has started a war against God. 00:08:03.520 --> 00:08:07.259 Whether that be by ignoring their very creator that created them. 00:08:07.700 --> 00:08:11.420 Or whether it be by shaking their fist at him and continuing in our rebellion of sin. 00:08:11.420 --> 00:08:15.300 A war that we could not win. 00:08:15.300 --> 00:08:18.640 A war that would destroy us. 00:08:19.580 --> 00:08:21.080 And so God responded. 00:08:22.080 --> 00:08:26.060 The rainbow is more than just a prism of beautiful colors. that he speaks of is the same word that is used for a bow as if shooting an arrow. 00:08:58.000 --> 00:09:03.759 God's wrath felt to the earth like a precision attack. 00:09:04.480 --> 00:09:07.539 As if he was using the weapons of that day. 00:09:08.139 --> 00:09:10.740 Like he aimed his bow at the earth. 00:09:11.740 --> 00:09:14.159 But with the arc of the rainbow. 00:09:14.159 --> 00:09:21.319 There is the picture of God not aiming that bow at the earth. 00:09:22.240 --> 00:09:26.419 But hanging that bow on the wall of the sky. 00:09:27.339 --> 00:09:30.480 Hanging up his wrath against them. 00:09:31.500 --> 00:09:34.019 He said he would not cut them off. 00:09:35.059 --> 00:09:37.899 Terms only used one other time in Genesis. 00:09:38.100 --> 00:09:41.740 And it speaks to anyone who would not enter into a covenant given to Abraham. 00:09:41.740 --> 00:09:45.180 When God says he will not cut you off. 00:09:45.379 --> 00:09:48.200 He is saying he will not give up on us. And that's where the summary of the gospel comes in. 00:10:12.399 --> 00:10:15.440 Because the gospel is that we are all sinners. 00:10:16.840 --> 00:10:18.240 Romans 3.23 says, 00:10:18.740 --> 00:10:21.299 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. 00:10:21.440 --> 00:10:23.340 We're all in the same boat, folks. 00:10:24.159 --> 00:10:27.279 And that sin, our sin, has caused a curse. 00:10:28.460 --> 00:10:30.360 Scripture is clear about what that curse is. 00:10:31.000 --> 00:10:34.779 In Romans 6.23, the wages of sin, the cost of penalty of sin is death. 00:10:34.779 --> 00:10:36.179 It's that separation. 00:10:36.339 --> 00:10:37.740 It's that chasm I spoke of. 00:10:38.220 --> 00:10:41.240 But the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. state. 00:11:14.220 --> 00:11:16.540 It says in Ephesians chapter 2. 00:11:17.220 --> 00:11:18.500 Beginning in verse 1. 00:11:19.379 --> 00:11:23.900 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins. 00:11:24.580 --> 00:11:26.320 In which you once walked. 00:11:27.280 --> 00:11:29.460 Following the course of this world. 00:11:29.460 --> 00:11:32.620 Following the prince of the power of the air.
