00:01:47.539 We don't fear that. 00:01:48.919 --> 00:01:50.619 So we celebrate that. 00:01:51.899 --> 00:01:59.099 But today, let's pledge our ultimate allegiance to the greatest of all kings, working through the Gospel of Matthew, we can't help but ask the question, 00:02:25.359 --> 00:02:27.060 Who is this guy, Jesus? 00:02:28.060 --> 00:02:33.139 And this morning, we're going to approach Matthew 16, asking the question, 00:02:33.139 --> 00:02:34.739 Who is this guy? 00:02:35.299 --> 00:02:41.239 And Matthew 16 is going to show us through again and again that this is the Christ. 00:02:56.219 And we're going to walk through four different little passages in anticipation for next week 00:02:56.219 --> 00:03:04.759 when we hear Jesus call us to follow him, to deny ourselves, to take up our crosses, 00:03:05.359 --> 00:03:08.460 and to follow him always and in everything. 00:03:08.460 --> 00:03:13.340 And so this morning, what I want to help you to see is, 00:03:14.340 --> 00:03:15.620 Who is this guy? 00:03:15.719 --> 00:03:16.900 He is the Christ. 00:03:17.780 --> 00:03:26.319 And what gives him the right to call us, to deny ourselves, take up our crosses, and follow him, 00:03:26.939 --> 00:03:31.640 what gives him the right is who he is and what he has done. 00:03:31.639 --> 00:03:38.959 So this morning, let's look at these four different sections of Matthew 16, 00:03:50.779 I'm going to read that. 00:03:50.859 --> 00:03:53.759 I'm going to come back, and we'll just kind of walk through it. 00:03:53.819 --> 00:03:57.639 So Matthew chapter 16, 1 through 4, 00:03:57.639 --> 00:04:24.279 Remember, he's speaking to the Pharisees and Sadducees. 00:04:24.279 --> 00:04:32.859 An adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. 00:04:33.619 --> 00:04:36.319 So he left them and departed. 00:04:36.459 --> 00:04:39.619 Now, as we've been working our way through the Gospel of Matthew, 00:04:39.839 --> 00:04:45.379 you may have just noticed that a new group of people has been introduced, the Sadducees. 00:04:45.899 --> 00:04:49.219 And a way to remember who the Sadducees are is to remember it this way. 00:04:49.220 --> 00:04:54.120 They were sad, you see, because they didn't believe in a resurrection. 00:04:56.100 --> 00:04:57.640 The Pharisees did. 00:04:58.780 --> 00:05:00.820 So the Pharisees believed in a resurrection. 00:05:01.320 --> 00:05:05.280 The Sadducees, who were sad, you see, because they didn't believe in a resurrection, 00:05:06.420 --> 00:05:08.920 they were at theological odds. 00:05:09.960 --> 00:05:11.000 But not here. 00:05:11.700 --> 00:05:12.360 Did you notice? 00:05:12.360 --> 00:05:18.120 Jesus, the Pharisees and the Sadducees, came together to test Jesus. 00:05:19.379 --> 00:05:23.600 Jesus has this uncanny way of uniting people who are at odds with each other. 00:05:24.340 --> 00:05:27.840 They unite in against him, in opposition to him. 00:05:27.920 --> 00:05:30.319 We'll see that if you know the Gospel of Luke, 00:05:30.759 --> 00:05:34.660 Pilate and Herod become friends at the end of Jesus' life, 00:05:34.660 --> 00:05:38.280 because they met each other and got to know another, worked some things out. 00:05:39.660 --> 00:05:44.020 Jesus has a way of uniting people for him and against him. 00:05:45.200 --> 00:05:48.380 Well, these two groups of people, the Pharisees and Sadducees, 00:05:48.500 --> 00:05:50.700 who are normally opposed to each other, 00:05:51.080 --> 00:05:53.640 they unite to oppose Jesus. 00:05:53.960 --> 00:05:56.620 And they came to test him, to challenge him. 00:05:57.220 --> 00:05:59.879 They're asking Jesus to show them a sign from heaven. 00:05:59.879 --> 00:06:02.879 And basically what they're saying is, hey, show us proof, 00:06:03.500 --> 00:06:05.819 demonstrate that you're legit. 00:06:06.360 --> 00:06:10.500 And in verses 2 and 3, Jesus responds by appealing to the weather. 00:06:12.180 --> 00:06:16.019 He says, hey, you guys can read the signs in the sky. 00:06:16.300 --> 00:06:18.040 You know if it's going to rain. 00:06:18.139 --> 00:06:19.519 You know if it's going to be threatening. 00:06:19.959 --> 00:06:24.259 Red sky at night or red sky and threatening in the morning. 00:06:24.480 --> 00:06:25.620 You know all these things. 00:06:25.620 --> 00:06:30.560 But then he says, if you look at verse 4, 00:06:30.860 --> 00:06:32.280 no, excuse me, at the end of verse 3, 00:06:32.840 --> 00:06:36.060 but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. 00:06:36.300 --> 00:06:38.180 Hey, you guys can read the weather just fine, 00:06:38.259 --> 00:06:42.740 but you cannot understand the signs of the times, 00:06:43.019 --> 00:06:46.959 namely that the age of the Messiah has come, 00:06:47.899 --> 00:06:51.259 that the kingdom of heaven has drawn near in me. 00:06:51.500 --> 00:06:52.459 You can't see it. 00:06:52.459 --> 00:06:57.759 Jesus goes on to say that their demand for a sign 00:06:57.759 --> 00:07:00.239 is just evidence that they're part of this evil 00:07:00.239 --> 00:07:01.759 and adulterous generation. 00:07:02.379 --> 00:07:04.079 They were asking for a sign, 00:07:04.159 --> 00:07:05.879 and even if Jesus did give them a sign, 00:07:05.959 --> 00:07:06.919 they would not have believed. 00:07:07.060 --> 00:07:07.859 They didn't believe. 00:07:10.439 --> 00:07:12.620 But Jesus doesn't leave them empty-handed. 00:07:13.359 --> 00:07:14.959 If you look at verse 4, he says, 00:07:15.099 --> 00:07:17.699 an evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, 00:07:17.699 --> 00:07:22.459 but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. 00:07:24.379 --> 00:07:27.620 This is the second time Jesus has referenced the sign of Jonah. 00:07:27.719 --> 00:07:30.079 He talked about it earlier in Matthew chapter 12. 00:07:30.480 --> 00:07:33.439 And if you remember Jonah, Jonah was a prophet on the run. 00:07:33.860 --> 00:07:37.659 He gets swallowed by a whale, is in the whale for three days, 00:07:37.939 --> 00:07:42.199 and he gets spit out by the whale, not in chunks. 00:07:42.680 --> 00:07:43.980 And he wasn't dead. 00:07:44.300 --> 00:07:45.439 He was alive. 00:07:45.439 --> 00:07:48.319 He was in the belly of a whale for three days, 00:07:48.480 --> 00:07:50.060 and he came out alive. 00:07:51.100 --> 00:07:53.480 And so what Jesus is talking about in Matthew 12, 00:07:53.639 --> 00:07:56.279 and here is, do you know what the sign of Jonah is? 00:07:56.959 --> 00:07:59.899 That Jesus won't, it's not a belly of a whale, 00:08:00.459 --> 00:08:03.879 the belly, the heart of the earth for three days, 00:08:04.079 --> 00:08:07.300 and he spends three days in the earth in a tomb, 00:08:07.659 --> 00:08:09.879 and he comes out alive. 00:08:09.879 --> 00:08:17.620 The sign of Jonah is pointing to the resurrection of Jesus. 00:08:18.920 --> 00:08:23.300 And so what Jesus is saying, these Pharisees and Sadducees, 00:08:23.439 --> 00:08:24.839 is that, hey, you want a sign? 00:08:25.019 --> 00:08:25.839 I'll give you a sign. 00:08:26.040 --> 00:08:27.240 It's the sign of Jonah, 00:08:27.399 --> 00:08:29.839 and we know that he's talking about his resurrection. 00:08:30.319 --> 00:08:31.180 They don't know. 00:08:31.540 --> 00:08:33.659 It's veiled to them. 00:08:33.659 --> 00:08:38.659 But what he veils here is going to be unveiled in verse 21. 00:08:38.939 --> 00:08:39.980 We'll wait on that. 00:08:40.959 --> 00:08:42.120 Now let me ask you a question. 00:08:43.600 --> 00:08:45.939 Have you ever asked this question, 00:08:46.120 --> 00:08:48.939 or has someone come up to you asking a question like this? 00:08:48.980 --> 00:08:49.279 You know what? 00:08:49.620 --> 00:08:55.799 I would believe in Jesus if only God would give me a sign that it's true. 00:08:57.039 --> 00:08:58.240 Someone comes up, you know what? 00:08:58.259 --> 00:08:59.779 I have a hard time with this Christianity thing, 00:08:59.779 --> 00:09:02.639 but if God gave me a sign, I would believe it. 00:09:03.740 --> 00:09:05.339 Do you know how you answer that question? 00:09:06.819 --> 00:09:08.220 God has given you a sign. 00:09:09.319 --> 00:09:10.600 It's the sign of Jonah. 00:09:11.699 --> 00:09:13.500 It's the resurrection of Jesus. 00:09:15.079 --> 00:09:16.860 It either happened or it didn't. 00:09:17.919 --> 00:09:20.360 One of the central claims of Christianity is that 00:09:20.360 --> 00:09:24.299 Jesus is the Christ who was crucified on a Roman cross, 00:09:24.679 --> 00:09:28.159 and three days later he was raised bodily from the dead, 00:09:28.159 --> 00:09:31.419 and that he's reigning right now and will one day come back. 00:09:32.399 --> 00:09:35.500 Now if the resurrection of Jesus didn't happen, 00:09:36.679 --> 00:09:39.100 Christianity is a waste of your time. 00:09:40.279 --> 00:09:43.199 But if the resurrection of Jesus did happen, 00:09:44.100 --> 00:09:48.459 that points that Jesus is who we claim to be, 00:09:48.659 --> 00:09:50.600 the Christ, the Son of the living God, 00:09:50.980 --> 00:09:53.959 fully God, fully man, one mediator between God and man, 00:09:53.960 --> 00:09:59.420 and that the death he died on the cross isn't just a historical event. 00:09:59.600 --> 00:10:01.840 It actually accomplished something. 00:10:02.540 --> 00:10:07.960 It accomplished a salvation, the salvation for sinners. 00:10:08.480 --> 00:10:11.820 So did you come in looking for a sign this morning to believe? 00:10:14.200 --> 00:10:15.540 A sign has been given. 00:10:15.539 --> 00:10:18.099 All people. 00:10:19.299 --> 00:10:23.799 Jesus died on a cross, and he was raised from the dead. 00:10:24.179 --> 00:10:29.559 Who is this guy that responds to a challenge like that? 00:10:31.059 --> 00:10:32.240 He's the Christ. 00:10:33.860 --> 00:10:35.919 Let's look at the next section. 00:10:37.519 --> 00:10:41.039 Jesus, the Christ, cautions his disciples. 00:10:41.679 --> 00:10:43.099 Look at verses 5 through 12. 00:10:43.100 --> 00:10:45.680 When the disciples reached the other side, 00:10:45.779 --> 00:10:47.700 they had forgotten to bring any bread. 00:10:47.840 --> 00:10:48.320 Oh, no. 00:10:49.600 --> 00:10:50.620 Jesus said to them, 00:10:51.000 --> 00:10:53.779 Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees. 00:10:53.960 --> 00:10:56.240 And they began discussing it among themselves, 00:10:56.420 --> 00:10:57.560 saying, We brought no bread. 00:10:57.659 --> 00:10:59.139 But Jesus, aware of this, said, 00:10:59.540 --> 00:11:00.460 Oh, you of little faith, 00:11:00.720 --> 00:11:03.639 why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? 00:11:04.080 --> 00:11:05.300 Do you not yet perceive? 00:11:05.460 --> 00:11:09.420 Do you not remember the five loaves for the 5,000 00:11:09.420 --> 00:11:10.779 and how many baskets you gathered? 00:11:10.779 --> 00:11:13.059 Or the seven loaves for the 4,000 00:11:13.059 --> 00:11:14.299 and how many baskets you gathered? 00:11:14.600 --> 00:11:16.679 How is it that you fail to understand 00:11:16.679 --> 00:11:18.419 that I do not speak about bread? 00:11:19.299 --> 00:11:21.519 Beware of the leaven 00:11:21.519 --> 00:11:25.539 of these Pharisees and Sadducees. 00:11:27.459 --> 00:11:29.659 Then they understood that he did not tell them 00:11:29.659 --> 00:11:31.139 to beware of the leaven of bread, 00:11:31.240 --> 00:11:33.959 but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. 00:11:33.960 --> 00:11:36.379 So here's what's going on. 00:11:36.440 --> 00:11:38.400 After being tested in Magadan, 00:11:39.960 --> 00:11:42.680 Jesus gets into a boat with the disciples 00:11:42.680 --> 00:11:44.980 and they start to cross the Sea of Galilee again. 00:11:45.019 --> 00:11:46.259 They're going to be heading north. 00:11:46.600 --> 00:11:48.720 They're going to end up in Caesarea Philippi. 00:11:49.340 --> 00:11:51.420 But when they reach the other side, 00:11:51.540 --> 00:11:52.680 the disciples realize, 00:11:53.220 --> 00:11:56.000 Oh, we do not have any bread. 00:11:56.000 --> 00:11:58.779 There wasn't a panera there. 00:12:01.220 --> 00:12:02.399 What are they going to do? 00:12:02.519 --> 00:12:03.940 Jesus takes the opportunity 00:12:03.940 --> 00:12:06.759 to kind of pull on the bread theme 00:12:06.759 --> 00:12:07.500 and he says, 00:12:07.960 --> 00:12:09.220 Watch and beware of the leaven 00:12:09.220 --> 00:12:10.860 of the Pharisees and Sadducees. 00:12:11.519 --> 00:12:13.100 Leaven was used to bake bread. 00:12:14.340 --> 00:12:17.379 The disciples take what Jesus says very literally. 00:12:19.440 --> 00:12:20.559 We brought no bread. 00:12:20.559 --> 00:12:25.059 Apparently the disciples thought 00:12:25.059 --> 00:12:28.719 that Jesus was referring to some kind of bread 00:12:28.719 --> 00:12:29.619 that they had gotten 00:12:29.619 --> 00:12:31.659 from the Pharisee and Sadducee bakery 00:12:31.659 --> 00:12:34.000 that they had forgotten. 00:12:36.139 --> 00:12:37.500 In verse 8, Jesus says, 00:12:37.939 --> 00:12:38.979 Oh, you little faith, 00:12:39.379 --> 00:12:40.979 why are you discussing among yourselves 00:12:40.979 --> 00:12:42.039 that you have no bread? 00:12:42.479 --> 00:12:44.519 And he goes on in verses 9 and 10 00:12:44.519 --> 00:12:46.319 to ask some rhetorical questions 00:12:46.319 --> 00:12:47.719 and they are to make a point. 00:12:48.319 --> 00:12:49.699 And it's basically saying this, 00:12:50.559 --> 00:12:52.379 If we were talking about bread guys 00:12:52.379 --> 00:12:54.599 and you guys forgot bread, 00:12:55.539 --> 00:12:56.919 do you guys not remember 00:12:56.919 --> 00:13:00.439 that I fed 5,000, fed 4,000 just guys? 00:13:00.559 --> 00:13:01.699 I mean, if you add it all up together, 00:13:01.979 --> 00:13:03.619 we're talking about 20,000 people 00:13:03.619 --> 00:13:05.179 that I multiplied bread for. 00:13:05.439 --> 00:13:08.159 If we were lacking bread guys, 00:13:08.439 --> 00:13:09.679 I could make it sinful desires 00:14:06.960 --> 00:14:08.180 of the heart, 00:14:08.180 --> 00:14:10.180 for emphasizing outward appearance, 00:14:11.080 --> 00:14:11.980 self-righteousness, 00:14:12.080 --> 00:14:14.100 for saying the very opposite 00:14:14.100 --> 00:14:16.500 of what they were doing. 00:14:16.639 --> 00:14:17.879 They were being hypocrites. 00:14:19.460 --> 00:14:21.259 They were tying to those who were harassed 00:14:54.399 --> 00:14:55.679 and helpless on the fringes 00:14:55.679 --> 00:14:56.319 of the culture. 00:14:56.320 --> 00:14:59.720 But most of all, 00:15:00.120 --> 00:15:17.740 So it's with good reason 00:15:17.740 --> 00:15:18.660 that Jesus warns 00:15:18.660 --> 00:15:19.300 his disciples 00:15:19.300 --> 00:15:21.580 against the misleading teachings 00:15:21.580 --> 00:15:22.580 of the Pharisees 00:15:22.580 --> 00:15:23.540 and of the Sadducees. 00:15:23.539 --> 00:15:25.319 their teaching 00:15:25.319 --> 00:15:26.699 is shutting the kingdom of 00:16:03.419 --> 00:16:04.439 And I just want to take 00:16:04.439 --> 00:16:04.839 a moment 00:16:04.839 --> 00:16:06.599 to caution you 00:16:06.599 --> 00:16:08.519 about a different kind 00:16:08.519 --> 00:16:09.019 of leaven 00:16:09.019 --> 00:16:10.459 that is in our culture. 00:16:11.459 --> 00:16:12.319 A different kind 00:16:12.319 --> 00:16:13.039 of teaching 00:16:13.039 -->
