Let's see where God is coming from as he utters these words. 00:03:31.599 --> 00:03:36.379 You might have noticed that this chapter 5 of the book of Isaiah has a parable at the start, 00:03:36.460 --> 00:03:37.759 from verses 1 to 7. 00:03:38.199 --> 00:03:40.400 So this is going to be our first section tonight. 00:03:40.500 --> 00:03:43.780 We're going to call it Sinning Against a Caring God. 00:03:44.199 --> 00:03:46.620 And then we'll look at verses 8 to 25, 00:03:47.060 --> 00:03:49.919 8 to 25, Sinning Against a Holy God. 00:03:49.919 --> 00:03:55.079 And then 26 through 30, Sinning Against a Sovereign God. 00:03:55.559 --> 00:04:01.500 So in case you're taking notes, Sinning Against a Caring, a Holy, and a Sovereign God. 00:04:03.119 --> 00:04:07.119 So let's look at the parable in the first seven verses of the passage. 00:04:08.500 --> 00:04:11.219 Isaiah sings for the one he loves. 00:04:11.319 --> 00:04:15.560 What a beautiful description of God, way of addressing God. 00:04:15.699 --> 00:04:18.459 And he sings about God's own vineyard. 00:04:18.459 --> 00:04:25.139 Look at the description at the start of the parable of all the love and care that God is putting into his vineyard. 00:04:25.639 --> 00:04:27.319 Even the location is ideal. 00:04:27.639 --> 00:04:29.879 It's on a fertile hillside. 00:04:30.319 --> 00:04:31.180 He digs it up. 00:04:31.500 --> 00:04:32.919 He clears it off stones. 00:04:33.240 --> 00:04:34.379 He plants the vines. 00:04:34.620 --> 00:04:35.759 And not any vines. 00:04:36.099 --> 00:04:37.219 The choicest vines. 00:04:37.899 --> 00:04:40.719 He builds a watchtower and winepress. 00:04:41.060 --> 00:04:42.599 The whole deal. 00:04:43.299 --> 00:04:44.219 And then he waits. 00:04:44.220 --> 00:04:52.460 Imagine the trepidation of this grapes grower as he waits for the vines to yield fruit. 00:04:53.360 --> 00:04:56.660 And planting a vine is no small endeavor. 00:04:56.660 --> 00:05:00.780 The people of Israel would have been aware of that. 00:05:02.060 --> 00:05:04.320 We don't see many vines in Scotland, of course. 00:05:04.460 --> 00:05:11.060 But in Mediterranean countries like Israel, then grapes, olives, and figs would have been the most common fruits to grow. 00:05:11.560 --> 00:05:14.040 The agricultural pride of a nation. 00:05:14.040 --> 00:05:18.700 And so God has lovely tended to his vineyard. 00:05:18.800 --> 00:05:22.480 And now he's excitedly, excitedly waiting for the fruit. 00:05:23.420 --> 00:05:31.540 But instead of beautiful, juicy, sweet grapes, what he finds in his hands is sour grapes. 00:05:32.379 --> 00:05:34.540 And he knows it's not down to him. 00:05:35.120 --> 00:05:39.920 Unlike me raising a child, he knows that he didn't make any mistakes. 00:05:39.920 --> 00:05:43.040 He knows that nothing more could have been done. 00:05:44.160 --> 00:05:50.000 So he's bringing the people of Jerusalem to this imaginary trial as witnesses and judges. 00:05:50.480 --> 00:05:51.699 And he says, look at this. 00:05:52.000 --> 00:05:53.800 I have nothing to hide. 00:05:54.960 --> 00:05:59.040 You all see I did do all that could be done. 00:06:00.620 --> 00:06:04.939 And so what's the point in keeping a vineyard that won't produce fruit? 00:06:04.939 --> 00:06:11.480 So verses 5 and 6 describe the ruin of this vineyard. 00:06:12.139 --> 00:06:13.060 They're sad verses. 00:06:13.259 --> 00:06:16.219 He's not taking any pleasure in destroying it. 00:06:16.860 --> 00:06:18.540 He puts so much effort into it. 00:06:18.959 --> 00:06:24.300 But now he removes its protections and the vineyard is devoured and trampled down. 00:06:24.779 --> 00:06:27.779 It will become just an abandoned wasteland. 00:06:28.220 --> 00:06:29.720 And no rain will fall on it. 00:06:29.720 --> 00:06:35.160 It's a beautifully written but a very tragic parable. 00:06:35.300 --> 00:06:36.940 And I think the whole chapter is really. 00:06:37.360 --> 00:06:40.480 Such poetic, beautifully crafted language. 00:06:40.920 --> 00:06:45.760 But what a heartbreaking message God has given to his people through his prophet. 00:06:47.680 --> 00:06:50.480 So verse 7 decodes the parable for us. 00:06:50.980 --> 00:06:54.160 Of course, the grapes grower is the Lord Almighty. 00:06:54.160 --> 00:07:01.800 And the vineyard and the vines are Israel and Judah not producing the fruit that are expected. 00:07:02.380 --> 00:07:04.780 Because God expected justice from them. 00:07:05.240 --> 00:07:07.260 But he found bloodshed instead. 00:07:07.700 --> 00:07:08.940 He expected righteousness. 00:07:09.520 --> 00:07:12.540 But what heard instead was cries of distress. 00:07:13.060 --> 00:07:14.660 He expected good grapes. 00:07:15.020 --> 00:07:17.020 But he got bad grapes. 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:19.560 So what does this mean? 00:07:19.560 --> 00:07:24.980 It means that his people were doing the exact opposite of what they were expected to do. 00:07:25.399 --> 00:07:28.280 They were everything they should have not been. 00:07:29.759 --> 00:07:31.160 God was looking for obedience. 00:07:31.680 --> 00:07:36.160 God was looking for lives in keeping with the law of God. 00:07:36.560 --> 00:07:44.259 And not because he's just, you know, a big-headed, capricious boss who likes to see people run around to please him. 00:07:44.259 --> 00:07:53.360 It's because God knows that not keeping his law disobedience will result in bloodshed and distress. 00:07:53.800 --> 00:07:58.860 Because when we, when people stray away from God, they produce evil. freed them from their enemies. 00:08:19.779 --> 00:08:22.500 He led them in battle time and time again. 00:08:23.479 --> 00:08:28.939 God could have not shown his love for his people any better than he had. 00:08:29.139 --> 00:08:31.859 Just like the parable of the vineyard describes. 00:08:33.480 --> 00:08:40.539 Because all that love intending to in the vineyard is an illustration of everything that we read about in the Old Testament. 00:08:40.539 --> 00:08:43.500 Be it freeing Israel from Egypt. 00:08:44.179 --> 00:08:46.740 Or conquering Canaan for them. 00:08:47.240 --> 00:08:50.599 Or leading David in his many triumphs. 00:08:50.860 --> 00:08:55.679 What else could have God done to show Israel his love and power? 00:08:55.799 --> 00:08:58.919 To put them in a position to produce good graves. 00:08:59.099 --> 00:08:59.779 Obedience. 00:09:00.480 --> 00:09:02.719 Justice and righteousness as verse 7 says. 00:09:02.720 --> 00:09:06.440 Now, we're not the people of Israel. 00:09:07.300 --> 00:09:13.480 This message of Isaiah was not written with us as 21st century British residents in mind. 00:09:14.040 --> 00:09:17.460 But that doesn't make it any less relevant to us. He was fulfilling all the promises made not only to the people of Israel but to the whole of humanity. 00:09:40.180 --> 00:09:43.660 Promises that we see all over the Old Testament. 00:09:43.659 --> 00:09:47.740 And particularly in this very same book of Isaiah. 00:09:48.539 --> 00:09:50.259 Promises to do with the Messiah. 00:09:51.179 --> 00:09:55.319 His son Jesus whom he sent to the cross to die for our sins. 00:09:55.719 --> 00:10:00.879 To take our place at the receiving end of God's holy wrath. 00:10:01.879 --> 00:10:06.740 So if we're ever tempted to read verses like this vineyard parable and think. 00:10:06.740 --> 00:10:09.120 What an ungrateful bunch. 00:10:10.120 --> 00:10:11.180 These Israelites were. 00:10:11.480 --> 00:10:17.440 I would have never turned my back on the God who led my people in a pillar of fire and cloud. 00:10:17.680 --> 00:10:21.100 It was so clear that they had a powerful God with them. 00:10:21.879 --> 00:10:23.600 And we want to stop and rethink. 00:10:24.399 --> 00:10:29.139 Because isn't it all the clearer to us on this side of history. 00:10:29.379 --> 00:10:34.440 Where we can witness that yes, God did fulfill his messianic what the sour grapes look like. 00:12:24.019 --> 00:12:26.480 How the people of Israel disobeyed to God. 00:12:26.540 --> 00:12:27.639 And how he punished them. 00:12:28.379 --> 00:12:31.320 But also a glorious and majestic. 00:12:31.519 --> 00:12:33.000 A terrifying even picture. 00:12:33.360 --> 00:12:34.860 Of God's holiness. 00:12:34.860 --> 00:12:36.300 Of his wrath. 00:12:37.259 --> 00:12:40.659 And his complete sovereignty over his people. 00:12:41.320 --> 00:12:42.860 There are six woes. 00:12:43.000 --> 00:12:45.379 From verses 8 to 25. 00:12:45.580 --> 00:12:47.259 And they describe the sinfulness of the people. 00:12:47.600 --> 00:12:51.379 And the punishment that they receive from God in return. 00:12:52.300 --> 00:12:55.279 And we will not stop and consider them all the land that God had given them. 00:13:12.639 --> 00:13:13.419 As he intended. 00:13:14.559 --> 00:13:16.959 Who have let wealth go to their heads. 00:13:17.039 --> 00:13:18.860 And are not taking care of each other. 00:13:19.199 --> 00:13:23.000 They're not sharing with their neighbours as they've been commanded to. 00:13:23.500 --> 00:13:26.679 But instead the rich are robbing their fellow Israelites. 00:13:27.039 --> 00:13:30.639 Of God's blessing in the form of the land that he'd given them. 00:13:30.639 --> 00:13:34.500 And so God will punish them by making these estates worthless. 00:13:35.600 --> 00:13:39.600 Second woe is to those who devote themselves to the pleasures of life. 00:13:39.759 --> 00:13:44.000 Whose life is but a big alcohol-fuelled party. 00:13:44.259 --> 00:13:44.779 Verse 11. 00:13:45.259 --> 00:13:48.279 And the problem of course is not the alcohol in itself. 00:13:48.379 --> 00:13:50.740 Or the musical instruments that you see mentioned there. who cares so much for them. 00:15:07.960 --> 00:15:10.220 That he did everything that he could. 00:15:10.519 --> 00:15:13.259 So that they would choose to glorify him with their obedience. 00:15:13.919 --> 00:15:16.740 They're also sinning against the holy God. 00:15:16.740 --> 00:15:21.480 And holy means that he cannot. 00:15:21.840 --> 00:15:23.840 He cannot tolerate sin. 00:15:25.220 00:16:12.639 Let's read verses 15 and 16. 00:16:12.639 --> 00:16:16.699 So people will be brought low. 00:16:16.699 --> 00:16:17.699 And everyone humbled. 00:16:18.639 --> 00:16:20.679 The eyes of the arrogant humbled. 00:16:21.019 --> 00:16:22.939 Do you see the downward direction? 00:16:23.360 --> 00:16:24.439 But the Lord Almighty. 00:16:24.699 --> 00:16:25.919 He will be exalted. 00:16:26.340
