00:03:44.099 some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead. 00:03:44.819 --> 00:03:49.439 And throughout this passage, that the dead are not raised. 00:03:49.439 --> 00:03:54.699 And we get a little bit of a clue down in verse 29 as to what they really mean here. 00:03:55.180 --> 00:03:55.759 He says, 00:03:55.859 --> 00:03:57.800 If the dead are not raised at all. 00:03:59.560 --> 00:04:07.620 Some of the Corinthians are categorically denying that there is resurrection of the dead. 00:04:07.620 --> 00:04:12.480 And whether that's even a thing that ever happens at all. And this kind of goes back to Paul's letter to Timothy, 00:04:50.439 --> 00:04:54.580 in which he warns them about Hymenaeus and Philetus, 00:04:54.939 --> 00:04:58.720 two men who were saying and teaching that the resurrection has already happened. 00:04:58.720 --> 00:05:03.120 And so that's one of the possibilities, 00:05:03.440 --> 00:05:05.100 is that these Corinthians, 00:05:05.380 --> 00:05:07.380 they believe that it's already happened. 00:05:08.100 --> 00:05:09.960 And if we look throughout history, 00:05:10.080 --> 00:05:13.840 we see evidence of people who actually believe this. 00:05:14.520 --> 00:05:18.120 One line of thinking is that the resurrection is just a spiritual thing. 00:05:19.180 --> 00:05:21.300 You're resurrected inside. 00:05:21.540 --> 00:05:23.180 Your 00:05:47.339 --> 00:05:48.019 they were immortal 00:05:48.019 --> 00:05:50.539 and that they weren't ever going to die, 00:05:51.079 --> 00:05:53.519 that they were just going to keep living forever. 00:05:53.519 --> 00:05:56.299 kind of like Highlander, 00:05:56.379 --> 00:05:57.779 if you've ever seen that. 00:06:00.539 --> 00:06:02.379 I'm not going to say any more about that, 00:06:02.479 --> 00:06:03.659 but this theory, 00:06:04.299 --> 00:06:06.079 the problem with it is that 00:06:06.079 --> 00:06:07.979 Paul says that these are those 00:06:07.979 --> 00:06:10.740 who are saying that there is no resurrection. 00:06:11.439 --> 00:06:14.339 Not those that are saying it has already taken place. 00:06:14.419 --> 00:06:17.180 So it's probably not who he's referring to. 00:06:17.180 --> 00:06:18.980 The second theory is that 00:06:18.980 --> 00:06:21.560 these people are people who are 00:06:21.560 --> 00:06:25.879 essentially denying that there is any life after death at all. Paul's day, 00:06:49.100 --> 00:06:52.300 some of them believe that there was no afterlife. 00:06:54.079 --> 00:06:56.780 And I was shocked to find this out, 00:06:56.840 --> 00:07:03.060 but apparently there's the tombstones that they found 00:07:03.060 --> 00:07:06.000 that have an inscription on them. 00:07:06.079 --> 00:07:07.680 And the inscription goes like this, 00:07:07.680 --> common, 00:07:20.519 --> 00:07:22.980 apparently so common that they abbreviated that 00:07:22.980 --> 00:07:25.420 into just the first letters of those statements. 00:07:25.639 --> 00:07:27.819 And this was on people's tombstones. 00:07:28.600 --> 00:07:30.980 I was kind of shocked to find that out. 00:07:31.819 --> 00:07:35.040 The idea that there's nothing. 00:07:35.399 --> 00:07:36.800 You culture, 00:08:02.460 --> 00:08:05.800 the religious views and beliefs that they had 00:08:05.800 --> 00:08:08.980 were kind of very much this idea that when you die, 00:08:09.259 --> 00:08:11.280 your soul is separated from your body. 00:08:12.100 --> 00:08:16.220 And you can almost think of it in terms of like 00:08:16.220 --> 00:08:18.240 the bird being let out of the cage, 00:08:18.860 -->
