supernatural? 00:04:16.620 --> 00:04:20.659 Well, for many, it's something dark and sinister 00:04:20.659 --> 00:04:24.259 and associated more with the occult, 00:04:24.879 --> 00:04:29.060 such as the cult series on TV called Supernatural, 00:04:29.620 --> 00:04:32.259 which is all about two brothers fighting demons 00:04:32.259 --> 00:04:33.939 and the devil himself. 00:04:33.939 --> 00:04:39.639 Now, why we don't deny the reality of demons and the devil, 00:04:40.279 --> 00:04:41.980 for our purposes this morning, 00:04:42.680 --> 00:04:44.100 the supernatural is this, 00:04:44.180 --> 00:04:46.959 and I've got it up on the overhead, the screen. 00:04:48.100 --> 00:04:51.240 A supernatural act is a God intervention 00:04:51.240 --> 00:04:57.899 which is not better people, 00:06:19.019 --> 00:06:20.939 chapter 8 is this intervention 00:06:20.939 --> 00:06:25.039 to introduce us to the supernatural life 00:06:25.039 --> 00:06:29.339 that enables us to live God's way. 00:06:29.339 --> 00:06:34.099 Now, this life, this supernatural life, 00:06:34.379 --> 00:06:36.679 is only possible by the Holy Spirit. 00:06:37.560 --> 00:06:40.679 Now, before we get into this chapter in more detail, 00:06:41.259 --> 00:06:45.079 we must understand who and what the Holy Spirit does 00:06:45.079 --> 00:06:47.199 because there's a lot of talk about the Holy Spirit 00:06:47.199 --> 00:06:48.439 and there's a lot of confusion. 00:06:49.299 --> 00:06:51.919 And while Romans 8 doesn't give us all the answers, 00:06:52.479 --> 00:06:55.379 it does give us some very Spirit is not a thing or an it. 00:07:04.639 --> 00:07:07.159 The Holy Spirit is a person, 00:07:07.920 --> 00:07:09.800 the person of Christ. 00:07:10.100 --> 00:07:11.060 Look at verse 9. 00:07:11.060 --> 00:07:17.379 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature, 00:07:17.540 --> 00:07:18.420 but by the Spirit, 00:07:18.540 --> 00:07:21.100 if the Spirit of God lives in you. 00:07:21.780 --> 00:07:24.620 And if anyone doesn't have the Spirit of Christ, 00:07:25.139 --> 00:07:26.920 he doesn't belong to Christ. 00:07:28.139 --> 00:07:33.319 So, the Spirit of God is the And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead 00:08:12.480 --> 00:08:15.319 is living in you, 00:08:16.400 --> 00:08:17.819 the Spirit is in you. 00:08:18.259 --> 00:08:20.140 In fact, it's 00:08:48.840 is living in you, 00:08:49.379 --> 00:08:51.800 he who raised Christ from the dead 00:08:51.800 --> 00:08:55.200 will also give life to your mortal bodies 00:08:55.200 --> 00:08:58.220 --> 00:09:45.360 to be partners 00:09:45.360 --> 00:09:47.980 in God's global mission. 00:09:49.139 --> 00:09:52.259 Now, none of us are going to get anywhere near that 00:09:52.259 --> 00:09:54.980 without the Holy Spirit at work. 00:09:56.019 --> 00:09:57.559 And that's what the Spirit does. 00:09:57.679 --> 00:09:59.919 He is God's giving life, 00:10:00.179 --> 00:10:01.959 his power to his people 00:10:01.959 --> 00:10:04.919 to enable us to live the kind of life 00:10:04.919 --> 00:10:06.139 that he has called us to 00:10:06.139 --> 00:10:07.939 so that we can be united 00:10:07.939 into the text 00:10:17.579 --> 00:10:20.559 and see what this supernatural life 00:10:20.559 --> 00:10:22.740 looks like in reality. 00:10:24.439 --> 00:10:25.719 The first thing is 00:10:25.719 --> 00:10:28.479 is that we are freed by the Spirit. 00:10:29.779 --> 00:10:31.219 The Holy Spirit 00:10:31.220 --> 00:10:33.460 applies the finished 00:10:33.460 --> 00:10:36.060 and completed work of 00:11:12.859 to become better people, 00:11:13.019 --> 00:11:14.500 to add more rules 00:11:14.500 --> 00:11:15.659 and laws to our life 00:11:15.659 --> 00:11:17.399 and to try and change ourselves. 00:11:18.879 --> 00:11:20.859 But as we've seen over the weeks, 00:11:20.959 --> 00:11:22.939 we haven't got the power to change us. 00:11:23.159 --> 00:11:24.639 It doesn't matter how many rules 00:11:24.639 --> 00:11:25.599 you put in place, 00:11:26.159 --> 00:11:28.359 it just means we've got more rules to break. 00:11:28.360 --> 00:11:29.759 It doesn't change us. 00:11:30.120 --> Well, look at verse 2. 00:12:12.399 --> 00:12:13.299 It tells us, 00:12:14.100 --> 00:12:15.220 through Christ Jesus, 00:12:15.399 --> 00:12:17.399 the law of the Spirit of life 00:12:17.399 --> 00:12:19.120 sets us free 00:12:19.120 --> 00:12:21.059 from the law of sin and death. 00:12:21.059 --> 00:12:22.139 The Spirit, 00:12:22.939 --> 00:12:24.939 His work is to take the finished 00:12:24.939 --> 00:12:26.539 and completed work of Christ 00:12:26.539 --> 00:12:28.739 and to apply it to our lives. 00:12:28.879 --> 00:12:31.239 He takes the work of Christ on the cross 00:12:31.239 --> 00:12:33.039 and He makes it a reality 00:12:33.039 --> 00:12:34.439 in our lives. 00:12:34.579 --> 00:12:36.239 He opens up our minds 00:12:36.239 --> 00:12:37.779 so that we can see 00:12:54.740 which I do, 00:12:55.019 --> 00:12:56.299 and you do as well, 00:12:57.259 --> 00:12:59.199 all of our disobedience 00:12:59.199 --> 00:13:01.479 has been, past tense, 00:13:01.839 --> 00:13:04.000 been dealt with by Christ. 00:13:04.359 --> 00:13:07.120 And the Spirit continually applies 00:13:07.120 --> 00:13:08.919 the work of Christ to our lives 00:13:08.919 --> 00:13:11.479 so that we are forever free 00:13:11.480 --> 00:13:13.480 from His condemnation. 00:13:14.279 --> 00:13:17.000 We will never, ever be condemned 00:13:17.000 --> 00:13:19.600 because the Spirit
