00:00:28.879 And interestingly, 109 years ago, the very first words to be spoken over AM radio 00:00:28.879 --> 00:00:32.119 were some of the words that we're going to look at this morning. 00:00:32.600 --> 00:00:33.799 We're going to see some of these words. 00:00:34.539 --> 00:00:40.299 A guy named Reginald Fessenden, of all people, was the one who invented the AM radio. 00:00:41.119 --> 00:00:43.899 And at first, all it could do was transmit Morse code, 00:00:44.500 --> 00:00:48.259 which is a pretty big deal back then to transmit anything over radio waves. 00:00:49.320 --> 00:00:55.719 He was one of Thomas Edison's chief inventors and having been let go for financial reasons. 00:00:56.519 --> 00:00:58.460 He began to do this work on his own. 00:00:58.460 --> 00:01:03.579 He began to work out all the details of being able to communicate over the airwaves. 00:01:04.200 --> 00:01:09.420 And ships all up and down the Atlantic coast would hear the tap, tap, tap, tap of the Morse code 00:01:09.420 --> 00:01:12.500 as they were sailing their ships up and down the Atlantic. 00:01:14.019 --> 00:01:16.340 So he worked out this new way of communicating. 00:01:36.599 And so on Christmas Eve, 1906, with no press release, no email blasts, no billboards, no news media, 00:01:37.120 --> 00:01:42.159 just the silence of AM radio in the middle of the night 00:02:13.960 Can you imagine being a ship captain out on the Atlantic and you're used to just hearing the tap, tap, tap, tap of the Morse code 00:02:13.960 --> 00:02:15.259 coming through your AM radio. 00:02:15.539 --> 00:02:18.259 And all of a sudden on Christmas Eve, you're all alone. 00:02:18.340 --> 00:02:23.099 You're up on your, what do you call it, a bridge and you're sailing your ship. 00:02:23.240 --> 00:02:26.659 And all of a sudden, you start to hear a human voice. 00:02:27.540 --> 00:02:31.400 A human voice sharing great news of great joy. 00:02:31.400 --> 00:02:36.240 A Savior has been born to you and he is Christ the Lord. 00:02:38.439 --> 00:02:43.439 I think what I love about that story the most is that it reminds me of the way that Jesus came into the world. 00:02:44.420 --> 00:02:54.240 There's no news broadcast, no front page cover story, just Mary and Joseph, a humble couple with a humble child born into humble circumstances. 00:02:55.040 --> 00:03:01.319 And just a few shepherds who are fortunate enough to hear of the good news of great joy. 00:03:01.400 --> 00:03:06.620 For unto you a child is born and he is Christ the Lord. 00:03:07.719 --> 00:03:08.719 Beautiful story. 00:03:09.879 --> 00:03:11.500 That's the way it was on that night. 00:03:11.620 --> 00:03:14.219 There was nothing particularly special about that night. 00:03:14.860 --> 00:03:17.280 There was nothing perfect about that night. 00:03:17.879 --> 00:03:20.040 They only had a manger to lay him in. 00:03:21.099 --> 00:03:26.200 But there was one thing perfect about that night and it was the child. 00:03:27.480 --> 00:03:28.819 He was perfect in every way. 00:03:28.819 --> 00:03:36.439 And so I think for us to fully appreciate that moment in history, the moment when Jesus was born, we have to travel back several hundred years. 00:03:36.979 --> 00:03:41.139 And we are, our focus this morning, by the way, is on the love of Christ. 00:03:41.620 --> 00:03:43.139 It's our Advent focus for this morning. 00:03:43.819 --> 00:03:48.659 So we want to be focusing on his love by taking a look first and foremost at his birth. 00:03:48.659 --> 00:03:52.900 But to fully appreciate that, we have to look at some of the prophecies foretelling Christ. 00:03:53.599 --> 00:03:57.039 There are many, there are hundreds of prophecies foretelling the coming of Christ. 00:03:57.120 --> 00:03:58.979 We're only going to look at two this morning. 00:03:59.039 --> 00:04:00.340 We really only have time for two. 00:04:01.079 --> 00:04:04.439 And as I read these, I want you to consider two threads that run throughout Scripture. 00:04:05.060 --> 00:04:09.319 One of them being promise and the other one being fulfillment. 00:04:09.319 --> 00:04:13.359 And so as I read these, I want you to consider these two things. 00:04:13.479 --> 00:04:18.219 The promise being much of the Old Testament would fall into that category of promise, 00:04:18.219 --> 00:04:26.459 while the New Testament is the recording of the fulfillment of those promises given hundreds or sometimes even thousands of years before Jesus was ever born. 00:04:27.399 --> 00:04:32.199 And so we have these prophecies that stem back as far as even Genesis chapter 3. 00:04:32.199 --> 00:04:39.779 We talked about this even with our children in Aletheia Way, where we're talking about, we talk about the snake crusher, right? 00:04:39.839 --> 00:04:41.519 The snake crusher that was to come. 00:04:41.779 --> 00:04:45.300 Even back in Genesis 3, we have prophecy of Jesus. 00:04:46.819 --> 00:04:56.659 And so as I read these promises, I want you to consider that not a single one of the Old Testament writers knew a single one of the New Testament writers. 00:04:56.660 --> 00:05:02.300 There's too much of a gap between them for them to have known any of them, to have known each other. 00:05:02.480 --> 00:05:07.760 So the Old Testament writers couldn't have even known that there would be a New Testament during their time. 00:05:08.820 --> 00:05:14.960 And so it's not like someone came along in the Old Testament and saying, I'm just going to fabricate this elaborate story. book. 00:05:35.599 --> 00:05:48.799 We think of it like a book sometimes, but it's really a compilation of 66 different books with over 40 different authors and all of them telling the same story, the have a hard time understanding what exactly that they mean by that. 00:06:02.560 --> 00:06:04.660 What exactly do you mean that you don't believe the Bible? 00:06:04.720 --> 00:06:05.980 You don't like the books of history? 00:06:06.759 --> 00:06:12.560 Because so much biblical history, in fact, all biblical history goes hand in hand with extra biblical history. 00:06:12.560 --> 00:06:13.920 We see that. 00:06:14.079 --> 00:06:18.759 We can compare different texts outside the Bible to the Bible, and everything lines up perfectly. 00:06:19.540 --> 00:06:20.780 Is it the books of poetry? of them have been fulfilled. 00:06:27.199 --> 00:06:33.319 In fact, all of them about the person of Christ have been fulfilled through Christ. 00:06:33.800 --> 00:06:34.899 Is it the gospels? 00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:46.539 You have a hard time believing four separate accounts, all telling the same stories of the same man who died upon the cross for our sins, which, by the way, all perfectly line up together. 00:06:46.659 --> 00:06:55.019 The reason why the whole story lines up together, and I want you guys to get this this morning before we jump into the text, before we even begin to start reading scriptures, 00:06:55.019 --> 00:07:02.519 the reason why all of it works together is because God's word is truth, and we can take it as truth this morning. 00:07:03.039 --> 00:07:06.000 And it rings into our lives unlike anything else. 00:07:06.579 --> 00:07:08.339 So we're going to take a look at Isaiah 714. 00:07:08.479 --> 00:07:09.479 You don't have to turn there. 00:07:09.839 --> 00:07:13.560 Just keep your hand inside of Luke chapter 1 for now. 00:07:14.120 --> 00:07:19.799 Isaiah 714 is a short prophecy, but it reveals so much about who Christ was supposed to be. 00:07:19.899 --> 00:07:24.740 So Isaiah 714, written roughly 700 years before Jesus was born. 00:07:25.019 --> 00:07:27.799 Before the birth of Christ, it says this, 00:07:28.099 --> 00:07:31.159 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. 00:07:31.979 --> 00:07:38.759 Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and call his name Emmanuel. 00:07:40.319 --> 00:07:45.859 So God says the answer to this sin problem, and we all of us have a sin problem. 00:07:45.859 --> 00:07:53.359 The answer to this sin problem is Emmanuel, which literally means God with us. 00:07:53.360 --> 00:07:53.939 God with us. 00:07:54.439 --> 00:07:55.939 God with us. 00:07:56.000 --> 00:08:00.180 And so we see from this prophecy that God is coming into human history. 00:08:00.939 --> 00:08:02.960 He's going to dwell among his people. 00:08:03.060 --> 00:08:04.340 He's going to visit the planet. 00:08:04.840 --> 00:08:07.720 And how will we know that this Emmanuel has come? 00:08:08.879 --> 00:08:11.680 According to Isaiah, you look for the virgin mother. 00:08:12.960 --> 00:08:17.420 It says the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and call his name Emmanuel. 00:08:17.420 --> 00:08:22.860 Micah 5.2, also written roughly 700 years before Jesus was born. 00:08:24.199 --> 00:08:28.340 But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, too little to be among the clans of Judah. 00:08:28.699 --> 00:08:33.139 From you one will go forth for me to be a ruler in Israel. 00:08:33.700 --> 00:08:37.200 His goings forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity. 00:08:37.200 --> 00:08:46.740 And so from these and other prophecies, the expectation and the anticipation was that a hero was coming, a savior, a child. 00:08:47.480 --> 00:08:52.160 He was going to be born from a virgin mother in the town of Bethlehem. 00:08:53.000 --> 00:08:54.259 Now that's pretty specific, right? 00:08:54.860 --> 00:08:59.780 A lot of things had to happen in order for this child to come into the world. 00:08:59.779 --> 00:09:04.879 And everyone was anticipating and awaiting the miraculous appearance of God. 00:09:06.220 --> 00:09:08.360 Hundreds of years before he would ever arrive. 00:09:09.259 --> 00:09:17.819 In that 700-year period of time, there is a 400-year gap between the two Testaments, between the Old Testament and the New Testament. 00:09:19.360 --> 00:09:26.740 For thousands of years, in this gap that we see, God has essentially fallen silent. 00:09:26.740 --> 00:09:33.659 For hundreds of years before this, God had been working in and through his people in tremendous ways. 00:09:33.820 --> 00:09:35.580 God made covenants with his people. 00:09:35.700 --> 00:09:38.080 He spoke audibly at times to people. 00:09:38.680 --> 00:09:44.120 He designed an intricate sacrificial system by which they were to use to atone for their sins. 00:09:44.539 --> 00:09:47.240 He worked through kings who were faithful to him and his word. 00:09:47.740 --> 00:09:49.860 He spoke mightily through prophets. 00:09:50.419 --> 00:09:54.080 Seventeen books dedicated in the Old Testament to prophecy. 00:09:54.080 --> 00:10:02.580 Prophecies of a coming king who would be born of a virgin in the town of Bethlehem who would go forth as a ruler among the people. 00:10:03.400 --> 00:10:07.879 And then as suddenly as all this communication from God had begun, it just stops. 00:10:09.340 --> 00:10:11.320 400 years of silence. 00:10:13.080 --> 00:10:16.759 Imagine the questions that must have been going through the minds of the people of God. 00:10:18.259 --> 00:10:19.500 Where has God gone? 00:10:19.500 --> 00:10:22.820 Why did he stop communicating to us? 00:10:22.840 --> 00:10:23.980 Was it something that we did? 00:10:24.059 --> 00:10:25.059 Was it something that we said? 00:10:26.320 --> 00:10:29.019 And then think of the longing they must have experienced. 00:10:29.720 --> 00:10:30.720 This longing. 00:10:31.700 --> 00:10:33.259 To see the prophecy revealed. 00:10:33.340 --> 00:10:34.539 To see this coming Messiah. 00:10:35.179 --> 00:10:36.759 To see this Emmanuel. 00:10:38.799 --> 00:10:40.279 100 years go by and you think, 00:10:40.759 --> 00:10:42.379 well, maybe God's just been busy. 00:10:42.480 --> 00:10:43.919 Maybe he's just been off doing something else. 00:10:43.919 --> 00:10:44.659 Maybe he's just been off doing something else. 00:10:44.659 --> 00:10:47.179 Handling some other galaxy or whatever happens to be. 00:10:47.240 --> 00:10:50.979 After 200 years, they're wondering if God's ever going to come. 00:10:51.799 --> 00:10:55.000 And at 300 years, you've got to know the people of God are starting to lose hope 00:10:55.000 --> 00:10:57.559 that it's ever going to happen. 00:11:00.179 --> 00:11:03.279 This, by the way, is why we celebrate Advent. 00:11:04.740 --> 00:11:07.639 We celebrate Advent because of this time of longing 00:11:07.639 --> 00:11:12.120 and hoping and waiting for the advent of Christ. 00:11:13.919 --> 00:11:18.139 We spend four weeks in our services here at Christ's family 00:11:18.139 --> 00:11:19.799 or in other traditions. 00:11:20.299 --> 00:11:25.039 Four weeks awaiting and preparing to celebrate this time in our year. 00:11:27.139 --> 00:11:31.360 These people spent 700 years from the time that this prophecy was told 00:11:31.360 --> 00:11:32.559 until he was born. 00:11:32.699 --> 00:11:33.639 700 years. 00:11:34.599 --> 00:11:38.240 I want you to imagine with me the whole world weary. 00:11:39.240 --> 00:11:41.579 Weary from dealing with their sin. 00:11:41.580 --> 00:11:46.980 Weary from figuring out and struggling how to get through this redemption. 00:11:47.720 --> 00:11:53.759 Longing and hoping and awaiting this long-expected Savior. 00:11:55.379 --> 00:11:57.400 And imagine with me as we read this story, 00:11:58.259 --> 00:12:02.600 the thrill of hope as one by one people begin to realize 00:12:02.600 --> 00:12:05.720 that God is not only fulfilling prophecy here, 00:12:06.100 --> 00:12:08.400 that he's fulfilling every single prophecy 00:12:08.399 --> 00:12:10.779 through the person of Jesus Christ. 00:12:12.319 --> 00:12:14.860 So Luke 1 verse 26 says this. 00:12:16.120 --> 00:12:18.419 In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel... 00:12:19.419 --> 00:12:20.799 I don't want to stop too soon, 00:12:20.980 --> 00:12:22.559 but we've got to stop and talk about Gabriel. 00:12:23.659 --> 00:12:24.919 Because Gabriel is kind of a big deal. 00:12:25.779 --> 00:12:27.799 Gabriel is up there in terms of angels. 00:12:27.939 --> 00:12:29.860 He is a leader among angels. 00:12:30.079 --> 00:12:31.779 Scripture refers to him as an archangel. 00:12:32.159 --> 00:12:35.179 So he is kind of a big deal as far as angels go. 00:12:35.179 --> 00:12:36.879 And so when God picked Gabriel, 00:12:36.959 --> 00:12:39.199 we already know that this is a pretty important mission 00:12:39.199 --> 00:12:40.139 because God said, 00:12:40.679 --> 00:12:42.739 this mission, not just anybody will do, 00:12:42.839 --> 00:12:44.819 I'm going to send Gabriel to do it. 00:12:46.359 --> 00:12:50.339 And so Gabriel was sent from God to the city of Galilee named Nazareth 00:12:50.339 --> 00:12:53.259 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph 00:12:53.259 --> 00:12:54.959 of the house of David. 00:12:56.039 --> 00:12:57.579 And the virgin's name was Mary. 00:12:57.699 --> 00:12:59.079 Then it says in verse 28, 00:12:59.080 --> 00:13:05.379 You'll notice that there's no gap between God telling Gabriel to go 00:13:05.379 --> 00:13:06.980 and Gabriel being there. 00:13:07.100 --> 00:13:10.300 God says, go, and boom, Gabriel's there. 00:13:11.240 --> 00:13:13.280 Wouldn't it be nice to kind of be in the spiritual realm 00:13:13.280 --> 00:13:15.879 where God tells you to go do something, 00:13:15.980 --> 00:13:18.620 God tells you to go to Afghanistan or somewhere in the Middle East 00:13:18.620 --> 00:13:19.879 to share with a people group, 00:13:19.940 --> 00:13:20.820 and you can just be there. 00:13:20.879 --> 00:13:21.700 You don't have to pack your bags, 00:13:21.759 --> 00:13:22.540 you don't have to get on the airplane. 00:13:22.680 --> 00:13:25.280 What a wonderful thing it would be to be able to do that. 00:13:25.400 --> 00:13:26.560 Gabriel doesn't have to do that. 00:13:26.559 not realize the significance of the passage. 00:13:52.619 --> 00:13:54.259 And this is one of those passages. 00:13:54.259 --> 00:13:57.620 It's real easy for us to think, oh, well, he's just greeting Mary, right? 00:13:57.939 --> 00:13:58.919 Greetings, O favored one. 00:13:59.179 --> 00:14:00.259 The Lord is with you. 00:14:00.559 --> 00:14:03.319 It's easy just to read over that and not recognize the significance. 00:14:03.519 --> 00:14:05.659 But if you know anything about angels, 00:14:06.259 --> 00:14:10.419 you know that this is highly unusual behavior for angels 00:14:10.419 --> 00:14:15.019 to say this as the first sentence that they said to a person. 00:14:15.679 --> 00:14:19.200 Angels don't normally say, greetings, O favored one. 00:14:19.200 --> 00:14:26.220 The first thing angels typically say is, do not be afraid or fear not. 00:14:26.840 --> 00:14:28.160 Pretty much the same statement, right? 00:14:28.400 --> 00:14:30.620 Do not be afraid or something to that effect. 00:14:31.980 --> 00:14:34.000 In fact, every other recorded time in Scripture, 00:14:34.420 --> 00:14:36.160 when an angel appears before a human, 00:14:37.240 --> 00:14:39.560 they say, do not be afraid or fear not. 00:14:40.340 --> 00:14:42.060 This is the only recorded exception, 00:14:42.059 --> 00:14:48.239 which begs the question, why would Gabriel respond to Mary in this way? 00:14:48.339 --> 00:14:49.779 Why would he greet her differently? 00:14:51.000 --> 00:14:52.119 We don't know for sure, 00:14:53.119 --> 00:14:57.039 but we do know that Gabriel probably had some knowledge of the prophecies, right? 00:14:57.099 --> 00:14:57.919 That's access. 00:14:58.319 --> 00:15:00.419 We have access to the prophecies, 00:15:00.479 --> 00:15:03.979 so we have to understand that most likely angels have access 00:15:03.979 --> 00:15:06.599 to the same prophecies that we do. 00:15:06.600 --> 00:15:11.019 And so we can safely assume that the angels have some knowledge 00:15:11.019 --> 00:15:14.500 of what God is planning to do through the prophecies, 00:15:14.560 --> 00:15:15.139 at the very least. 00:15:15.279 --> 00:15:17.180 Angels are not omniscient like God. 00:15:39.080 but I think it's possible that his angelic drawl hit the floor 00:15:39.080 --> 00:15:41.019 when he heard what he was supposed to do. 00:15:44.019 --> 00:15:45.620 And boom, he's there. 00:15:46.019 --> 00:15:47.519 And the first words out of his mouth, 00:15:47.580 --> 00:15:49.660 it's almost as if he couldn't help but to say them, 00:15:49.960 --> 00:15:50.060 is, 00:15:50.540 --> requiring Mary and Joseph to make their 100 mile journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem. 00:23:39.599 --> 00:23:44.279 And it's amazing to me how everything works together in this story. 00:23:45.559 --> 00:23:51.559 So the prophecy will be fulfilled as it was foretold 700 years prior to his coming. 00:23:52.339 --> 00:23:58.519 And what makes this even more amazing is that all of this happens during 00:24:05.980 People can travel widely without a lot of fear and without barriers. 00:24:05.980 --> 00:24:10.759 And so Jesus is born at a time when news of him can spread like wildfire, 00:24:11.000 the Christmas story as being just that. 00:24:50.560 --> 00:24:52.180 We think of it as just a story. 00:24:52.740 --> 00:24:56.700 And what's more is that we so often think of God as a distant God, 00:24:57.040 --> 00:24:57.640 unrelational, 00:24:57.880 --> 00:24:59.140 unable to relate to us. 00:24:59.140 --> 00:25:01.759 And to every other religion, 00:25:01.980 --> 00:25:04.880 their concept of God is just that, 00:25:05.100 --> 00:25:05.780 unrelational, 00:25:06.000 --> 00:25:07.880 unable to understand what it means to breathe, 00:25:08.259 --> 00:25:10.800 unable to be overwhelmed with emotion, 00:25:11.400 --> 00:25:12.880 what it means to feel pain. 00:25:12.940 --> 00:25:15.700 But the historical story of Jesus Christ 00:25:15.700 --> 00:25:20.860 demonstrates that that is not the case with our God, 00:25:21.280 --> 00:25:23.160 with the one true and holy God. 00:25:23.160 --> 00:25:27.820 We have a God who wants to get involved with our lives. 00:25:29.019 --> 00:30:33.180 is I like to ask people 00:30:33.180 --> 00:30:35.859 if they know what the word prodigal means. 00:30:36.980 --> 00:30:38.660 Because a lot of times, 00:30:38.740 --> 00:30:39.480 and more often than not, 00:30:39.519 --> 00:30:41.379 the answer that I get for what prodigal, 00:30:41.720 --> 00:30:44.139 what the definition of prodigal probably means 00:30:44.139 --> 00:30:46.980 is wayward or sinful, 00:30:47.500 --> 00:30:48.559 something to that effect. 00:30:49.000 --> 00:30:50.700 That's not what the word prodigal means, however. 00:30:50.700 --> 00:30:54.559 The word prodigal actually means lavish. 00:30:55.359 --> 00:30:56.299 It means lavish. 00:30:56.299 --> 00:30:59.419 And so when we understand the proper definition 00:30:59.419 --> 00:31:00.519 of the word
