the title of The Obedience of Hope. 00:02:28.280 --> 00:02:31.860 And I say the obedience of hope and not the hope of obedience. 00:02:31.860 --> 00:02:38.020 Order matters in our text this morning. 00:02:38.540 --> 00:02:43.940 We've looked at the hope that we have in Christ Jesus, how it's an unshakable hope. 00:02:44.340 --> 00:02:50.460 And it is rooted in the resurrection, the revelation and the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:02:50.460 --> 00:03:03.140 But in our text today, it's not so much talking about the hope we have, but the things we ought to do, the obedience we have to, that it's expected of us, of God's children. 00:03:03.840 --> 00:03:11.920 And it's critical that we talk of the obedience as the obedience of hope and not the hope of obedience. 00:03:13.319 --> 00:03:14.219 What do I mean? 00:03:14.219 --> 00:03:22.740 A good rule of thumb in biblical interpretation is that the indicatives of God always precede the imperatives of God. 00:03:22.900 --> 00:03:37.520 The things that are in scripture that tell us of who God is and what he does or what he gives, it always then feeds into or speaks to how we then respond to God. 00:03:38.039 --> 00:03:42.280 So the indicatives always precede the imperatives. 00:03:42.280 --> 00:03:45.319 The imperatives always rely upon the indicatives. 00:03:46.159 --> 00:03:51.460 It's a very important rule of thumb in biblical interpretations, very basic but very profound. 00:03:52.240 --> 00:03:57.780 We think about God initiating salvation and then we respond to salvation. 00:03:58.400 --> secure, that deep meaning and blessing are ours, that obedience becomes not something that we do in order to curry the favor of God, 00:05:09.960 --> 00:05:14.460 but rather it becomes now an expression of praise that we give to him. 00:05:14.459 --> 00:05:17.879 It is a way to say thank you to God. 00:05:18.279 --> 00:05:29.379 It's a way to acknowledge his goodness in our lives that he has gone the distance for us and then we respond to him as thankful children. 00:05:29.379 --> 00:05:49.219 With this in mind, Peter calls the church to live as holy people, not telling us that it will result in our sonship or our ransoming or our unshakable hope in the resurrection, in the salvation to come, 00:05:49.639 --> 00:05:54.240 but rather as people that are transformed first by God. 00:05:55.060 --> 00:05:58.959 We are to be holy because he has saved us. 00:05:59.379 --> 00:06:15.120 And Peter's going to help us to understand this by looking at how we are holy, made holy by God, as we have a relationship with him as a child, as a relationship to a father, 00:06:15.819 --> 00:06:21.980 as people who have been ransomed, and how we have become spiritually newborn in Christ. us, in light of what Christ has done, not to be idle. 00:07:07.579 --> 00:07:23.680 Because the salvation, although we experience it now, Peter is talking about the salvation to come, the return of future hope that, Peter says, informs our present actions. 00:07:39.720 --> 00:07:47.760 But he warns the church here, and us this morning, not just against idleness, but also against delusion. --> 00:08:06.040 And really, it is Peter telling us to not lose sight of our true home, our citizenship, which is in heaven. 00:08:06.040 --> 00:08:17.160 And remember, Peter is speaking to the church prize. 00:09:50.179 --> 00:09:56.259 And as such, isn't getting influenced or trained by what our society tells us is good. 00:09:56.259 --> 00:10:07.259 And this is the big rub for us because our society isn't neutral in any kind of way, in the same way that Rome society wasn't neutral in the first century. 00:10:07.960 --> 00:10:12.960 Our society actively trains us in things that it values. 00:10:13.379 --> 00:10:17.200 It trains us in the type of citizen we ought to be. 00:10:17.659 --> 00:10:23.539 Rome trained her subjects, her citizens, to live for the empire as if it were eternal. our hope in things to accumulate for the sake of accumulation, of enjoyment. 00:11:01.199 --> 00:11:05.899 Things that ought to be tools to help us live a good life. 00:11:06.120 --> 00:11:11.599 Or common good. 00:11:32.820 --> 00:11:39.820 But become the very thing that we can puff out our chests because we continue to climb the ladders. 00:11:39.820 --> 00:11:41.040 Or we are recognized. And yet, as Pope John Paul coined it almost 30 years ago, it has led to a culture of death. 00:12:01.740 --> 00:12:11.820 Therefore, as those who have a living and unshakable hope, Peter reminds us,
