So we'll be in this for the next few weeks. And it needs to be said, Romans 8 is one of just the most glorious chapters of the Bible. 00:00:20.519 --> 00:00:27.080 When I was in seminary, we had to read through the whole Bible just over the span of a few terms. So you had to read it pretty quickly. 00:00:27.079 --> 00:00:36.259 But Romans 8 would just stop you in your tracks, as you read. One of the great preachers, Martin Lloyd-Jones, he said, 00:00:36.439 --> 00:00:46.239 If the Bible was like a pile of gems, the book of Romans would be the brightest cluster, and chapter 8 is the brightest gem in the cluster. 00:00:48.039 --> 00:00:52.640 Throughout the generations, this chapter is just so well-loved and so well-known, isn't it? 00:00:52.640 --> 00:00:58.579 And it's almost like one of those films where you could just quote every line, and every line is a masterpiece. 00:00:58.939 --> 00:01:03.500 It's like watching Lord of the Rings. You'll probably recognize some of them. Just look at verse 1. 00:01:04.739 --> 00:01:09.539 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 00:01:10.400 --> 00:01:11.219 Verse 15. 00:01:11.219 --> 00:01:16.700 Verse 28. 00:01:17.579 --> 00:01:23.120 Verse 35. 00:01:23.120 --> 00:01:27.359 Verse 37. 00:01:27.359 --> 00:01:33.640 It's such a bright gem, isn't it? 00:01:34.680 --> 00:01:38.299 But why does this gem shine so bright? 00:01:38.299 --> 00:01:47.679 Well, I think it is so glorious because in the Christian life, we can so easily feel weak and vulnerable, 00:01:48.140 --> 00:01:52.079 and we can wonder, what is God doing in my life right now? 00:01:52.799 --> 00:01:55.539 We can feel like this is all just too much. 00:01:56.159 --> 00:01:57.679 How can I face tomorrow? 00:01:58.140 --> 00:02:01.719 And all this can just seem insignificant and hopeless. 00:02:01.719 --> 00:02:06.420 And we often wonder, is this Christian life all really worth it? 00:02:07.500 --> 00:02:09.840 That is so often our experience. 00:02:10.599 --> 00:02:15.000 But against that bleakness, Romans 8 is this shining gem, 00:02:15.680 --> 00:02:23.759 just showing us this detailed and vibrant picture of the powerful work God is doing in our life. 00:02:23.759 --> 00:02:32.159 In contrast to our weakness and our doubts, Romans 8 just has this triumphant note throughout. 00:02:33.039 --> 00:02:40.819 It is all about the power and life and joy and security and victory of the Christian life. 00:02:41.819 --> 00:02:43.459 So just think of those quotes again. 00:02:43.460 --> 00:02:44.460 No condemnation. 00:02:44.460 --> 00:02:45.060 No condemnation. 00:02:45.780 --> 00:02:47.099 Full adoption. 00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:49.500 Loved by God. 00:02:49.620 --> 00:02:52.040 Never ever being separated from Christ. 00:02:52.620 --> 00:02:53.980 More than conquerors. 00:02:55.680 --> 00:03:02.700 And so this chapter is rightly to be treasured because it speaks into our weakness and our worries, 00:03:02.860 --> 00:03:06.260 and it says God is triumphant in your life. 00:03:06.259 --> 00:03:13.479 And you may not see it, but beneath the surface, he is doing something far greater than we may realize. 00:03:14.579 --> 00:03:20.659 And it all comes down to his spirit in your life. 00:03:21.719 --> 00:03:26.620 The Holy Spirit is key to understanding this chapter. 00:03:26.620 --> 00:03:34.520 In Romans 8, Paul is opening our eyes to see this glorious picture of what God, 00:03:34.879 --> 00:03:43.180 but in particular, what the spirit of God is doing in this world and in the church and in our lives every single day. 00:03:44.319 --> 00:03:49.460 And he wants us to see the spirit's work, it is bigger than you might realize. 00:03:50.180 --> 00:03:53.240 And it is a work deeper than we can see. 00:03:53.240 --> 00:04:00.000 So you might be here today wondering, why bother with all this Christianity stuff? 00:04:00.860 --> 00:04:05.600 From the outside, this all may just seem weak and fragile and insignificant. 00:04:05.920 --> 00:04:11.719 Well, under the surface, there is something triumphant and indestructible going on. 00:04:12.719 --> 00:04:14.900 The divine spirit is at work. 00:04:16.400 --> 00:04:21.259 That shine of the gem, that is the spirit shining. 00:04:21.259 --> 00:04:25.579 And so I just want us to jump into these first 11 verses. 00:04:25.779 --> 00:04:31.120 And straight away, we see something glorious about the spirit's work in our life. 00:04:31.240 --> 00:04:35.039 We see the spirit sets us free. 00:04:35.560 --> 00:04:37.139 The spirit sets us free. 00:04:38.339 --> 00:04:40.599 This opens on amazing words, doesn't it? 00:04:41.259 --> 00:04:44.339 It's those words that we cling to in the darkest of days. 00:04:44.339 --> 00:04:44.899 Verse 1. 00:04:45.719 --> 00:04:51.379 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 00:04:53.139 --> 00:04:55.139 Now the word therefore, do you see that? 00:04:55.539 --> 00:05:00.039 It's referring back to all that Paul has said, basically from chapter 5 onwards. 00:05:01.339 --> 00:05:02.479 Everything about Christ. 00:05:02.480 --> 00:05:10.740 Since Christ has come down and shed his blood and died and been buried and raised and you are united with him. 00:05:11.400 --> 00:05:15.140 Therefore, there is now no condemnation. 00:05:16.740 --> 00:05:22.580 And he's opening up the reality of the Christian life with that word, now. 00:05:22.579 --> 00:05:31.199 For those in Christ right here, right now, there is no condemnation from God in your life. 00:05:32.680 --> 00:05:37.699 And then, Paul gives a specific reason why this is the case. 00:05:38.439 --> 00:05:40.279 Why is there no condemnation? 00:05:41.079 --> 00:05:41.560 Verse 2. 00:05:41.560 --> 00:05:58.899 There is no condemnation because the spirit has set you free. 00:06:00.480 --> 00:06:06.500 And if you just stop and think about that for a second, that should surprise us. 00:06:06.500 --> 00:06:15.120 Because we might expect to hear there is no condemnation because Christ has died and taken away your sin. 00:06:15.759 --> 00:06:20.000 Or there's no condemnation because Christ has paid the debt of your sin. 00:06:20.759 --> 00:06:24.519 We would expect the reason to be outside of ourselves. 00:06:25.339 --> 00:06:29.100 Because Christ has done something for us out there. 00:06:29.100 --> 00:06:37.379 But instead, it says, there is no condemnation because God has done something in you. 00:06:38.320 --> 00:06:41.400 The spirit has set you free. 00:06:43.260 --> 00:06:49.200 And Paul gives this reason because he means something specific by no condemnation. 00:06:50.020 --> 00:06:54.500 He's not talking about the guilt of sin, although it's related to the guilt of sin. 00:06:54.500 --> 00:07:00.000 But specifically, he's talking about the power of sin. 00:07:01.060 --> 00:07:05.540 So it's like when you commit a crime and you're sentenced by a judge. 00:07:06.079 --> 00:07:07.600 There are two things that happen to you. 00:07:08.360 --> 00:07:09.920 Firstly, you're found guilty. 00:07:10.699 --> 00:07:13.220 You have the verdict and status of guilty. 00:07:14.220 --> 00:07:20.800 But also, you then face the prison sentence that arises from that guilty verdict. 00:07:21.500 --> 00:07:24.120 You are then condemned to prison. 00:07:24.500 --> 00:07:26.939 Well, that is just like sin. 00:07:28.120 --> 00:07:31.360 Sin involves guilt and imprisonment. 00:07:32.420 --> 00:07:38.300 Sin makes us guilty before God and it also captures us. 00:07:40.220 --> 00:07:46.819 Sin is a real power over our hearts and lives and desires. 00:07:47.279 --> 00:07:50.540 And it enslaves and rules us. 00:07:50.540 --> 00:07:52.920 Sin is a real power over our hearts and rules us. 00:07:52.920 --> 00:07:57.600 And so ever since the fall, the iron bars went up around humanity. 00:07:57.600 --> 00:08:03.500 the cage of sin surrounded us, and we were condemned to this prison sentence. 00:08:04.780 --> 00:08:10.640 And that's what Paul is talking about here. There is now no condemnation for the Christian, 00:08:10.840 --> 00:08:15.660 no prison sentence, because God has burst open the prison cells. 00:08:16.960 --> 00:08:23.000 The Christian life is a life free from sin's power ruling over your heart. 00:08:23.000 --> 00:08:31.459 And how did God do that? Verse 2, the law of the spirit of life has set you free. 00:08:33.360 --> 00:08:37.179 And this is how we can understand what he means by law here. 00:08:38.059 --> 00:08:41.039 So he's not talking captures this. 00:09:04.960 --> 00:09:09.360 He says, it's like the laws, the principles at work when a plane flies. 00:09:09.360 --> 00:09:16.159 So when a plane cruises at 33,000 feet, the law of gravity hasn't disappeared, 00:09:16.980 --> 00:09:23.800 but the law of aerodynamics is now at work causing that plane to take off and to fly. 00:09:25.000 --> 00:09:31.800 The law, the power of aerodynamics has overcome the law, the power of gravity, 00:09:32.480 --> 00:09:34.940 and set the plane free to fly. 00:09:34.940 --> 00:09:38.200 Well, that is the Christian life. 00:09:39.460 --> 00:09:43.160 We were held down by sin, trapped and caged, 00:09:43.260 --> 00:09:47.340 but Christ sent his spirit into our life and set us free. 00:09:48.620 --> 00:09:53.440 Now, sin hasn't gravitational pull, keeping our hearts and our minds down to the ground and away from God, 00:10:31.559 --> 00:10:38.699 sin pulling toward more sin, disobedience, a life revolving around ourselves, the spirit ruling our lives to take us in the opposite direction. 00:10:53.460 --> 00:10:55.360 Verse 4, it's righteousness. 00:10:56.720 --> 00:10:59.919 A life fulfilling the law, doing the law, 00:11:18.980 Driving full speed away from God, into ditches, crashing the car, heading toward death. 00:11:19.720 --> 00:11:24.899 But in Christ, the spirit comes into the car, takes over the driving seat, 00:11:25.100 --> 00:11:32.580 throws sin out of the driving seat, takes over your heart and turns it 180 toward God. 00:11:33.500 --> 00:11:43.059 And so Christian, that obedience that you have, insignificant, 00:12:40.519 --> 00:12:45.579 but in reality, that is all spirit-given freedom. 00:12:45.580 --> 00:12:51.220 That is the iron bars destroyed in your life. 00:12:51.360 --> 00:12:52.540 No condemnation. 00:12:54.580 --> 00:12:59.560 And so Paul is giving a very black and white picture of the world here. 00:12:59.559 --> 00:13:04.099 And he's saying that there are two ways to exist in
