And he has something to say to people who would not consider themselves 00:00:35.240 --> 00:00:39.520 Christians, people who have doubts and questions and objections to Christianity. 00:00:40.600 --> 00:00:45.780 We're continuing together our study in the Gospel of Mark. And you'll remember that the Gospels tell 00:00:45.780 --> 00:00:51.420 the story of Jesus in his life and his death and his resurrection. And as we study these together, 00:00:51.420 --> 00:00:58.539 we're asking two questions. First, who is Jesus? And how do we respond to him? We just ended last 00:00:58.539 --> 00:01:04.379 week a series of five different conflicts that Jesus had with the religious leaders. We most recently 00:01:04.379 --> 00:01:09.760 looked at following Jesus in the Sabbath, and we looked at the principle that one man has given, 00:01:09.840 --> 00:01:16.460 that the law reflects the heart or the values of the lawgiver. And so the Sabbath reflects God's desire 00:01:16.459 --> 00:01:22.579 to protect life. And it's meant to be a day of life. This morning, we're returning back to the 00:01:22.579 --> 00:01:28.000 theme that we've seen before in the Gospel of Mark, which is Jesus' call on people. And so we're asking 00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:36.159 these questions, what is the nature of Jesus' call? What does it look like for us if we're called by Jesus? 00:01:36.979 --> 00:01:43.299 How does that play out for us in our daily lives? weekend with my grandmother who lived down in North Carolina. 00:04:44.319 --> 00:04:47.959 And that weekend, I learned a new word that I had never heard before. 00:04:48.620 --> 00:04:50.839 I learned about the paparazzi. 00:04:50.839 --> 00:04:54.099 And I never heard this word before. 00:04:54.159 --> 00:04:56.119 I don't hear it very often anymore. 00:04:56.500 --> 00:05:04.759 But if you're familiar, you know it refers to photographers whose job it is to capture these pictures of celebrities, 00:05:04.899 --> 00:05:06.019 typically against their will. 00:05:06.739 --> 00:05:11.079 Now, if you were around and conscious in 1997, you know exactly where I'm headed. 00:05:11.219 --> 00:05:14.739 That Sunday of Labor Day was when Princess Diana died. 00:05:14.740 --> 00:05:17.960 She was being chased by the paparazzi. 00:05:18.139 --> 00:05:19.199 She was fleeing from them. 00:05:20.120 --> 00:05:24.480 She had almost 30 photographers waiting for her outside of the Ritz Paris Hotel. 00:05:25.160 --> 00:05:29.939 And so what we learned from the news is that she'd been playing this game of cat and mouse with them. 00:05:30.300 --> 00:05:33.319 And she'd found a side exit, a back exit to go out from. 00:05:33.620 --> 00:05:39.019 They had a decoy car to try to pull these photographers away so that she could sneak away. 00:05:39.019 --> 00:05:45.740 But her life was one of where she couldn't go anywhere, even when she was on a yacht thinking that she was in privacy. 00:05:45.859 --> 00:05:49.479 There would be people with telescopes looking in, trying to catch photographs of her. 00:05:50.659 --> 00:05:55.139 And so I think for a while after that, my brothers and I, of course, we processed things. 00:05:55.419 --> 00:05:58.139 I turned eight that summer, right before that happened. 00:05:58.560 --> 00:06:00.359 So we processed things through our stuffed animals. 00:06:00.560 --> 00:06:03.579 And I think for a while, they had trouble with the paparazzi as well. 00:06:04.299 --> 00:06:06.139 They were being chased by photographers. 00:06:06.139 --> 00:06:11.539 But I bring this all up because Jesus here is in a similar situation. 00:06:11.699 --> 00:06:14.919 He is not being chased by people looking for expensive photographs. 00:06:15.199 --> 00:06:19.300 He is being chased by people who are looking for priceless healing. 00:06:19.439 --> 00:06:20.879 You'll look with me in verse 10. 00:06:21.399 --> 00:06:26.419 We're told he had healed so many that all who had diseases pressed around him to touch him. 00:06:27.279 --> 00:06:30.399 Now, Diana had no privacy, not even in her private yacht. 00:06:30.479 --> 00:06:32.279 We see the same thing for Jesus as well. 00:06:32.279 --> 00:06:36.779 Verse 7, he withdrew with his disciples to the sea, and a great crowd followed. 00:06:36.859 --> 00:06:42.759 And we have this long list of locations to let us know they are coming after Jesus from everywhere. 00:06:43.819 --> 00:06:45.819 Diana had a getaway car ready. 00:06:46.699 --> 00:06:49.459 Jesus has his getaway boat that's been set up. 00:06:49.899 --> 00:06:55.479 Verse 9, and he told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd. 00:06:56.019 --> 00:06:58.500 In other words, things are getting dangerous for Jesus. 00:06:58.500 --> 00:07:04.980 And if you think it's some sort of exaggeration for me to compare him to Princess Diana running away from the paparazzi, 00:07:05.079 --> 00:07:07.439 I want you to remember verse 9 and verse 10. 00:07:07.879 --> 00:07:12.279 Verse 9 tells us he needed the boat lest they crush him. 00:07:14.139 --> 00:07:17.220 Jesus here, it seems, is in a life and death situation. 00:07:17.420 --> 00:07:22.139 There is a possibility that he could be trampled by all these people who are coming to him. 00:07:22.139 --> 00:07:29.279 As his fame spreads around the region of Capernaum, they know this is the place where they can come for healing and miracles. 00:07:30.539 --> 00:07:33.899 Everyone, in other words, wants a piece of Jesus. 00:07:34.939 --> 00:07:38.500 And so the point is this, that Jesus' fame is growing and growing. 00:07:38.680 --> 00:07:41.639 He is becoming greater and greater in this area, 00:07:41.719 --> 00:07:46.199 and so that the pressures of ministry are becoming more and more on him. 00:07:46.259 --> 00:07:48.699 It used to be not as many people knew about Jesus. 00:07:48.699 --> 00:07:53.079 Look back, remember, to the days when it was just people outside his house in Capernaum. 00:07:54.339 --> 00:07:55.899 Maybe we would trade this for that. 00:07:55.959 --> 00:07:57.199 Now, it seemed great at the time. 00:07:57.279 --> 00:07:58.639 Now things are getting so bad. 00:07:58.719 --> 00:08:04.599 Jesus has to have a getaway boat set up so that he can escape before he is trampled. 00:08:05.620 --> 00:08:08.959 And so we see here a glimpse of Jesus' humanity. 00:08:09.219 --> 00:08:12.019 Yes, he is God, and he is still human. 00:08:12.219 --> 00:08:13.899 Jesus is not Superman. 00:08:14.539 --> 00:08:16.060 He still needs to sleep. 00:08:16.060 --> 00:08:19.100 Jesus still needs to eat. 00:08:19.860 --> 00:08:22.220 Jesus can't do ministry all by himself. 00:08:22.360 --> 00:08:26.000 Jesus actually can't be in two places at the same time. 00:08:26.860 --> 00:08:30.959 There is a limit to how much healing that he can actually do. 00:08:31.079 --> 00:08:34.700 And so Jesus, in his humanity, needs help. 00:08:34.740 --> 00:08:38.679 And it's with that context that we come here to verse 13, 00:08:39.039 --> 00:08:43.379 where Jesus goes up on a mountain and calls the disciples and names the apostles. 00:08:43.379 --> 00:08:47.840 It's no surprise for us that as Jesus' popularity grows, 00:08:47.919 --> 00:08:51.340 as the pressures of ministry become more and more intense, 00:08:51.460 --> 00:08:55.220 that it's at this moment that he surrounds himself with the help that he needs. 00:08:55.379 --> 00:08:59.000 We see here in Mark the beginning of a new section to the book, 00:08:59.220 --> 00:09:05.059 a section where he has these 12 apostles who are with him in this part of the gospel. 00:09:05.059 --> 00:09:09.159 In other words, as Jesus' needs increase and increases, 00:09:09.159 --> 00:09:12.839 as the pressure grows, as his fame becomes greater and greater, 00:09:12.919 --> 00:09:15.379 it's at this moment that Jesus chooses his disciples. 00:09:15.559 --> 00:09:18.819 He brings men around him who can help. 00:09:19.959 --> 00:09:23.219 He surrounds himself with the help that he needs. 00:09:24.099 --> 00:09:25.919 And so that's why we see in verse 13, 00:09:26.419 --> 00:09:30.339 he calls to him those he desired, and they came to him. 00:09:30.340 --> 00:09:35.440 And he seems here to finally be able to escape. 00:09:36.860 --> 00:09:38.120 And remember, our question is, 00:09:38.200 --> 00:09:40.940 what does it look like to be 00:10:04.079 And so we've seen this before, 00:10:04.220 --> 00:10:06.159 but verse 13 reminds us, 00:10:06.279 --> 00:10:09.980 which is that Jesus is the one in control and in charge. 00:10:11.439 --> 00:10:14.659 Jesus is the one who comes to call people to him. 00:10:14.960 --> 00:10:18.720 In other words, you, if you're a Christian, did not choose Jesus. 00:10:19.980 --> 00:10:21.079 Jesus 00:13:14.300 Verse 13, it sounds like he's just calling a large group of people. 00:13:14.299 --> 00:13:19.500 We get to narrow in on this passage, though, because we see not this just the general call. 00:13:19.579 --> 00:13:23.979 We also see a particular call in verse 14 when Jesus calls these apostles. 00:13:24.959 --> 00:13:29.099 These apostles give us a greater clarity about what Jesus' call looks like. 00:13:29.159 --> 00:13:34.639 This is a narrower group that Jesus chooses to be with him and to work most closely with him. 00:13:34.859 --> 00:13:36.759 And so that's why in verse 14 it says, 00:13:36.759 --> 00:13:41.799 He appointed the twelve so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach. 00:13:41.799 --> 00:13:47.699 Now, I've said this recently, but this thinks they're going to be great organizational leaders. 00:15:24.879 --> 00:15:28.199 In fact, we barely hear about some of these names throughout the Gospels. 00:15:29.659 --> 00:15:31.159 No, Jesus to Jesus, 00:15:39.240 --> 00:15:43.679 which is a way of saying that when Jesus and you come together, 00:15:43.679 --> 00:15:45.799 you are not a means to an end. 00:15:46.919 --> 00:15:51.439 You are not a means to an end. 00:15:51.559 --> 00:15:54.559 Jesus is interested in you for you. 00:15:56.620 --> 00:16:00.620 He calls the disciples first and foremost to be with him. 00:16:01.419 --> 00:16:04.219 He does the same for us. 00:16:05.839 --> 00:16:08.019 And if you still don't believe me, remember this. 00:16:08.539 --> 00:16:10.679 Jesus calls them in chapter 3. 00:16:11.759 --> 00:16:13.159 Now, he doesn't just call them to be with him. 00:16:13.159 --> 00:16:15.059 He does call them to preach and cast out demons. 00:16:15.059 --> 00:16:18.879 He does not send them to do that until chapter 6. 00:16:20.519 --> 00:16:22.359 Jesus calls them in chapter 3. 00:16:22.919 --> 00:16:25.199 He doesn't send them out until chapter 6. 00:16:28.199 --> 00:16:29.239 Remember the 00:16:55.620 Oh, and by the way, it's not just the religious leaders who are coming at him with opposition anymore. 00:16:55.720 --> 00:16:58.480 It's not just the crowds who are coming to trample him. 00:16:58.480 --> 00:17:05.039 We find out at the very end, verses 20 and 21, even his family doesn't understand his mission. 00:17:07.120 --> 00:17:16.259 In the midst of those pressures, Jesus does not come first for his apostles to do anything for him. 00:17:16.259 --> 00:17:25.359 In the midst of those pressures, Jesus does not give in to the temptation that he can instantly and quickly minister out of and because of a secure attachment with his heavenly father. 00:18:57.460 --> 00:19:02.799 That it was in the relationship and out of the relationship that anything else happened. 00:19:02.799 --> 00:19:10.339 The same is also true for us first and before anything else is our relationship with Jesus. 00:19:11.639 --> 00:19:17.779 First and before anything else, Jesus calls us --> 00:20:11.399 and he only has 12 people who are close to him, right? 00:20:11.899 --> 00:20:16.200 So we come again to that mysterious sort of confusing statement in the Gospel of John.
