above. 00:05:50.579 --> 00:05:54.579 And as a people, Lord, we become so forgetful. 00:05:54.579 --> 00:05:58.579 We forget of what we once were. 00:05:58.579 --> 00:06:01.579 We forget how little we once had, maybe. 00:06:01.579 --> 00:06:08.579 Even as a people in our own islands, Lord, we are being reminded in these days and in these weeks of a time in our own history, 00:06:08.579 --> 00:06:17.579 a time in our own history as a people, when many were forced to leave our islands and to depart to other lands. 00:06:17.579 --> 00:06:24.579 So we are reminded of that in this coming week, Lord, we recognize all the experiences that our people have come through, 00:06:24.579 --> 00:06:27.579 down through the generations. 00:06:27.579 --> 00:06:30.579 And how much, Lord, maybe we have forgotten of that. 00:06:30.579 --> 00:06:36.579 And how much even today that we experience because of the sacrifice of so many. 00:06:36.579 --> 00:06:45.579 But above all, Lord, you have provided for us, not just for the practical things, but for the spiritual things of our life. 00:06:45.579 --> 00:06:54.579 Our greatest need of all is to know that joy, that peace, that hope of eternal life in Christ Jesus, our Lord. 00:06:54.579 --> 00:07:01.579 And again, how forgetful we come, can become of all that's been done for us to purchase that. 00:07:01.579 --> 00:07:09.579 All that's been done for us to bring us to know the gospel and the hope that there is in there. 00:07:09.579 --> 00:07:16.579 The fact that you sent your son into this world, the fact that you gave him not just to come and live in this world, 00:07:16.579 --> 00:07:21.579 but to come and lay down his life for his people. 00:07:21.579 --> 00:07:28.579 The fact that you, as we have remembered in this past week too, the fact that Jesus died on the cross, 00:07:28.579 --> 00:07:32.579 but on the third day he rose again. 00:07:32.579 --> 00:07:40.579 We thank you, Lord, for that wonderful gift that you have given to us in the midst of the darkness of Calvary, 00:07:40.579 --> 00:07:48.839 in the midst of the grave, in the midst of all the sorrow and sadness that your people felt then, 00:07:48.839 --> 00:07:54.579 that the morning of the third day brought that great joy of the resurrection. 00:07:54.579 --> 00:08:02.579 And we thank you that in this life, no matter what comes, in this life, Lord, no matter what we experience, 00:08:02.579 --> 00:08:11.579 that to know Jesus Christ as our Lord and as our God gives us a security for today and a hope for the future as well. that are ours. 00:10:35.580 --> 00:10:41.580 We think of the fear and worry for our fishing communities and the marine community all around us just now, 00:10:41.580 --> 00:10:49.580 when so many proposals are being put forward that there are threats towards our communities at this time, 00:10:49.580 --> 00:10:51.580 very livelihoods maybe being lost. 00:10:51.580 --> 00:10:54.580 And we pray for wisdom in these things. 00:10:54.580 --> 00:10:59.580 We pray, Lord, your help towards families who are concerned and anxious about these things. 00:10:59.580 --> 00:11:05.580 We pray when people feel they have no voice that you would give us a voice in the midst of it all. 00:11:05.580 --> 00:11:10.580 Help us to speak with wisdom, but also, Lord, to bring these to you in prayer, 00:11:10.580 And you also see another phrase that repeats itself throughout the chapter we read, 00:25:51.420 --> 00:25:55.580 and also at the end of chapter 2 as well in verse 14. 00:25:56.060 --> 00:25:58.920 It speaks about being zealous for good works. 00:25:59.420 --> 00:26:05.140 And that's again a phrase repeated a few times throughout chapter 3 as well. 00:26:05.800 --> 00:26:08.360 So there's these two 00:27:24.700 --> 00:27:27.859 Maybe foods or products that are going to be life-changing. 00:27:28.819 --> 00:27:34.740 Always we see political promises coming through our doorsteps or onto our television screens. 00:27:34.740 --> 00:27:39.579 Trust in me and we will have a better future together. 00:27:40.359 --> 00:27:42.700 But how are these promises fulfilled? 00:27:42.920 --> 00:27:44.599 How can they be fulfilled? 00:27:44.839 --> 00:27:47.380 Have they been fulfilled in the past? 00:27:48.039 --> 00:27:50.200 Will they be fulfilled in the future? 00:27:50.920 --> Paul is giving to Titus 00:29:48.220 --> 00:29:50.920 and for the people then and for ourselves today? 00:29:51.559 --> 00:29:56.220 Well, it's this promise that is found in the mercy of God, writing this letter 00:30:59.819 --> 00:31:04.419 to encourage him to keep going and to keep sharing this message, 00:31:04.420 --> 00:31:08.340 it was still in the midst of a people who were turning against him, 00:31:08.400 --> 00:31:09.440 who weren't interested, 00:31:10.300 --> 00:31:17.160 who couldn't be convinced in many ways just by them hearing it for themselves. 00:31:17.300 --> 00:31:19.060 They needed more in many instances. 00:31:20.200 --> 00:31:22.259 But it's to have confidence. 00:31:23.039 --> 00:31:28.820 Even people are so absorbed in other things to be confident in He blinded our minds in the past. 00:39:39.440 --> 00:39:52.820 but the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared so we don't forget we don't forget 00:39:52.820 --> 00:40:01.820 what we once were unbelievers as Paul is saying here living for themselves that's all they can 00:40:01.820 --> 00:40:08.079 do because they know nothing else in your life and my life has there not been a pleasures all of these things can apply to us before we met Christ we lived in that 00:40:27.579 --> 00:40:37.059 way and so we never should never forget what we once were keeping in mind how we used to be will 00:40:37.059 --> 00:40:44.679 enable us to treat those around us who are strangers to grace to treat them with mercy to treat them with 00:40:44.679 --> 00:40:50.940 compassion to treat them with love because they are in the shoes that we once were they're in the 00:40:50.940 --> 00:41:01.219 very place that we once were but by the grace of God go I as someone once famously said and so we 00:41:01.219 --> 00:41:09.819 never forget what we once were that's what we want to hold on to if we are to be a people of good works 00:41:09.819 --> 00:41:17.539 we hold on to that you think of every aspect of life and leadership and authority over us it's when 00:41:17.539 --> 00:41:24.799 people forget what they once were what they once stood for what they once held important when they back on sin but we don't forget that that was the way we lived that 00:41:42.400 --> 00:41:52.960 that is the way we were so why is verse 3 so important for us here well because Paul himself 00:41:52.960 --> 00:42:02.820 includes himself here too he reminds us we ourselves were once foolish no one here tonight could say oh but 00:42:02.820 --> 00:42:12.800 that wasn't me I was never that foolish I was never that bad we were all fools we were all people who 00:42:12.800 --> 00:42:20.079 wandered away from God you know as you listen to the gospel of Isaiah 53 what does that tell us 00:42:20.079 --> 00:42:29.159 it tells us the enormity of what Christ had to come and do for us surely it says he has borne our griefs 00:42:29.159 --> 00:42:37.159 and carried our sorrows yet we did esteem him stricken smitten of God and afflicted but he was wounded 00:42:37.159 --> 00:42:44.019 for our transgressions he was bruised for our iniquities the chastisement of our peace was upon him 00:42:44.019 --> 00:42:52.079 and with his stripes we are healed then he says all we like sheep have gone astray we have turned everyone 00:42:52.079 --> 00:42:56.579 to his own way we've all done it we've all gone away 00:42:56.579 --> 00:43:09.219 but God has brought us back so we never forget what we once were in order to reach the lost we have to 00:43:09.219 --> 00:43:17.199 hold that in our minds constantly otherwise we will just judge we will look down on them but we 00:43:17.199 --> 00:43:25.379 remember that we ourselves were once foolish disobedient let us stray all of these things 00:43:25.379 --> 00:43:38.259 but then we remember now what we are what we are what changed us and what is able to change others that we 00:43:38.260 --> 00:43:47.580 are to be witnesses to around us well we come to a word there in verse 4 a word that we see often in 00:43:47.580 --> 00:43:54.160 scripture a small word that makes such a great difference and that's the word at the beginning 00:43:54.160 --> 00:44:06.020 of verse 4 but we were once foolish but then you come into verse 4 but when the goodness of loving 00:44:06.019 --> 00:44:17.900 kindness of god our savior appeared he saved us it's a wonderful word it's used as well in ephesians 00:44:17.900 --> 00:44:27.059 chapter 2 in that passage that speaks about the fact that we were dead in our trespasses and sins at the 00:44:27.059 --> 00:44:33.800 beginning of chapter 2 you were dead in your trespasses and sins in which you once walked following the 00:44:33.800 --> 00:44:40.780 course of course of this world again it's what we once were but then you come to verse 4 of ephesians 00:44:40.780 --> 00:44:52.680 chapter 2 and again it's this word that makes all the difference but god being rich in mercy but god but 00:44:52.680 --> 00:45:03.720 when the goodness and loving kindness of god our savior appeared he saved us why can we say 00:45:03.719 --> 00:45:13.819 that we are different now what has made the difference for us well we're reminded it's not what we have done 00:45:13.819 --> 00:45:23.879 not because of works done by us and righteousness it's not but god saw that i improved myself that i got
