--> 00:22:57.240 I'd like to try and cover the teaching of this chapter this evening, 00:22:58.240 --> 00:23:05.240 which we've entitled Lady Wisdom and Madam Folly. 00:23:05.240 --> 00:23:12.240 If you imagine tonight receiving an invitation to two wedding receptions, 00:23:12.240 --> 00:23:16.240 That were actually going to be held on the same day, 00:23:16.240 --> 00:23:18.240 On the same occasion. 00:23:18.240 --> 00:23:24.240 You might have a bit of difficulty juggling as to which of these you would actually choose to go to. 00:23:24.240 --> 00:23:28.240 And of course you'd be taking lots of things into consideration. 00:23:28.240 --> 00:23:31.240 You wouldn't want to offend either party, 00:23:31.240 --> 00:23:37.240 And you would want to actually try and make a choice on what you see are the best options. 00:23:37.240 --> 00:23:41.240 Well, if you look at this chapter tonight in some sort of way like that, 00:23:41.240 --> 00:23:47.240 Think of it as an invitation to two wedding receptions at the same time. 00:23:47.240 --> 00:23:53.240 You can see one has been from what we've called Lady Wisdom. 00:23:53.240 --> 00:23:57.240 Wisdom has built her house all the way through to verse 12. 00:23:57.240 --> 00:24:02.240 And the second one is from Madam Folly or Madam Foolishness, 00:24:02.240 --> 00:24:08.240 Who also sends out her invitation for you to reject Lady Wisdom's invitation, 00:24:08.240 --> 00:24:17.240 And to choose instead that you come to the reception that she, Madam Folly, has actually laid out for you. 00:24:17.240 --> 00:24:25.240 Now, of course, in the ordinary sense, it's not desperately important which of the wedding receptions you would choose ordinarily. 00:24:25.240 --> 00:24:31.240 But it is when you think of these two invitations in this chapter. 00:24:31.240 --> 00:24:40.240 Because one obviously leads to what is called here life, instruction, and all that's associated with that. 00:24:40.240 --> 00:24:48.240 The other really leads to death and ultimately to lostness. 00:24:48.240 --> 00:24:57.240 And wisdom in Proverbs is frequently mentioned, as you know, it's one of the chief topics with which the book of Proverbs deals. 00:24:57.240 --> 00:25:07.240 And wisdom in the book of Proverbs is not something just confined to someone that has natural insight. 00:25:07.240 --> 00:25:16.240 Wisdom is very much part of what it means to know God and to accept the ways of God as against any other way. 00:25:16.240 --> 00:25:26.240 You can see that really from verse 10 here, where wisdom begins, or you might even take it as the foundation of wisdom being the fear of the Lord. 00:25:26.240 --> 00:25:31.240 And we mentioned the fear of the Lord in a study some time ago, not very long ago, 00:25:31.240 --> 00:25:41.240 where we mentioned that, saw that the fear of the Lord has to do with the awe and the reverence and the love and the respect that we owe to God. 00:25:41.240 --> 00:25:48.240 And it used to be the case, though not so much nowadays, I'm sure, that those who followed the Lord, 00:25:48.240 --> 00:25:55.240 Christians who actually valued and respected and followed the ways of the Lord, would be known as God-fearing. 00:25:55.240 --> 00:26:00.240 God-fearing was a very honorable and still is a very honorable term. 00:26:00.240 --> 00:26:05.240 Although it's out of fashion and although it appears to the world to be very negative, 00:26:05.240 --> 00:26:09.240 something that you wouldn't want to be labeled with in the Bible, 00:26:09.240 --> 00:26:15.240 it's a huge, huge honor to be known as one of those who fears the Lord. 00:26:15.240 --> 00:26:26.240 Because God-fearing people are people who respect and follow the ways of the Lord through the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:26:26.240 --> 00:26:36.240 So Proverbs, as it deals with wisdom, it sets out wisdom and foolishness by way of personifying them as two women. 00:26:36.240 --> 00:26:45.240 Two women who are calling people as they pass by their respective homes, calling them to come and partake of their banquet. 00:26:45.240 --> 00:26:55.240 They have made a preparation, they've set up a banquet, and each wants people who are passing by to come and take of their banquet rather than the other one. 00:26:55.240 --> 00:27:13.240 And as we'll see tonight, the woman wisdom is a very elegant and beautiful woman, whereas the woman folly or foolishness is very ugly and has, is associated with, everything that's ugly in life. 00:27:13.240 --> 00:27:26.240 And it's a way in which the book of Proverbs, as one of the wisdom books in the Old Testament, Psalms and Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, these are lumped together as the wisdom books. 00:27:26.240 --> 00:27:30.240 Although wisdom runs through all of the books of the Bible, of course. 00:27:30.240 --> 00:27:40.240 But the wisdom books are particularly to do with teaching wisdom, teaching this fear of the Lord, teaching why it's important, teaching why, what it leads to, 00:27:40.240 --> 00:27:45.240 teaching various aspects of that fear of the Lord. 00:27:45.240 --> 00:27:58.240 And so here as we come to these two alternatives, you like, we have, as we say, the elegant woman, wisdom, and the ugly, dark woman, foolishness, folly, the opposite of wisdom. 00:27:58.240 --> 00:28:03.240 The alternative life to a life of obedience to God. 00:28:03.240 --> 00:28:08.240 And as you see that you can actually trace all of this right into the New Testament. 00:28:08.240 --> 00:28:18.240 Of course, it's pretty much the same, almost exactly, as Paul is saying when he wrote to the Corinthians, where he talks about Christ, the wisdom, and the power of God. 00:28:18.240 --> 00:28:25.240 And where you have the same competition between that which is against God and that which is on God's side. 00:28:25.240 --> 00:28:36.240 You remember how Paul there said the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are saved, being saved, it is the power of God. 00:28:36.240 --> 00:28:46.240 And as he went on through there, you remember, he said that the Greeks seek after wisdom, the Jews demand signs, and the Greeks seek for wisdom. 00:28:46.240 --> 00:28:53.240 But we preach Christ crucified, stumbling block to Jews, and foolishness to Gentiles. 00:28:53.240 --> 00:28:59.240 But to those who are called both Jews and Greeks, that's an important emphasis. 00:28:59.240 --> 00:29:06.240 He says, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. 00:29:06.240 --> 00:29:10.240 Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. 00:29:10.240 --> 00:29:13.240 Where do you see the wisdom of God? 00:29:13.240 --> 00:29:17.240 Where do you see the things that this lady wisdom sets out in Proverbs 9? 00:29:17.240 --> 00:29:19.240 Where do you see them most clearly of all? 00:29:19.240 --> 00:29:22.240 You see them in God in Christ. 00:29:22.240 --> 00:29:27.240 You see them in the person of Jesus, in the work of Jesus, in the death and resurrection of Jesus, 00:29:27.240 --> 00:29:37.240 and everything that you find in the New Testament and in the Gospel emphasis that here is the Saviour, here is the wisdom of which the book of Proverbs so frequently spoke. 00:29:37.240 --> 00:29:42.240 Wisdom of salvation, the wisdom of knowing God. 00:29:42.240 --> 00:29:45.240 So let's look at these two invitations. 00:29:45.240 --> 00:29:50.240 First of all, Lady Wisdom's reception, verses 1 to 6. 00:29:50.240 --> 00:29:55.240 And then you'll find what's on the menu and the invitations themselves. 00:29:55.240 --> 00:30:02.240 Wisdom has built her house, she has hewn her seven pillars, she has slaughtered her beasts, she has mixed her wine, 00:30:02.240 --> 00:30:07.240 she has set out her tables, she has sent out her young women to call from the highest places in the town. 00:30:07.240 --> 00:30:11.240 Whoever is simple, let him turn in here to him who lacks sense. 00:30:11.240 --> 00:30:15.240 She says, come and eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed. 00:30:15.240 --> 00:30:20.240 Leave your simple ways and live and walk in the ways of insight. 00:30:20.240 --> 00:30:22.240 You can see the description of her house. 00:30:22.240 --> 00:30:25.240 It's a house that's really grand. 00:30:25.240 --> 00:30:26.240 It's a mansion. 00:30:26.240 --> 00:30:27.240 It has all of these pillars. 00:30:27.240 --> 00:30:30.240 Some people think that it actually represents the temple. 00:30:30.240 --> 00:30:33.240 But in any case, it's a very grand edifice. 00:30:33.240 --> 00:30:40.240 And that really is in keeping with the topic of wisdom itself, because wisdom is such a grand thing. 00:30:40.240 --> 00:30:42.240 Wisdom is such a beautiful thing. 00:30:42.240 --> 00:30:44.240 Wisdom is such a great thing. 00:30:44.240 --> 00:30:56.240 And it becomes the emphasis on wisdom that Lady Wisdom has actually prepared such a magnificent place in which her reception is actually being held. 00:30:56.240 --> 00:31:02.240 And of course, that illustrates for us the grandeur of God's salvation. 00:31:02.240 --> 00:31:08.240 The grandeur of the wisdom that is in Christ, as we saw Paul writing to the Corinthians about it. 00:31:08.240 --> 00:31:13.240 There is no wisdom but that wisdom in Christ that's worth speaking about. 00:31:13.240 --> 00:31:21.240 The grandeur of that wisdom, the beauty of that wisdom, the greatness of that wisdom in contrast with the wisdom of the world. 00:31:21.240 --> 00:31:31.240 The Bible is presenting it to us in a way that shows that all the representations of it in the Bible are fitting of the topic itself. 00:31:31.240 --> 00:31:37.240 And what's on the menu in Lady Wisdom's house? 00:31:37.240 --> 00:31:39.240 Well, she has a banquet. 00:31:39.240 --> 00:31:41.240 She has slaughtered her beast. 00:31:41.240 --> 00:31:42.240 She has mixed her wine. 00:31:42.240 --> 00:31:44.240 She has carefully set her table. 00:31:44.240 --> 00:31:50.240 And she sent out her young women with the invitation to call people to come to that reception. 00:31:50.240 --> 00:31:58.240 In other words, it is very much to do with the best possible food, with the finest of ingredients, with the finest of dishes. 00:31:58.240 --> 00:32:08.240 Everything that's set on the table just speaks of sustenance and substance and beauty. 00:32:08.240 --> 00:32:19.240 And the Bible very often describes the salvation that God has provided for us in Jesus as a grand banquet. 00:32:19.240 --> 00:32:28.240 And that everything we find set out in Jesus for us is, spiritually speaking, the finest possible spiritual food. 00:32:28.240 --> 00:32:33.240 Let me just remind you of one of these passages in Isaiah's prophecy. 00:32:33.240 --> 00:32:36.240 If you find it, Isaiah 25. 00:32:36.240 --> 00:32:41.240 Isaiah 25 speaks about this banquet that God has provided. 00:32:41.240 --> 00:32:44.240 Looking ahead in Isaiah's day to the days of the Gospel. 00:32:44.240 --> 00:32:53.240 And looking ahead to the way in which God's provision there would be so rich and so full and so meaningful in the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:32:53.240 --> 00:32:58.240 It's Isaiah 25, verses 6-8. 00:32:58.240 --> 00:33:05.240 Here is how Isaiah described it for those of his own day in a prophetic way. 00:33:05.240 --> 00:33:12.240 On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food. 00:33:12.240 --> 00:33:14.240 A feast of well-aged wine. 00:33:14.240 --> 00:33:16.240 Of rich food full of marrow. 00:33:16.240 --> 00:33:20.240 Of aged wild wine well refined. 00:33:20.240 --> 00:33:25.240 And he will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples. 00:33:25.240 --> 00:33:28.240 The veil that is spread over all nations. 00:33:28.240 --> 00:33:30.240 He will swallow up death forever. 00:33:30.240 --> 00:33:35.240 And the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces. 00:33:35.240 --> 00:33:42.240 And you can see how the description spread into the emphasis there on spiritual life. 00:33:42.240 --> 00:33:46.240 The life that is so full of beautiful spiritual life. 00:33:46.240 --> 00:33:49.240 Represented by the best possible banquet. 00:33:49.240 --> 00:33:51.240 Here is what the Lord is going to prepare. 00:33:51.240 --> 00:33:55.240 And here is what is on the Gospel table for us tonight. 00:33:55.240 --> 00:33:58.240 Here is what God is saying, I have prepared for you. 00:33:58.240 --> 00:33:59.240 I've prepared it for all people. 00:33:59.240 --> 00:34:01.240 It is an open invitation that is given. 00:34:01.240 --> 00:34:04.240 Lady Wisdom has set forth her servant. 00:34:04.240 --> 00:34:09.239 She is calling you and she is calling me to this great banquet tonight. 00:34:09.239 --> 00:34:12.239 So that you and I will partake of this great feast. 00:34:12.239 --> 00:34:17.239 And if you just imagine for a moment. 00:34:17.239 --> 00:34:18.239 It is not really imagination. 00:34:18.239 --> 00:34:20.239 It is fact. 00:34:20.239 --> 00:34:22.239 But just think for a moment. 00:34:22.239 --> 00:34:25.239 At the preparation of this great banquet. 00:34:25.239 --> 00:34:38.239 Lady Wisdom, even from these few words in chapter 9 of Proverbs, you can see she has gone to great expense and great detail and great outlay in providing this banquet for those that she is inviting. 00:34:38.239 --> 00:34:47.239 Now how much more is it the case that that when it represents salvation in Christ, how much more is the reality in Jesus himself? 00:34:47.239 --> 00:34:53.239 Think of what it took to prepare this Gospel table, this Gospel banquet for the likes of you and me. 00:34:53.239 --> 00:34:55.239 How did the Lord set about preparing it? 00:34:55.239 --> 00:35:01.239 How was it actually provided for us? 00:35:01.239 --> 00:35:07.239 What did it take to provide this Gospel banquet for you and for me? 00:35:07.239 --> 00:35:10.239 Well, you know the answer to that, I'm sure, already. 00:35:10.239 --> 00:35:17.239 It actually took nothing less than the price of Christ's life. 00:35:17.239 --> 00:35:19.239 He laid down his life. 00:35:19.239 --> 00:35:21.239 He died the death of the cross. 00:35:21.239 --> 00:35:23.239 He rose again from the dead. 00:35:23.239 --> 00:35:33.239 All of that, step by step, is God preparing this wonderful banquet in the Gospel for us, in his salvation for us. 00:35:33.239 --> 00:35:38.239 And all of these wonderful steps are God setting out his table and saying, 00:35:38.239 --> 00:35:40.239 Here, that's it now finished. 00:35:40.239 --> 00:35:42.239 All the food is fully prepared. 00:35:42.239 --> 00:35:45.239 It's laid out on the table for you. 00:35:45.239 --> 00:35:47.239 And here is Lady Wisdom saying, 00:35:47.239 --> 00:35:51.239 Come and partake of this feast. 00:35:51.239 --> 00:35:53.239 Take up the invitation, 00:35:53.239 --> 00:36:00.239 because it's an invitation to the very best that God himself could provide. 00:36:00.239 --> 00:36:07.239 Now, God, tonight, expects that you and I will send in our RSVP. 00:36:07.239 --> 00:36:13.239 And there's no date on it, because he expects you to do it immediately. 00:36:13.239 --> 00:36:21.239 Whenever you hear the Gospel call inviting you to life in Jesus Christ, 00:36:21.239 --> 00:36:25.239 to know the Savior as your own Savior, God doesn't say, 00:36:25.239 --> 00:36:30.239 respond to me by next week or by next month or by such and such a date. 00:36:30.239 --> 00:36:31.239 He says, 00:36:31.239 --> 00:36:34.239 This now is the day of salvation. 00:36:34.239 --> 00:36:39.239 Today, if you hear his voice, don't harden your heart. 00:36:39.239 --> 00:36:44.239 Don't actually send in your RSVP now by way of saying, 00:36:44.239 --> 00:36:46.239 Well, I'll leave it for the moment. 00:36:46.239 --> 00:36:52.239 Because remember, leaving it for the moment is really the same thing as refusal. 00:36:52.239 --> 00:36:55.239 That's what it amounts to. 00:36:55.239 --> 00:36:57.239 And here is Lady Wisdom. 00:36:57.239 --> 00:36:58.239 Here is the Lord. 00:36:58.239 --> 00:37:00.239 The Lord, through what he has done, 00:37:00.239 --> 00:37:04.239 preparing this wonderful banquet in the Lord Jesus Christ for us, 00:37:04.239 --> 00:37:06.239 the salvation that's in him. 00:37:06.239 --> 00:37:09.239 He's actually saying, Turn in here. 00:37:09.239 --> 00:37:12.239 She says here, Whoever is simple, let him turn in here. 00:37:12.239 --> 00:37:18.239 Now, that doesn't mean somebody who is really of a low intellectual capacity. 00:37:18.239 --> 00:37:23.239 Simple in the use of it here in the book of Proverbs actually means, 00:37:23.239 --> 00:37:28.239 it's got the idea behind the word of someone who needs to be taught, 00:37:28.239 --> 00:37:31.239 who has a mind that requires instruction. 00:37:31.239 --> 00:37:34.239 And you can see how that in the book of Proverbs, 00:37:34.239 --> 00:37:36.239 in the first few chapters at least, 00:37:36.239 --> 00:37:40.239 you find, Hear my son, the instruction of a father. 00:37:40.239 --> 00:37:41.239 My son, my son, my son. 00:37:41.239 --> 00:37:45.239 It's a father instructing the child and teaching wisdom to the child. 00:37:45.239 --> 00:37:49.239 Well, here is the word simple really behind it, as we say, 00:37:49.239 --> 00:37:52.239 has the idea of a mind that needs instruction. 00:37:52.239 --> 00:37:58.239 But you see, a mind that needs instruction can be led and can be misled, 00:37:58.239 --> 00:38:02.239 can be led in one direction or in the other direction, 00:38:02.239 --> 00:38:08.239 can be led in the way of accepting Lady Wisdom's invitation, 00:38:08.239 --> 00:38:14.239 or else alternatively and sadly and devastatingly and destructively, 00:38:14.239 --> 00:38:17.239 accepting Madam Folly's invitation. 00:38:17.239 --> 00:38:21.239 You know these two voices for yourself. 00:38:21.239 --> 00:38:24.239 We're all familiar with them, I'm sure. 00:38:24.239 --> 00:38:27.239 Whenever we hear the gospel message, 00:38:27.239 --> 00:38:31.239 there's also something else there in our hearts and our minds that says, 00:38:31.239 --> 00:38:33.239 you don't need to do it just now. 00:38:33.239 --> 00:38:38.239 That's Madam Folly calling and inviting you to listen to her side of it 00:38:38.239 --> 00:38:40.239 and to accept her view of things 00:38:40.239 --> 00:38:46.239 and for the moment not to comply with the voice of Lady Wisdom. 00:38:46.239 --> 00:38:53.239 And that's why both wisdom and foolishness are represented here as two women, 00:38:53.239 --> 00:38:57.239 each of them calling to those who are passing by. 00:38:57.239 --> 00:39:02.239 You know this I think is very relevant indeed to us all, 00:39:02.239 --> 00:39:07.239 but relevant particularly in our day to our young people and to our children. 00:39:07.239 --> 00:39:09.239 Because this is exactly what they're facing. 00:39:09.239 --> 00:39:14.239 And that's why we're so thrilled this morning to see all of these youngsters 00:39:14.239 --> 00:39:19.239 from creche right through to Bible class coming to the prize giving. 00:39:19.239 --> 00:39:22.239 And what a wonderful thrilling occasion that was. 00:39:22.239 --> 00:39:26.239 But really what is behind, what's in our minds as we see that, 00:39:26.239 --> 00:39:30.239 is not just rejoicing at the number that do come to Sunday School 00:39:30.239 --> 00:39:33.239 and to these other activities and so on. 00:39:33.239 --> 00:39:36.239 We also are very much aware that what we're doing 00:39:36.239 --> 00:39:42.239 is seeking to set them in the way of accepting Lady Wisdom's invitation. 00:39:42.239 --> 00:39:49.239 Because out there they're facing the invitation on the voice of Madame Folly. 00:39:49.239 --> 00:39:54.239 And it's there in our society, it's there even in our school setup, 00:39:54.239 --> 00:39:59.239 where even from government recommendations, 00:39:59.239 --> 00:40:05.239 we find elements in the teaching throughout the curriculum in our land 00:40:05.239 --> 00:40:07.239 that is really at odds with the Bible. 00:40:07.239 --> 00:40:12.239 And you'll find not just in terms of spiritual, moral education, 00:40:12.239 --> 00:40:16.239 but also in terms of what sort of lifestyle people ought to live, 00:40:16.239 --> 00:40:18.239 people ought to choose. 00:40:18.239 --> 00:40:21.239 Questions that really are set in young people's minds 00:40:21.239 --> 00:40:26.239 that ought never to be there at that early stage. 00:40:26.239 --> 00:40:34.239 That's Madame Folly's attempt to draw young people away from the truth, 00:40:34.239 --> 00:40:40.239 from the Lord, from the House of Wisdom, from the banquet of salvation. 00:40:40.239 --> 00:40:44.239 And it's a privilege and it's our duty as a church, 00:40:44.239 --> 00:40:47.239 but also of course in our homes and our families, 00:40:47.239 --> 00:40:51.239 to actually set out these alternatives clearly for our young people, 00:40:51.239 --> 00:40:53.239 which is what we try to do. 00:40:53.239 --> 00:40:56.239 As we try and say to them, look, here's the voice of Jesus, 00:40:56.239 --> 00:41:00.239 here's the voice of God, here's the invitation of God to come 00:41:00.239 --> 00:41:09.239 and accept what He lovingly and meaningfully and patiently is setting out for us in the Gospel. 00:41:09.239 --> 00:41:13.239 But we teach them too that there's another voice in the world, 00:41:13.239 --> 00:41:20.239 there's another voice you'll hear, there's another power at work that will try and ridicule these things, 00:41:20.239 --> 00:41:25.239 that will try and say to you, no, don't go down that route. 00:41:25.239 --> 00:41:27.239 Don't listen to that voice. 00:41:27.239 --> 00:41:32.239 Instead, take the route of Madame Folly. 00:41:32.239 --> 00:41:40.239 Take the route of worldliness, of sin, of putting God aside and putting Him out of your life. 00:41:40.239 --> 00:41:46.239 And it's so relevant that in the voice of the Gospel and truth on one side, 00:41:46.239 --> 00:41:49.239 there's also the voice of sin and death on the other side. 00:41:49.239 --> 00:41:55.239 Friends, let's never forget our children need our prayers daily 00:41:55.239 --> 00:42:01.239 so as to face these issues with the teaching of their Bible in their hearts, 00:42:01.239 --> 00:42:11.239 with the voice of Lady Wisdom completely outdoing and drumming out the voice of Madame Folly. 00:42:11.239 --> 00:42:19.239 And we pray that you who have young families and who bring so faithfully your young families to church, 00:42:19.239 --> 00:42:22.239 to listen to the Gospel, to be part of the worship of God, 00:42:22.239 --> 00:42:31.239 we pray that your dedication and your commitment of the children to the teaching of the Gospel, 00:42:31.239 --> 00:42:34.239 the teaching of the church, the teaching of the Bible, 00:42:34.239 --> 00:42:40.239 that it will be blessed by God that your young children will grow up in the way that you want them to grow up, 00:42:40.239 --> 00:42:46.239 following the ways of the Lord, the ways of Lady Wisdom, not of Madame Folly. 00:42:46.239 --> 00:42:54.239 So here is Lady Wisdom's reception. All the way through there to verse 12, you have her invitation, 00:42:54.239 --> 00:43:00.239 you have some things that she specifies in terms of wise living. 00:43:00.239 --> 00:43:06.239 And when you turn to Madame Folly's reception from verse 13 to the end of the chapter, 00:43:06.239 --> 00:43:13.239 you find some similarities, some things indeed which are identical interestingly enough, 00:43:13.239 --> 00:43:23.239 but you'll also find things which are very, very different, indeed opposite to what you find in the invitations and the setup of Lady Wisdom. 00:43:23.239 --> 00:43:35.239 First of all, the hostess herself. The woman, Folly, is loud. She is seductive and knows nothing. 00:43:35.239 --> 00:43:45.239 You see, she's such an opposite person to Lady Wisdom because what you find is that her emphasis is on the ways of sin, the ways of darkness, 00:43:45.239 --> 00:43:49.239 the ways of ignoring the voice of Lady Wisdom. 00:43:49.239 --> 00:43:54.239 And you go through the book of Proverbs and you find chapters like chapter 7, for example, 00:43:54.239 --> 00:43:56.239 the words of the book of Proverbs and the Bible. 00:43:56.239 --> 00:44:00.239 And as we often say and see as we go into passages of the Old Testament, 00:44:00.239 --> 00:44:08.239 they're absolutely up to date for the day we live in, for the things we're facing, for the situation our children are facing as well. 00:44:08.239 --> 00:44:18.239 And as you go through chapter 7 there, you can see from verse 4 how the warnings that are set out there. 00:44:18.239 --> 00:44:24.239 And then from verse 10, the woman meets him, this ugly Madam Folly. 00:44:24.239 --> 00:44:30.239 She meets him dressed as a prostitute, wily of heart. 00:44:30.239 --> 00:44:32.239 She's loud and wayward. 00:44:32.239 --> 00:44:34.239 Her feet do not stay at home. 00:44:34.239 --> 00:44:36.239 Now in the street, now in the market. 00:44:36.239 --> 00:44:38.239 At every corner she lies in wait. 00:44:38.239 --> 00:44:40.239 She seizes him and kisses him. 00:44:40.239 --> 00:44:42.239 And with a bold face she says to him, 00:44:42.239 --> 00:44:45.239 I had to offer sacrifice. Today I've paid my vows. 00:44:45.239 --> 00:44:48.239 Now I've come out to meet you, to seek you eagerly. 00:44:48.239 --> 00:44:49.239 And I found you. 00:44:49.239 --> 00:44:53.239 And I've spread are in church here tonight, 00:45:23.239 --> 00:45:28.239 there are thousands of our fellow human beings of all age groups, 00:45:28.239 --> 00:45:34.239 embroiled and enmeshed in the seductive ways of Madam Folly. 00:45:35.239 --> 00:45:39.239 Enmeshed in her tentacles, in her net. 00:45:39.239 --> 00:45:42.239 They have listened to her voice. 00:45:42.239 --> 00:45:44.239 They have followed her advice. 00:45:44.239 --> 00:45:46.239 They have taken up her ways. 00:45:46.239 --> 00:45:54.239 And in the practices of so many sadly in our land, 00:45:54.239 --> 00:46:03.239 the sinful leanings of our hearts have capitulated to the voice of Madam Folly. 00:46:03.239 --> 00:46:12.239 You see, having a worldly good time, we all know what that is. 00:46:12.239 --> 00:46:18.239 Some of us perhaps, thankfully, have never been part of that ever in our lives, 00:46:18.239 --> 00:46:20.239 but most of us have been. 00:46:20.239 --> 00:46:24.239 And we thought that having a good time was the way to live. 00:46:24.239 --> 00:46:30.239 Having a good time in the ways of the world, in the sinful practices of the world. 00:46:30.239 --> 00:46:33.239 We thought that that was the best way we could possibly live. 00:46:33.239 --> 00:46:35.239 And we listened to the voice that said to us, 00:46:35.239 --> 00:46:37.239 Oh, don't go with these religious people. 00:46:37.239 --> 00:46:43.239 Don't actually go to be involved in church attendance and listening to the gospel, 00:46:43.239 --> 00:46:49.239 and the kind of preaching that sets out the ways of sin and the ways of death and the ways of salvation, 00:46:49.239 --> 00:46:52.239 and all of these things that really people nowadays don't want to hear. 00:46:52.239 --> 00:46:55.239 That's the voice that says to you, Don't go down that route. 00:46:55.239 --> 00:46:59.239 Don't listen to these people. 00:46:59.239 --> 00:47:09.239 But you know, friends, having a good time in worldly terms is really just a covering for spiritual emptiness. 00:47:09.239 --> 00:47:13.239 Covering for spiritual emptiness. 00:47:13.239 --> 00:47:21.239 Look at the people tonight that are involved in having a good time in a worldly sense, 00:47:21.239 --> 00:47:28.239 whether it's on a stage, whether it's at a concert, whether it's at any of these sort of activities, 00:47:28.239 --> 00:47:32.239 whether it could be Glastonbury or something smaller than that, ways of the world. 00:47:32.239 --> 00:47:35.239 There are many other ways that you could mention along with that. 00:47:35.239 --> 00:47:40.239 I'm not confining by any means to that, or just picking out these deliberately. 00:47:40.239 --> 00:47:42.239 They're just examples. 00:47:42.239 --> 00:47:47.239 But all of these people who are living for the world and following the ways of Madame Folly, 00:47:47.239 --> 00:47:49.239 what are they trying to do? 00:47:49.239 --> 00:47:52.239 They're trying to get something into their hearts that will satisfy. 00:47:52.239 --> 00:47:56.239 Something that will meet our deepest human needs. 00:47:56.239 --> 00:47:59.239 Something that will last for us. 00:47:59.239 --> 00:48:03.239 Something that will really build us up and give us a buzz 00:48:03.239 --> 00:48:06.239 against all the negative things that we come across in life. 00:48:06.239 --> 00:48:12.239 And the Bible is telling us they might give you a buzz in a certain sinful sense. 00:48:12.239 --> 00:48:16.239 There are such things, as the Bible says, as the pleasures of sin. 00:48:16.239 --> 00:48:20.239 They're the things which Moses refused, but they're described in Hebrews, 00:48:20.239 --> 00:48:27.239 and in chapter 11 of Hebrews, as Moses refused them and chose instead to suffer affliction with the people of God, 00:48:27.239 --> 00:48:31.239 rather than the short-lived pleasures of sin. 00:48:31.239 --> 00:48:40.239 You might have a whole lifetime of the pleasures of sin under the seductive ways of Madame Folly. 00:48:40.239 --> 00:48:43.239 But that's the end of them. 00:48:43.239 --> 00:48:45.239 They're short-lived. 00:48:45.239 --> 00:48:50.239 And eternity is long without end. 00:48:50.239 --> 00:48:55.239 And there is no way back beyond the grave. 00:48:55.239 --> 00:48:59.239 There's no opportunity to relive your life. 00:48:59.239 --> 00:49:01.239 You can't come back and say, 00:49:01.239 --> 00:49:05.239 well, I made a mistake the first time, but now I know better. 00:49:05.239 --> 00:49:08.239 What the Bible is saying to you is, you know better now. 00:49:08.239 --> 00:49:12.239 And what the Word of God is saying to us all is, 00:49:12.239 --> 00:49:14.239 here is wisdom. 00:49:14.239 --> 00:49:19.239 And here is Madame Folly trying to drown out the voice of Lady Wisdom. 00:49:19.239 --> 00:49:25.239 And as she cries out, this is the invitation that he's setting out. 00:49:25.239 --> 00:49:29.239 And you notice how she sits at the door of her house. 00:49:29.239 --> 00:49:33.239 She takes a seat on the highest places of the town. 00:49:33.239 --> 00:49:37.239 And you see that is the same exactly as what you find in verse 3. 00:49:37.239 --> 00:49:42.239 She has sent out her young women to call from the highest places in the town. 00:49:42.239 --> 00:49:49.239 I don't think that just means the highest, you know, in terms of natural height. 00:49:49.239 --> 00:49:52.239 It also means surely in terms of influence. 00:49:52.239 --> 00:49:56.239 And the fact of the matter is, as you well know, in our society today, 00:49:56.239 --> 00:50:03.239 invitations from Madame Folly are sent out from the highest positions in the land. 00:50:03.239 --> 00:50:10.239 Because some of those in the highest places in the land, in our political system, in our government, 00:50:10.239 --> 00:50:15.239 are actually already capitulated long ago to the voice of Madame Folly. 00:50:15.239 --> 00:50:20.239 And are recommending the ways of Madame Folly to us and to our children. 00:50:20.239 --> 00:50:23.239 From the highest places. 00:50:23.239 --> 00:50:27.239 She takes a seat in the highest places of the town. 00:50:27.239 --> 00:50:29.239 Calling to those who pass by, 00:50:29.239 --> 00:50:33.239 Turn in here and take of my banquet. 00:50:33.239 --> 00:50:37.239 A sad, sad situation. 00:50:37.239 --> 00:50:42.239 A sad situation for Scotland, for our land. 00:50:42.239 --> 00:50:52.239 That really had such a magnificent impact from the Reformation all of these centuries ago. 00:50:52.239 --> 00:50:57.239 But you know, the gospel of the Reformation is still our gospel. 00:50:57.239 --> 00:51:00.239 The truth of the Reformation is still our truth. 00:51:00.239 --> 00:51:07.239 And that's what we seek to have as an offset to the ways of Madame Folly. 00:51:07.239 --> 00:51:10.239 But what a sad spectacle it is. 00:51:10.239 --> 00:51:19.239 That so many, even in the highest places, are following and recommending the banquet of Madame Folly. 00:51:19.239 --> 00:51:23.239 And sadly, many are listening and accepting the invitation. 00:51:23.239 --> 00:51:25.239 Pray for our government. 00:51:25.239 --> 00:51:30.239 Pray for those in places of authority and influence. 00:51:30.239 --> 00:51:37.239 Pray for Christians amongst those who represent us in Parliament and in the Scottish Parliament. 00:51:37.239 --> 00:51:41.239 Pray for those who are struggling to present the Christian view. 00:51:41.239 --> 00:51:43.239 We often find them criticized. 00:51:43.239 --> 00:51:45.239 We often find that they're singled out for criticism. 00:51:45.239 --> 00:51:58.239 When something happens and maybe they have a difficulty of really not complying or having a collective responsibility in government, as often is the case. 00:51:58.239 --> 00:52:00.239 Pray for those Christians in government. 00:52:00.239 --> 00:52:04.239 Pray for those who have made it known openly that they are the Lord's. 00:52:04.239 --> 00:52:07.239 They have an exceedingly difficult task nowadays. 00:52:07.239 --> 00:52:11.239 They are facing the seductive ways of Madame Folly. 00:52:11.239 --> 00:52:16.239 They are facing those who have long since capitulated to Madame Folly and have influence in our land. 00:52:16.239 --> 00:52:31.239 And they are giving such a wide place to pressure groups that actually set out immoral ways of life that they recommend to our people. 00:52:31.239 --> 00:52:34.239 And this is what Madame Folly is saying. 00:52:34.239 --> 00:52:37.239 What's on the menu with Madame Folly? 00:52:37.239 --> 00:52:39.239 Well, as we saw in chapter 7. 00:52:39.239 --> 00:52:42.239 She says here in chapter 9, 00:52:42.239 --> 00:52:43.239 Turn in here. 00:52:43.239 --> 00:52:45.239 Stolen water is sweet. 00:52:45.239 --> 00:52:47.239 Bread eaten and secret is pleasant. 00:52:47.239 --> 00:52:48.239 Chapter 7. 00:52:48.239 --> 00:52:50.239 I don't need to read it again. 00:52:50.239 --> 00:52:51.239 It's very graphic. 00:52:51.239 --> 00:52:55.239 The Bible doesn't actually hide the things which really need to be stressed. 00:52:55.239 --> 00:52:57.239 It doesn't pull any punches. 00:52:57.239 --> 00:53:00.239 It sets things out as they are. 00:53:00.239 --> 00:53:02.239 These are the ways of the world. 00:53:02.239 --> 00:53:04.239 These are the ways of sin. 00:53:04.239 --> 00:53:06.239 These are the ways of debauchery. 00:53:06.239 --> 00:53:13.239 These are the ways of a lifestyle that is at odds with the ways of God and with the ways of wisdom. 00:53:13.239 --> 00:53:14.239 Adultery. 00:53:14.239 --> 00:53:16.239 Sexual immorality. 00:53:16.239 --> 00:53:21.239 All of the things that are associated with that and related issues. 00:53:21.239 --> 00:53:23.239 Human life. 00:53:23.239 --> 00:53:27.239 The life of the unborn. 00:53:27.239 --> 00:53:32.239 Those who are vulnerable in society. 00:53:32.239 --> 00:53:40.239 The pressure brought upon those in medical practices to accept euthanasia. 00:53:40.239 --> 00:53:46.239 To go down that route that Madame Folly sets out for us as a society. 00:53:46.239 --> 00:53:49.239 Hence, this is our situation. 00:53:49.239 --> 00:53:52.239 We have the advantage of the gospel. 00:53:52.239 --> 00:53:55.239 We have the advantage of knowing the truth. 00:53:55.239 --> 00:53:59.239 We have the responsibility and the privilege of living that truth. 00:53:59.239 --> 00:54:03.239 Of saying to people, don't listen to Madame Folly. 00:54:03.239 --> 00:54:07.239 Come instead and listen to the voice of Lady Wisdom. 00:54:07.239 --> 00:54:14.239 Come and experience beauty and integrity and moral enhancement. 00:54:14.239 --> 00:54:20.239 And so that banquet is all about what is wrong. 00:54:20.239 --> 00:54:22.239 What is sinful. 00:54:22.239 --> 00:54:23.239 What is impure. 00:54:23.239 --> 00:54:27.239 And I say to the young people here, especially tonight. 00:54:27.239 --> 00:54:31.239 Don't fall in with the ways of the world. 00:54:31.239 --> 00:54:34.239 Look after your life. 00:54:34.239 --> 00:54:38.239 Look after your moral reputation. 00:54:38.239 --> 00:54:43.239 Look after what you're doing with your life from day to day. 00:54:43.239 --> 00:54:48.239 And especially, don't listen to Madame Folly. 00:54:48.239 --> 00:54:50.239 Don't listen to the voice of foolishness. 00:54:50.239 --> 00:54:55.239 The voice that tells you it's a wist of time to follow Jesus. 00:54:55.239 --> 00:55:01.239 And a voice that says, you'd be far better off forgetting all these things about the Bible. 00:55:01.239 --> 00:55:04.239 You know that voice is not from God. 00:55:04.239 --> 00:55:07.239 You know that voice is the voice that hates God. 00:55:07.239 --> 00:55:12.239 The voice of Madame Folly, Madame Foolishness. 00:55:12.239 --> 00:55:17.239 So here is the great contrast we have in the chapter. 00:55:17.239 --> 00:55:19.239 And then look how it finishes. 00:55:19.239 --> 00:55:21.239 Here is Madame Folly. 00:55:21.239 --> 00:55:22.239 She's described. 00:55:22.239 --> 00:55:24.239 You can see what's on her table. 00:55:24.239 --> 00:55:27.239 That sinful lifestyle that's set out there. 00:55:27.239 --> 00:55:29.239 Unabashedly. 00:55:29.239 --> 00:55:30.239 Grotesquely. 00:55:30.239 --> 00:55:32.239 Without shame. 00:55:32.239 --> 00:55:35.239 And look at how it finishes. 00:55:35.239 --> 00:55:38.239 Here is somebody who has complied. 00:55:38.239 --> 00:55:44.239 Who has actually listened to her invitation and goes to take her banquet. 00:55:44.239 --> 00:55:47.239 And he hears, stolen water is sweet. 00:55:47.239 --> 00:55:49.239 Bread eaten in secret is pleasant. 00:55:49.239 --> 00:55:52.239 Nobody knows you're doing these things. 00:55:52.239 --> 00:55:58.239 But he does not know that the dead are there. 00:55:58.239 --> 00:56:04.239 And that our guests are in the depths of Sheol or hell or the grave. 00:56:04.239 --> 00:56:06.239 Different ways of translating that. 00:56:06.239 --> 00:56:17.239 You see, she's left her guest list has not actually been advertised in the call that she set out in the invitation. 00:56:17.239 --> 00:56:20.239 She mentioned nothing about the other guests who are coming. 00:56:20.239 --> 00:56:24.239 But here is the reality of the situation. 00:56:24.239 --> 00:56:28.239 Here is God telling us to listen to the voice of Madame Folly. 00:56:28.239 --> 00:56:32.239 She's hidden the fact that her guests are the dead. 00:56:32.239 --> 00:56:34.239 That doesn't mean the literally dead. 00:56:34.239 --> 00:56:37.239 It means the spiritually dead. 00:56:37.239 --> 00:56:41.239 That her guests are in the depths of Sheol. 00:56:41.239 --> 00:56:43.239 He does not know that the dead are there. 00:56:43.239 --> 00:56:45.239 She didn't tell him beforehand. 00:56:45.239 --> 00:56:48.239 And sadly many people find out too late. 00:56:48.239 --> 00:56:51.239 That the guests of Madame Folly are the dead. 00:56:51.239 --> 00:56:55.239 And you come to realize when you join them. 00:56:55.239 --> 00:56:58.239 I didn't know about this. 00:56:58.239 --> 00:57:01.239 But tonight God is telling you. 00:57:01.239 --> 00:57:04.239 There are two voices. 00:57:04.239 --> 00:57:06.239 Two invitations. 00:57:06.239 --> 00:57:08.239 Two receptions. 00:57:08.239 --> 00:57:10.239 Two banquets. 00:57:10.239 --> 00:57:13.239 Two women. 00:57:13.239 --> 00:57:16.239 A woman of beauty. 00:57:16.239 --> 00:57:18.239 And an ugly woman. 00:57:18.239 --> 00:57:21.239 A woman of integrity. 00:57:21.239 --> 00:57:23.239 And a woman of debauchery. 00:57:23.239 --> 00:57:28.239 And each of them is calling for your obedience. 00:57:28.239 --> 00:57:33.239 And God is saying to you. 00:57:33.239 --> 00:57:36.239 Don't be a fool. 00:57:36.239 --> 00:57:38.239 And turn away from wisdom. 00:57:38.239 --> 00:57:46.239 Because the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. 00:57:46.239 --> 00:57:51.239 And the knowledge of the Holy One is inside. 00:57:51.239 --> 00:57:54.239 For by me your days will be multiplied. 00:57:54.239 --> 00:57:58.239 And years will be added to your life.
