Now, we're going to do something a little bit different. We sometimes do 00:00:15.580 --> 00:00:19.480 this, but I'm going to give a bit more of an introduction, and then we'll get into the passage, 00:00:20.039 --> 00:00:28.879 just so that we don't get lost in this genealogy. So, I guess as a way of introduction, I wonder 00:00:28.879 --> 00:00:37.879 if you have ever encountered a particularly frustrating cliffhanger. I wonder what's your 00:00:37.879 --> 00:00:41.719 most frustrating cliffhanger that you've encountered, maybe in a film or in a book. 00:00:42.759 --> 00:00:49.320 Well, I remember when I was young, I remember watching The Italian Job on repeat with my friend, 00:00:49.820 --> 00:00:55.820 and we were absolutely obsessed with cars. We absolutely loved this film. And if you have 00:00:55.820 --> 00:01:02.880 watched this film, you will know that it ends with a literal cliffhanger. So, the gang, they're winding 00:01:02.880 --> 00:01:08.640 their way up into the Italian mountains with the stolen gold in the back of the bus, and then 00:01:08.640 --> 00:01:15.539 suddenly they spin out of control, and the bus ends up literally hanging over the edge of a cliff. 00:01:15.540 --> 00:01:23.000 And I remember desperately wanting to know what happened next. The bus is dangling on the edge. 00:01:23.780 --> 00:01:27.620 Are they going to get away with the gold, or are they going to lose it all down the cliff? 00:01:28.840 --> 00:01:36.580 But there is no sequel to this film. We don't get to find out what happened next. All our questions 00:01:36.579 --> 00:01:44.840 are left unanswered. Well, the Old Testament similarly ends with a bit of a cliffhanger. 00:01:45.420 --> 00:01:56.640 It ends with loads of questions left unanswered. Who will come and perfectly lead and save and purify 00:01:56.640 --> 00:02:04.579 and make righteous the people of God? Who can save them from their endless cycles of sin? 00:02:04.579 --> 00:02:11.319 Who's going to mend the rift that has been caused between them and their holy God? 00:02:12.840 --> 00:02:19.159 Who's the one that God said would come from Abraham's descendants and bless all the people of the earth? 00:02:19.400 --> 00:02:24.419 Who's the one that would come from David's line who would rule on his throne forever? 00:02:24.900 --> 00:02:30.159 Who is the one that God said would suffer and die for his people? Who is that person? 00:02:30.159 --> 00:02:36.439 Well, by the end of the Old Testament, we have many questions about the identity of this promised one, 00:02:36.659 --> 00:02:38.620 which are not yet answered. 00:02:39.639 --> 00:02:45.900 But unlike the Italian job, this story, the story of the Old Testament, it has a sequel. 00:02:46.579 --> 00:02:50.960 And it's called the New Testament. And it begins with the book of Matthew. 00:02:50.960 --> 00:02:55.740 And right at the beginning of the New Testament, we encounter this story. 00:02:56.020 --> 00:03:00.379 And so this is Matthew's account of Jesus's life, Matthew's gospel. 00:03:01.180 --> 00:03:04.020 And in this story, we find out about Jesus's birth. 00:03:04.360 --> 00:03:15.140 We find out about his life and his death and his resurrection and how he is the answer to all of these unanswered questions from the Old Testament. 00:03:15.139 --> 00:03:19.719 So, yeah, we're going to, as Graham said, we're starting a new series here today. 00:03:19.839 --> 00:03:22.039 So we're going to be looking at this in the run up to Christmas. 00:03:22.679 --> 00:03:28.259 And then the new year, we're going to carry on thinking a bit more about the beginning of Jesus's ministry. 00:03:30.379 --> 00:03:35.719 And the unusual thing about this story is that it begins with a genealogy. 00:03:36.519 --> 00:03:40.739 That is a list of names or a sort of family tree, but without the branches. 00:03:40.740 --> 00:03:47.500 So like one particular line from trunk all the way up to a particular branch. 00:03:48.879 --> 00:03:51.780 And you might have encountered a genealogy before. 00:03:52.840 --> 00:03:56.939 But what they are really is an important record of names. 00:03:57.100 --> 00:03:59.379 So where has Jesus come from? 00:04:00.480 --> 00:04:06.660 And it's important to think about why Matthew has chosen to start his gospel in this way. 00:04:06.659 --> 00:04:16.959 Well, like a very bad cards player, Matthew begins his game by laying out all his best cards right at the beginning of the game. 00:04:17.040 --> 00:04:20.439 He lays out all his aces at the beginning of his game. 00:04:21.019 --> 00:04:26.899 And what he is doing is that he is telling us who this baby is. 00:04:27.060 --> 00:04:32.920 So before he tells us what Jesus came to do, he wants us to know exactly who Jesus is. 00:04:33.040 --> 00:04:34.399 What is Jesus's identity? 00:04:34.399 --> 00:04:38.620 So that is what he is wanting to tell us with this genealogy. 00:04:39.719 --> 00:04:43.000 So just a little bit about the structure of where we are going today. 00:04:43.199 --> 00:04:46.000 So this genealogy, it is a story. 00:04:46.560 --> 00:04:48.599 It tells the story of God's people. 00:04:49.500 --> 00:04:52.419 It tells the story of the crown. 00:04:53.379 --> 00:04:55.120 And it is the story of grace. 00:04:55.120 --> 00:05:05.199 And by studying this story, we will hopefully see that Jesus is the long-promised and rightful heir to God's throne. 00:05:05.399 --> 00:05:07.340 And he came in grace. 00:05:08.340 --> 00:05:18.740 And if he is the king of God's kingdom today, then our only right about the story of God's people. 00:08:38.879 --> 00:08:47.500 So this genealogy of Jesus, it tells us the story of God's people over a period of about 2,000 years, 00:08:47.799 --> 00:08:54.559 from Abraham all the way down to Jesus, with David arriving somewhere in the middle. 00:08:54.559 --> 00:09:00.479 So I wonder if you noticed how Matthew divided up this genealogy. 00:09:00.579 --> 00:09:05.919 So there are a few sort of section markers, little moments that we were able to take a breath as we read through. 00:09:05.919 --> 00:09:13.679 And these sections tell us the kind of chapter markers in the story of God, the story of God's people. 00:09:14.179 --> 00:09:17.899 So the first section, as you see on the screen, it begins with Abraham in verse 2. 00:09:18.439 --> 00:09:20.559 Then we see David in verse 6. 00:09:20.919 --> 00:09:26.399 Then we see the deportation of God's people into exile in verse 12. 00:09:26.399 --> 00:09:29.319 And then we see the arrival of Jesus in verse 16. 00:09:29.500 --> 00:09:35.279 And these sections, they speak of these significant moments in the story of God's people. 00:09:35.379 --> 00:09:41.699 And we're going to have a very brief look at these chapter markers through the story of the Old Testament. 00:09:41.939 --> 00:09:44.120 So the first chapter marker, we have Abraham. 00:09:44.980 --> 00:09:50.139 And he was the father of the Jewish nation, the covenant people of God. 00:09:50.379 --> 00:09:55.120 And he was the recipient of some amazing promises from God. 00:09:55.120 --> 00:10:01.320 So we know from Genesis chapter 12 that God gave Abraham the promise of a land. 00:10:01.820 --> 00:10:05.279 He gave Abraham the promise of countless descendants. 00:10:05.960 --> 00:10:11.659 But he also gave Abraham the promise to send one individual from his own family 00:10:11.659 --> 00:10:17.879 who was going to come and be a blessing to all the people of the earth. 00:10:20.440 --> 00:10:24.320 Of course, there are so many more things that we could say about Abraham 00:10:24.320 --> 00:10:29.900 and how we see his promises fulfilled through the rest of salvation history. 00:10:30.020 --> 00:10:34.480 But lock those promises away in the back of your mind, those promises that God made to Abraham. 00:10:35.000 --> 00:10:37.400 The next we see is David in verse 6. 00:10:37.860 --> 00:10:41.740 And so David came, as I said, about a thousand years after Abraham. 00:10:41.740 --> 00:10:48.460 And after God had brought his people into the land that he'd promised them, the nation of Israel, 00:10:48.940 --> 00:10:52.419 after he'd settled them in, after he'd fought for them, 00:10:53.159 --> 00:10:56.980 after he'd appointed countless judges to rule over them, 00:10:57.519 --> 00:10:59.799 he brought along a young man called David. 00:11:00.159 --> 00:11:05.940 And he anointed him to be the first true king over God's people. 00:11:05.940 --> 00:11:13.320 So David would be a faithful king who would not only fight for his people and lead them, 00:11:13.400 --> 00:11:15.220 but also lead them in worship as well. 00:11:15.820 --> 00:11:18.660 He was a spiritual leader for the people as well. 00:11:20.040 --> 00:11:22.620 But God also makes promises to David as well. 00:11:23.440 --> 00:11:28.000 And in 2 Samuel chapter 7, that might be a passage that you know, 00:11:28.080 --> 00:11:31.120 or maybe it's a passage that you don't know, you've never come across before. 00:11:31.120 --> 00:11:34.340 But this is a really important chapter in salvation history, 00:11:34.340 --> 00:11:36.919 because it's here that God makes promises to David. 00:11:37.620 --> 00:11:40.879 He promises to establish the dynasty of David. 00:11:41.460 --> 00:11:45.360 He promises to establish David's throne forever. 00:11:46.399 --> 00:11:49.320 And he promises to send someone from his own family, 00:11:49.560 --> 00:11:53.600 one of his own descendants, who would sit on his throne and rule forever. 00:11:54.840 --> 00:11:56.740 And more about that in a minute. 00:11:57.379 --> 00:11:59.919 So promises to Abraham, promises to David. 00:11:59.919 --> 00:12:06.679 Then the next chapter in this story is the downward spiral of the people. 00:12:06.839 --> 00:12:09.019 So there were kings that followed after David, 00:12:09.839 --> 00:12:12.579 his sons, his grandsons, great-grandsons. 00:12:12.740 --> 00:12:15.459 And these kings were not faithful like David. 00:12:15.740 --> 00:12:19.819 And they lead God's people into this downward spiral, 00:12:20.579 --> 00:12:24.839 into idolatry and immorality and injustice. 00:12:24.840 --> 00:12:29.139 And the people of God and their kings, 00:12:29.259 --> 00:12:31.379 they marry people from the surrounding nations. 00:12:31.820 --> 00:12:34.240 And they start following other gods. 00:12:35.040 --> 00:12:39.560 And they do all the things that God forbade his people to do. 00:12:40.300 --> 00:12:42.460 And then eventually we see in verse 11, 00:12:43.100 --> 00:12:46.980 God allowed his people to be conquered by the Babylonians 00:12:46.980 --> 00:12:49.560 because of their systemic disobedience to him. 00:12:49.559 --> 00:12:52.559 And they are taken out of the land that God had given them. 00:12:53.179 --> 00:12:55.959 And they are taken into the foreign land of Babylon. 00:12:57.439 --> 00:12:59.979 A bit of a low ebb in the story of God. 00:13:00.119 --> 00:13:01.359 A real low moment. 00:13:02.019 --> 00:13:03.799 But then the final chapter in verse 12, 00:13:04.299 --> 00:13:06.219 God calls his people back to their homeland. 00:13:07.059 --> 00:13:10.239 And we must be thinking, hooray, they're back. 00:13:10.319 --> 00:13:11.159 They're back in the land. 00:13:11.739 --> 00:13:12.819 They've got their city back. 00:13:12.820 --> 00:13:14.060 They've got their country back. 00:13:16.000 --> 00:13:21.320 Unfortunately, this isn't the happy ever after that we think it might be. 00:13:22.280 --> 00:13:24.320 God enables them to rebuild their city. 00:13:24.580 --> 00:13:27.960 He enables them to build its walls and rebuild the temple. 00:13:28.620 --> 00:13:30.960 But here we reach the cliffhanger. 00:13:32.420 --> 00:13:35.260 Even though they've returned back to their land, 00:13:36.220 --> 00:13:41.540 the people of God still have those same deep problems with sin. 00:13:41.539 --> 00:13:45.240 The people still fail to worship God properly. 00:13:45.939 --> 00:13:49.639 They are still under the occupying powers of another kingdom. 00:13:50.659 --> 00:13:53.500 What about all those promises that God made to his people? 00:13:54.779 --> 00:13:58.139 Who is that heir to David's throne who will reign forever? 00:13:59.399 --> 00:14:02.219 But this story, it's not finished yet. 00:14:02.759 --> 00:14:05.519 The Old Testament ended in a cliffhanger, but it has the sequel. 00:14:06.199 --> 00:14:07.779 And it begins in the book of Matthew. 00:14:07.779 --> 00:14:16.279 And in verse 1 of Matthew, Matthew tells us that this is the book of the genealogy of Jesus, the Messiah. 00:14:17.059 --> 00:14:19.059 The story of his Genesis. 00:14:19.839 --> 00:14:21.759 The story of where he came from. 00:14:22.740 --> 00:14:30.639 And by starting his gospel in this way, Matthew is declaring that this is a new beginning for the people of God. 00:14:30.639 --> 00:14:35.299 So the genealogy of Jesus, it's the story of God's people. 00:14:36.419 --> 00:14:40.480 And in our next section, we're going to think about, we're going to see that it is the story of the crown. 00:14:40.639 --> 00:14:47.799 And I'm not talking about the popular Netflix show, The Crown, but an even more sensational royal family story. 00:14:47.919 --> 00:14:49.279 So let's think about that next. 00:14:50.240 --> 00:14:51.759 The story of the crown. 00:14:51.759 --> 00:14:55.980 So, I don't know if you've probably heard this. 00:14:56.059 --> 00:14:57.279 It's been in the news a few times. 00:14:57.720 --> 00:15:04.480 But it's widely accepted that virtually everybody with British ancestry is descended from this man. 00:15:05.379 --> 00:15:08.000 King Edward III. 00:15:08.240 --> 00:15:10.059 And he reigned in the 14th century. 00:15:11.700 --> 00:15:16.240 Each one of us with British ancestry has a little bit of his DNA in us. 00:15:16.240 --> 00:15:18.720 And this is probably because he had loads of children. 00:15:19.480 --> 00:15:21.639 And those children went on to have loads more children. 00:15:23.879 --> 00:15:30.560 And to say that Jesus was descended from David doesn't actually mean all that much at first glance. 00:15:31.200 --> 00:15:37.299 There were many thousands of people in Jesus' day who could claim to be descendants of David. 00:15:38.360 --> 00:15:44.220 But Matthew's purpose is not to show us that Jesus is a blood relative of David. 00:15:44.220 --> 00:15:46.340 Even though he is. 00:15:47.019 --> 00:15:52.300 Matthew's purpose is to show the line of succession from David to Jesus. 00:15:53.259 --> 00:15:59.080 The legal right to the throne which had passed down over 1,000 years. 00:15:59.820 --> 00:16:03.480 Jesus is the legal heir to the throne of David. 00:16:04.379 --> 00:16:06.040 The seat of God's kingdom. 00:16:07.139 --> 00:16:10.580 This means that Jesus is the king over God's people today. 00:16:10.580 --> 00:16:21.940 God's people who encompass people from every nation around the world beyond the borders of Israel who have accepted Jesus as their king. 00:16:23.540 --> 00:16:26.740 And in any given kingdom there can only be one king. 00:16:27.240 --> 00:16:29.680 And we even know this to be true in the animal kingdom. 00:16:30.500 --> 00:16:33.340 There is only one dominant stag in the herd. 00:16:33.340 --> 00:16:37.100 There is only one queen bee in the hive. 00:16:38.240 --> 00:16:40.540 A human king may have many sons. 00:16:41.000 --> 00:16:42.759 But only one can be the successor. 00:16:43.620 --> 00:16:48.040 And this has led to many battles of succession down through history. 00:16:48.039 --> 00:16:55.179 But Matthew tells us that there is only one legitimate heir to God's throne. 00:16:55.779 --> 00:17:01.719 The Bible tells us that God has already chosen Jesus to be the king of his kingdom. 00:17:02.179 --> 00:17:04.119 And he has no rivals. 00:17:06.399 --> 00:17:12.339 But we're just going to look at three different ways, just very briefly, at how Matthew shows us, 00:17:12.339 --> 00:17:17.439 gives us some hints as to how Jesus is this legitimate heir. 00:17:18.879 --> 00:17:26.339 And the first hint is that he calls Jesus the Christ or the Messiah three times in this passage. 00:17:26.480 --> 00:17:27.500 We see it in verse 1. 00:17:27.759 --> 00:17:30.359 We see it in verse 16 and 17 at the end. 00:17:31.079 --> 00:17:33.980 Now, Christ is not Jesus' second name. 00:17:34.939 --> 00:17:38.980 But it is the Greek translation of the word Messiah. 00:17:39.379 --> 00:17:42.279 And Messiah means the anointed one. 00:17:43.240 --> 00:17:50.000 Now, there were many judges and kings and prophets who were anointed to be the leaders of God's people. 00:17:51.139 --> 00:17:55.279 But Jesus is the capital A anointed one. 00:17:55.980 --> 00:18:01.039 He is God's chosen one to be the king over his people forever. 00:18:01.959 --> 00:18:02.859 That's the first hint. 00:18:02.859 --> 00:18:09.299 The second hint that we see in verse 6 is that Matthew calls David the king. 00:18:10.139 --> 00:18:12.159 He calls David the king. 00:18:12.679 --> 00:18:17.159 There are many other Jewish kings listed in this genealogy. 00:18:17.619 --> 00:18:19.220 But only David is named king. 00:18:19.779 --> 00:18:20.379 It's interesting. 00:18:21.419 --> 00:18:22.480 Well, why might that be? 00:18:22.939 --> 00:18:27.339 Well, we know that David was probably the greatest king of the nation. 00:18:27.519 --> 00:18:29.519 He was a faithful king to God. 00:18:29.519 --> 00:18:36.519 But Matthew wants his readers to see this close connection between Jesus and David. 00:18:37.180 --> 00:18:40.440 He wants us to see that Jesus has come from David's line. 00:18:40.440 --> 00:18:48.640 So when Matthew labels David as the king, this should be making our 2 Samuel chapter 7 alarm bells ringing. 00:18:49.100 --> 00:18:52.019 That promise that God made to David. 00:18:52.019 --> 00:18:58.119 Jesus is that promise that David is the king of David who would rule forever. 00:18:58.119 --> 00:19:04.119 Now, the third hint that we see, and it's the way that David constructs his genealogy. 00:19:04.679 --> 00:19:06.539 And you might have seen this in verse 7. 00:19:06.659 --> 00:19:11.859 But he's deliberately constructed it so that there are 14 generations between Abraham and David. 00:19:12.000 --> 00:19:15.759 There are 14 generations between David and the deportation to Babylon. 00:19:15.759 --> 00:19:20.640 And there are 14 generations between Babylon and the birth of Jesus. 00:19:21.599 --> 00:19:22.339 Why 14? 00:19:22.740 --> 00:19:24.140 Well, this is a little bit technical. 00:19:25.000 --> 00:19:28.980 And Graham will probably pick me up on this for going a bit too technical on you this morning. 00:19:29.740 --> 00:19:34.240 But in the Hebrew language, there are certain numbers of Uriah. 00:21:11.440 --> 00:21:17.880 Matthew reminds us that David bore his son Solomon through a woman who belonged to another man. 00:21:17.880 --> 00:21:29.260 A man that David had murdered to cover up the adultery that he had committed with Bathsheba. 00:21:30.140 --> 00:21:33.220 Now, David's sins in this affair, they were utterly dreadful. 00:21:33.760 --> 00:21:34.800 And they were that David was also a dreadful sinner. 00:21:55.180 --> 00:22:00.579 Then in verse 10, we see a man called Manasseh. 00:22:01.579 --> 00:22:03.980 And he was a particularly wicked king. 00:22:03.980 --> 00:22:10.860 In the book of 2 Chronicles, it tells us that Manasseh worshipped idols, other gods. 00:22:11.279 --> 00:22:14.599 He erected altars to them in God's holy temple. 00:22:15.680 --> 00:22:22.299 And he even burned his own children as offerings to these other gods. 00:22:24.059 --> 00:22:33.400 Scripture tells us that Manasseh led God's people astray to do more evil than the nations that he had driven out of the land before them. 00:22:33.400 --> 00:22:39.060 Even the Gentiles over the borders were gasping when they heard about Manasseh's sins. 00:22:40.440 --> 00:22:47.840 Why would Jesus enter into such a family with such a formidable track record for sin? 00:22:48.800 --> 00:22:56.080 Why would he enter into a human race bent on serving other gods and
