And the fifth book is the last book. 00:00:42.060 --> 00:00:55.620 And it's usually associated with a period of time where the exiles returned to Israel and looked forward to the restoration of Israel and the fulfillment of God's promises to David. 00:00:55.619 --> 00:01:03.920 The Psalms were the songbook of Israel, songs that they sung to worship God. 00:01:05.920 --> 00:01:14.500 At our house, we often sing from a hymnal. And I try to explain slowly what the language means. 00:01:16.039 --> 00:01:20.700 Because often these older hymns, they have language that's out of date. 00:01:20.700 --> 00:01:34.640 Sometimes even in hymns I know and love, I come across words or sometimes even entire verses where I need to guess or Google what the meaning is. 00:01:35.920 --> 00:01:40.840 And I think today's Psalm, Psalm 110, would have been kind of like that for the Israelites. 00:01:41.079 --> 00:01:42.400 I invite you to turn there now. 00:01:42.400 --> 00:01:43.219 Psalm 110. 00:01:43.219 --> 00:01:52.659 It's a Psalm Nisa read just now. 00:01:55.599 --> 00:02:01.140 My Bible has very sticky pages, so if you'll excuse me. 00:02:02.480 --> 00:02:03.420 Psalm 110. 00:02:04.480 --> 00:02:12.520 It's written by King David, who's looking forward in this Psalm to the Messiah, the Savior of Israel. 00:02:13.219 --> 00:02:17.060 It celebrates the Messiah and celebrates his future victories. 00:02:17.740 --> 00:02:18.539 And that's clear. 00:02:18.659 --> 00:02:28.599 But as we go through each verse, I suspect that for the Israelites even, things would have been confusing, even to that original audience. 00:02:30.180 --> 00:02:32.699 Part of that's the expectations that Israel would have had. 00:02:32.699 --> 00:02:42.620 When the Psalter was compiled, the Israelites would have been looking forward to a kingdom with sovereignty and prosperity like they had under King David. 00:02:43.219 --> 00:02:47.439 But God's plan of salvation was greater than that. 00:02:47.840 --> 00:02:56.159 God's plan of salvation was perfect, promising a king and a kingdom that went far beyond Israel's expectations. 00:02:58.240 --> 00:03:01.180 God's plan of salvation is fulfilled in Jesus. 00:03:01.180 --> 00:03:10.340 And today I'd like us to see what this Psalm says about Jesus and to worship Jesus for his greatness and perfections. 00:03:10.540 --> 00:03:16.599 I've got five points if you've got your 00:04:53.719 --> 00:05:02.359 From my understanding, in formal situations, Prince William and Princess Catherine must refer to queen consort Camilla, 00:05:02.519 --> 00:05:06.079 who's their stepmother, mother-in-law, as your majesty. 00:05:06.079 --> 00:05:11.839 But when Charles passes away, William will be king. 00:05:12.399 --> 00:05:20.180 At which point, Camilla will refer to her stepson and stepdaughter-in-law as your majesty. 00:05:21.439 --> 00:05:23.539 That seems funny to me. 00:05:23.620 --> 00:05:27.879 It seems odd to refer to your stepson as your majesty. 00:05:27.879 --> 00:05:32.159 And here in our text today, there's something similarly odd. 00:05:32.459 --> 00:05:33.219 Look at verse 1. 00:05:34.540 --> 00:05:35.680 Verse 1, it says, 00:05:35.819 --> 00:05:37.719 The Lord says to my Lord, 00:05:39.100 --> 00:05:42.980 Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool. 00:05:45.360 --> 00:05:48.120 In this first verse, we've got two characters. 00:05:48.399 --> 00:05:53.420 There's the Lord with it being in all caps L-O-R-D. 00:05:53.420 --> 00:05:54.800 That's referring to God. 00:05:54.800 --> 00:06:00.460 When you see that L-O-R-D, that's God's covenant name, the I am who I am. 00:06:01.400 --> 00:06:02.620 So God is speaking. 00:06:03.580 --> 00:06:10.100 And he says to my Lord, someone who David refers to as his Lord. 00:06:11.920 --> 00:06:20.800 This is a psalm about the Messiah, the Davidic king promised to David in 2 Samuel chapter 7, 00:06:20.800 --> 00:06:22.240 where it says in verse 12, 00:06:23.439 --> 00:06:27.280 When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, 00:06:27.400 --> 00:06:29.439 I will raise up your offspring after you, 00:06:29.900 --> 00:06:33.080 who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 00:06:33.840 --> 00:06:38.480 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 00:06:39.340 --> 00:06:45.740 So, in 2 Samuel, it says that the Messiah was to be the son of David. 00:06:45.740 --> 00:06:52.660 Of course, King Solomon, Solomon's David's son and successor, 00:06:53.060 --> 00:06:58.439 he would go on to have a great time of great prosperity and build a physical temple in Jerusalem. 00:06:59.420 --> 00:07:05.579 But Israel's understanding and hope was that a future king in the line of David 00:07:05.579 --> 00:07:08.939 would come and establish an eternal kingdom. 00:07:08.939 --> 00:07:16.180 And it's that king, that savior, that God is speaking to in verse 1, 00:07:16.639 --> 00:07:19.399 and who David refers to as Lord. 00:07:21.060 --> 00:07:25.519 The word there, Lord, is often used to refer to God, 00:07:25.939 --> 00:07:31.560 and it's also used to refer to human beings when they occupy an important position. 00:07:31.560 --> 00:07:37.699 But in the Bible, referring to someone as Lord means that the person is greater than you. 00:07:38.280 --> 00:07:46.199 And so, if the Savior is David's son, it's striking and odd that David would refer to him as Lord. 00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:49.399 Now, that's not just my opinion. 00:07:49.500 --> 00:07:50.800 That was Jesus' opinion. 00:07:52.060 --> 00:07:57.660 Jesus asks the people in Jerusalem in Mark chapter 12, verse 35 to 37. 00:07:57.660 --> 00:08:01.960 If you want to turn there, Mark chapter 12. 00:08:09.540 --> 00:08:10.640 Verse 35. 00:08:11.800 --> 00:08:14.620 So, Jesus is talking in Jerusalem, and he says, 00:08:16.000 --> 00:08:19.640 How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? 00:08:20.040 --> 00:08:22.600 David himself and the Holy Spirit declared, 00:08:22.600 --> 00:08:27.840 The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet. 00:08:29.100 --> 00:08:32.040 Jesus asks, David himself calls him Lord. 00:08:32.500 --> 00:08:34.399 So, how is he his son? 00:08:38.960 --> 00:08:45.379 Jesus wants us to see that David knew that this Messiah would not only be from his family tree, 00:08:46.259 --> 00:08:47.899 but would be much greater than him. 00:08:47.899 --> 00:08:54.519 On top of that, on top of how striking it is that David calls the Messiah Lord, 00:08:55.740 --> 00:09:00.439 it's striking that God tells the Messiah that he will sit at God's right hand. 00:09:01.799 --> 00:09:04.779 The right hand is a position of great authority. 00:09:08.360 --> 00:09:11.379 So, is this right hand just referring to the throne in Jerusalem? 00:09:12.699 --> 00:09:14.720 The author of Hebrews doesn't think so. 00:09:14.720 --> 00:09:20.639 In Hebrews chapter 1, talking about how Jesus is much greater than angels, 00:09:20.940 --> 00:09:24.340 the author asks in Hebrews chapter 1, verse 13, 00:09:25.440 --> 00:09:28.580 And to which of the angels has he, has God ever said, 00:09:29.259 --> 00:09:33.779 Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet? 00:09:33.779 --> 00:09:44.759 So, God telling the Messiah to sit at his right hand was more than just a call to a normal position of authority. 00:09:45.759 --> 00:09:51.699 The Messiah is here prophesied to be the one who will somehow be the son of David, 00:09:51.860 --> 00:09:54.759 but greater than David, and the king of God's people, 00:09:55.500 --> 00:09:58.879 but also occupy a position of even greater authority. 00:09:58.879 --> 00:10:01.059 How can that be? 00:10:03.059 --> 00:10:07.200 The New Testament tells us the Messiah is God. 00:10:07.419 --> 00:10:10.620 He is both truly God, God become flesh, 00:10:11.200 --> 00:10:15.179 and truly man, born in the family tree of David. 00:10:15.679 --> 00:10:17.779 He lived a perfect life, died and rose again, 00:10:18.100 --> 00:10:20.340 and as we declared, he ascended into heaven, 00:10:20.720 --> 00:10:23.019 and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. 00:10:23.019 --> 00:10:29.000 The right hand is not just the throne in Jerusalem, but the throne in heaven. 00:10:30.679 --> 00:10:32.460 Turn to Acts chapter 2. 00:10:35.240 --> 00:10:43.779 At Pentecost, David declares, verse 32 of Acts chapter 2, 00:10:43.779 --> 00:10:49.879 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we are all witnesses. 00:10:51.199 --> 00:10:53.799 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, 00:10:54.720 --> 00:10:57.639 and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, 00:10:58.039 --> 00:11:01.839 he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. 00:11:02.519 --> 00:11:06.779 For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, 00:11:06.779 --> 00:11:09.100 The Lord said to my Lord, 00:11:09.240 --> 00:11:12.799 Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool. 00:11:13.120 --> 00:11:16.919 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain 00:11:16.919 --> 00:11:20.220 that God has made him both Lord and Christ, 00:11:20.699 --> 00:11:22.519 this Jesus whom you crucified. 00:11:25.740 --> 00:11:29.279 People of Israel were looking forward to another David, 00:11:29.279 --> 00:11:33.519 but in Psalm 110, God tells us that the Messiah 00:11:33.519 --> 00:11:36.860 will not just be another David, but greater than David. 00:11:38.879 --> 00:11:39.919 What about us? 00:11:41.139 --> 00:11:43.079 What kind of Savior are we looking for? 00:11:43.860 --> 00:11:47.679 Do we find ourselves looking for mere Davids? 00:11:48.600 --> 00:11:51.980 Or are we worshiping and trusting the greater David? 00:11:53.759 --> 00:11:57.039 There are so many, to use Tim Keller's language, 00:11:57.039 --> 00:12:02.439 counterfeit saviors that we are tempted to put our trust in. 00:12:03.120 --> 00:12:08.299 Whether it's political figures, celebrities, or spiritual leaders. 00:12:09.339 --> 00:12:13.199 We have to know that there's only one true Savior, Jesus Christ. 00:12:13.599 --> 00:12:15.480 And Jesus calls us to believe in him. 00:12:16.459 --> 00:12:19.279 He said to his disciples in John chapter 14, verse 1, 00:12:20.279 --> 00:12:21.620 before he died, he said, 00:12:21.879 --> 00:12:23.379 Let not your hearts be troubled. 00:12:23.579 --> 00:12:24.179 Believe in God. 00:12:24.319 --> 00:12:26.279 Believe also in me. 00:12:27.039 --> 00:12:32.379 And today, church, may we stop looking for Davids, 00:12:32.879 --> 00:12:35.799 but worship and trust in the greater David. 00:12:37.339 --> 00:12:40.279 Jesus is greater than a human Savior. 00:12:42.679 --> 00:12:46.839 Point two, Jesus is a perfect king. 00:12:46.840 --> 00:12:53.780 King David's reign was a golden age in the time of Israel. 00:12:54.300 --> 00:12:58.940 It was marked with great prosperity and many victories over Israel's enemies. 00:13:00.240 --> 00:13:02.500 However, his reign was not always a happy one. 00:13:02.500 --> 00:13:06.960 As an example, at one point, David's son Absalom, 00:13:07.519 --> 00:13:08.340 it says in the Bible, 00:13:08.340 --> 00:13:09.980 he stole the hearts of the men of Israel 00:13:09.980 --> 00:13:12.059 and started a rebellion, 00:13:12.399 --> 00:13:16.340 which resulted in a battle which took out the lives of 200,000, 00:13:16.960 --> 00:13:19.100 no, 20,000 men in Israel, 00:13:19.480 --> 00:13:21.279 including David's own son. 00:13:21.279 --> 00:13:26.779 David's reign, while very impressive, was imperfect. 00:13:28.220 --> 00:13:30.399 Jesus' reign is perfect, 00:13:31.039 --> 00:13:32.839 and he is the perfect king. 00:13:32.840 --> 00:13:36.759 What does a perfect reign look opposition parties 00:14:10.080 --> 00:14:11.840 and conflict with other countries, 00:14:12.700 --> 00:14:16.019 if he had cooperation from his caucus, 00:14:16.360 --> 00:14:18.280 from the provinces and the general public, 00:14:19.560 --> 00:14:21.680 and if his work as prime minister 00:14:21.680 --> 00:14:24.460 was seen as energetic and productive. 00:14:24.840 --> 00:14:27.460 Well, here in Psalm 110, 00:14:28.360 --> 00:14:30.620 David describes the Messiah's reign. 00:14:32.060 --> 00:14:34.280 Look at verses 1 to 3. 00:14:35.660 --> 00:14:36.100 It says, 00:14:36.200 --> 00:14:37.379 The Lord said to my Lord, 00:14:38.460 --> 00:14:39.860 Sit at my right hand 00:14:39.860 --> 00:14:42.519 until I make your enemies your footstool. 00:14:43.700 --> 00:14:47.000 The Lord sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. 00:14:47.560 --> 00:14:49.080 Rule in the midst of your enemies. 00:14:50.560 --> 00:14:52.840 Your people will offer themselves freely 00:14:52.840 --> 00:15:12.500 is of the Messiah reigning with success, 00:15:13.500 --> 00:15:14.339 a perfect king. 00:15:15.939 --> 00:15:17.979 He has victory over his enemies. 00:15:18.379 --> 00:15:21.019 Verse 1 says that God will make the Messiah's enemies 00:15:21.019 --> 00:15:22.139 his footstool. 00:15:22.139 --> 00:15:23.439 He'll put them under his feet. 00:15:24.879 --> 00:15:29.259 And verse 2 says that his reign will extend from Jerusalem. 00:15:29.960 --> 00:15:32.299 The scepter will go out from Zion. 00:15:33.960 --> 00:15:35.980 And David says to the Messiah, 00:15:36.679 --> 00:15:38.500 Rule in the midst of your enemies. 00:15:38.500 --> 00:15:42.340 So the Messiah's reign will not be stopped by opposition. 00:15:44.580 --> 00:15:47.879 Also, the Messiah will have complete allegiance from his people. 00:15:48.440 --> 00:15:54.080 Verse 3 says that the people will offer themselves freely to the Messiah. 00:15:54.080 --> 00:16:01.680 One commentator describes it as a host of volunteers rallying to their leader in a holy war. 00:16:04.180 --> 00:16:07.480 And the Messiah himself will reign with youthful vigor. 00:16:09.160 --> 00:16:12.139 Verse 3 says that in holy --> 00:16:25.580 the New Living Translation paraphrases it, 00:16:25.680 --> 00:16:27.520 you are arrayed in holy garments, 00:16:28.100 --> 00:16:30.300 and your strength will be renewed each day 00:16:30.300 --> 00:16:31.600 like the morning dew. 00:16:32.160 --> 00:16:34.080 The picture is of a king who reigns 00:16:34.080 --> 00:16:35.320 with vitality, 00:16:35.700 --> 00:16:36.800 with energy, 00:16:37.040 --> 00:16:37.639 and with vigor. 00:16:39.240 --> 00:16:40.720 So that's victory, 00:16:41.259 --> 00:16:41.660 allegiance, 00:16:41.820 --> 00:16:42.440 vitality. 00:16:42.780 --> 00:16:44.540 Is that what we think of when we think of Jesus? 00:16:45.180 --> 00:16:46.960 When we think of Jesus' reign? 00:16:47.080 --> 00:16:52.360 We Christians today live in what every knee will bow 00:16:59.759 --> 00:17:01.879 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, 00:17:02.780 --> 00:17:04.579 and when we'll live with Jesus, 00:17:04.940 --> 00:17:06.440 who will be the light that fills 00:17:06.440 --> 00:17:07.500 the world 00:17:07.500 --> 00:17:08.700 forever and ever. 00:17:10.140 --> 00:17:10.620 But, 00:17:10.759 --> 00:17:11.720 in the meanwhile, 00:17:26.600 and around our children 00:17:26.600 --> 00:17:29.900 who attempt to draw us away from Jesus. 00:17:30.220 --> 00:17:31.519 We're tempted to believe that 00:17:31.519 --> 00:17:33.279 maybe Jesus is sleeping, 00:17:33.840 --> 00:17:35.460 or at least unproductive. 00:17:35.460 --> 00:17:38.460 But King Jesus reigns, 00:17:38.460 --> 00:17:39.400 and he works, 00:17:39.519 --> 00:17:40.559 and he's for us 00:17:40.559 --> 00:17:42.279 in this age right now. 00:17:43.079 --> 00:17:44.759 All authority in heaven and on earth 00:17:44.759 --> 00:17:46.340 has been given to
