Canadians would say, and that a lot of us Christians struggle with. 00:00:58.399 --> 00:01:00.340 Isn't the Bible full of contradictions? 00:01:01.399 --> 00:01:04.039 Today, we're going to begin the Gospel of Mark. 00:01:04.599 --> 00:01:09.019 And in fact, you want to turn in your Bibles to Mark chapter 1, verses 1 to 13. 00:01:09.159 --> 00:01:10.039 You could do that now. 00:01:10.840 --> 00:01:12.840 And so we're going to read Mark. 00:01:13.039 --> 00:01:18.240 And when we come to different parts of Mark, you'll notice some of you who know the Bible really well, 00:01:18.239 --> 00:01:24.439 or those of you who might sort of flip around later on, you'll see that Mark says some things differently than other people. 00:01:25.259 --> 00:01:28.739 For instance, Mark is going to tell us about the baptism of Jesus. 00:01:28.959 --> 00:01:34.819 Well, all four of the ancient biographies about Jesus, known, we call them Gospels, 00:01:34.879 --> 00:01:38.079 but they're the ancient biographies based on eyewitness testimony, 00:01:38.079 --> 00:01:44.219 that the four different Gospel accounts, if you read them, there's some differences in them. 00:01:45.000 --> 00:01:51.480 Three of the different accounts record the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness. 00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:54.519 And if you read them, you'll notice some differences. 00:01:55.819 --> 00:02:23.659 --> 00:02:25.759 And some of you might not know, but I have nine children. 00:02:25.759 --> 00:02:34.519 So whether it's during the funeral or afterwards, we have a time when the children and the sons and daughters-in-law 00:02:34.519 --> 00:02:39.280 and some of the older grandchildren can talk a little bit about what Louise was like. 00:02:39.939 --> 00:02:43.399 To some of you, most people would find that interesting. 00:02:44.019 --> 00:02:49.319 But I'm not going to let all nine and the seven sons and daughters-in-law get up and the older grandchildren. 00:02:49.519 --> more in particular the private sort of things, you know, 00:03:18.240 --> 00:03:23.819 that would take place late at night or talking about some of the deep things that have been going on in their severe handicaps, but is really just drawn to them and is very friendly to them. 00:04:17.959 --> 00:04:24.300 And so that person gets up and shares about Louise primarily in terms of those types of the incident, 00:06:33.639 --> 00:06:36.259 they look in a sense at all four of the things of the baptism 00:06:36.259 --> 00:06:38.399 or all three of the temptations. 00:06:38.479 --> 00:06:41.419 In a sense, they give you an overall view of all of them. 00:06:42.019 --> 00:06:44.099 Generally speaking, when I go through the Gospel of Mark, 00:06:44.139 --> 00:06:45.139 I'm not going to do that. 00:06:45.179 --> 00:06:46.599 I'm just going to read Mark's account. 00:06:46.600 --> 00:06:52.080 I want us to hear and get the sense of how Mark wants to introduce Jesus to us. 00:06:52.600 early 50s, 00:07:11.700 --> 00:07:13.939 zero 50s, not 1950s. 00:07:13.939 --> 00:07:16.899 And it's based on eyewitness testimony. 00:07:17.879 --> 00:07:20.139 And Mark is very self-appreciating, 00:07:20.219 --> 00:07:21.459 but there's a little thing at the end 00:07:21.459 --> 00:07:24.540 that shows that he was a direct eyewitness of some of these things, 00:07:24.660 --> 00:07:29.160 and he was a very close confidant of the apostles and the disciples. 00:07:29.379 --> 00:07:31.879 And so this is how he tells the story of Jesus, 00:07:32.120 --> 00:07:34.300 and he introduces it like this. 00:07:34.800 --> 00:07:35.420 Verse 1, 00:07:35.420 --> 00:07:44.199 Now, one of the things about Mark is he's brief. 00:07:44.300 --> 00:07:46.780 He's the shortest of all of the biographies by far. 00:07:47.379 --> 00:07:49.060 He's brief, and he gets to the point. 00:07:49.879 --> 00:07:54.319 Those of you who like one-page summaries of things will like Mark. 00:07:54.319 --> 00:07:59.659 Those of you who like Victorian novels with lots of description 00:07:59.659 --> 00:08:02.899 will find him frustrating time and time and time again. 00:08:03.480 --> 00:08:05.659 But if you like brief and to the point, 00:08:06.360 --> 00:08:08.480 you're going to love the Gospel of Mark. 00:08:09.000 --> 00:08:10.399 And here you have, first of all, 00:08:10.620 --> 00:08:12.459 this one sentence is very packed. 00:08:12.560 --> 00:08:14.740 First of all, notice that he makes a direct claim 00:08:14.740 --> 00:08:16.480 that Jesus is God, the Son of God. 00:08:16.560 --> 00:08:19.459 A direct claim that he is God, the Son of God. 00:08:19.819 --> 00:08:21.600 But the other thing here, it's a bit more subtle, 00:08:21.600 --> 00:08:24.080 and those of you who know the Bible very well 00:08:24.080 --> 00:08:24.960 might have picked it up, 00:08:25.020 --> 00:08:27.480 and it's actually very obvious in the original language. 00:08:28.200 --> 00:08:31.520 When Mark says the beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, 00:08:31.620 --> 00:08:32.540 that word beginning, 00:08:33.540 --> 00:08:35.680 so originally it would have been written in Greek. 00:08:35.820 --> 00:08:38.100 When the ancient Jewish people, 00:08:38.460 --> 00:08:40.600 a couple of centuries before the birth of Jesus, 00:08:41.440 --> 00:08:43.620 because Greek was the language, 00:08:43.620 --> 00:08:47.879 sort of the common language of most of that part of the ancient world, 00:08:47.879 --> 00:08:51.740 they took what we call the Old Testament 00:08:51.740 --> 00:08:53.419 and our Jewish friends call the Tanakh, 00:08:53.519 --> 00:08:56.200 they took it and translated it into Greek 00:08:56.200 --> 00:08:57.820 because there were a lot of Jewish people 00:08:57.820 --> 00:09:00.220 who could no longer read or speak Hebrew. 00:09:00.700 --> 00:09:02.980 And they still wanted them to have the Tanakh, 00:09:03.080 --> 00:09:04.240 the Torah, God's Word. 00:09:04.820 --> 00:09:06.559 And so they translated it into Greek. 00:09:06.879 --> 00:09:09.100 This is done before there were Christians. 00:09:09.700 --> 00:09:14.360 And so if you were to go and read the 00:09:21.460 And Mark's Gospel begins the beginning 00:09:21.460 --> 00:09:23.940 of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 00:09:23.940 --> 00:09:26.340 And the word beginning is the same in both cases. 00:09:26.940 --> 00:09:30.360 So what Mark is signifying here in a very, very simple way 00:09:30.360 --> 00:09:33.759 is that God is going to do a new creation. 00:09:35.200 --> 00:09:37.139 He made the original creation. 00:09:37.600 --> 00:09:40.100 The original creation has been marred by sin 00:09:40.100 --> 00:09:42.200 and death has come, evil has come. 00:09:42.200 --> 00:09:46.560 And in this now marred and disfigured original creation, 00:09:46.700 --> 00:09:48.140 God is going to do a new creation. 00:09:48.960 --> 00:09:51.080 And this is the beginning of this
