This is the last week of his life. 00:00:20.080 --> 00:00:26.780 He's preparing his disciples for what is coming, which is both the reality of his crucifixion and his resurrection, 00:00:26.780 --> 00:00:35.620 but also the mission then that he will leave them with to bear witness to him in the world. 00:00:36.620 --> 00:00:43.500 And so we'll see as we look at this passage this morning, Jesus exposes a problem that the disciples may face, 00:00:43.900 --> 00:00:52.560 a provision that he is promising, and then we'll look for a few minutes at what that provision will produce in our lives. be the only word at the end of a paragraph, 00:03:49.400 --> 00:03:53.760 or the only line at the bottom of the page starting a new paragraph, 00:03:54.200 --> 00:03:57.099 word will automatically --> 00:04:32.439 during this pandemic, 00:04:32.439 --> 00:04:36.879 because during the pandemic, we have been isolated, alone, 00:04:37.339 --> 00:04:41.819 left as the dangling line at the bottom of the page in many ways. 00:04:41.819 --> 00:04:44.800 And we feel that, don't we? 00:04:45.540 --> 00:04:47.699 We know that in many ways. 00:04:48.279 --> 00:04:52.279 Some of us have literally been left as orphans in this world 00:04:52.279 --> 00:04:54.459 because COVID has taken their parents. 00:04:55.399 --> 00:05:01.659 Many of us have felt the pain of separation and distance and isolation. 00:05:02.699 --> 00:05:06.899 And some of it has also felt like abandonment, 00:05:07.100 --> 00:05:10.039 that even when we've been able to see some people, 00:05:10.040 --> 00:05:13.100 many who we gonna do it on your own. 00:08:16.639 --> 00:08:20.839 And maybe the disciples felt abandoned, 00:08:21.439 --> 00:08:22.879 orphaned in that sense too. 00:08:23.719 --> 00:08:25.039 Like your high school teacher, 00:08:25.139 --> 00:08:25.419 it says, 00:08:25.539 --> 00:08:27.740 I want you to go write a six-page paper 00:08:27.740 --> 00:08:29.079 and tell me everything 00:08:29.079 --> 00:08:30.599 that is important to know 00:08:30.599 --> 00:08:31.779 about the country of China. 00:08:32.720 --> 00:08:33.899 It's history, it's culture, 00:08:34.039 --> 00:08:35.299 it's language, it's politics, 00:08:35.460 --> 00:08:36.039 it's economics. 00:08:37.299 --> 00:08:38.620 It's an overwhelming task. 00:08:38.679 --> 00:08:39.879 How could I even begin 00:08:39.879 --> 00:08:41.480 Christian lives, 00:08:50.419 --> 00:08:52.659 particularly when we take it seriously, 00:08:52.980 --> 00:08:54.419 we feel the same burden. 00:08:54.539 --> 00:08:56.059 How could we ever do that? 00:08:56.980 --> 00:08:58.559 It's overwhelming and defeating. 00:08:59.960 --> 00:09:02.199 Our failures then define us, 00:09:02.460 --> 00:09:03.980 our weakness defeats us, 00:09:04.120 --> 00:09:05.519 and we often despair. 00:09:07.199 --> 00:09:09.240 And we despair not only of trying, 00:09:09.240 --> 00:09:11.199 but we despair of God himself. 00:09:12.319 --> 00:09:13.340 This is a Father, 00:09:41.679 --> 00:09:43.559 and he will give you another helper 00:09:43.559 --> 00:09:45.080 to be with you forever, 00:09:45.259 --> 00:09:46.600 even the spirit of truth. 00:09:48.419 --> 00:09:49.279 Jesus says, 00:09:49.419 --> 00:09:50.759 I will not leave you alone, 00:09:50.840 --> 00:09:52.659 but I will send another one, 00:09:53.100 --> 00:09:54.679 another helper to come alongside. 00:09:55.179 --> 00:09:56.759 Now, many of you probably know this, 00:09:56.799 --> 00:09:58.659 but the Greek word there is paraclete. 00:09:59.019 --> 00:10:00.080 And it's good to know 00:10:00.080 --> 00:10:02.240 because it's not an easy word to translate. 00:10:02.240 --> 00:10:06.600 Comforter, helper, teacher, guide, friend, advocate, counselor 00:10:06.600 --> 00:10:09.200 are all different English translations 00:10:09.200 --> 00:10:13.560 that try to get at what that word means. 00:10:14.080 --> 00:10:16.080 And all of them capture some of it. 00:10:16.620 --> 00:10:44.580 First of all, 00:10:44.720 --> 00:10:45.740 we see in verse 16 00:10:45.740 --> 00:10:47.480 that he is not just a helper, 00:10:47.620 --> 00:10:48.940 but he is another helper. 00:10:55.519 How has he helped them? 00:10:55.960 --> 00:10:57.340 He has spoken truth to them. 00:10:57.340 --> 00:10:59.060 He has encouraged their hearts. 00:10:59.220 --> 00:11:00.379 He has but he's saying, 00:11:17.779 --> 00:11:18.879 you're not going to lose 00:11:18.879 --> 00:11:19.680 what you've gotten 00:11:19.680 --> 00:11:20.779 from me being with you 00:11:20.779 --> 00:11:22.279 because I'm going to send another one 00:11:22.279 --> 00:11:24.220 like me to come alongside. 00:11:24.659 --> 00:11:27.019 And not only am I going to send one like me, 00:11:27.019 --> 00:11:53.639 But in the New Testament, 00:11:53.639 --> 00:11:54.639 the promise is that 00:11:54.639 --> 00:11:56.620 he will come and be with us forever. 00:11:56.620 --> 00:12:01.879 He will be a spiritual help 00:12:01.879 --> 00:12:04.200 that the world cannot receive 00:12:04.200 --> 00:12:05.840 nor see nor understand. 00:12:06.039 --> 00:12:07.259 What in the world does that mean? 00:12:07.740 --> 00:12:09.539 Well, remember in John's gospel, 00:12:09.679 --> 00:12:11.960 the world is the system 00:12:11.960 --> 00:12:13.379 that has rejected Jesus 00:12:13.379 --> 00:12:16.560 and rejects God. 00:12:17.179 --> 00:12:19.799 And so what Jesus is saying is 00:12:19.799 --> 00:12:21.259 the Holy Spirit, God himself, 00:12:21.360 --> 00:12:22.600 is going to come to the world 00:12:22.600 --> 00:12:24.299 and of course they're not going to receive it. 00:12:24.500 --> 00:12:25.340 They're not going to see it. 00:12:25.340 --> 00:12:26.639 They're not going to understand
