--> 00:01:43.459 What makes us different? 00:01:44.340 --> 00:01:46.759 In chapter one, we thought about the Christian individual. 00:01:46.760 --> 00:01:52.480 But in chapter five, this evening, we're going to be thinking about the whole of the church community. 00:01:52.780 --> 00:01:56.980 And Paul tells the church to be a countercultural community. 00:01:58.219 --> 00:02:01.280 This evening, Paul is saying, be countercultural. 00:02:02.280 --> 00:02:05.000 So in chapter one, you see the marks of a Christian. 00:02:05.860 --> 00:02:09.620 Chapters two and three, Paul outlines his own ministry to the Thessalonians 00:02:09.620 --> 00:02:13.219 and a report that Timothy brought back to him of how they're getting on. 00:02:14.039 --> 00:02:18.700 Paul was so happy to receive this news because he'd been praying for them, 00:02:19.020 --> 00:02:22.939 almost having those nail-biting moments, figuring out how they're doing. 00:02:23.700 --> 00:02:26.340 And then Timothy comes back and says they're doing well. 00:02:26.560 --> 00:02:27.580 And he rejoices. 00:02:27.580 --> 00:02:35.820 And then chapters four and five, Paul is addressing things that Timothy may have reported as being slightly off 00:02:35.820 --> 00:02:40.040 or things that the Thessalonians were doing, but they should continue to grow in. 00:02:40.980 --> 00:02:45.240 And all of this is to be done in anticipation of the return of Jesus Christ. 00:02:46.020 --> 00:02:49.080 So we started about thinking of the Christian individual. 00:02:49.720 --> 00:02:55.980 And now we think about the marks of a church, what it means to be a countercultural community. 00:02:55.979 --> 00:03:03.120 And everything in this letter shows that a Christian is fundamentally different from those around us. 00:03:03.959 --> 00:03:09.979 I'd like to do something slightly different this evening by starting off by putting this whole passage 00:03:09.979 --> 00:03:13.359 in the context of Paul's wish and prayer for these Christians. 00:03:13.859 --> 00:03:17.739 So if you look at verses 23 and 24 with me, 00:03:19.099 --> 00:03:25.219 Paul reminds his original readers and us that the only way we can be countercultural, 00:03:25.219 --> 00:03:30.520 the only way we can be different in this society is because of God's power living within us. 00:03:31.620 --> 00:03:34.219 So there are three aspects to Paul's short prayer. 00:03:35.099 --> 00:03:40.219 Sanctification, the second coming of Jesus Christ and God's calling. 00:03:41.699 --> 00:03:48.740 Working out all of these things that Paul has been teaching in this letter is only possible 00:03:48.740 --> 00:03:51.360 because the Spirit of God dwelling within believers. 00:03:52.659 --> 00:03:56.780 And Paul is praying for their sanctification, meaning that they would grow in their holiness. 00:03:57.740 --> 00:04:05.100 Living a moral life and simply being a good person will not help you on that day when Jesus Christ returns. 00:04:06.480 --> 00:04:08.540 However, being in Jesus Christ's will. 00:04:08.539 --> 00:04:14.879 Being chosen and being called by God into his family, being transformed by the Holy Spirit 00:04:14.879 --> 00:04:18.539 is all working out God's will for your life. 00:04:19.480 --> 00:04:24.639 And because of Jesus' death on the cross, you will be blameless at his return if you are a Christian. 00:04:25.379 --> 00:04:31.539 So this is Paul's prayer and encouragement for the Thessalonians to live this countercultural lifestyle. 00:04:31.540 --> 00:04:36.660 Because they have been called by God, they are being sanctified by the Holy Spirit 00:04:36.660 --> 00:04:41.379 and because they are awaiting the return of Christ and they will be found blameless. 00:04:42.180 --> 00:05:50.980 --> 00:05:55.939 Our society today, generally speaking, has no regard for authority. 00:05:56.939 --> 00:05:59.520 People mock those in places of authority. 00:06:00.620 --> 00:06:05.319 Comedians get a good laugh out of us by ridiculing and pulling politicians down. 00:06:06.720 --> 00:06:11.240 But Paul says that Christians are to have good relationships with their leaders. 00:06:11.240 --> 00:06:13.780 And here he has elders in mind. 00:06:14.660 --> 00:06:19.120 So men who have devoted themselves to the teaching and training of a local church. 00:06:19.540 --> 00:06:32.579 And for the caring of a church by applying God's word. 00:06:32.579 --> 00:06:39.519 So in verse 12, Paul is encouraging the Thessalonians to have a right relationship with their leaders 00:06:39.519 --> 00:06:41.620 because of their work in the church. 00:06:42.819 --> 00:06:45.199 Now Paul isn't asking them politely to do these things. 00:06:46.419 --> 00:06:51.139 He is urging them, pushing them on, encouraging them to have this relationship with their leaders. 00:06:51.599 --> 00:06:58.740 And he draws out three categories for leaders and three attitudes that the whole church should have towards them. 00:06:58.740 --> 00:07:05.620 So the three categories of work for elders are those who work hard or labour, 00:07:06.439 --> 00:07:10.040 those who are over, and those labouring or working hard in verse 12 is a general principle, not just for elders. 00:07:23.860 --> 00:07:25.439 So we can't sit back and relax. 00:07:25.759 --> 00:07:28.699 This is for everybody, 00:07:45.519 --> 00:07:48.639 but it's better translated as those who are over you. 00:07:50.300 --> 00:07:54.040 Elders are not just those who sit in a meeting and discuss church life once a month. 00:07:54.040 --> 00:07:57.900 That is what they do, but their job is far more than that. 00:07:59.620 --> 00:08:03.080 They have a responsibility for each and every person under their care. 00:08:04.200 --> 00:08:11.200 It is their responsibility to give advice, to lead, to guide, to counsel people and to teach people. 00:08:11.199 --> 00:08:16.099 And all of this is to be done based on the Bible, on the Word of God. 00:08:16.100 --> 00:08:22.900 Now at Brunsfield, we have six elders, each of them with very busy lives, 00:08:23.379 --> 00:08:28.160 each of them working hard in jobs, in other ministries across the city, 00:08:28.160 --> 00:08:31.040 and each of them also have families that they're responsible for. 00:08:32.019 --> 00:08:36.200 Now I have the privilege of seeing some of these men in action day in, day out in the office. 00:08:36.660 --> 00:08:40.740 And I have the privilege of sitting in their elders meetings and seeing all of the works that they do. they work tirelessly for us here at Brunsfield. 00:08:54.820 --> 00:08:58.460 These men are responsible for how they teach us as a congregation. 00:08:58.779 --> 00:08:59.480 They are leaders. the Bible teaches about something, 00:09:08.320 --> 00:09:10.220 these are the men that we should be going to. 00:09:10.220 --> 00:09:16.160 These are the men who one day will have to give an account elder is someone who admonishes the church, meaning church discipline. 00:09:28.100 --> 00:09:31.120 Now church discipline isn't something we really like to think about today. 00:09:32.100 --> parents are afraid that saying no to their children might damage their relationship. 00:09:46.920 --> 00:09:53.960 People feel that it is judgmental to tell someone that they're not living according to God's will for humanity. 00:09:55.100 --> 00:09:59.440 People have bought into this idea that there is no such thing as objective truth. 00:09:59.960 --> 00:10:02.320 But each person can pick and choose what they want. 00:10:02.320 --> 00:10:05.920 Everyone does what is right in their own eyes. 00:10:07.280 --> 00:10:10.860 And all of this is factored into a global lack of church discipline. 00:23:51.919 --> 00:23:53.700 Because a mob wanted him dead. 00:23:54.220 --> 00:23:55.700 Because of what he was preaching. 00:23:55.700 --> 00:23:59.180 And yet he still says to these people. 00:23:59.519 --> 00:24:00.120 Rejoice. 00:24:02.120 --> 00:24:05.740 Paul knows that everything is given from God. 00:24:06.680 --> 00:24:15.940 And Paul also knows that no persecution or trial is his first hospital visit. 00:26:14.819 --> 00:26:18.839 And he was taken aback because this woman was always smiling. 00:26:19.380 --> 00:26:20.200 She couldn't walk. 00:26:20.299 --> 00:26:21.380 She'd lost the use of her legs. 00:26:21.420 --> 00:26:22.700 But she was always smiling. 00:26:22.700 --> 00:26:28.759 She was thankful for the fact, she said, that she could sit up and read her Bible. 00:26:30.380 --> 00:26:33.420 So a few weeks go past and the man goes and visits again. 00:26:34.480 --> 00:26:36.819 And then she'd lost the use of her arms. 00:26:37.920 --> 00:26:41.480 And 00:28:11.539 --> 00:28:14.620 Firstly, it's referring to the work of sanctification. 00:28:14.980 --> 00:28:16.620 The work of us being made more holy. 00:28:17.820 --> 00:28:23.640 The Holy Spirit enables us to live out this counter-cultural life as a church community. 00:28:24.660 --> 00:28:28.240 The Holy Spirit is conforming us to the image of Jesus. 00:28:28.880 --> 00:28:30.820 Paul says, do not quench that work. 00:28:30.819 --> 00:28:38.279 Do not resist or do not try to hinder the work of the Holy Spirit in your life or in the life of others. 00:28:38.960 --> 00:28:40.359 But instead, be supportive. 00:28:40.799 --> 00:28:45.980 Be encouraging people to grow in their holiness by the power of the Spirit. 00:28:47.359 --> 00:28:51.119 And then secondly, the work of the Holy Spirit has to do with prophecy. 00:28:52.399 --> 00:28:55.899 And Paul says, do not treat such prophecies with content. 00:28:55.900 --> 00:29:02.220 In the original context of the Thessalonian church, we do not know what this prophecy looked like. 00:29:03.600 --> 00:29:09.340 But in a sense, we don't really need to know what it was like exactly because the teaching remains the same. 00:29:10.060 --> 00:29:12.240 Paul says, test everything. 00:29:13.740 --> 00:29:19.340 If it stands true according to the Bible, according to the word of God, let it be heard by the congregation. 00:29:19.339 --> 00:29:23.519 But if it does not stand up, then do not give it airtime. 00:29:25.720 --> 00:29:29.240 The Thessalonian church didn't have the New Testament as we have it today. 00:29:30.500 --> 00:29:37.179 They only had the Old Testament, but even that wasn't available for them to pick up and read at any time. 00:29:37.519 --> 00:29:41.279 And so God used prophecy to bring his word to his people. 00:29:41.279 --> 00:29:48.639 They would give instructions to the church, declarations about God and what he has done. 00:29:50.359 --> 00:29:52.879 Prophecies were to strengthen believers in their faith. 00:29:53.920 --> 00:29:58.399 Encourage believers as they face a world which hates them and their king, Jesus. 00:29:58.839 --> 00:30:02.240 And to comfort the discouraged and downtrodden. 00:30:03.420 --> 00:30:07.799 But it appears that there might have been those who despised these words and who didn't listen. 00:30:07.799 --> 00:30:14.639 And Paul is telling the whole church, listen to what people say, but test everything. 00:30:15.519 --> 00:30:20.359 God's word is one good, cohesive word and revelation of himself. 00:30:20.879 --> 00:30:22.680 It does not contradict itself. 00:30:24.139 --> 00:30:28.279 God's word is not changing just like God is not changing. 00:30:29.220 --> 00:30:32.919 Therefore, any word from God should be tested. 00:30:32.920 --> 00:30:46.740 Be like the Bereans who in Acts 17, when they hear the message of Jesus, accept it with great eagerness and examined the scriptures every single day to see if what Paul 00:32:13.160 God's word is truth. 00:32:13.160 --> 00:32:26.160 As Christians who have been set apart by God and for God through Jesus' death on the cross and who are being made more into the image of his son through the work of the Holy Spirit, we are being called to live countercultural lives. 00:32:26.160 --> 00:32:27.160 God's word is truth. 00:32:29.160 --> 00:32:31.160 But this doesn't come naturally to us. 00:32:31.160 --> 00:32:32.160 And it isn't easy. 00:32:32.160 --> 00:32:33.160 It isn't easy. 00:32:33.160 --> 00:32:34.160 It isn't a walk in the park. 00:32:34.160 --> 00:32:41.580 It's difficult to live with all of these relationships being perfect just as Paul describes they should be. 00:32:41.579 --> 00:32:46.059 But that is where the glorious truth of verse 24 comes in. 00:32:46.579 --> 00:32:49.259 God wants us to live this way. 00:32:49.259 --> 00:32:53.339 And the one who calls us is faithful and he will do it. 00:32:54.379 --> 00:33:02.660 And that means that
