Please take your copy of God's Word and join me in John chapter 6. 00:00:05.379 --> 00:00:35.359 Amen. 00:00:35.380 --> 00:00:41.800 There are seven places in John's Gospel that Jesus introduces himself as I am. 00:00:42.040 --> 00:00:49.340 Harkening back to that first introduction of God by name, the self-sufficient one. 00:00:49.980 --> 00:00:52.400 Then, followed by a metaphor. 00:00:52.700 --> 00:00:55.840 So, I am followed by a metaphor. 00:00:56.760 --> 00:01:01.340 Here he will say, I am the bread of life. 00:01:01.340 --> 00:01:05.480 Verse 35 and in verse 48. 00:01:06.500 --> 00:01:20.060 He'll go on in John's Gospel to call himself, I am the good shepherd, the vine, the way, the truth, the life, and the resurrection and the life. 00:01:20.060 --> 00:01:22.859 This is the first of those seven. 00:01:24.100 --> 00:01:36.840 This text also follows a literary theme in John's Gospel where a miracle is performed, in this case, two miracles, and then a discourse is recorded. 00:01:36.840 --> 00:01:42.120 We call this the bread of life discourse, this portion of it, at least this morning. 00:01:42.120 --> 00:01:49.280 We don't want to disconnect the words of Jesus from the activity of Jesus. 00:01:49.500 --> 00:01:52.620 In this case, it brings much to life in it. 00:01:52.719 --> 00:01:59.960 So, let's take our minds back to the beginning of the chapter for just a moment before we read the text together. 00:01:59.959 --> 00:02:07.319 At the beginning of the chapter, Jesus crosses the Sea of Galilee and a great crowd follows him. 00:02:07.679 --> 00:02:09.120 They're seeing him perform miracles. 00:02:09.459 --> 00:02:10.959 They think, this guy's amazing. 00:02:11.939 --> 00:02:20.699 They follow him to a remote place where Jesus miraculously feeds them from five barley loaves and two fish. 00:02:21.280 --> 00:02:27.340 See, there's 5,000 men, which means there's a multitude more than that, women and children. 00:02:27.340 --> 00:02:32.379 And there's two specific things I want us to remember from this text. 00:02:33.740 --> 00:02:39.219 First, it's literary structure, which is chiastic. 00:02:40.020 --> 00:02:44.379 It places verse 10 at the center of the episode. 00:02:44.560 --> 00:02:47.000 In case you have no idea what I'm talking about, I'll get to it. 00:02:47.060 --> 00:02:49.599 I'll explain what a chiasm is. 00:02:49.699 --> 00:02:55.539 But recall, back when we looked at this text together, verse 10, John 10, verse 10, 00:02:55.539 --> 00:03:00.039 there Jesus says, have the people sit down. 00:03:01.039 --> 00:03:06.919 And then John records, now there was much grass in the place. 00:03:07.579 --> 00:03:12.840 So, the men sat down, about 5,000 in number. 00:03:13.799 --> 00:03:18.340 And I drew your attention to this, this interesting little detail that John puts in there. 00:03:18.340 --> 00:03:23.200 It's not odd and out of place, but what's he trying to accomplish? 00:03:23.319 --> 00:03:29.640 What's he trying to picture for us as the entirety of John's gospel is chiastic? 00:03:29.780 --> 00:03:36.219 Chapter 6 corresponds with chapter 10, where Jesus calls himself the good shepherd. 00:03:37.120 --> 00:03:40.520 He's picturing for us Jesus as this one. 00:03:41.180 --> 00:03:43.860 Psalm 23 is where your mind ought to go. 00:03:43.860 --> 00:03:46.140 So, the psalmist says, the Lord is my shepherd. 00:03:46.920 --> 00:03:48.100 I shall not want. 00:03:48.800 --> 00:03:50.680 He makes me lie down in green pastures. 00:03:50.780 --> 00:03:52.620 He leads me beside still waters. 00:03:53.400 --> 00:03:55.580 He restores my soul. 00:03:56.200 --> 00:04:00.780 He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 00:04:01.220 --> 00:04:07.240 So, there's this picture of this good shepherd, right, providing plentifully for his people, 00:04:07.680 --> 00:04:09.700 giving him place of rest. 00:04:09.699 --> 00:04:17.319 But the psalmist very quickly makes this about the soul, this restoration of soul. 00:04:17.719 --> 00:04:19.860 So, it's being set up for us already. 00:04:19.979 --> 00:04:24.139 Everything that Jesus is going to say about himself as the bread of life. 00:04:24.199 --> 00:04:26.680 So, that's the first thing that's good to remember in this chapter. 00:04:28.339 --> 00:04:31.000 Secondly, verse 13 records, 00:04:31.000 --> 00:04:43.920 So, they gathered them up, the leftovers, and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten. 00:04:44.379 --> 00:04:48.259 So, there are twelve baskets because there are twelve apostles. 00:04:48.459 --> 00:04:51.139 Each one of them has a basket. 00:04:51.139 --> 00:04:59.759 And this may seem like a random bit of information, but I suggest to you, as I did in our previous study of this part of chapter six, 00:05:00.199 --> 00:05:11.240 that it is a bit of information that adds punctuation to the bread of life discourse as we study into the next miracle. 00:05:11.240 --> 00:05:21.460 Following the feeding of this great crowd, the disciples get into a boat and begin a journey back across the sea. 00:05:21.699 --> 00:05:23.639 But Jesus has yet to join them. 00:05:23.699 --> 00:05:26.040 He doesn't get in the boat with them. 00:05:26.120 --> 00:05:29.180 And while they're out on the sea, they encounter rough weather. 00:05:29.800 --> 00:05:34.220 And Jesus comes to them walking on the water. 00:05:34.720 --> 00:05:37.240 Now, do I believe this happened chronologically? 00:05:38.480 --> 00:05:39.860 Absolutely, I do. 00:05:39.860 --> 00:05:44.680 But here we see, in chapter six, a miracle of Jesus feeding five thousand, 00:05:44.960 --> 00:05:47.060 the emphasis being on the bread. 00:05:47.160 --> 00:05:52.759 Notice that the fish aren't even acknowledged in the taking up of leftovers. 00:05:53.879 --> 00:05:57.939 And then, he launches into the bread of life discourse. 00:05:58.080 --> 00:06:03.280 But in between the two, John records this particular miracle. 00:06:04.160 --> 00:06:05.240 Why? Why does he do that? 00:06:05.300 --> 00:06:07.100 Is he a stickler for chronology? 00:06:07.800 --> 00:06:08.740 I'd suggest not. 00:06:08.740 --> 00:06:17.120 In fact, all throughout John's gospel, he jumps over some rather notable stories in Jesus's life. 00:06:17.340 --> 00:06:18.240 So, why? 00:06:18.360 --> 00:06:20.819 Why does he show us this one? 00:06:21.879 --> 00:06:25.540 John chapter six, verse 20 and 21. 00:06:26.040 --> 00:06:30.519 Again, I hear verse 20 is the center of the chiastic structure. 00:06:30.639 --> 00:06:32.300 It's meant to draw our attention. 00:06:32.300 --> 00:06:36.480 They're afraid when they see him walking on the water, understandably. 00:06:36.600 --> 00:06:38.139 But he said to them, verse 20, 00:06:38.780 --> 00:06:40.980 It is I. 00:06:41.579 --> 00:06:44.199 And it would be a very fair translation. 00:06:44.400 --> 00:06:47.120 In fact, I wish it was translated this way. 00:06:48.000 --> 00:06:49.560 I am. 00:06:50.439 --> 00:06:52.660 Do not
