Do you understand the message of Christianity, the message of the Bible? 00:00:46.280 --> 00:00:55.340 Maybe you're new to church this morning, and you're thinking, well, I don't even know what it is yet. And that's fine. 00:02:27.340 Over the years, people have thought of the parables differently. 00:02:28.020 --> 00:02:35.599 Quite famously, St. Augustine looked at this parable and gave a very sort of allegorical interpretation. 00:02:35.599 --> 00:02:39.919 To be fair, he gave other interpretations in other works as well. 00:02:40.699 --> 00:02:42.579 But he's got all kinds of details. 00:02:42.840 --> 00:02:44.939 Like the inn is the church. 00:02:45.299 --> 00:02:47.519 And the innkeeper is the apostle Paul. 00:02:48.099 --> 00:02:49.719 And all kinds of details like that. 00:02:51.180 --> 00:02:53.759 And that seems to be pretty prevalent for a long time. 00:02:53.759 --> 00:02:57.739 But by now, people seem to think this is mainly about moral teaching. 00:02:57.959 --> 00:02:59.659 It's an example story. 00:03:00.219 --> 00:03:02.099 Telling this lawyer how he should live. 00:03:05.560 --> 00:03:11.819 Jesus, however, explains the purpose of the parables in this way in Luke 8, verse 10. 00:03:11.879 --> 00:03:15.959 If you want to just flip over to Luke 8, 10 on 8, 6, 5. 00:03:17.959 --> 00:03:19.979 The purpose of the parables, he says, 00:03:19.979 --> 00:03:23.479 To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God. 00:03:24.280 --> 00:03:32.120 But for others they are in parables, so that, seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. 00:03:34.280 --> 00:03:37.639 So that's echoing the words of the call given to the prophet Isaiah. 00:03:39.359 --> 00:03:42.579 And often when you see chunks with several parables stuck together, 00:03:43.000 --> 00:03:45.359 Jesus is repeatedly asking people to listen. 00:03:46.259 --> 00:03:48.039 Those who have ears to hear, hear. 00:03:48.039 --> 00:03:50.099 Listen, listen carefully. explains that parables start off like pictures, 00:04:37.699 --> 00:04:39.879 then become like mirrors, 00:04:40.839 --> 00:04:42.160 then become windows. 00:04:42.160 --> 00:04:44.980 Parables start arranges it by where Jesus is. 00:05:53.959 --> 00:05:56.479 And in 951, 00:05:56.579 --> 00:05:58.839 we have a key turning point in Luke's Gospel. 00:06:00.839 --> 00:06:03.259 When the days drew near for him to be taken up, 00:06:03.359 --> 00:06:06.120 he set his face to go to Jerusalem. 00:06:07.279 --> 00:06:09.500 And from that point in Luke, 00:06:10.079 --> 00:06:11.419 he is very definitely, 00:06:11.679 --> 00:06:12.379 very clearly, 00:06:12.560 --> 00:06:13.240 very deliberately, 00:06:13.659 --> 00:06:14.939 heading towards Jerusalem. 00:06:16.179 --> 00:06:18.139 He is on his way to the cross. 00:06:20.079 --> 00:06:21.979 So some people can explain that 00:06:21.980 --> 00:06:23.480 the shadow of the cross is now 00:06:23.480 --> 00:06:25.740 over the rest of the Gospel. 00:06:27.480 --> 00:06:28.960 So from that turning point, 00:06:29.140 --> 00:06:31.040 he has gone through a Samaritan village. 00:06:32.120 --> 00:06:34.379 And he has sent out 72 people in 00:06:57.060 And it's been subverting the order. 00:06:57.319 --> 00:06:58.220 It's been subverting 00:06:58.220 --> 00:07:00.040 the way people expect things to work. 00:07:00.860 --> 00:07:02.040 Magnificat. 00:07:16.420 --> 00:07:17.460 She's celebrating how 00:07:17.460 --> 00:07:19.160 God just gloriously works 00:07:19.160 --> 00:07:20.259 in tockly-turvy ways. 00:07:21.300 --> 00:07:23.280 The rich goes away empty 00:07:23.280 --> 00:07:24.460 and the humble is lifted 00:07:24.460 --> 00:07:27.100 and everything seems upside down 00:07:27.100 --> 00:07:28.139 from what you'd expect. 00:07:29.960 --> 00:07:31.439 And Jesus is praising God 00:07:31.439 --> 00:07:32.379 because that is exactly 00:07:32.379 --> 00:07:33.000 what's happening. 00:07:33.699 --> look, 00:08:01.259 --> 00:08:03.099 a lawyer stood up. 00:08:03.299 --> 00:08:04.319 Not like a solicitor 00:08:04.319 --> 00:08:05.439 or a barrister or anything. 00:08:06.159 --> 00:08:07.919 But probably an expert 00:08:07.919 --> 00:08:08.879 in Jewish law. 00:08:09.819 --> 00:08:11.099 Possibly one of the Pharisees. 00:08:12.459 --> 00:08:13.579 And standing would normally 00:08:13.579 --> 00:08:14.579 be a sign of respect. 00:08:14.959 --> 00:08:16.379 But he's not fooling Luke. 00:08:16.839 --> 00:08:18.319 He's not fooling the Holy Spirit 00:08:18.319 --> 00:08:19.279 inspiring him. 00:08:19.779 --> 00:08:20.399 Verse 25, 00:08:20.399 --> 00:08:22.079 he wants to put him 00:08:22.079 --> 00:08:22.959 to the test. 00:08:24.699 --> 00:08:25.679 And from that point, 00:08:25.779 --> 00:08:26.759 we have two cycles 00:08:26.759 --> 00:08:28.519 where the lawyer 00:08:28.519 --> 00:08:29.379 asks a question, 00:08:30.479 --> 00:08:31.839 then Jesus responds 00:08:31.839 --> 00:08:33.199 by asking a question himself, 00:08:34.059 --> 00:08:35.319 then the lawyer responds 00:08:35.319 --> 00:08:36.259 and Jesus responds. 00:08:37.279 --> 00:08:38.259 And then it happens again. 00:08:38.759 --> 00:08:39.840 Lawyer asks a question, 00:08:40.019 --> 00:08:41.039 Jesus asks a question, 00:08:41.500 --> 00:08:42.179 lawyer responds, 00:08:42.340 --> 00:08:42.959 Jesus responds. 00:08:43.299 --> 00:08:44.799 And the parable is the setup 00:08:44.799 --> 00:08:46.779 for Jesus' second question. 00:08:48.139 --> 00:08:48.860 So that's where we are. 00:08:48.860 -->
