continuing our study in the book of 2 Peter, 00:00:41.320 --> 00:00:43.920 and you'll remember that the book of 2 Peter is a letter. 00:00:44.000 --> 00:00:46.060 It's a letter written by a man named Peter, 00:00:46.519 --> 00:00:51.379 and he writes it to a church somewhere in the Roman Empire in the 60s AD, 00:00:51.539 --> 00:00:55.640 and he writes it with one hope, one goal, that they would grow. 00:00:56.679 --> 00:00:58.260 In fact, that's how he ends the book. 00:00:58.320 --> 00:01:03.700 In the very last verse, he commands them to grow in the grace and knowledge of their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. 00:01:04.140 --> 00:01:06.680 Remember, I'm telling you those are the two ways he wants them to grow. 00:01:06.760 --> 00:01:09.079 He wants them to grow in both grace and knowledge. 00:01:09.200 --> 00:01:12.079 Now, we talked a lot about grace in chapter 1. 00:01:12.460 --> 00:01:16.760 We are now in chapter 2, starting at verse 4, and we're talking about knowledge. 00:01:16.960 --> 00:01:22.520 Last week, we looked at the false teachers and the threat that these teachers make to knowledge. 00:01:22.519 --> 00:01:28.579 They were teaching things that were wrong, especially things that were wrong about the second coming, about Jesus' return. 00:01:28.699 --> 00:01:33.060 They are telling people Jesus is not actually going to come back to judge the world. 00:01:33.759 --> 00:01:38.620 We're going to continue that theme this morning as we turn to 2 Peter, 00:01:38.699 --> 00:01:40.459 and so I invite you to turn there with me now. 00:01:40.539 --> you will remember that I told you last week our application was to be the opposite of the false teachers. 00:01:54.299 --> 00:01:58.359 So the false teachers teach things that are not correct about Jesus' second coming. 00:01:58.459 --> 00:01:59.819 We want to teach what's correct. 00:01:59.819 --> 00:02:07.759 We want to make sure we're clear about the fact that Jesus is coming again to bring both judgment and salvation. 00:02:09.439 --> 00:02:15.620 So, of course, this is going to be something that touches on that very same doctrine. 00:02:15.719 --> 00:02:17.259 Now, I'll mention something as we're coming up. 00:02:17.780 --> 00:02:19.959 So I was looking at this passage, verses 4 through 10. 00:02:20.120 --> 00:02:22.500 I realized that I was trying to preach two sermons. through 10. 00:02:32.099 --> 00:02:34.719 There are some things, especially in verses 7 through 10, 00:02:34.919 --> 00:02:38.479 that I'm going to save and come back to this passage a second time. there's things that I don't touch on this morning, you'll know why, 00:02:54.520 --> 00:02:56.820 especially, I think one of them's in verse 5, 00:02:56.880 --> 00:02:59.300 but there's a lot of things going on in verse 7 through 10. 00:02:59.460 --> 00:03:02.120 This morning, we're just going to focus on two things, 00:03:02.219 --> 00:03:04.780 God's judgment and God's salvation. 00:03:05.879 --> 00:03:09.120 We're going to focus on God's judgment and God's salvation. 00:03:09.219 --> 00:03:11.420 And this is a follow-up to what happened last week, 00:03:11.439 --> 00:03:13.100 because as we talked about the false teachers, 00:03:13.180 --> 00:03:15.660 we were told at the very end, in verse 3, 00:03:16.660 --> 00:03:19.060 their condemnation from long ago is not idle, 00:03:19.219 --> 00:03:21.500 and their destruction is not asleep. 00:03:21.500 --> 00:03:25.479 In other words, Peter is reminding these people that while they're not seeing 00:03:25.479 --> 00:03:29.800 and experiencing judgment right now, it will still happen one day. 00:03:29.979 --> 00:03:34.819 And he needs to tell them this because this doctrine of Jesus coming back is under attack. 00:03:35.139 --> 00:03:37.659 And so there's two places these people might find themselves. 00:03:38.900 --> 00:03:40.939 They might be like the false teachers. 00:03:42.039 --> 00:03:45.139 They don't believe that the second coming is real. 00:03:45.439 --> 00:03:47.819 They don't believe that God's judgment is real. 00:03:47.819 --> 00:03:50.239 And so they think the Christian message is a joke. 00:03:51.400 --> 00:03:53.259 They're telling people it's a joke. 00:03:53.959 --> 00:03:57.840 They're teaching people not to pay attention to what Jesus has to say 00:03:57.840 --> 00:03:59.039 or what Peter has to say, 00:03:59.120 --> 00:04:02.419 because they won't have to worry about God coming back again to the earth. 00:04:02.500 --> 00:04:03.879 So that's one category of people. 00:04:04.340 --> 00:04:06.799 They don't believe that Jesus is coming again. 00:04:07.359 --> 00:04:11.180 The other category, and this is probably more likely the people receiving this letter, 00:04:11.280 --> 00:04:14.400 they're tempted to doubt that Jesus is coming again. 00:04:14.400 --> 00:04:17.860 These false teachers are telling us this is all a joke. 00:04:19.000 --> --> 00:05:31.719 if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes, he condemned them to extinction, 00:05:32.459 --> 00:05:36.019 making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly, 00:05:36.699 --> 00:05:41.539 and if he rescued Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked, 00:05:42.339 --> 00:05:45.159 for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, 00:05:45.579 --> 00:05:50.699 he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard. 00:05:50.699 --> 00:05:52.099 Verse 9, 00:05:52.659 --> 00:05:56.240 Then roof and new gutters 00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:49.680 and all the things that come along with that destruction. 00:07:50.060 --> 00:07:52.920 We're also working on that same thing with our church. 00:07:52.920 --> 00:07:57.439 Now, our church is different than my house in one very important way. 00:07:58.360 --> 00:07:59.199 It's a lot bigger. 00:08:01.160 --> 00:08:05.020 Which means our choice of a roofer matters a lot more. 00:08:05.319 --> 00:08:07.120 So our deacons, and especially Tom Gearing, 00:08:07.200 --> 00:08:10.980 have put a ton of work into making sure we pick the right roofer. 00:08:11.400 --> 00:08:12.860 The reason we want to pick the right roofer is, 00:08:12.980 --> 00:08:14.879 of course, there's big consequences, right? 00:08:14.900 --> 00:08:15.740 A lot's at stake. 00:08:16.639 --> 00:08:19.520 If we choose the wrong person, we could regret it for years. 00:08:19.920 --> 00:08:22.240 We could be caught up in all sorts of hassle, right? 00:08:22.240 --> 00:09:01.340 How can we have confidence that you're going to deliver 00:09:01.340 --> 00:09:03.139 what you say you're going to deliver? 00:09:04.180 --> 00:09:05.720 Because a lot is at stake. 00:10:36.399 For verse 4, we're told that these angels 00:10:36.399 --> 00:10:38.600 are to be kept until the what? 00:10:39.899 --> 00:10:40.639 The judgment. 00:10:41.559 --> 00:10:43.600 Verse 9, same passage. 00:10:44.720 --> 00:10:46.659 We find out the Lord knows how to rescue 00:10:46.659 --> 00:10:49.379 the godly from trials and to keep the unrighteous 00:10:49.379 --> 00:10:53.000 under punishment until the day of judgment. 00:10:53.480 --> 00:10:55.419 Now, this isn't the only time we've heard about the day. 00:10:55.519 --> 00:10:58.000 We also saw it in chapter 1, verse 19, 00:10:58.500 --> 00:11:01.960 where we were told that there is a lamp 00:11:01.960 --> 00:11:05.399 shining in a dark place until the day dawns. 00:11:05.399 --> 00:11:07.100 And I told you that this day was the day 00:11:07.100 --> 00:11:09.319 when God was going to come and make the world right. 00:11:09.720 --> 00:11:11.959 So, first of all, we're talking about the judgment. 00:11:12.139 --> 00:11:14.159 We are talking about a day. 00:11:15.379 --> 00:11:17.419 And this day is going to be the day 00:11:17.419 --> 00:11:20.519 when Jesus comes back to this world 00:11:20.519 --> 00:11:22.639 in person as he promised, 00:11:23.340 --> 00:11:25.939 and every single person in this world 00:11:25.939 --> 00:11:28.500 answers for what they have done in their lives. 00:11:28.500 --> 00:11:32.519 And so, first of all, the judgment is a day. 00:11:32.600 --> 00:11:33.279 It's an event. 00:11:33.399 --> 00:11:36.759 It is a historical event that's going to come in the future. 00:11:36.840 --> 00:11:38.399 The Bible teaches this clearly 00:11:38.399 --> 00:11:42.399 in passages like John chapter 5, verses 22 through 29, 00:11:42.580 --> 00:11:44.659 where we're told exactly what's going to happen. 00:11:46.419 --> 00:11:49.860 Not only is this judgment, however, a day, 00:11:50.860 --> 00:11:53.340 a time where God holds everyone accountable, 00:11:53.460 --> 00:11:55.019 but there's going to be two different outcomes. 00:11:55.019 --> 00:11:57.460 So, at the end of that passage in John chapter 5, 00:11:57.659 --> 00:11:59.779 we're told there's going to be a resurrection of life 00:11:59.779 --> 00:12:01.559 and a resurrection of judgment. 00:12:02.039 --> 00:12:03.819 There are going to be those who have faith in Christ 00:12:03.819 --> 00:12:04.939 who are raised from the dead, 00:12:05.720 --> 00:12:07.100 and they go on to eternal life. 00:12:07.659 --> 00:12:10.039 There's going to be those who do not have faith in Christ, 00:12:10.120 --> 00:12:11.220 and they're raised to judgment. 00:12:11.779 --> 00:12:12.879 That's the day component. 00:12:12.980 --> 00:12:14.439 There's also an ongoing component. 00:12:14.579 --> 00:12:17.559 That judgment has a picture to it 00:12:17.559 --> 00:12:18.600 that the Bible gives us. 00:12:18.919 --> 00:12:20.980 It's often spoken of as fire. 00:12:20.980 --> 00:12:24.639 We're told in Matthew chapter 5, verses 41, 00:12:24.940 --> 00:12:26.899 or 25, excuse me, Matthew 25, 00:12:27.560 --> 00:12:30.039 I believe it's 41, that there's an eternal fire. 00:12:31.039 --> 00:12:34.139 So, there's something about judgment that continues forever. 00:12:34.300 --> 00:12:37.139 It's not that those who are judged cease to exist, 00:12:37.539 --> 00:12:42.120 but they experience separation and alienation from God forever. 00:12:43.740 --> 00:12:45.899 And so, I mention all this to clarify 00:12:45.899 --> 00:12:49.480 what it is when we talk about God's judgment. 00:12:49.480 --> 00:12:53.379 We are saying there are two destinations for people after this life, 00:12:53.879 --> 00:12:57.379 eternal punishment or eternal life. 00:12:57.440 --> 00:12:59.920 The Bible cannot be clear about this. 00:13:00.360 --> 00:13:02.480 This is the way our confession of faith puts it. 00:13:03.340 --> 00:13:03.539 It says, 00:13:03.680 --> 00:13:06.240 The souls of the wicked are cast into hell 00:13:06.240 --> 00:13:09.379 where they remain in torments and utter darkness 00:13:09.379 --> 00:13:12.480 reserved to the judgment of the great day. 00:13:12.480 --> 00:13:18.039 In summary, judgment will occur on a day when Jesus returns. 00:13:18.600 --> 00:13:19.639 There will be two outcomes. 00:13:20.399 --> 00:13:23.279 Life, you expect me to say death, 00:13:23.480 --> 00:13:25.240 not life and death, but life, 00:13:26.000 --> 00:13:27.100 or eternal punishment. 00:13:29.899 --> 00:13:34.039 It's that reality that Peter is giving us the references here now. 00:13:34.120 --> 00:13:35.480 So, let's jump right into the list. 00:13:35.580 --> 00:13:38.740 First of all, reference number one we find in verse four. 00:13:38.740 --> 00:13:40.539 These are the first people we need to call, 00:13:40.639 --> 00:13:41.539 and they are the angels. 00:13:42.639 --> 00:13:45.700 We're told that these angels are being kept 00:13:45.700 --> 00:13:48.820 until the judgment. 00:13:48.960 --> 00:13:51.639 Now, I'm not going to go into great detail about the angels, 00:13:51.799 --> 00:13:53.700 not because I don't want to talk about it, 00:13:53.879 --> 00:13:56.259 but because these are the exact same angels 00:13:56.259 --> 00:13:57.720 we saw in 1 Peter. 00:13:58.560 --> 00:14:00.560 Remember in 1 Peter chapter three, 00:14:00.680 --> 00:14:03.519 we talked about the angels that were kept under punishment 00:14:03.519 --> 00:14:06.080 that Jesus came and proclaimed his victory over. 00:14:06.080 --> 00:14:10.520 We assume these are fallen angels from Genesis chapter six, 00:14:11.139 --> 00:14:13.860 and we talked about the fact that God was restraining them, 00:14:14.000 --> 00:14:16.000 holding them back from working evil in the world. 00:14:16.639 --> 00:14:18.500 Now, if you recall, I gave you the illustration 00:14:18.500 --> 00:14:21.879 about how I used to play capture the flag at summer camp, 00:14:22.080 --> 00:14:24.920 and I told you these angels were in jail 00:14:24.920 --> 00:14:25.980 during capture the flag. 00:14:26.940 --> 00:14:28.900 Okay, so the game was still going on. 00:14:29.500 --> 00:14:31.020 The angels were restrained. 00:14:31.120 --> 00:14:32.280 They weren't able to act. 00:14:32.379 --> 00:14:34.660 They weren't able to tag people and put more people in jail. 00:14:34.659 course, that's what we see here in verse five. 00:16:22.580 --> 00:16:25.280 If he did not spare the ancient world, 00:16:26.000 --> 00:16:28.480 but preserved Noah with seven others. 00:16:28.840 --> --> 00:22:08.699 The belief in a God of pure love 00:22:08.699 --> 00:22:10.259 who accepts everyone 00:22:10.259 --> 00:22:11.879 and judges no one 00:22:11.879 --> 00:22:14.399 is a powerful act of faith. 00:22:15.579 --> 00:22:18.319 Not only is there no evidence for it 00:22:18.319 --> 00:22:19.519 in the natural order, 00:22:20.599 --> 00:22:22.579 but there is almost no historical,
