After verse 2, Paul instructs the Colossians to pray for the spread of the gospel, 00:01:00.659 --> 00:01:06.299 specifically that God may open to him a door for the word to declare the mystery of Christ, 00:01:06.840 --> 00:01:11.960 that he may make it clear. Paul then gives further instructions about their role in spreading the 00:01:11.960 --> 00:01:17.700 gospel. Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. When he wrote, 00:02:22.540 --> 00:02:28.939 the truth of the gospel is the principal article of all Christian doctrine. Most necessary is it that 00:02:28.939 --> 00:02:36.240 we know this article well. Teach it to others and beat it into their heads continually. That's what 00:02:36.240 --> 00:02:43.379 Martin Luther said. Now, I watched a lot of the World Cup, probably too much of the World Cup, and one thing I kept 00:02:43.379 --> 00:02:50.560 hearing over and over is, this team knows their identity. This team really knows their identity. 00:02:51.020 --> 00:02:56.420 This team, when they get down at the beginning, they don't forget their identity. This team, 00:02:56.480 --> 00:03:01.640 they know who they are and they know who they're not. Lots of talk about identity in soccer. 00:03:01.639 --> 00:03:09.519 Interesting. I've never played soccer, but I am a bit skeptical that identity is that important to a 00:03:09.519 --> 00:03:16.579 soccer team. But for the church, it's crucially important. Crucially important that we understand 00:03:16.579 --> 00:03:25.799 our identity, and our identity centers on the gospel. It tells us who God is and who we are. It tells us 00:03:25.800 --> 00:03:33.960 why we exist and what our mission is. Why does Church of the Advent exist? Why do we exist here in 00:03:33.960 --> 00:03:40.760 Columbia Heights, in Canaan Baptist Church, in Washington, D.C., and not somewhere else? 00:03:41.880 --> 00:03:48.160 So tonight we're going to look at the gospel. Just one point tonight. We're going to look at the 00:03:48.159 --> 00:04:03.039 gospel. What is the gospel? So let me pray. We may not have known it, Lord, when we arrived, but we all 00:04:03.039 --> 00:04:15.639 need to hear the gospel tonight. As a church, we seek the flourishing of Washington, D.C. by building gospel-centered 00:04:53.199 --> 00:04:59.659 communities. Gospel-centered communities. We should know, well, what we are centered on. And we're going 00:04:59.659 --> 00:05:05.620 to use the book of Colossians to guide us. So what do you think of when you hear the word 00:05:05.620 --> 00:05:12.399 gospel? Well, you might think of a certain style of music. You might think of it as an adjective, 00:05:12.399 --> 00:05:19.519 as in the gospel truth. You might think of it as a belief, or a set of beliefs, or an idea 00:05:19.519 --> 00:05:27.579 that the gospel is the minimum doctrine one has to believe in order to go to heaven when one dies. 00:05:27.579 --> 00:05:35.800 Well, the word gospel literally means good news, and it is a translation of the Greek word 00:05:35.800 --> 00:05:43.060 evangelion, which was a great announcement of a mighty victory, or a new king. It was a word that 00:05:43.060 --> 00:05:48.379 already existed in Paul's day when he used it. According to legend, after the Greeks defeated the 00:05:48.379 --> 00:05:58.000 Persians at the Battle of Marathon, Pheidippides ran 26 miles back to Athens to deliver the evangelion, 00:05:58.120 --> 00:06:04.339 the good news of victory. He proclaimed, joy to you, we have won, and then he immediately had died, 00:06:05.219 --> 00:06:12.399 again proclaiming joy to you. We find an inscription which was found chiseled on the ruins of an old 00:06:12.399 --> 00:06:19.799 government building in Asia Minor, dated around 6 BC. The most divine Caesar we should consider equal to 00:06:19.799 --> 00:06:26.120 the beginning of all things, for when everything was falling into disorder and tending toward dissolution, 00:06:26.439 --> 00:06:32.500 he restored it once more and gave the whole world a new aura. All the cities unanimously adopt the 00:06:32.500 --> 00:06:38.319 birthday of the divine Caesar. That's the new beginning of the year. Has brought our life to the climax, 00:06:38.459 --> 00:06:42.060 perfection, and giving to us the Emperor Augustus. He has put an end to war, 00:06:42.060 --> 00:06:48.420 and to set all things in order. And having become God manifest, Caesar has fulfilled all the hopes of 00:06:48.420 --> 00:06:53.500 earlier times. The birthday of the God Augustus has been for the whole world the beginning of 00:06:53.500 --> 00:06:59.740 Evangelion. The birthday of Augustus. It's the gospel. It's the good news concerning him. 00:07:01.939 --> 00:07:10.259 So Paul is using this word gospel correctly. It's a royal announcement. Paul is making a royal 00:07:10.259 --> 00:07:20.339 announcement. The gospel is about a royal affair. It concerns a king. It's King Jesus, the Christ, the 00:07:20.339 --> 00:07:29.579 anointed one. And the gospel reports an event, the death, burial, and resurrection of this king. 00:07:29.579 --> 00:07:36.839 It's an announcement that Jesus Christ is king. And that through his death and resurrection, 00:07:36.839 --> 00:07:40.439 he has secured a victory over sin and death. 00:07:43.740 --> 00:07:48.379 Colossians 1 says that he is the image of the invisible God. 00:07:49.439 --> 00:07:52.819 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell. 00:07:52.819 --> 00:08:00.779 And through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the 00:08:00.779 --> 00:08:05.939 blood of his cross. In chapter 2 of Colossians, Paul writes that God raised him from the dead, 00:08:06.600 --> 00:08:11.519 and that the Colossians were made alive together with him, having forgiven them all of their trespasses. 00:08:12.100 --> 00:08:18.060 The book of Colossians is a proclamation of the gospel. It's an event. The death and resurrection of Jesus. 00:08:18.060 --> 00:08:26.879 Now many other religions are founded on a set of teachings, or philosophies, or private revelations. 00:08:28.240 --> 00:08:37.879 Christianity is unique in that it is founded on a proclamation of an event in history, which makes it falsifiable. 00:08:40.259 --> 00:08:47.320 Paul says that this event brings about reconciliation to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven. 00:08:48.059 --> 00:08:51.119 Well, why is reconciliation required in the first place? 00:08:52.439 --> 00:08:54.599 To answer that question, we 00:09:24.500 Yet we did not give thanks to you or honor you as God, but turned away. 00:09:25.199 --> 00:09:31.699 Falling into sin, we and all your works became subject to misery and death. 00:09:32.360 --> 00:09:35.299 Just a couple chapters later, when we read Genesis 3, 00:09:35.299 --> 00:09:40.859 We see four levels of alienation that require reconciliation. 00:09:41.979 --> 00:09:47.719 We become alienated to God, alienated from God, which brings about spiritual death. 00:09:48.299 --> 00:09:56.519 We become alienated from ourselves, and we now experience things like shame, psychological alienation. 00:09:56.519 --> 00:10:03.759 We become alienated from each other, bringing about all kinds of social alienation, 00:10:03.759 --> 00:10:06.799 on the personal level world that is not the way it is intended to be. 00:10:34.980 --> 00:10:38.220 So which of these did Jesus come to fix, of those four? 00:10:39.179 --> 00:10:45.379 Is it spiritual, psychological, social, or cosmic alienation? 00:10:46.340 --> 00:10:47.899 Well, it's all four, right? 00:10:48.360 --> 00:10:49.460 He came to fix it all. 00:10:49.460 --> 00:10:54.639 Well, Colossians says that through Jesus, God reconciles to himself all things, 00:10:54.780 --> 00:10:56.420 whether on earth or in heaven. 00:10:57.360 --> 00:10:57.720 How? 00:10:58.340 --> 00:11:01.180 By making peace by
