question is, how should we enter the house of God? 00:06:11.079 --> 00:06:14.180 How should we enter the house of the King of Kings? 00:06:14.180 --> 00:06:17.879 In Psalm 30 we read, this is a psalm. 00:06:18.300 --> 00:06:19.259 It's a song. 00:06:20.079 --> 00:06:22.259 And then here it is, word for word, one more time. 00:06:22.400 --> 00:06:26.100 At the dedication of the house of David. 00:06:26.639 --> 00:06:29.900 All of those words are in the Hebrew passage. 00:06:31.100 --> 00:06:34.720 And because of this dedication, this language, 00:06:35.319 --> 00:06:40.160 there's not a strong consensus on the exact occasion for which this psalm was to be used. 00:06:40.160 --> 00:06:45.600 The house that it's referring to, it could mean one of David's palaces. 00:06:46.300 --> 00:06:50.540 2 Samuel 5.11 says that the king of Tyre, a foreign nation, 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:54.120 sent messengers, meaning ambassadors, to David, 00:06:54.680 --> 00:06:59.520 and cedar trees and carpenters and masons who would work with the stone cutting. 00:07:00.200 --> 00:07:02.600 And they built David a house. 00:07:02.600 --> 00:07:11.060 We read in 2 Chronicles 15.1 that David built houses, many palaces for himself in the city of David. 00:07:11.280 --> 00:07:12.000 That's Jerusalem. 00:07:13.000 --> 00:07:20.540 And he prepared a place for the ark of God, which was a tent pitched for the ark. 00:07:21.300 --> 00:07:26.220 So there it was, the tabernacle, a tent as the house of God, 00:07:26.379 --> 00:07:28.320 a place for the ark of the covenant, 00:07:28.320 --> 00:07:31.900 but palaces all around Jerusalem for King David. 00:07:32.679 --> 00:07:34.439 So what was the occasion of Psalm 30? 00:07:35.299 --> 00:07:39.419 We know that David desired to build a house for God as well, 00:07:39.500 --> 00:07:40.959 but God said, you're a man of blood. 00:07:41.579 --> 00:07:42.459 It won't be for you. 00:07:42.519 --> 00:07:45.319 And Solomon was the king who got to build the temple. 00:07:46.539 --> 00:07:50.439 Some have interpreted the comma after the word house 00:07:50.439 --> 00:07:54.359 to mean the dedication of the house, meaning the house of God. 00:07:54.360 --> 00:07:58.680 Maybe David writing this psalm so that when the temple is built by Solomon, 00:07:58.879 --> 00:08:03.379 they could pull Psalm 30 out and sing Psalm 30 at the dedication of the temple. 00:08:03.379 --> 00:08:09.219 Now, one other interpretation would be the house represents a dynasty. 00:08:09.219 --> 00:08:13.339 So the dedication of the house of David, meaning the dynasty of David. 00:08:13.699 --> 00:08:16.860 So every new king that would be inaugurated from the line of David, 00:08:17.219 --> 00:08:19.199 this would be the occasion to sing Psalm 30, 00:08:19.540 --> 00:08:23.339 praising God for sparing David's life and keeping this going. 00:08:24.199 --> 00:08:28.339 Now, whether Psalm 30 was written for the dedication of each new king taking office, 00:08:28.339 --> 00:08:31.919 or for the celebration of the Lord's house, the temple, 00:08:32.480 --> 00:08:34.600 here's the truth for you and me. 00:08:35.480 --> 00:08:37.399 Psalm 30 is relevant for us. 00:08:38.279 --> 00:08:43.000 It's a guide for how we are to enter the house of our king, 00:08:43.699 --> 00:08:46.620 the house of the king of kings, Jesus Christ. 00:08:47.100 --> 00:08:49.699 And we get to do this at the start of each new week, 00:08:49.779 --> 00:08:53.339 every Lord's Day when we gather to worship him as a congregation. 00:08:53.899 --> 00:08:57.159 So the outline for our sermon today is four ways 00:08:57.159 --> 00:09:00.779 for you and I to enter the house of our king. 00:09:01.120 --> 00:09:04.379 Four ways to enter the house of our king. 00:09:04.959 --> 00:09:07.919 Number one, as you enter the house of your king, 00:09:08.919 --> 00:09:13.860 Psalm 30 teaches us to sing of God's faithfulness over the grave. 00:09:14.839 --> 00:09:16.480 The first way to do it is this, 00:09:16.500 --> 00:09:18.339 as you enter the house of the king, 00:09:19.019 --> 00:09:22.059 sing of God's faithfulness over the grave. 00:09:22.819 --> 00:09:25.120 I want to show you this in verses one through four. 00:09:25.459 --> 00:09:27.019 Look at verse one with me. 00:09:28.159 --> 00:09:29.019 David writes, 00:09:29.120 --> 00:09:31.399 I will extol you, O Lord, 00:09:31.620 --> 00:09:33.559 for you have lifted me up 00:09:33.559 --> 00:09:37.240 and I've not let my foes rejoice over me. 00:09:38.779 --> 00:09:41.980 It seems like David is feeling the end is imminent. 00:09:43.019 --> 00:09:45.980 This is going to be my last day on this earth. 00:09:46.079 --> 00:09:48.539 My foes, the people who have been trying to kill me all along, 00:09:48.799 --> 00:09:49.759 they're going to rejoice. 00:09:50.259 --> 00:09:51.039 They'll be happy. 00:09:51.039 --> 00:09:54.699 And everyone who's been loyal to me will be mourning and sad. 00:09:55.500 --> 00:09:59.179 It's going to be the end of my life, my reign, my kingdom, my house. 00:10:00.179 --> 00:10:02.159 God, you are not going to keep your promises. 00:10:02.799 --> 00:10:05.259 I won't get to see my enemies destroyed. 00:10:05.259 --> 00:10:08.480 They'll be the ones cheering at my destruction instead. 00:10:09.419 --> 00:10:11.000 And verse two gives us insights. 00:10:12.419 --> 00:10:17.200 Many have concluded that most likely this end that David felt approaching to him 00:10:17.200 --> 00:10:18.899 came because of physical sickness. 00:10:18.899 --> 00:10:23.980 It tells us he was likely having a life-threatening illness. 00:10:24.799 --> 00:10:25.559 Look at verse two. 00:10:25.620 --> 00:10:28.579 O Lord, my God, I cried out to you and you healed me. 00:10:29.799 --> 00:10:31.120 And verse one, when he says, 00:10:31.120 --> 00:10:32.419 You lifted me up. 00:10:33.139 --> 00:10:35.600 You lifted me up out of a sickness, perhaps, 00:10:35.980 --> 00:10:37.100 out of the deathbed, 00:10:37.320 --> 00:10:39.580 and put me back on my feet upright. 00:10:40.560 --> 00:10:43.200 That verb, to be lifted up by God, 00:10:43.539 --> 00:10:48.759 it's the same word used to describe drawing water out of a deep cistern. 00:10:48.899 --> 00:10:51.980 You know, so you picture a well, a pit that's dug very deep, 00:10:52.620 --> 00:10:57.000 and someone much stronger has to lift up the water 00:10:57.000 --> 00:11:00.039 or a captive that's been thrown inside that cistern. 00:11:01.600 --> 00:11:05.500 David doesn't just need God to give him a little hand. 00:11:06.320 --> 00:11:09.580 David needs God to reach down all the way into the depths 00:11:09.580 --> 00:11:11.620 and lift him up. 00:11:11.940 --> 00:11:13.240 Lord, you do the lifting. 00:11:13.799 --> 00:11:16.279 I don't even have strength to help at all. 00:11:17.820 --> 00:11:20.360 He's been in this dark, suffocating pit. 00:11:21.100 --> 00:11:21.840 my soul from the grave. 00:11:38.299 --> 00:11:40.340 You have kept me alive. 00:11:42.039 --> 00:11:43.960 He says literally next, he says, 00:11:44.039 --> 00:11:46.100 you kept me alive. 00:11:46.919 --> 00:11:50.180 You kept me from those that are descending to the pit to death, 00:11:50.779 --> 00:11:52.440 that I should not go down to the pit. 00:11:52.980 --> 00:11:55.620 I was on the path of destruction, of perdition. 00:11:55.620 --> 00:11:57.820 I was being carried downward. 00:11:58.299 --> 00:12:03.000 And you're the one who pulled me out of that broken downward pattern. 00:12:04.000 --> 00:12:04.860 You preserved me. 00:12:05.700 --> 00:12:06.879 You healed me. 00:12:07.340 --> 00:12:08.539 You mended me. 00:12:08.539 --> 00:12:20.500 As you enter the house of your king, sing of God's faithfulness over the grave to give us life at all. 00:12:20.500 --> 00:12:28.360 Now, the Lord has preserved some of you and some of your loved ones from physical death, from physical illness. 00:12:28.500 --> 00:12:29.740 You shouldn't be here right now. 00:12:30.500 --> 00:12:36.419 I can think of near-death experiences in my own life and probably many more that I'm not even aware of. 00:12:36.419 --> 00:12:38.939 And the Lord is the preserver of life. 00:12:39.039 --> 00:12:40.279 He's the one who has kept you. 00:12:40.879 --> 00:12:45.899 He's the one who has kept you from going down to the pit and given you life and preserved you. 00:12:46.399 --> 00:12:52.439 You enter his house praising him for life, for keeping you from the grave, for being faithful, 00:12:53.299 --> 00:12:55.699 fulfilling the purposes he has for you here still. 00:12:57.279 --> 00:13:01.319 When we think of a person on their deathbed and a near-death experience, 00:13:01.320 --> 00:13:09.040 I know some of you are praying, and I've prayed from up here before with you for Pastor James Dolezal. 00:13:09.860 --> 00:13:14.720 He's a professor at one of our seminaries and a faithful brother in Christ. 00:13:15.340 --> 00:13:19.300 As some of you might remember, he was going for a walk near his home, 00:13:19.640 --> 00:13:25.200 and he was using a crosswalk, and a car hit him by accident. 00:13:26.020 --> 00:13:29.420 But it collapsed his ribs, broke them. 00:13:29.419 --> 00:13:32.000 Almost all the ribs are broken and puncturing his lungs. 00:13:32.179 --> 00:13:33.259 Both lungs collapsed. 00:13:33.819 --> 00:13:36.419 He was intubated, all the fluid filling up the lungs. 00:13:37.179 --> 00:13:43.459 Mentally, he was in almost a comatose state, off and on for many, many weeks. 00:13:45.339 --> 00:13:48.139 And then this, finally, as I'm checking the Caring Bridge, 00:13:48.219 --> 00:13:50.240 every time they update it, almost every day. 00:13:50.939 --> 00:13:54.459 And this wonderful message came through just a couple days ago from his son. 00:13:54.460 --> 00:13:56.420 Quote, 00:13:56.420 --> 00:13:59.840 Seeing my dad was extremely encouraging. 00:14:00.560 --> 00:14:06.759 When we left him three weeks ago, he was intubated, mostly unconscious, incoherent, delirious. 00:14:07.120 --> 00:14:12.200 But tonight, he was able to have a fairly normal conversation with us. 00:14:12.600 --> 00:14:18.519 He was happy that we are there and continued to talk about God's care for him after his accident. 00:14:18.519 --> 00:14:25.240 The scripture that they encouraged everyone who would read that with is this. 00:14:26.600 --> 00:14:29.120 Acts 17, 24 and 25. 00:14:29.120 --> 00:14:30.120 Amen. 00:14:30.120 --> 00:14:58.100 The Lord preserves us from the grave every moment we have on this earth still. 00:14:58.100 --> 00:15:00.940 The Lord is the giver of life. 00:15:01.840 --> 00:15:05.100 And yes, we worship him, but not because he lacks anything. 00:15:05.899 --> 00:15:09.240 He is the one who a temple cannot contain. 00:15:10.120 --> 00:15:15.379 His throne in the spiritual realm of heaven, it is coming with power to earth. 00:15:15.500 --> 00:15:22.259 One day, the new heavens and the new earth will fill this cosmos with the glory of God and all will behold him. 00:15:22.259 --> 00:15:28.580 And so when we have life and breath, even in these broken bodies that deserve to be dead already, 00:15:29.259 --> 00:15:36.259 we have life and breath to praise him, to sing to him, to give thanks for his faithfulness over the grave. 00:15:36.480 --> 00:15:38.559 And that's what we're exhorted to do in verse 4. 00:15:38.639 --> 00:15:39.100 Look at that. 00:15:39.100 --> 00:15:45.540 Now the king turns to the people, the people of God as the representative of the king of heaven. 00:15:46.000 --> 00:15:47.460 And David commands the people, 00:15:48.399 --> 00:15:51.860 Sing praise to the Lord, you saints of his. 00:15:52.580 --> 00:15:57.120 Give thanks at the remembrance of his holy name. 00:15:57.840 --> 00:15:59.100 You see what David did? 00:15:59.100 --> 00:16:03.720 By God preserving the life of his mediator, the anointed king, 00:16:04.159 --> 00:16:07.899 God is now issuing praise to all the people. 00:16:08.659 --> 00:16:11.440 Because God preserved the life of the anointed one, 00:16:11.620 --> 00:16:15.100 and God was faithful over the grave of his anointed king. 00:16:15.580 --> 00:16:18.240 All the people of God are called to praise God, 00:16:18.779 --> 00:16:23.220 and to remember the holy name of God because of this great deed. 00:16:24.160 --> 00:16:26.240 We're only one-third of the way through this psalm, 00:16:26.240 --> 00:16:31.440 and I'm sure you can already see how this points to final fulfillment in our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:16:33.039 --> 00:16:38.879 Give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness, his holy Christ is the king whose enemies rejoiced over him, shouting, 00:17:12.359 --> 00:17:13.000 Crucify! 00:17:14.039 --> 00:17:21.059 Jesus Christ is the king who cried out in a loud voice from the cross in agony to God. 00:17:21.059 --> 00:17:27.379 Jesus Christ is the king who lived and suffered in obedience to God. 00:17:28.099 --> 00:17:31.759 Jesus Christ is the king who was buried in the grave. 00:17:32.559 --> 00:17:37.720 David was spared the grave at this moment, but Jesus died, was buried. 00:17:37.720 --> 00:17:45.039 And yet God proved his faithfulness over the grave of King Jesus. 00:17:45.039 --> 00:17:51.079 Jesus Christ is the king whose life was brought up from the grave. 00:17:51.740 --> 00:17:52.940 He was restored. 00:17:54.039 --> 00:17:59.140 Jesus Christ is the king
