WEBVTT

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:18.640
 Welcome everyone. Handouts, pens at the back, Bibles as well.

00:00:22.960 --> 00:00:23.480
!

00:00:23.480 --> 00:00:24.960
 Come on in. Hey Patrick, good to see you man.

00:00:24.960 --> 00:00:24.960

00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:37.000
 Thank you.

00:00:37.000 --> 00:00:45.000
 Thank you.

00:00:45.000 --> 00:00:55.000
 Thank you.

00:00:55.000 --> 00:01:02.000
 Thank you.

00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:10.000
 Thank you.

00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:17.000
 Thank you.

00:01:17.000 --> 00:01:17.000

00:01:17.000 --> 00:01:19.000
 Thank you.

00:01:19.000 --> 00:01:25.000
 Thank you.

00:01:25.000 --> 00:01:32.000
 Thank you.

00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:34.000
 Thank you.

00:01:34.000 --> 00:01:40.000
 Thank you.

00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:41.000
 Thank you.

00:01:41.000 --> 00:01:43.000
 Thank you.

00:01:43.000 --> 00:01:47.000
 Thank you.

00:01:47.000 --> 00:01:49.000
 Thank you.

00:01:49.000 --> 00:01:50.000
 Thank you.

00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:51.000
 Thank you.

00:01:51.000 --> 00:01:52.000
 Thank you.

00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:53.000
 Great.

00:01:54.000 --> 00:01:55.000
 Have a seat.

00:01:55.000 --> 00:01:58.000
 Grab a hand out at the back.

00:01:58.000 --> 00:02:01.000
 Good to see everyone.

00:02:01.000 --> 00:02:04.000
 Let me pray to start and we'll jump straight in.

00:02:07.000 --> 00:02:12.000
 Lord God, we thank you for the Lord Jesus Christ, our prophet, priest and king.

00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:15.000
 Thank you for his glorious saving work for us.

00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:22.000
 And we pray that as we consider your word today, that you would help us to better know

00:02:22.000 --> 00:02:28.000
 and appreciate and appreciate and love what Christ has done and is doing for us right now in heaven.

00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:31.000
 Help us to understand these wonderful things.

00:02:31.000 --> 00:02:34.000
 And we ask that your spirit would be with us in Jesus name.

00:02:34.000 --> 00:02:35.000
 Amen.

00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:40.000
 So this series we're in, in adult Sunday school, is all about the work of Christ.

00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:50.000
 And we've seen over the past few weeks that God saves through offices, through prophets, priests and kings.

00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:54.000
 So God doesn't just zap this thing called salvation down.

00:02:54.000 --> 00:03:04.000
 No, he saves by providing three types of men, three offices, three people with duties, which are given.

00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:09.000
 These three offices are given to solve our three problems of sin.

00:03:09.000 --> 00:03:15.000
 So if you remember, prophets cure ignorance, priests cure guilt and kings free the enslaved.

00:03:15.000 --> 00:03:20.000
 And last week we saw that priests bring us to God.

00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:24.000
 So we can't come to God in any old way.

00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:33.000
 Because of our sin, there's this huge burden that hangs over us that separates from, separates us from God.

00:03:33.000 --> 00:03:38.000
 His wrath and his justice is stopping us from approaching him.

00:03:38.000 --> 00:03:50.000
 And so we need a, we need a priest to help us approach God, to propitiate that wrath, to end it, to divert it, to subdue it.

00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:55.000
 And so priests in the Old Testament would sacrifice an animal.

00:03:55.000 --> 00:04:00.000
 And so that animal would die instead of the human, instead of the Israelites.

00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:04.000
 And so God's wrath would be propitiated because it had gone on to the animal.

00:04:04.000 --> 00:04:08.000
 And so there would now be atonement between man and God.

00:04:08.000 --> 00:04:14.000
 And then the priest would represent the people and bring the people with him into God's presence.

00:04:14.000 --> 00:04:22.000
 And so we can only have eternal life and know God and be with God.

00:04:22.000 --> 00:04:23.000
 That's what we need for eternal life.

00:04:23.000 --> 00:04:27.000
 We can only do that through a priest.

00:04:27.000 --> 00:04:32.000
 And all that is fulfilled and achieved in Christ.

00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:37.000
 So in the Old Testament we have three different offices.

00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:40.000
 And one of which was a priest.

00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:42.000
 So priest and sacrifice were wrapped up together.

00:04:42.000 --> 00:04:46.000
 But in the Lord Jesus Christ all these three offices kind of collapse into each other.

00:04:46.000 --> 00:04:49.000
 And he is the prophet, priest and king.

00:04:49.000 --> 00:04:57.000
 And so on the cross Christ offered himself as the perfect sinless sacrifice.

00:04:57.000 --> 00:05:03.000
 And so Christ was a priest offering something, offering himself.

00:05:03.000 --> 00:05:09.000
 And so his death has now and forever ended God's wrath over his people.

00:05:09.000 --> 00:05:11.000
 It's propitiated God's wrath.

00:05:11.000 --> 00:05:16.000
 We now have perfect atonement and reconciliation with God.

00:05:16.000 --> 00:05:26.000
 But today I want us to see that Christ's priesthood didn't end on the cross.

00:05:26.000 --> 00:05:30.000
 Because when we think of Christ's priestly work or his sacrifice.

00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:33.000
 We can think, okay, it's just the cross.

00:05:33.000 --> 00:05:35.000
 Like our minds only go there.

00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:38.000
 But that's not the whole picture.

00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:46.000
 But I want us to see today his priestly work continues to happen in heaven today.

00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:52.000
 And right now Christ is acting as our priest on our behalf.

00:05:52.000 --> 00:05:55.000
 As he is before the Father in heaven.

00:05:55.000 --> 00:05:59.000
 I want us to see, well, first of all, how that is the case.

00:05:59.000 --> 00:06:01.000
 Like what's that all about?

00:06:01.000 --> 00:06:05.000
 But I want us to see why that is so important for us.

00:06:05.000 --> 00:06:09.000
 And so first we need to see this.

00:06:09.000 --> 00:06:11.000
 Christ isn't only a priest on the cross.

00:06:11.000 --> 00:06:13.000
 Christ is a priest forever.

00:06:13.000 --> 00:06:16.000
 And this is the first point today you can follow along on the handout.

00:06:16.000 --> 00:06:18.000
 Christ is a priest forever.

00:06:18.000 --> 00:06:20.000
 So look at the language of Hebrews.

00:06:20.000 --> 00:06:25.000
 Hebrews is this glorious book that's all about the priesthood of Christ.

00:06:25.000 --> 00:06:27.000
 And just look at the verses I've got there for you.

00:06:27.000 --> 00:06:31.000
 Look at when it says Christ is a priest.

00:06:31.000 --> 00:06:34.000
 When is Christ a priest?

00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:41.000
 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens.

00:06:41.000 --> 00:06:44.000
 Jesus, the son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

00:06:44.000 --> 00:06:47.000
 Hebrews 8.1.

00:06:47.000 --> 00:06:49.000
 Now the point in what we're saying is this.

00:06:49.000 --> 00:06:51.000
 This is the big point of Hebrews.

00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:54.000
 We have such a high priest.

00:06:54.000 --> 00:06:59.000
 One who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the majesty in heaven.

00:06:59.000 --> 00:07:01.000
 So just look at that.

00:07:01.000 --> 00:07:04.000
 When is Christ a priest?

00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:06.000
 Right now.

00:07:06.000 --> 00:07:08.000
 Seated in heaven.

00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:15.000
 We currently have a high priest doing priestly work for us for his church.

00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:17.000
 So he didn't die on the cross.

00:07:17.000 --> 00:07:19.000
 And then that kind of ended his priestly work.

00:07:19.000 --> 00:07:21.000
 He stopped being a priest then.

00:07:21.000 --> 00:07:22.000
 No.

00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:26.000
 There's this ongoing priestly work.

00:07:26.000 --> 00:07:27.000
 Because what does it say?

00:07:27.000 --> 00:07:29.000
 He is a priest right now.

00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:33.000
 And so if we remember to last week.

00:07:34.000 --> 00:07:36.000
 That shouldn't be too much of a surprise.

00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:41.000
 Because what was one of the problems of the Old Testament priests?

00:07:41.000 --> 00:07:43.000
 Look at Hebrews 7.

00:07:43.000 --> 00:07:46.000
 The former priests were many a number.

00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:51.000
 Because they were prevented by death from continuing in office.

00:07:51.000 --> 00:07:55.000
 But he holds his priesthood permanently.

00:07:55.000 --> 00:07:57.000
 Because he continues forever.

00:07:57.000 --> 00:08:02.000
 So we always need a priest to come to God.

00:08:02.000 --> 00:08:05.000
 But the problem with the Old Testament was that.

00:08:05.000 --> 00:08:06.000
 What was it?

00:08:06.000 --> 00:08:08.000
 The priests kept dying.

00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:12.000
 So they weren't really bringing us to God.

00:08:12.000 --> 00:08:14.000
 It was kind of the illustration I gave was like.

00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:16.000
 You remember Wallace and Gromit in the wrong trousers.

00:08:17.000 --> 00:08:18.000
 Gromit's on the little train.

00:08:18.000 --> 00:08:20.000
 And he's constantly laying track in front of him.

00:08:20.000 --> 00:08:21.000
 Right?

00:08:22.000 --> 00:08:23.000
 He's kind of going nowhere.

00:08:23.000 --> 00:08:25.000
 He's just having to put one thing down.

00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:26.000
 Just to get a little bit further.

00:08:26.000 --> 00:08:28.000
 But he's not really going anywhere.

00:08:28.000 --> 00:08:30.000
 And that was like the Old Testament priesthood.

00:08:31.000 --> 00:08:33.000
 You put one priest down.

00:08:33.000 --> 00:08:35.000
 You try and get toward God.

00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:36.000
 But he dies.

00:08:36.000 --> 00:08:37.000
 You've got to put another.

00:08:37.000 --> 00:08:38.000
 And you're constantly laying track.

00:08:38.000 --> 00:08:39.000
 Constantly laying track.

00:08:39.000 --> 00:08:42.000
 But you're not really getting to God.

00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:46.000
 But what do we have in Christ?

00:08:46.000 --> 00:08:49.000
 He holds his priesthood permanently.

00:08:49.000 --> 00:08:53.000
 He's still right now a priest.

00:08:53.000 --> 00:08:55.000
 Doing priestly work.

00:08:55.000 --> 00:08:57.000
 Because he continues forever.

00:08:57.000 --> 00:08:59.000
 He'll never die.

00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:02.000
 And so that's why the Father says to Jesus.

00:09:02.000 --> 00:09:04.000
 You are a priest forever.

00:09:05.000 --> 00:09:07.000
 After the order of Melchizedek.

00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:10.000
 So from now on.

00:09:10.000 --> 00:09:11.000
 That's when you just think about this.

00:09:11.000 --> 00:09:12.000
 From now on.

00:09:13.000 --> 00:09:14.000
 And forever.

00:09:14.000 --> 00:09:17.000
 We now have a high priest.

00:09:17.000 --> 00:09:18.000
 That we come to God through.

00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:22.000
 And I want us to see.

00:09:22.000 --> 00:09:24.000
 Why that is so important.

00:09:25.000 --> 00:09:26.000
 Why it's so important.

00:09:26.000 --> 00:09:28.000
 That we have a priest forever.

00:09:29.000 --> 00:09:30.000
 But in particular.

00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:31.000
 Why we have.

00:09:31.000 --> 00:09:32.000
 And need a priest.

00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:33.000
 Who's in heaven.

00:09:34.000 --> 00:09:35.000
 Right now.

00:09:36.000 --> 00:09:37.000
 So I want us to.

00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:39.000
 Absolutely hold firm.

00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:41.000
 To the importance of the cross.

00:09:42.000 --> 00:09:43.000
 It is.

00:09:43.000 --> 00:09:44.000
 Incomparably.

00:09:44.000 --> 00:09:45.000
 Unrepeatably important.

00:09:45.000 --> 00:09:47.000
 But also.

00:09:47.000 --> 00:09:49.000
 I want us to see.

00:09:49.000 --> 00:09:50.000
 That there is more.

00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:51.000
 To his priestly work.

00:09:51.000 --> 00:09:52.000
 Than that.

00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:53.000
 And so the next thing.

00:09:53.000 --> 00:09:54.000
 To see is this.

00:09:54.000 --> 00:09:55.000
 Our second point today.

00:09:55.000 --> 00:09:56.000
 We need.

00:09:57.000 --> 00:09:58.000
 A priest.

00:09:58.000 --> 00:09:59.000
 In God's presence.

00:10:01.000 --> 00:10:02.000
 Break out into groups.

00:10:02.000 --> 00:10:03.000
 And look up.

00:10:03.000 --> 00:10:04.000
 And look up.

00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:05.000
 Leviticus 16.

00:10:05.000 --> 00:10:06.000
 And Hebrews 9.

00:10:06.000 --> 00:10:07.000
 And.

00:10:07.000 --> 00:10:08.000
 These passages.

00:10:08.000 --> 00:10:10.000
 Are referring to the day of atonement.

00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:11.000
 And.

00:10:12.000 --> 00:10:14.000
 This one special day of the year.

00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:15.000
 In the Old Testament.

00:10:16.000 --> 00:10:17.000
 And I want you just.

00:10:17.000 --> 00:10:18.000
 To figure out.

00:10:18.000 --> 00:10:19.000
 What did the.

00:10:19.000 --> 00:10:20.000
 The old.

00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:21.000
 Old Testament priest.

00:10:21.000 --> 00:10:22.000
 Well in particular.

00:10:22.000 --> 00:10:23.000
 It's the high priest.

00:10:23.000 --> 00:10:24.000
 Need to do.

00:10:24.000 --> 00:10:26.000
 With the blood of the sacrifice.

00:10:26.000 --> 00:10:27.000
 And.

00:10:27.000 --> 00:10:29.000
 Where did he need to go.

00:10:29.000 --> 00:10:29.000

00:10:29.000 --> 00:10:30.000
 So break out into groups.

00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:31.000
 And just figure out.

00:10:31.000 --> 00:10:32.000
 Those two things.

00:10:53.000 --> 00:10:54.000
 In the middle.

00:10:54.000 --> 00:10:54.000

00:10:54.000 --> 00:10:55.000
 In the middle.

00:10:55.000 --> 00:10:56.000
 In the middle.

00:10:56.000 --> 00:10:57.000
 In the middle.

00:10:57.000 --> 00:10:58.000
 In the middle.

00:10:58.000 --> 00:10:59.000
 In the middle.

00:10:59.000 --> 00:11:00.000
 In the middle.

00:11:00.000 --> 00:11:00.500
 In the middle.

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:00.500 --> 00:11:00.500

00:11:23.000 --> 00:11:28.539
 There's a lot of information in these passages, but just try to focus on those two questions.

00:11:53.000 --> 00:12:22.980
 Thank you.

00:12:23.000 --> 00:12:52.980
 Thank you.

00:12:53.000 --> 00:12:53.519
 Okay.

00:12:56.080 --> 00:12:57.899
 What do we have?

00:12:58.840 --> 00:13:04.740
 Fernando, what did the Old Testament priest, what did the high priest need to do with the blood of the sacrifice?

00:13:04.740 --> 00:13:04.840
 Yes.

00:13:05.840 --> 00:13:13.299
 On the mercy seat, right?

00:13:13.440 --> 00:13:13.720
 Yeah, yeah.

00:13:13.840 --> 00:13:15.600
 It's talking about the Ark of the Covenant.

00:13:15.840 --> 00:13:18.580
 So the lid on top of the Ark of the Covenant, that's the mercy seat.

00:13:18.580 --> 00:13:21.180
 And so where did he need to go to do that?

00:13:22.639 --> 00:13:23.980
 Where is the mercy seat?

00:13:24.420 --> 00:13:29.180
 In the Holy of Holies.

00:13:29.179 --> 00:13:38.000
 So this is in the temple, but in the back of the temple of the tabernacle into the Holy of Holies where God most intensely dwelt.

00:13:38.000 --> 00:13:48.399
 So the high priest, once a year, had to bring the blood of the sacrifice into the most holy place, the Holy of Holies.

00:13:48.399 --> 00:13:54.459
 And that's where God's presence was kind of most directly present.

00:13:54.460 --> 00:13:57.500
 And what did he have to do?

00:13:57.500 --> 00:14:02.240
 He had to sprinkle the blood on the Ark of the Covenant, on the mercy seat on top of it.

00:14:02.240 --> 00:14:07.460
 And in the middle of the mercy seat, that's where God was meant to dwell most intensely.

00:14:09.039 --> 00:14:11.740
 And so what was he doing there?

00:14:11.799 --> 00:14:16.519
 He had to present the sacrifice to God.

00:14:17.379 --> 00:14:20.259
 So let's try and picture this.

00:14:20.340 --> 00:14:21.240
 It's always better to do that.

00:14:22.460 --> 00:14:22.899
 All right.

00:14:23.379 --> 00:14:25.120
 Just look at this left side for now, right?

00:14:27.340 --> 00:14:28.060
 It's not quite.

00:14:28.060 --> 00:14:31.039
 I don't think they're basketball courts in the Old Testament.

00:14:32.240 --> 00:14:32.860
 We don't know.

00:14:33.399 --> 00:14:33.840
 Okay.

00:14:34.060 --> 00:14:37.639
 So what you had, just look at this side for now.

00:14:38.159 --> 00:14:41.820
 So what you had is, so this is the tabernacle here.

00:14:42.379 --> 00:14:45.519
 So you had the most holy place, which was a square.

00:14:46.560 --> 00:14:48.680
 And in there, you had the Ark of the Covenant.

00:14:49.019 --> 00:14:52.000
 And on top of that, the living was called the mercy seat, right?

00:14:52.379 --> 00:14:57.440
 And right in the middle, that's where God was meant to dwell most intensely, right?

00:14:58.019 --> 00:14:58.320
 Okay.

00:14:58.320 --> 00:15:01.100
 You had a veil there, a big curtain.

00:15:01.100 --> 00:15:03.060
 Then you had the holy place.

00:15:03.120 --> 00:15:06.720
 There were other things that were in here, but just, we don't need to keep that up now.

00:15:06.980 --> 00:15:08.139
 Then you had the holy place.

00:15:08.200 --> 00:15:10.279
 You had the entrance into that.

00:15:10.340 --> 00:15:14.279
 So this is the tabernacle or the temple, right?

00:15:14.500 --> 00:15:15.440
 So it's just there.

00:15:15.440 --> 00:15:19.880
 And then, around it, you had here, the courtyard.

00:15:20.880 --> 00:15:26.880
 So for the tabernacle, it was like just a big curtain wall around it, okay?

00:15:27.060 --> 00:15:27.900
 You had the courtyard.

00:15:27.899 --> 00:15:33.779
 And just in front of the entrance of the tabernacle, you had the altar.

00:15:33.779 --> 00:15:35.699
 A big barbecue, right?

00:15:36.759 --> 00:15:42.759
 And then, just, and then here you had the entrance into the courtyard.

00:15:43.100 --> 00:15:46.220
 This is where all the preaching work would happen, all in this courtyard.

00:15:46.220 --> 00:15:54.580
 And outside of it, all around here, all around, you would have Israel's tents and dwelling places.

00:15:54.680 --> 00:15:56.740
 All the different tribes would be dotted around, okay?

00:15:57.720 --> 00:15:58.080
 Okay.

00:15:58.080 --> 00:16:02.139
 So, what would happen in the sacrificial system?

00:16:03.040 --> 00:16:07.220
 So, you would bring an animal into the courtyard.

00:16:08.200 --> 00:16:12.639
 It would be killed here, from the bloodshed there.

00:16:13.120 --> 00:16:18.700
 The priest would bring it onto the altar, burn it on the altar.

00:16:19.620 --> 00:16:23.420
 Then, that's not the end of the sacrificial process.

00:16:23.419 --> 00:16:31.899
 He would then, the priest, and if we just think about the day of atonement, the high priest, would take the blood of that sacrifice,

00:16:33.159 --> 00:16:37.919
 enter into the tabernacle, and not only into the holy place,

00:16:37.919 --> 00:16:46.240
 he would go through the veil, the curtain, into the most holy place, right into God's presence,

00:16:47.179 --> 00:16:49.679
 right to the Ark of the Covenant, on into the mercy seat,

00:16:49.679 --> 00:16:54.059
 and sprinkle the blood of the sacrifice onto the mercy seat.

00:16:54.819 --> 00:17:02.039
 So, kind of, over the years, blood would be, kind of, building up, caked onto that mercy seat, right?

00:17:04.119 --> 00:17:05.740
 So, that's the process.

00:17:06.379 --> 00:17:18.319
 So, coming through here, kill, burn, enter, through the veil, onto the mercy seat, with the blood.

00:17:19.680 --> 00:17:27.620
 And that, that whole process, that completed the process of atonement.

00:17:28.560 --> 00:17:35.140
 So, all of this, all of this, not just the blood and the burning and the killing,

00:17:35.560 --> 00:17:39.360
 all of this was involved in the process of atonement.

00:17:40.080 --> 00:17:43.920
 You need to do all of that for forgiveness to be achieved, okay?

00:17:43.920 --> 00:17:51.340
 And this is an important thing, but we don't often realise about what priests needed to do to make atonement.

00:17:52.360 --> 00:18:00.000
 So, there was two stages, if we simplify it, there were two stages for atonement and forgiveness to really be achieved.

00:18:00.740 --> 00:18:08.039
 First, the priest had to sacrifice, so remember last week, laying on of hands, kill the animal, burn the animal, okay?

00:18:08.039 --> 00:18:11.539
 That's the sacrifice part.

00:18:11.700 --> 00:18:16.099
 That's when all, kind of, the judgment and the demands would fall on the animal instead of the sinner.

00:18:16.379 --> 00:18:17.519
 That's propitiation.

00:18:18.079 --> 00:18:19.159
 We looked at that last week.

00:18:19.599 --> 00:18:22.579
 But then, that wasn't the end.

00:18:22.799 --> 00:18:28.599
 Then, the blood of that sacrifice needed to be brought to God.

00:18:28.599 --> 00:18:33.619
 And offered before God into his presence.

00:18:34.859 --> 00:18:38.059
 So, I just want to see here, just that, okay?

00:18:38.639 --> 00:18:40.459
 But both of these things are needed.

00:18:41.000 --> 00:18:45.419
 Both the sacrifice and both the offering, the presentation to God.

00:18:46.740 --> 00:18:49.139
 You need the death and you need the presentation.

00:18:49.539 --> 00:18:52.099
 Both are needed for forgiveness, atonement.

00:18:52.779 --> 00:18:53.019
 Okay?

00:18:53.279 --> 00:18:54.139
 Are we all on board there?

00:18:54.140 --> 00:18:59.620
 But let's ask, why this second part?

00:19:01.460 --> 00:19:07.560
 Well, because any sacrifice is made to God.

00:19:08.500 --> 00:19:09.080
 Right?

00:19:09.220 --> 00:19:10.920
 It's for him.

00:19:11.860 --> 00:19:14.060
 It's to be received by him.

00:19:14.380 --> 00:19:18.020
 If there was to be a right relationship between man and God,

00:19:18.759 --> 00:19:23.740
 and our sin is before God and it needs to be covered and forgiven,

00:19:24.140 --> 00:19:30.520
 then that sacrifice needs to go to God and be before God.

00:19:31.500 --> 00:19:35.480
 So, in one sense, if the animal was killed on the altar,

00:19:35.680 --> 00:19:37.000
 killed and burnt on the altar,

00:19:37.920 --> 00:19:42.460
 but it just stayed there, that was it.

00:19:43.180 --> 00:19:47.340
 In one sense, it wouldn't be any use.

00:19:47.339 --> 00:19:53.019
 It wouldn't make atonement because God never received it.

00:19:54.299 --> 00:19:56.879
 So to speak, he's never seen it, right?

00:19:58.699 --> 00:20:02.419
 So, our sin and guilt is before God in heaven.

00:20:02.899 --> 00:20:03.819
 It's in front of him.

00:20:04.019 --> 00:20:06.879
 His wrath is in heaven with him.

00:20:07.540 --> 00:20:11.780
 And so the sacrifice needs to be in heaven to cover that.

00:20:13.260 --> 00:20:16.420
 It needs to be kind of in front of him to propitiate that wrath.

00:20:18.360 --> 00:20:20.000
 So, or you can think of it this way.

00:20:21.160 --> 00:20:25.860
 The tabernacle or the temple, it was like a path to God.

00:20:26.859 --> 00:20:29.559
 So, a pathway for the sinner to come to God.

00:20:29.759 --> 00:20:31.479
 And you can kind of even see it, can't you?

00:20:31.839 --> 00:20:32.039
 Right?

00:20:32.759 --> 00:20:36.139
 You kind of come from the outside, from the wilderness.

00:20:37.039 --> 00:20:42.619
 And each stage, you're kind of approaching toward God more and more.

00:20:42.799 --> 00:20:42.979
 Right?

00:20:43.219 --> 00:20:47.279
 It's this direct line going to God's presence.

00:20:47.279 --> 00:20:50.599
 And so, with every stage closer toward God.

00:20:50.799 --> 00:20:55.740
 And the sacrifice, you kind of think it paves the way to get to God.

00:20:56.859 --> 00:21:00.119
 Kind of, it makes it safe for the sinner to get there.

00:21:01.160 --> 00:21:02.379
 So, it's killed in the courtyard.

00:21:02.940 --> 00:21:05.799
 Paves a safe path all the way into God's presence.

00:21:07.019 --> 00:21:09.119
 And so, where does it need to end up?

00:21:09.200 --> 00:21:12.059
 It needs to end up in God's presence.

00:21:12.059 --> 00:21:17.480
 Otherwise, the path isn't paved all the way there.

00:21:18.419 --> 00:21:22.639
 It needs to go into God's presence so that we can stand in God's presence.

00:21:24.659 --> 00:21:29.139
 So, if the sacrifice wasn't brought there, we couldn't stand there.

00:21:30.919 --> 00:21:33.079
 But there's a problem with the Old Testament system.

00:21:33.279 --> 00:21:34.359
 Look at Hebrews 9.

00:21:36.819 --> 00:21:39.960
 Into the second, the second section, the most holy place.

00:21:39.960 --> 00:21:42.819
 Into the second, only the high priest goes.

00:21:43.840 --> 00:21:45.360
 And he but once a year.

00:21:46.360 --> 00:21:47.940
 And not without taking blood.

00:21:48.039 --> 00:21:51.640
 Which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins of the people.

00:21:52.100 --> 00:21:58.559
 According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifice are offered that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshipper.

00:22:00.519 --> 00:22:02.059
 So, there's a lot going on here.

00:22:02.240 --> 00:22:03.220
 But just see this.

00:22:03.960 --> 00:22:09.460
 The high priest would only go to God once a year.

00:22:09.759 --> 00:22:09.840
 Right?

00:22:10.940 --> 00:22:13.360
 And he would sprinkle the blood of an animal.

00:22:13.940 --> 00:22:15.279
 And then, what would he have to do?

00:22:15.340 --> 00:22:16.259
 He'd have to go out again.

00:22:17.420 --> 00:22:19.519
 And then, he would need to come back the next year.

00:22:19.640 --> 00:22:20.500
 Bring more blood.

00:22:21.039 --> 00:22:22.500
 And then, go out again.

00:22:23.019 --> 00:22:23.980
 And then, wait another year.

00:22:24.039 --> 00:22:24.799
 Then, he would go back.

00:22:24.900 --> 00:22:25.980
 Okay, I've got to offer more blood.

00:22:26.519 --> 00:22:27.960
 Okay, but I need to leave now.

00:22:28.079 --> 00:22:28.720
 Okay, I'll leave.

00:22:29.120 --> 00:22:30.700
 And then, I'll come back again next year.

00:22:30.700 --> 00:22:36.900
 And so, if that priest was meant to bring us into God's presence.

00:22:36.900 --> 00:22:38.519
 To pave that way.

00:22:40.040 --> 00:22:41.519
 Could he really do that?

00:22:41.519 --> 00:22:43.420
 No.

00:22:43.420 --> 00:22:43.500
 No.

00:22:44.940 --> 00:22:48.920
 Because, well, firstly, we saw this last week.

00:22:49.119 --> 00:22:54.559
 He would only bring the blood of an animal, which wasn't good enough to offer to God anyway, to take away sin.

00:22:54.559 --> 00:22:59.119
 But, on top of that, he also had his own sins.

00:22:59.440 --> 00:23:02.220
 Which definitely means that his offering wasn't good enough.

00:23:02.259 --> 00:23:03.819
 He was offering it with dirty hands.

00:23:03.819 --> 00:23:10.779
 But, on top of that, the priest wouldn't even stay in God's presence.

00:23:12.119 --> 00:23:13.960
 He would come to God for a little bit.

00:23:14.799 --> 00:23:18.059
 And then, bring the people in for a day, so to speak.

00:23:18.439 --> 00:23:19.559
 But then, he'd have to leave.

00:23:20.799 --> 00:23:24.519
 So, he wasn't really paving the way to God.

00:23:26.119 --> 00:23:27.839
 It's like he would have a path for a day.

00:23:27.980 --> 00:23:30.200
 But, then, even then, it's not really working.

00:23:30.500 --> 00:23:32.859
 And, even then, it would disappear.

00:23:33.000 --> 00:23:33.700
 He'd have to leave.

00:23:33.819 --> 00:23:34.759
 And, come back next year.

00:23:36.339 --> 00:23:41.019
 This whole system was showing this isn't good enough.

00:23:42.099 --> 00:23:44.439
 It was showing we need something else.

00:23:44.779 --> 00:23:46.059
 What do you think we need?

00:23:47.359 --> 00:23:53.639
 We need a sinless priest to enter God's presence with clean hands.

00:23:54.960 --> 00:24:01.000
 We need him to present a sacrifice good enough to pay for the sins of the people.

00:24:01.000 --> 00:24:11.039
 And, we need that priest to enter God's presence with that sacrifice.

00:24:11.039 --> 00:24:12.039
 Sit down and stay there forever.

00:24:12.039 --> 00:24:21.119
 To permanently pave a way to God.

00:24:21.119 --> 00:24:26.119
 And, that is exactly what Christ has done.

00:24:26.119 --> 00:24:30.500
 But, he hasn't entered into the tabernacle.

00:24:30.500 --> 00:24:33.680
 He's entered into heaven itself.

00:24:33.680 --> 00:24:34.680
 So, look at Hebrews 9.

00:24:34.680 --> 00:24:36.320
 So, look at Hebrews 9.

00:24:36.320 --> 00:24:37.180
 11 to 12.

00:24:37.180 --> 00:24:47.360
 But, when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come.

00:24:47.359 --> 00:24:50.979
 Then, through the greater and more perfect tent.

00:24:50.979 --> 00:24:52.079
 Not made with hands.

00:24:52.079 --> 00:24:53.439
 That is, not of this creation.

00:24:53.599 --> 00:24:54.519
 It's not a tabernacle.

00:24:55.639 --> 00:24:59.379
 He entered once for all into the holy places.

00:24:59.380 --> 00:25:01.380
 He's talking about heaven here.

00:25:02.420 --> 00:25:04.740
 Not by means of the blood of goats and calves.

00:25:04.860 --> 00:25:06.900
 But, by means of his own blood.

00:25:07.260 --> 00:25:10.080
 Thus securing an eternal redemption.

00:25:11.840 --> 00:25:13.180
 And, look at Hebrews 9.24.

00:25:13.180 --> 00:25:18.080
 For, Christ has entered not into holy places made with hands.

00:25:18.200 --> 00:25:19.740
 Not into tents and temples.

00:25:20.360 --> 00:25:23.320
 Which are copies of the true things.

00:25:23.319 --> 00:25:27.179
 But, he's entered into heaven itself.

00:25:28.179 --> 00:25:31.019
 Now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf.

00:25:32.460 --> 00:25:33.200
 And, Hebrews 10.

00:25:33.480 --> 00:25:37.599
 But, when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins.

00:25:38.279 --> 00:25:41.019
 He sat down at the right hand of God.

00:25:43.059 --> 00:25:45.259
 So, look what it's highlighting here.

00:25:45.319 --> 00:25:47.700
 What did Christ do with his sacrifice?

00:25:49.019 --> 00:25:52.619
 What does every priest need to do with the sacrifice?

00:25:53.319 --> 00:25:55.979
 He went into God's presence.

00:25:56.979 --> 00:25:59.500
 And, presented that sacrifice to God.

00:26:01.000 --> 00:26:04.799
 But, it wasn't into the temple's holy place.

00:26:04.799 --> 00:26:05.899
 Or, the tabernacle's.

00:26:06.239 --> 00:26:07.500
 That was just a copy.

00:26:08.299 --> 00:26:10.819
 A picture of God's dwelling place in heaven.

00:26:11.119 --> 00:26:12.539
 Or, all the temple and the tabernacle.

00:26:13.099 --> 00:26:15.859
 It's just meant to be like a mini picture of heaven.

00:26:16.759 --> 00:26:18.199
 But, it's not the real thing.

00:26:19.819 --> 00:26:22.119
 And, so where did Christ present his sacrifice?

00:26:22.619 --> 00:26:25.259
 In heaven itself.

00:26:27.259 --> 00:26:28.759
 And, what was this sacrifice?

00:26:28.919 --> 00:26:29.639
 It wasn't a goat.

00:26:30.599 --> 00:26:32.279
 No, something infinitely better.

00:26:33.079 --> 00:26:33.679
 Himself.

00:26:33.680 --> 00:26:37.700
 40 days after his resurrection.

00:26:37.700 --> 00:26:40.120
 He went into heaven itself.

00:26:41.220 --> 00:26:43.820
 And, he stood before the Father and said,

00:26:44.259 --> 00:26:45.400
 Here I am, Father.

00:26:46.400 --> 00:26:51.100
 Here is the sacrifice that all your huge demands require.

00:26:51.099 --> 00:26:53.819
 And, look at these scars.

00:26:53.939 --> 00:26:54.980
 I've paid it all.

00:26:56.179 --> 00:26:59.139
 And, now the atonement is complete.

00:27:01.699 --> 00:27:03.279
 Jesus entered into heaven.

00:27:03.480 --> 00:27:04.599
 And, he paved the way.

00:27:04.719 --> 00:27:07.519
 Made it safe to go into God's true presence.

00:27:07.519 --> 00:27:10.139
 And, he brought us there with him.

00:27:11.660 --> 00:27:13.000
 So, think of it like this.

00:27:15.259 --> 00:27:15.740
 Jesus.

00:27:16.259 --> 00:27:18.059
 He came from among the people.

00:27:18.180 --> 00:27:19.740
 He was identified with the sinner.

00:27:20.579 --> 00:27:22.160
 He came from among the people.

00:27:22.160 --> 00:27:29.740
 He went to the altar of the sacrifice.

00:27:30.300 --> 00:27:32.200
 And, from there, what did he do?

00:27:33.080 --> 00:27:35.600
 He entered into heaven.

00:27:35.599 --> 00:27:40.399
 And, presented that sacrifice to God.

00:27:43.399 --> 00:27:45.719
 And, what is he doing in heaven?

00:27:47.159 --> 00:27:48.899
 He sat down.

00:27:50.579 --> 00:27:51.959
 Not going anywhere.

00:27:52.339 --> 00:27:57.579
 He is there to present his sacrifice permanently, forever.

00:27:59.000 --> 00:28:02.919
 So, not only is the sacrifice, the death itself, perfect.

00:28:02.920 --> 00:28:09.600
 But, also, he's now presenting it before God, always.

00:28:10.640 --> 00:28:11.200
 Permanently.

00:28:13.440 --> 00:28:15.200
 So, let me just summarise this.

00:28:15.380 --> 00:28:17.019
 Because, this isn't a familiar topic.

00:28:18.180 --> 00:28:23.380
 A sacrifice to God can't just be done in the past.

00:28:24.320 --> 00:28:26.120
 And, then kind of forgotten by God.

00:28:26.480 --> 00:28:28.860
 It's kind of a transaction done in the past.

00:28:28.940 --> 00:28:29.700
 And, then, okay, fine.

00:28:29.759 --> 00:28:30.820
 I'll forget about it now.

00:28:31.900 --> 00:28:32.340
 No.

00:28:32.920 --> 00:28:37.080
 For real atonement, the sacrifice needs to be made.

00:28:37.660 --> 00:28:39.440
 And, in Christ, it needs to be made once.

00:28:40.160 --> 00:28:43.120
 But, it can't be forgotten in the past.

00:28:44.320 --> 00:28:48.800
 It needs to be constantly, just like in the tabernacle.

00:28:49.180 --> 00:28:53.460
 It needs to be constantly and continually before God.

00:28:53.460 --> 00:28:58.220
 It's kind of as a reminder, constantly there before God, to be effective.

00:28:59.160 --> 00:29:00.980
 To complete the process.

00:29:00.980 --> 00:29:05.620
 Now, this is not to say, let me clarify here.

00:29:05.680 --> 00:29:09.620
 This is not to say that the cross wasn't enough.

00:29:10.579 --> 00:29:11.480
 No, absolutely not.

00:29:11.579 --> 00:29:12.860
 Never, ever think that.

00:29:13.740 --> 00:29:14.059
 No.

00:29:14.579 --> 00:29:17.360
 The cross was the once for all payment for sin.

00:29:17.539 --> 00:29:18.720
 Never to be repeated.

00:29:18.940 --> 00:29:19.380
 Perfect.

00:29:19.720 --> 00:29:20.160
 Glorious.

00:29:20.160 --> 00:29:21.860
 No more sacrifices.

00:29:21.860 --> 00:29:22.519
 Never again.

00:29:23.240 --> 00:29:25.300
 Jesus' death was good enough, okay?

00:29:25.299 --> 00:29:30.839
 But, that payment, it needs to be handed to God.

00:29:31.799 --> 00:29:34.940
 It needs to be before him, in his presence.

00:29:34.940 --> 00:29:42.860
 And, when that is done, when that process is complete, then atonement is complete.

00:29:44.220 --> 00:29:46.019
 And, so, you need both, right?

00:29:46.400 --> 00:29:48.740
 You need the sacrifice, and you need the presentation.

00:29:49.620 --> 00:29:50.720
 And, that's what Christ has done.

00:29:50.840 --> 00:29:54.220
 You need the cross, and you need the entrance into heaven.

00:29:58.440 --> 00:30:02.460
 And, this isn't just some kind of abstract Bible knowledge.

00:30:02.460 --> 00:30:05.720
 An interesting thing in Hebrews that we're being taught.

00:30:06.519 --> 00:30:10.319
 No, this is so important for us every single day.

00:30:11.440 --> 00:30:20.600
 Because, Christ presenting himself in heaven means that there is now unbreakable atonement.

00:30:22.079 --> 00:30:23.480
 Unending forgiveness.

00:30:24.559 --> 00:30:27.079
 And, constant mercy.

00:30:27.079 --> 00:30:57.079
 Unending forgiveness.

00:30:57.079 --> 00:30:58.079
 Unending forgiveness.

00:30:59.859 --> 00:31:06.319
 So, how did they do, forgive us in the Old Testament, if you wanted to give someone assurance, how would you do it there?

00:31:09.619 --> 00:31:10.819
 Or, was there no assurance?

00:31:11.059 --> 00:31:11.500
 You just...

00:31:11.500 --> 00:31:17.079
 I think the comfort, the assurance, you could say is...

00:31:18.879 --> 00:31:19.480
 So, okay.

00:31:19.659 --> 00:31:22.000
 Well, first of all, remember, were you here last week?

00:31:22.960 --> 00:31:23.299
 No.

00:31:23.299 --> 00:31:24.240
 No, you weren't, okay.

00:31:24.619 --> 00:31:25.700
 Well, for everyone at one.

00:31:27.180 --> 00:31:28.039
 Thank you for asking.

00:31:28.119 --> 00:31:28.619
 Yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:31:29.559 --> 00:31:30.899
 I'll take a register next time.

00:31:31.279 --> 00:31:32.720
 So, okay, remember to last week.

00:31:33.139 --> 00:31:38.759
 What was the priest wearing at all times, whenever he's doing this sacrificial process?

00:31:39.279 --> 00:31:45.319
 He's wearing two stones on his shoulders, and on those stones are all the names of the tribes of Israel.

00:31:45.819 --> 00:31:50.740
 And, he also had a breastplate with 12 stones on them, each with the name of the tribe of Israel.

00:31:50.740 --> 00:31:55.620
 He was carrying the people with him, presenting himself, right?

00:31:56.660 --> 00:32:00.279
 Representing them in whatever he does.

00:32:01.240 --> 00:32:10.519
 And so, I guess you could say the assurance is that when he is entering into God's presence, first of all, he's allowed.

00:32:11.019 --> 00:32:13.539
 He doesn't die when he enters.

00:32:13.539 --> 00:32:19.539
 So, that's what we're at least seeing, as soon as he goes in and then he comes out again.

00:32:19.579 --> 00:32:25.200
 If you're an Israelite, let's say you're an Israelite, and sadly can't be able to peer through on the day of the atonement.

00:32:25.339 --> 00:32:26.180
 What's going on there?

00:32:26.359 --> 00:32:31.299
 You see the high priest enter, and then he comes out again, and he's not dead.

00:32:31.299 --> 00:32:35.639
 You're thinking, wow, God's let him come in.

00:32:36.659 --> 00:32:40.680
 This atonement process, this is working.

00:32:41.440 --> 00:32:44.139
 Of course, we know it's only working because of the cross.

00:32:44.419 --> 00:32:45.680
 We saw that last week.

00:32:46.460 --> 00:32:49.039
 But God is providing atonement.

00:32:49.180 --> 00:32:53.299
 He is allowing humanity to come into his presence.

00:32:53.299 --> 00:32:55.599
 And it's not just one man.

00:32:55.819 --> 00:33:01.319
 When I see him going in, I'm seeing him with his breastplates and these stones on his shoulder.

00:33:01.680 --> 00:33:03.079
 He's going in with me.

00:33:03.279 --> 00:33:05.399
 I'm going in there into God's presence.

00:33:07.359 --> 00:33:11.779
 And so, I guess the assurance is that you can see it.

00:33:11.940 --> 00:33:17.319
 It's kind of this picture of we really are coming into God's presence through this priest.

00:33:19.000 --> 00:33:20.059
 Does that answer your question?

00:33:20.059 --> 00:33:20.279
 Yeah.

00:33:23.299 --> 00:33:27.559
 Let's move on to the third point.

00:33:27.659 --> 00:33:29.700
 A priest in heaven means unending forgiveness.

00:33:31.220 --> 00:33:34.139
 Look what John says having Christ in heaven means.

00:33:34.240 --> 00:33:35.019
 What 1 John 2.

00:33:36.740 --> 00:33:41.779
 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin.

00:33:42.720 --> 00:33:48.139
 But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father.

00:33:49.099 --> 00:33:50.599
 Jesus Christ, the righteous.

00:33:50.599 --> 00:33:54.039
 He is the propitiation for our sins.

00:33:56.099 --> 00:33:58.719
 What does John say Jesus is right now?

00:33:59.740 --> 00:34:01.559
 He's our advocate in heaven.

00:34:03.099 --> 00:34:07.879
 Now, an advocate is just someone who argues the case for someone else.

00:34:08.019 --> 00:34:08.159
 Right?

00:34:08.159 --> 00:34:10.859
 So, a lawyer is an advocate.

00:34:11.420 --> 00:34:12.859
 So, someone to plead your defence.

00:34:13.019 --> 00:34:13.920
 Make your case.

00:34:14.259 --> 00:34:14.960
 Protect you.

00:34:15.139 --> 00:34:15.299
 Right?

00:34:16.719 --> 00:34:17.699
 Well, what does John say?

00:34:17.980 --> 00:34:23.719
 Jesus is that for us when we sin.

00:34:23.719 --> 00:34:29.179
 He defends us, argues our case for us before the Father.

00:34:29.179 --> 00:34:34.639
 Making sure that when we sin, our sins are always met with forgiveness.

00:34:34.639 --> 00:34:39.259
 But how can he make that case for us?

00:34:39.299 --> 00:34:40.659
 Well, what case is he making?

00:34:42.259 --> 00:34:47.099
 Well, he has the most perfect and unfailing case to present before the Father.

00:34:48.500 --> 00:34:49.420
 It's himself.

00:34:51.299 --> 00:34:56.239
 He is the evidence that our sins are forgiven.

00:34:56.239 --> 00:35:03.559
 He's the proof that we have the right to be forgiven for every single sin that we commit.

00:35:04.699 --> 00:35:08.619
 And that evidence is now permanently and ever before the Father.

00:35:10.359 --> 00:35:12.599
 And so, yes, we are forgiven on the cross.

00:35:13.000 --> 00:35:13.659
 A hundred percent.

00:35:14.519 --> 00:35:16.579
 That verdict was declared on the cross.

00:35:16.579 --> 00:35:21.759
 So, if you want to know the verdict on you, you Christian, you can look at the cross.

00:35:22.199 --> 00:35:23.000
 That's the verdict.

00:35:23.119 --> 00:35:24.480
 It's all being paid on Christ.

00:35:25.860 --> 00:35:29.079
 But in heaven, kind of think of it like this.

00:35:29.519 --> 00:35:32.960
 That verdict is constantly being declared for you.

00:35:34.599 --> 00:35:41.400
 Which is why, when we sin, that that sin is actively and constantly forgiven.

00:35:41.400 --> 00:35:44.840
 It's like on the cross.

00:35:45.480 --> 00:35:47.160
 Forgiveness was achieved.

00:35:48.139 --> 00:35:52.820
 And now in heaven, he just applies it to every single sin that we commit.

00:35:55.180 --> 00:35:56.260
 So, just think.

00:35:57.240 --> 00:36:00.660
 Whenever we sin, and we do every day.

00:36:01.780 --> 00:36:05.800
 Whenever we sin, Jesus is in heaven right now.

00:36:05.800 --> 00:36:14.120
 We're still constantly and continually and forever pleading on our behalf to the Father.

00:36:15.440 --> 00:36:18.440
 It's like he's saying, as our sins go up.

00:36:19.240 --> 00:36:25.420
 He's saying, Father, all these sins that my people commit, all of them are forgiven.

00:36:26.940 --> 00:36:27.740
 Look at me.

00:36:27.880 --> 00:36:28.780
 Look at my sacrifice.

00:36:28.960 --> 00:36:29.920
 Look at my hands.

00:36:32.019 --> 00:36:33.740
 Look what I've brought to you.

00:36:33.739 --> 00:36:35.839
 Look at all these scars.

00:36:36.039 --> 00:36:38.879
 All these sins have been paid for.

00:36:40.239 --> 00:36:45.239
 That sin that she's just committed there, that she's just done, it's forgiven.

00:36:46.319 --> 00:36:51.919
 All that sin that they're confessing in church every Sunday, that's all been atoned for.

00:36:51.979 --> 00:36:52.959
 Because look at me.

00:36:55.659 --> 00:36:58.199
 And so Jesus being in heaven is so important.

00:36:58.199 --> 00:37:04.039
 Firstly, this means God is never angry at you.

00:37:05.559 --> 00:37:12.599
 Because your sacrifice on your behalf, your advocate, the proof of your forgiveness,

00:37:13.899 --> 00:37:18.179
 is always and forever in heaven before God.

00:37:18.179 --> 00:37:24.099
 It's a permanent reminder in the justice of God that you're forgiven.

00:37:25.799 --> 00:37:32.899
 God isn't actually kind of, he's not actually angry with you, but kind of Jesus is there to kind of twist his arm,

00:37:34.059 --> 00:37:37.759
 kind of plead your case, kind of hoping for a nice response from God.

00:37:37.760 --> 00:37:45.860
 No, because Jesus is in heaven, that is the guarantee that God is now never, ever angry with you.

00:37:47.220 --> 00:37:50.180
 Because he always sees this.

00:37:51.420 --> 00:37:52.820
 Or think of it this way.

00:37:53.740 --> 00:37:59.680
 God never sees your sin because now he only ever sees Christ.

00:37:59.679 --> 00:38:05.799
 But also, this means you can never lose forgiveness.

00:38:07.379 --> 00:38:14.739
 So if our forgiveness is based on Christ being in heaven, remember that's all a part of the process, right?

00:38:16.599 --> 00:38:21.219
 Then that means we can only lose forgiveness if he stops being a priest.

00:38:23.139 --> 00:38:27.219
 But remember back to the beginning, how long will Christ be a priest for?

00:38:28.419 --> 00:38:28.859
 Forever.

00:38:29.679 --> 00:38:33.259
 So how long are you forgiven for?

00:38:34.579 --> 00:38:35.259
 Forever.

00:38:36.460 --> 00:38:41.179
 Our salvation is unbreakable because of this.

00:38:43.000 --> 00:38:45.099
 And finally, let me end on this.

00:38:45.319 --> 00:38:48.099
 Christ being in heaven means Christ can save anybody.

00:38:49.319 --> 00:38:50.419
 So look at Hebrews 7.

00:38:51.879 --> 00:38:57.159
 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him.

00:38:57.159 --> 00:38:58.739
 Since he always lives in heaven.

00:38:58.739 --> 00:39:00.379
 Since he always lives in heaven.

00:39:00.379 --> 00:39:03.480
 He always lives to make intercession for them.

00:39:05.059 --> 00:39:06.579
 Do you see the point here?

00:39:07.440 --> 00:39:12.859
 Because Christ always lives in heaven and he's there to make intercession, to be our advocate.

00:39:12.860 --> 00:39:17.360
 He's now able to save to the uttermost.

00:39:17.360 --> 00:39:19.340
 To the extreme.

00:39:19.340 --> 00:39:23.400
 He's able to save the worst sinner with the most severe sin.

00:39:23.400 --> 00:39:30.380
 Because if that sinner comes to Christ, what does he meet?

00:39:32.139 --> 00:39:35.680
 Unending, perpetual, unbreakable forgiveness.

00:39:35.679 --> 00:39:42.440
 There is now just this unending source of mercy for sinners.

00:39:42.440 --> 00:39:49.519
 There is no sinner too bad to be saved by Christ.

00:39:49.519 --> 00:39:53.119
 But also, this goes for us.

00:39:54.340 --> 00:39:59.300
 Because when we come to Christ with our sin and our weakness and our failures.

00:40:00.480 --> 00:40:04.239
 When we commit that same sin again and again.

00:40:04.360 --> 00:40:06.500
 And we just can't believe we've done that again.

00:40:07.599 --> 00:40:12.719
 And we come to Jesus with our sin and we confess it and lay it before him.

00:40:12.940 --> 00:40:15.320
 What do we meet when we do that?

00:40:15.320 --> 00:40:24.460
 He doesn't say, oh, not that again.

00:40:25.500 --> 00:40:29.300
 No, you can now never reach the limits of his forgiveness.

00:40:31.820 --> 00:40:36.880
 And so this is why it is so important that Jesus is still a priest in heaven.

00:40:38.300 --> 00:40:40.220
 His sacrifice on the cross is perfect.

00:40:40.219 --> 00:40:45.939
 And now Jesus presents that sacrifice constantly in heaven.

00:40:46.819 --> 00:40:48.859
 Ensuring our sins are always forgiven.

00:40:50.099 --> 00:40:54.839
 And so through him, we can now always approach God.

00:40:56.000 --> 00:40:58.519
 Boldly and with confidence.

00:40:59.500 --> 00:41:02.539
 Because he's now paved the way.

00:41:03.779 --> 00:41:06.519
 And we now have a priest forever.

00:41:06.519 --> 00:41:12.440
 I'll end there and open up to questions for a few minutes.

00:41:15.800 --> 00:41:16.539
 Yeah, General.

00:41:17.599 --> 00:41:18.639
 Yeah, two questions.

00:41:18.699 --> 00:41:19.039
 Yeah, yeah.

00:41:19.039 --> 00:41:23.039
 So, um, there's a voice in the intercession.

00:41:23.559 --> 00:41:27.239
 In relation to the appreciation, I guess, the sacrifice has been made.

00:41:27.340 --> 00:41:27.539
 Yeah.

00:41:27.699 --> 00:41:28.539
 To give us that together.

00:41:28.780 --> 00:41:29.199
 Yeah, yeah.

00:41:29.480 --> 00:41:30.259
 It's a really good question.

00:41:30.260 --> 00:41:35.260
 So, um, first question was, uh,

00:41:35.260 --> 00:41:35.600
 what do you think about the confession of sin?

00:41:35.600 --> 00:41:40.720
 Um, what is the purpose of the confession?

00:41:40.900 --> 00:41:44.160
 It's not that the confession that gets us at the beginning is the sacrifice.

00:41:44.720 --> 00:41:44.900
 Yeah.

00:41:44.900 --> 00:41:45.000
 Yeah.

00:41:45.000 --> 00:41:47.220
 Like, there's a very good question.

00:41:47.420 --> 00:41:49.080
 Like, could all that confession of sin?

00:41:49.240 --> 00:41:50.160
 Or, like, yeah, I would.

00:41:50.540 --> 00:41:51.720
 But the second question.

00:41:51.720 --> 00:41:54.080
 Yeah, no, no, no.

00:41:54.080 --> 00:41:54.900
 That's a good question.

00:41:54.900 --> 00:42:01.079
 Um, so, so, so, uh, first question was, uh, what is intercession?

00:42:01.200 --> 00:42:04.039
 How does that relate to propitiation, which happened on the cross?

00:42:04.240 --> 00:42:07.220
 So, so intercession, it means a few things.

00:42:07.300 --> 00:42:13.000
 One is, um, uh, let's keep it kind of specific to today.

00:42:13.119 --> 00:42:17.079
 It is this, uh, advocacy that John's talking about, right?

00:42:17.079 --> 00:42:19.039
 It's, it's pleading on our behalf.

00:42:19.139 --> 00:42:31.840
 It's, it's, uh, uh, the intercession is whenever our sin, whenever we sin, Christ is always there presenting to the father, um, his sacrifice himself.

00:42:31.840 --> 00:42:32.179
 Right?

00:42:32.500 --> 00:42:41.679
 So it's kind of this, uh, it's this constant, um, this is this constant flow of forgiveness, always meeting the needs of our sin.

00:42:41.779 --> 00:42:42.019
 Right?

00:42:42.019 --> 00:42:47.659
 And so how does propitiation, the one time propitiation on the cross relate to that?

00:42:47.900 --> 00:42:51.619
 You can kind of think of it, it's achieved on the cross, right?

00:42:52.619 --> 00:43:06.659
 But, uh, but, but it's in real time as we're sinning, uh, uh, in our lives, it's kind of that what's achieved on the cross is now applied and covered and, and reaches every need of our sin.

00:43:06.860 --> 00:43:07.259
 Okay?

00:43:07.259 --> 00:43:10.840
 So kind of think of achieving it and then applying it constantly.

00:43:11.199 --> 00:43:11.300
 Right?

00:43:11.300 --> 00:43:15.880
 Not to say that it isn't forgiven as we're sinning.

00:43:15.980 --> 00:43:18.519
 And then he kind of, okay, now I need to forgive it again.

00:43:18.620 --> 00:43:21.860
 It's, it's just, it's this constant process.

00:43:21.980 --> 00:43:27.800
 It's like that there's never a, there's never a moment where it's not forgiven because it's always there and flowing.

00:43:27.980 --> 00:43:28.180
 Right?

00:43:28.740 --> 00:43:28.940
 Yeah.

00:43:29.539 --> 00:43:33.760
 Um, uh, second question, what, why confess our sin?

00:43:33.760 --> 00:43:42.060
 Well, firstly, it's not, it's not so that it can be forgiven just for the same reason I've just said.

00:43:42.440 --> 00:43:42.800
 Right?

00:43:43.420 --> 00:43:51.440
 Um, it's, uh, so we, we need to understand sin and atonement is not a mathematical equation.

00:43:51.440 --> 00:43:52.020
 Right?

00:43:52.019 --> 00:43:56.500
 Like we are still in covenant in relation with God.

00:43:56.500 --> 00:44:00.099
 And so what does that require?

00:44:01.179 --> 00:44:04.000
 Like being right with God, it means being open with God.

00:44:04.000 --> 00:44:08.179
 Uh, and so there are two things we can do with our sin, right?

00:44:08.179 --> 00:44:08.179

00:44:08.179 --> 00:44:09.579
 We can either hide it.

00:44:10.340 --> 00:44:13.380
 And when that happens, it crushes us.

00:44:13.519 --> 00:44:14.400
 It weighs on us.

00:44:14.519 --> 00:44:15.619
 It eats away at us.

00:44:15.739 --> 00:44:17.300
 It makes the sin worse.

00:44:17.400 --> 00:44:18.960
 We'll likely fall into it again.

00:44:18.960 --> 00:44:24.679
 Or we can bring it to God and be open to God about it.

00:44:25.199 --> 00:44:26.260
 And what do we meet?

00:44:26.400 --> 00:44:30.699
 We meet assurance and forgiveness, his words of comfort.

00:44:31.320 --> 00:44:34.139
 Uh, and, and that burden is taken off us.

00:44:34.340 --> 00:44:36.400
 And so sin dies in the light.

00:44:36.900 --> 00:44:40.960
 Um, and so that's why we confess our sin.

00:44:41.079 --> 00:44:42.480
 It's, it's about this.

00:44:42.820 --> 00:44:43.039
 Yeah.

00:44:43.440 --> 00:44:45.139
 Being right with God every day.

00:44:45.139 --> 00:44:49.219
 Not in terms of we weren't right with him because the cross wasn't good enough.

00:44:49.400 --> 00:44:51.659
 It's about, it's about our conscience.

00:44:52.159 --> 00:44:52.639
 Uh, yeah.

00:44:52.739 --> 00:44:55.359
 Our, our, our relation to him being in covenant with him.

00:44:55.539 --> 00:44:55.659
 Yeah.

00:44:56.839 --> 00:44:57.539
 Is that helpful?

00:44:57.539 --> 00:44:57.799
 Yeah.

00:45:04.799 --> 00:45:05.239
 Great.

00:45:05.500 --> 00:45:06.519
 I'll, I'll close in prayer.

00:45:15.139 --> 00:45:19.619
 Lord God, we praise you for the Lord Jesus Christ.

00:45:20.339 --> 00:45:23.159
 Our priest in heaven forever.

00:45:24.299 --> 00:45:28.500
 Who stands before you with the perfect sacrifice of himself.

00:45:29.139 --> 00:45:31.379
 Who pleads on our behalf.

00:45:32.440 --> 00:45:34.579
 Who meets our every need.

00:45:35.159 --> 00:45:37.599
 Who is the source of unending forgiveness.

00:45:38.679 --> 00:45:41.279
 And so Lord, we, we praise you for the Lord Jesus Christ.

00:45:41.280 --> 00:45:47.160
 And would we be greatly comforted knowing that when we do sin, that our sin is always met with forgiveness.

00:45:48.320 --> 00:45:52.900
 That you are a merciful God, that we have a high priest who has paved the way.

00:45:54.060 --> 00:45:57.040
 And that way can never be ended, can never be broken for us.

00:45:58.019 --> 00:46:00.780
 Would we have great comfort and assurance of that today.

00:46:01.840 --> 00:46:04.760
 And so we thank you for the Lord Jesus Christ, our great high priest.

00:46:04.920 --> 00:46:05.580
 In his name.

00:46:05.900 --> 00:46:06.200
 Amen.

00:46:11.280 --> 00:46:41.260
 Amen.

00:46:41.260 --> 00:46:42.200
 Say it again.

00:46:43.940 --> 00:46:45.120
 Oh, you've done that.
