00:02:04.379 Hopefully, we will read something in the Bible related to this good news, this big news during 00:02:04.379 --> 00:02:05.299 the Christmas season. 00:02:05.299 --> 00:02:09.639 And if we will, we can't help but see it. 00:02:09.740 --> 00:02:11.199 It comes through loud and clear. 00:02:12.020 --> 00:02:14.879 I want you to look at two examples at the beginning of this time. 00:02:16.000 --> 00:02:23.300 In Matthew's gospel, the angel of the Lord said this to Joseph, she will bear a son and 00:02:23.300 --> 00:02:28.479 you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. 00:02:28.479 --> 00:02:38.639 Then in Luke's gospel, the angel Gabriel explained to Mary who Jesus was. 00:02:40.079 --> 00:02:45.039 He will be great and be called the Son of the Most High. 00:02:45.799 --> 00:02:50.019 And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David. 00:02:50.539 --> 00:02:53.439 And he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. 00:02:53.439 --> 00:02:57.459 And of his kingdom, there will be no end. 00:02:57.460 --> 00:03:07.920 It's true that the Christmas story is found in just a small section of the Bible. 00:03:08.920 --> 00:03:17.240 I mean, the true Christmas story, the events that took place in Bethlehem before and during 00:03:17.240 --> 00:03:23.200 right after the birth of Jesus, they're only found in Matthew's gospel and in Luke's gospel. 00:03:23.199 --> 00:03:32.039 But what we need to remember as God's people, the Christmas story in the Bible really began 00:03:32.039 --> 00:03:34.379 hundreds of years earlier. 00:03:35.659 --> 00:03:37.759 It begins in the Old Testament. 00:03:38.519 --> 00:03:46.079 Old Testament prophets wrote about a coming Savior, the Messiah. 00:03:46.080 --> 00:03:51.620 One of the best known prophecies is found in Isaiah chapter 9. 00:03:52.300 --> 00:03:54.320 And I'd like for you to turn with me to that chapter. 00:03:55.020 --> 00:04:02.240 And what we're going to look at this morning is something that is very familiar to most Christians 00:04:02.240 --> 00:04:06.680 because we sing about this every year at Christmas. 00:04:06.680 --> 00:04:17.920 writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Isaiah described the power and glory of the coming Messiah, 00:04:18.319 --> 00:04:19.879 the coming Savior. 00:04:20.400 --> 00:04:24.879 In chapter 9, what we're going to look at is verses 6 and 7. 00:04:24.879 --> 00:04:38.819 What I want us to see is the special names or titles that are used to describe this coming Savior. 00:04:39.819 --> 00:04:46.800 Our government and of peace, there will be no end. 00:06:20.800 --> 00:06:23.480 On the throne of David and over His kingdom, 00:06:24.140 --> 00:06:29.440 to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness, 00:06:29.439 --> 00:06:33.439 from this time forth and forevermore. 00:06:33.439 --> 00:06:39.379 The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. 00:06:40.480 --> 00:06:46.959 This prophecy explains how the coming Messiah that we know, 00:06:47.819 --> 00:06:49.779 as we read back into the New Testament, 00:06:50.659 --> 00:06:51.740 is Jesus Christ. 00:06:51.740 --> 00:06:59.319 This prophecy tells how He will reign in power, in glory. 00:07:00.400 --> 00:07:03.500 It says the government shall be upon His shoulder, 00:07:04.220 --> 00:07:07.319 and that it will be His government. 00:07:08.600 --> 00:07:15.100 Now, that prophecy is only partially fulfilled at this time. 00:07:16.139 --> 00:07:17.560 Think with me like this. 00:07:17.560 --> 00:07:22.639 When grew up and taught and did the things that we read about 00:07:40.360 --> 00:07:42.000 in the New Testament in the Gospels, 00:07:42.000 --> 00:07:48.879 when He died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins, 00:07:49.779 --> 00:07:53.240 and rose triumphantly from death, 00:07:54.819 --> 00:07:57.079 and then ascended into heaven, 00:07:58.360 --> 00:08:04.279 and then sent His Holy Spirit to indwell all of His people, 00:08:04.279 --> 00:08:09.619 that was Jesus coming in power, 00:08:09.619 --> 00:08:11.079 in glory, in power, in glory, 00:08:12.199 --> 00:08:15.719 to reign, to rule, listen to this, 00:08:17.539 --> 00:08:21.099 in the lives of those who believe in Him, 00:08:22.379 --> 00:08:27.899 in the lives of those in whom God has called to faith in Him. 00:08:27.899 --> 00:08:34.340 This is like the first coming of Jesus. 00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:41.459 It's sort of like a secret or invisible kingdom 00:08:41.459 --> 00:08:46.059 that He has established, that God has established. 00:08:46.059 --> 00:08:50.339 We, as Christians, 00:08:51.339 --> 00:08:53.839 are citizens of that kingdom. 00:08:55.539 --> 00:08:57.079 God is our God. 00:08:57.239 --> 00:08:59.359 Christ is our Savior and our Lord. 00:09:01.759 --> 00:09:03.519 But Christ rules 00:09:03.519 --> 00:09:06.339 in our lives 00:09:06.339 --> 00:09:10.159 us who believe in Him. 00:09:10.159 --> 00:09:13.919 People outside the church, 00:09:14.319 --> 00:09:15.100 the real church, 00:09:15.360 --> 00:09:16.139 the people of God, 00:09:17.019 --> 00:09:18.819 they don't acknowledge Jesus as King. 00:09:19.519 --> 00:09:22.620 They don't acknowledge God's rule, 00:09:22.939 --> 00:09:24.419 God's authority. 00:09:25.579 --> 00:09:28.059 That's just for us right now. 00:09:29.539 --> 00:11:10.800 power, and authority 00:11:10.800 --> 00:11:13.320 of our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:11:13.320 --> 00:11:16.100 these names help us to understand 00:11:16.100 --> 00:11:18.420 why He can be earthly ministry, 00:12:30.179 --> 00:12:32.500 the way that He related to people, 00:12:32.599 --> 00:12:33.659 the things that He taught, 00:12:34.139 --> 00:12:35.319 He demonstrated 00:12:35.319 --> 00:12:39.500 that He is wonderful counselor 00:12:39.500 --> 00:12:43.039 by the wise teaching 00:12:43.039 --> 00:12:44.819 and counsel He gave to people. 00:12:46.819 --> 00:12:49.559 Jesus always knew exactly 00:12:49.559 --> 00:12:51.239 what to say 00:12:51.239 --> 00:12:53.839 and how to say it to people. 00:12:55.539 --> 00:12:55.839 I mean, 00:12:55.899 --> 00:12:57.099 if you stop and think about it, 00:12:57.159 --> 00:12:57.759 most of you, 00:12:57.859 --> 00:12:59.419 you've read the Gospels. 00:13:00.079 --> 00:13:01.359 Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. 00:13:01.559 -->
