really struck me is that 00:05:14.239 --> 00:05:16.959 they're giving what they want for their funeral. 00:05:16.959 --> 00:05:22.439 And one of the men said that he didn't want a pregnant woman for the rigorists of Jesus' time, 00:05:35.800 --> 00:05:37.819 they would have deeply understood that. 00:05:38.720 --> 00:05:42.019 And so for the rigorists, the Jewish rigorists 00:05:42.019 --> 00:05:44.000 who would have been hearing this story about Jesus, 00:05:44.759 --> 00:05:49.420 the fact that Jesus in a moment is going to unbelievably cross 00:05:49.420 --> 00:05:52.439 a whole pile of cultural divides 00:05:52.439 --> 00:05:58.319 and ask a woman of Samaria who's obviously an immoral woman 00:05:58.319 --> 00:06:02.620 that her cup would be the cup that Jesus would take 00:06:02.620 --> 00:06:04.720 to drink water out of a Samaritan well 00:06:04.720 --> 00:06:08.600 would have just been the most shocking and astounding thing 00:06:08.600 --> 00:06:12.500 as the Jewish rigorists of the day would have been reading this story. 00:06:13.139 --> 00:06:16.839 So we see that the story itself, as we read through, 00:06:17.040 --> 00:06:20.319 John, in fact, purposely puts the story of Nicodemus 00:06:20.319 --> 00:06:23.259 beside the story of the woman of Samaria, 00:06:23.779 --> 00:06:27.300 partially to illustrate that Jesus is making relative 00:06:27.300 --> 00:06:30.219 these distinctions that we all, in fact, 00:06:30.500 --> 00:06:32.459 need to come to Jesus. 00:06:33.180 --> 00:06:34.060 So let's read along. 00:06:34.579 --> 00:07:36.879 --> 00:07:39.120 with the help of the Roman Catholic hierarchy, 00:07:39.299 --> 00:07:41.259 which there was no Roman Catholic Church then, 00:07:41.259 --> 00:07:43.779 there was just the church, but that's another error, 00:07:44.120 --> 00:07:46.560 that they somehow enforced 00:07:46.560 --> 00:07:51.219 this misleading idea of Jesus being God upon the people. 00:07:52.039 --> 00:07:53.899 Actually, this verse here that we just read 00:07:53.899 --> 00:07:57.480 is what in fact shows that the exact opposite 00:07:57.480 --> 00:07:59.560 was in fact the case for the first three centuries. 00:07:59.939 --> 00:08:01.240 For the first three centuries, 00:08:01.240 --> 00:08:04.659 most people had problems believing that Jesus was a man. 00:08:05.659 --> 00:08:08.759 They had a very, very easy time believing that he was God, 00:08:08.759 --> 00:08:09.939 those who were Christians, 00:08:10.259 --> 00:08:12.740 they had a very hard time believing that he was man. 00:08:13.159 --> 00:08:16.199 So this text here where it says that Jesus was tired, 00:08:17.120 --> 00:08:19.899 that's one of the texts that for early Christians 00:08:19.899 --> 00:08:22.420 they got into big theological debates about 00:08:22.420 --> 00:08:24.480 because it was impossible for them to believe 00:08:24.480 --> 00:08:27.099 that Jesus being God could ever be tired. 00:08:28.139 --> 00:08:31.039 And so in fact, the early centuries of the church, 00:08:31.159 --> 00:08:32.539 it's the complete opposite 00:08:32.539 --> 00:08:35.759 of what the Da Vinci Code tries to paint. 00:08:35.759 --> 00:08:39.919 But here we see Jesus, just a very, very normal, 00:08:40.220 --> 00:08:42.620 like completely and utterly obvious image. 00:08:43.159 --> 00:08:45.019 He's been walking for several hours. 00:08:45.539 --> 00:08:46.159 It's noon. 00:08:46.539 --> 00:08:47.559 It's the heat of the day. 00:08:47.840 --> 00:08:49.120 He finally stops. 00:08:49.519 --> 00:08:50.679 He sits by the well. 00:08:51.120 --> 00:08:53.159 He's tired and he's thirsty. 00:08:53.600 --> 00:08:54.120 Verse seven. 00:08:54.759 --> 00:08:56.819 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. 00:09:36.700 --> 00:09:39.480 and they talk to a woman by the name of Lydia 00:09:39.480 --> 00:09:41.379 and they share the gospel with her 00:09:41.379 --> 00:09:43.240 and Lydia comes to faith. 00:09:43.720 --> 00:09:44.240 And you know, we don't, 00:09:44.340 --> 00:09:45.639 it doesn't really jump out at us, 00:09:46.360 --> 00:09:49.180 but that simple story 00:09:49.180 --> 00:09:52.020 of Paul sharing the gospel with Lydia 00:09:52.020 --> 00:09:54.540 is how Christianity enters Europe. 00:09:54.539 --> 00:09:57.000 So it's really quite astounding. 00:09:57.120 --> 00:09:59.399 The entire shape of the history of the world 00:09:59.399 --> 00:10:02.179 is changed and just very simply told 00:10:02.179 --> 00:10:03.099 in the book of Acts 00:10:03.099 --> 00:10:05.799 of Paul Astounding. 00:10:13.719 --> 00:10:17.319 And here we see that the first Samaritan 00:10:17.319 --> 00:10:18.980 who is to become a Christian, 00:10:19.799 --> 00:10:21.259 who is to come to Jesus,
