direction for the same purpose? 00:06:40.419 --> 00:06:44.479 And I kind of think about my experience as a cross-country coach or as a pastor 00:06:44.480 --> 00:06:51.300 as like one one millionth of what Moses must have been feeling here at the edge of the promised land, 00:06:51.379 --> 00:06:54.879 trying to get the people of God up to that starting line 00:06:54.879 --> 00:06:58.980 and ready to move into the race that God had marked out for them. 00:06:58.980 --> 00:07:01.819 Because that's what is happening in Deuteronomy. 00:07:02.520 --> 00:07:08.480 Moses is getting the next generations of the people of God ready to run this race with perseverance 00:07:08.480 --> 00:07:12.560 and with joy that God has set out before them. 00:07:13.040 --> 00:07:18.200 And Jesus, I think, as we talked last week, he loved this book so much. 00:07:18.920 --> 00:07:21.180 Quoted this book more than any other book, I think, 00:07:21.259 --> 00:07:26.900 because it's such a clear revelation of who his father is. 00:07:27.379 --> 00:07:31.780 Such a clear revelation of the character and the nature of God, 00:07:31.879 --> 00:07:33.720 of his heart and his will for us, 00:07:33.720 --> 00:07:36.600 of what he wants from us, his people, 00:07:36.600 --> 00:07:42.360 how he wants us to run this race that he's setting before us. 00:07:42.400 --> 00:07:45.920 So with that, let's dive in this morning to Deuteronomy 4 00:07:45.920 --> 00:07:52.060 and this great farewell address from Moses in the last month of his life. 00:07:52.140 --> 00:07:54.640 What does he have to say to the people of God? 00:07:55.180 --> 00:07:58.860 And I think here in Deuteronomy 4, he wants us to know 00:07:58.860 --> 00:08:13.480 that our mysterious God has a jealous love that makes us different. 00:08:13.939 --> 00:08:19.600 And I want to explore for a minute the fact that we have a mysterious God 00:08:19.600 --> 00:08:21.939 because Moses says in verse 10, 00:08:21.939 --> 00:08:23.379 he says, 00:08:23.379 --> 00:08:27.120 Remember the day you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb, 00:08:27.219 --> 00:08:28.620 that is Mount Sinai. 00:08:30.620 --> 00:08:33.440 Remember that day when he said to me, 00:08:33.639 --> 00:08:35.940 assemble the people before me to hear my words 00:08:35.940 --> 00:08:38.460 so that they may learn to revere me 00:08:38.460 --> 00:08:39.980 as long as they live in the land 00:08:39.980 --> 00:08:42.100 and may teach them to their children. 00:08:42.500 --> 00:08:45.960 The people of God had two intense encounters 00:08:45.960 --> 00:08:48.379 with Yahweh, with the Lord. 00:08:48.379 --> 00:08:53.120 And these were their primary sources of their knowledge of God. 00:08:53.340 --> 00:08:55.860 The one experience was the exodus from Egypt. 00:08:56.600 --> 00:08:58.539 And the other experience was the covenant 00:08:58.539 --> 00:09:00.820 that God made with them at Sinai. 00:09:00.879 --> 00:09:03.679 And this formed the framework for Israel's faith, 00:09:03.779 --> 00:09:06.080 just as for the Christian paradigm 00:09:06.080 --> 00:09:08.899 as the incarnation of Jesus on the one hand 00:09:08.899 --> 00:09:12.379 and the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus on the other hand. 00:09:12.419 --> 00:09:14.460 And Moses is inviting us into this framework. 00:09:14.460 --> 00:09:20.259 He's inviting us to relive this moment at Mount Sinai 00:09:20.259 --> 00:09:23.879 because this defining foundational event 00:09:23.879 --> 00:09:27.100 was a profoundly moving experience 00:09:27.100 --> 00:09:30.100 of the mysterious presence of the Lord. 00:09:31.040 --> 00:09:33.200 And Moses, as he helps us remember it, 00:09:33.680 --> 00:09:35.220 he's emphatic that God, 00:09:35.360 --> 00:09:39.000 the God of the Bible is not an either or God. 00:09:39.400 --> 00:09:41.379 He's a both and God. 00:09:42.080 --> 00:09:43.660 He's not a one-dimensional God. 00:09:43.659 --> 00:09:46.659 He's a multi-dimensional God. 00:09:46.919 --> 00:09:49.159 And the people of God are called to know 00:09:49.159 --> 00:09:53.899 this dynamic, personal, relational, incomparable being 00:09:53.899 --> 00:09:57.659 that cannot be reduced down to either this or that. 00:09:58.259 --> 00:09:59.000 And here's what I mean. 00:09:59.799 --> 00:10:01.939 Moses wants us to know this God 00:10:01.939 --> 00:10:05.539 is both imminent and transcendent. 00:10:05.959 --> 00:10:09.279 He's both near and he's awesome. 00:10:09.519 --> 00:10:11.059 Look at what he says in verse seven. 00:10:11.059 --> 00:10:13.500 He says, 00:10:14.319 --> 00:10:16.319 what other nation is so great 00:10:16.319 --> 00:10:18.679 as to have their gods near to them 00:10:18.679 --> 00:10:21.599 the way the Lord our God is near us? 00:10:22.179 --> 00:10:23.639 Whenever we pray to him, 00:10:23.679 --> 00:10:25.019 there's an intimate closeness. 00:10:25.239 --> 00:10:28.319 We call out and God's right there listening. 00:10:28.579 --> 00:10:30.399 He's near to us. 00:10:31.299 --> 00:10:32.879 And yet, listen to verse 33. 00:10:33.739 --> 00:10:34.199 Moses says, 00:10:34.200 --> 00:10:36.320 has any other people heard the voice of God 00:10:36.320 --> 00:10:40.020 out of fire as you have and lived? 00:10:40.080 --> 00:10:43.660 He balances God's nearness with the fact that 00:10:43.660 --> 00:10:47.800 he's so awesome and majestic in his power 00:10:47.800 --> 00:10:49.720 that if you were to plug into him, 00:10:50.240 --> 00:10:51.420 it would blow your circuits. 00:10:51.580 --> 00:10:54.020 I mean, Moses says in verse eight, 00:11:02.480 --> 00:11:02.840 he says, 00:11:03.259 --> 00:11:04.620 what other nation is so great 00:11:04.620 --> 00:11:07.860 as to have such righteous decrees and laws 00:11:07.860 --> 00:11:11.179 as this body of laws I'm setting before you today? 00:11:11.299 --> 00:11:12.759 Here is God right here 00:11:12.759 --> 00:11:16.919 giving you this ongoing quiet guidance 00:11:16.919 --> 00:11:19.220 through this righteous body of teaching 00:11:19.220 --> 00:11:22.139 the scriptures breathed out from his spirit 00:11:22.139 --> 00:11:23.740 into your spirit. 00:11:23.820 --> 00:11:25.220 He's right here with us. 00:11:25.220 --> 00:11:28.580 And yet, it's balanced with verse 34 00:11:28.580 --> 00:11:29.360 where he says, 00:11:29.560 --> 00:11:31.840 has any God ever tried to take for himself 00:11:31.840 --> 00:11:33.440 one nation out of another nation 00:11:33.440 --> 00:11:36.060 by testings, signs, and wonders, 00:11:36.300 --> 00:11:39.360 war, a mighty hand, and outstretched armor 00:11:39.360 --> 00:11:42.060 by great and awesome deeds 00:11:42.060 --> 00:11:43.480 like the things the Lord your God 00:11:43.480 --> 00:11:46.759 did for you in Egypt before your very eyes? 00:11:47.540 --> 00:11:49.899 The quiet guidance of God in the scriptures 00:11:49.899 --> 00:11:52.899 is balanced and matched by this drama 00:11:52.899 --> 00:11:56.299 of his mighty hand and his outstretched arm 00:11:56.299 --> 00:11:58.779 and these wonderful works of God 00:11:58.779 --> 00:12:00.360 to rescue his people. 00:12:00.579 --> Its brightness contrasted 00:13:21.819 --> 00:13:23.959 with all the surrounding darkness. 00:13:24.120 --> 00:13:26.679 And five times in this text, 00:13:27.219 --> 00:13:30.319 Moses likens God to a fire, right? 00:13:30.379 --> 00:13:33.479 Which is consistent with Genesis 15, 00:13:33.719 --> 00:13:35.559 God shows up to Abraham as a, 00:13:35.620 --> 00:13:37.779 he reveals himself as a blazing torch. 00:13:38.879 --> 00:13:41.719 Exodus three, God shows up to Moses in what? 00:13:41.939 --> 00:13:43.059 A burning bush. 00:13:43.059 --> 00:13:47.139 Exodus 13, God reveals himself to Israel 00:13:47.139 --> 00:13:51.459 and he leads them out of Egypt as a pillar of fire. 00:13:52.439 --> 00:13:53.839 Why fire? 00:13:53.959 --> 00:13:56.459 I don't know, but I just, I love, 00:13:56.819 --> 00:13:59.259 I love this fact because I've been a pyromaniac 00:13:59.259 --> 00:14:01.939 since I was a very young child. 00:14:02.099 --> 00:14:04.439 I just loved striking that match 00:14:04.439 --> 00:14:07.079 and seeing, you know, the flame come to life. 00:14:07.719 --> 00:14:10.000 Some of you have heard me talk about sewer ball. 00:14:10.000 --> 00:14:12.840 As an adolescent, we would take the manhole cover off. 00:14:13.539 --> 00:14:15.639 We'd pour some gasoline down the sewer. 00:14:16.259 --> 00:14:18.200 We'd soak a tennis ball in gasoline, 00:14:18.480 --> 00:14:19.059 light it on fire, 00:14:19.100 --> 00:14:20.460 and then we'd kind of play putt-putt 00:14:20.460 --> 00:14:23.480 and hope that we could get that flaming ball 00:14:23.480 --> and some dirt 00:14:51.779 --> 00:14:55.039 or do you give them wood and lighter fluid, right? 00:14:55.039 --> 00:15:01.559 The fire imagery, the fire likeness of God, 00:15:01.839 --> 00:15:03.219 it engages our senses. 00:15:03.519 --> 00:15:04.779 We can see the brightness. 00:15:05.059 --> 00:15:07.179 We can feel the heat. 00:15:07.279 --> 00:15:08.599 We can hear the roar. 00:15:09.399 --> 00:15:12.839 There's a formless, luminous, mysterious beauty 00:15:12.839 --> 00:15:15.799 that beckons us from a fire to come closer 00:15:15.799 --> 00:15:16.620 and to get warm. 00:15:16.740 --> 00:15:19.339 And yet, there's a powerful danger that says, 00:15:19.639 --> 00:15:21.699 don't come too close or you're gonna get burned. 00:15:21.700 --> 00:15:28.580 This fire on Mount Sinai needs Moses looks at the 00:30:53.779 --> 00:31:00.359 surrounding peoples, the surrounding cultures of the ancient world, and he says, they're going to be dazzled 00:31:00.359 --> 00:31:08.740 by what they see lived out among you, the people of God in your life together. The ideal nation in the 00:31:08.740 --> 00:31:16.139 ancient world was based on, you know, having great size and great wealth and great military power, and 00:31:16.139 --> 00:31:24.179 Israel had none of those things. Israel was small, it was weak, it was poor, it had no military. These were 00:31:24.179 --> 00:31:29.899 recently freed slaves who've been wandering in the wilderness, but God says to them through Moses, he says, 00:31:29.900 --> 00:31:38.680 your greatness is going to be your wisdom, that you live according to the wisdom of God woven into 00:31:38.680 --> 00:31:45.540 this world.
