00:00:59.219 --> 00:01:09.859 Again, Gideon is mostly a coward who needs constantly to be assured that he's okay, that God is going to be with him. 00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:15.759 And he keeps requesting for signs that God would assure him. 00:01:15.760 --> 00:01:22.520 And today we look at Jephthah in Judges chapter 11 and 12. 00:01:23.320 --> 00:01:25.719 Jephthah is a very interesting judge. 00:01:25.719 --> 00:01:32.179 There are two judges that I think are extremely interesting. 00:01:33.099 --> 00:01:34.840 Jephthah happens to be one of them. 00:01:35.939 --> 00:01:39.480 The life of Jephthah is in chapters 11 and 12. 00:01:40.159 --> 00:01:42.920 And it is looking at two incidents. 00:01:43.079 --> 00:01:46.200 But the two incidents are connected with each other. 00:01:46.319 --> 00:01:49.340 So they're not just two separate, unrelated incidents. 00:01:49.340 --> 00:01:53.040 There is an overarching theme which we will see. 00:01:53.579 --> 00:01:56.240 So let's begin first by looking at Jephthah. 00:01:56.640 --> 00:02:01.400 And let's turn in your Bibles, please, to the book of Judges chapter 11. 00:02:03.140 --> 00:02:10.680 If you look at your bulletin, you will also see that on the back I try to help you follow what I'm trying to say. 00:02:10.680 --> 00:02:17.760 So Jephthah, in verse 1, Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior. 00:02:18.719 --> 00:02:20.360 His father was Gilead. 00:02:20.860 --> 00:02:23.460 His mother was a prostitute. 00:02:25.560 --> 00:02:28.480 His mother was a prostitute. 00:02:29.920 --> 00:02:36.040 Gilead's wife, Gilead's legitimate wife, also bore him sons. 00:02:36.659 --> 00:02:39.819 And when they were grown up, they drove Jephthah away. 00:02:39.819 --> 00:02:47.079 You're not going to get any inheritance in our family, they said, because you are the son of another woman. 00:02:48.379 --> 00:02:52.359 So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tov, 00:02:53.379 --> 00:02:59.359 where a group of adventurers gathered around him and followed him. 00:03:01.280 --> 00:03:05.060 The problem with Jephthah is many. 00:03:05.879 --> 00:03:09.159 First of all, his mother is a prostitute. 00:03:09.159 --> 00:03:13.599 So he is clearly an outsider in Israel. 00:03:14.979 --> 00:03:22.280 He would never be treated with honor or dignity or respect or anything like that. 00:03:24.219 --> 00:03:26.460 Socially, he's an outcast. 00:03:26.460 --> 00:03:30.240 So he has no family. 00:03:30.240 --> 00:03:38.680 And his half-brothers, who have the same father but don't have the same mother, drove him away. 00:03:39.439 --> 00:03:42.879 You're not going to get any inheritance in our family. 00:03:42.879 --> 00:03:47.560 And so he left to the land of Tov. 00:03:48.340 --> 00:03:53.500 Jephthah has no family, no country, and no future. 00:03:54.859 --> 00:03:59.079 When we look at that incident, it echoes some things. 00:03:59.080 --> 00:04:11.980 When we think about brothers getting rid of their brother, perhaps you might recall Genesis and the story of Joseph. 00:04:11.979 --> 00:04:16.379 But in the case of Joseph, it's not because he was illegitimate. 00:04:16.879 --> 00:04:21.639 In the case of Joseph, it was because his brothers were jealous of him. 00:04:22.139 --> 00:04:25.860 They suspected he's going to be the leader in the family, and they didn't want him to be. 00:04:26.399 --> 00:04:27.539 And so they got rid of him. 00:04:27.540 --> 00:04:37.120 So Joseph is expelled by his family and sold as a slave to Egypt. 00:04:37.800 --> 00:04:45.100 And unless God had intervened, that would have been the end of Joseph, a slave unknown somewhere in Egypt with no record and nothing. 00:04:45.520 --> 00:04:46.600 But God intervened. 00:04:47.320 --> 00:04:52.700 So Joseph reminds us of that situation. 00:04:53.320 --> 00:04:55.080 But so does David. 00:04:57.540 --> 00:05:00.800 What we have in David is something similar to this. 00:05:01.800 --> 00:05:06.760 Saul is jealous of this young man who is becoming popular with the masses. 00:05:07.660 --> 00:05:15.379 And so David marries Saul's daughter. 00:05:15.379 --> 00:05:21.320 But as Saul's jealousy increases, David's life is in danger. 00:05:22.020 --> 00:05:23.520 He becomes a fugitive. 00:05:24.259 --> 00:05:27.439 And about 400 people join him in his fugitive. 00:05:27.540 --> 00:05:30.980 So this is starting to echo the life of David. 00:05:30.980 --> 00:05:38.000 But just as Joseph ended on a great note, and David ended on a great note, Jephthah does not. 00:05:38.819 --> 00:05:40.480 And we'll have to figure out why. 00:05:41.300 --> 00:05:47.700 When they seem to be on the same path, heading in the same direction, Jephthah is not. 00:05:47.699 --> 00:05:54.939 In any case, Jephthah is expelled from his country. 00:05:55.539 --> 00:05:58.620 And he is a vagabond. 00:05:58.860 --> 00:06:01.079 He is like Robin Hood in Sherwood Forest. 00:06:02.079 --> 00:06:05.819 And Israel is in danger. 00:06:05.819 --> 00:06:06.819 They want a leader. 00:06:06.819 --> 00:06:08.439 They want a leader to help them. 00:06:08.540 --> 00:06:15.000 So they come to him, not because they love him, not because they care about him, but because they need him as a warrior. 00:06:15.639 --> 00:06:17.099 And he doesn't trust them. 00:06:17.659 --> 00:06:19.899 And so he makes them take an oath. 00:06:20.759 --> 00:06:22.139 That is the first oath. 00:06:22.139 --> 00:06:25.659 That is a preview of other things to happen. 00:06:26.899 --> 00:06:32.919 And so, in any case, they said, you know, if you lead us, we'll make you the leader and the commander. 00:06:35.139 --> 00:06:41.060 And Jephthah doesn't believe them, doesn't trust them, but he decides to do it. 00:06:41.060 --> 00:06:48.180 Because Israel is at war, this brings us to the second issue. 00:06:48.660 --> 00:06:52.199 But before we go to the second that all of us went to good schools, got a good education, and were able to improve our state in life. 00:08:04.399 --> 00:08:17.239 For that reason, and because in education I was extremely competitive and could compete very hard and do very, very well in college and in school, 00:08:17.639 --> 00:08:24.379 I was sent to America to get a Western education, which is a lot better than Middle Eastern education, 00:08:24.379 --> 00:08:28.000 and hopefully that would open doors. 00:08:29.519 --> 00:08:34.000 My father wanted me to be a medical doctor. 00:08:35.379 --> 00:08:39.379 There are 14 cousins of us. 00:08:40.220 --> 00:08:41.879 Eight are medical doctors. 00:08:43.960 --> 00:08:49.399 And my father thought that I was the smartest of them all, but that's, of course,
