believes is the most important question we can ask. 00:00:19.980 --> 00:00:26.660 Because the answer to this question undergirds all other questions and answers. 00:00:26.800 --> 00:00:27.539 And that letters that the Apostle John wrote to the church. 00:01:10.280 --> 00:01:14.400 We've been looking at this since January, I think. 00:01:15.319 --> 00:01:21.140 And at the very end of this letter, which is where we've come to, now here in June, 00:01:21.140 --> 00:01:25.799 we come to the end of the letter and we see that John is actually asking the exact same question. 00:01:26.799 --> 00:01:27.920 That Hoffman asks. 00:01:29.219 --> 00:01:33.500 And what we realize is that this question about reality isn't just a science question. 00:01:34.500 --> 00:01:37.280 Actually, more fundamentally, it's a spiritual question. 00:01:37.280 --> 00:01:41.340 Do we see reality as it is? 00:01:41.340 --> 00:01:44.939 You know, what's interesting is that a lot of people who are not religious, 00:01:45.980 --> 00:01:49.680 they view religion, in particular a faith like Christianity, 00:01:49.859 --> 00:01:52.219 as being a way of escaping reality. 00:01:53.020 --> 00:01:57.659 But in fact, when you began to investigate the core claims of Christianity, 00:01:57.780 --> 00:02:01.280 what you see is that Christianity is very much concerned with 00:02:01.280 --> 00:02:05.040 our ability to perceive reality as it is. 00:02:05.040 --> 00:02:07.880 And in fact, it would say that one of our most fundamental problems 00:02:07.880 --> 00:02:11.040 is that we are on our own unable to do so. 00:02:13.439 --> 00:02:16.840 But John would say the very same thing, that our ability to survive, 00:02:18.099 --> 00:02:24.659 any chance we hope to have of flourishing is directly related to whether or not we perceive reality as it is. 00:02:25.319 --> 00:02:29.020 And so in chapter 5, verses 18 through 21, 00:02:30.360 --> 00:02:32.540 John is closing his letter out, --> 00:03:06.039 Each of these things anchors us in reality. 00:03:07.240 --> 00:03:09.580 The first anchor concerns our identity. 00:03:10.659 --> 00:03:13.439 The second anchor concerns our world. So what he's saying is the first anchor concerns our identity. 00:04:27.280 --> 00:04:28.259 And he says very simply, 00:04:29.319 --> 00:04:30.340 If you're a Christian, 00:04:31.199 --> 00:04:34.780 sneak across the border, 00:05:32.939 --> 00:05:33.819 and he would hide, 00:05:33.939 --> 00:05:35.220 and he would work odd jobs, 00:05:35.220 --> 00:05:36.940 and he would get paid next to nothing, 00:05:37.300 --> 00:05:38.260 and he would hide out, 00:05:38.300 --> 00:05:39.340 and he couldn't go out in public 00:05:39.340 --> 00:05:40.740 because he was afraid of getting caught, 00:05:41.060 --> 00:05:42.940 and he got caught multiple times, 00:05:43.260 --> 00:05:44.380 and every time he would get caught, 00:05:44.440 --> 00:05:45.760 he would get taken back to Mexico, 00:05:46.360 --> 00:05:47.700 and then as soon as he could, 00:05:47.760 --> 00:05:49.160 he would sneak back across the border. 00:05:49.340 --> 00:05:51.320 And this is how he lived his entire adult life. 00:05:59.840 and he went into an immigration office, 00:06:00.079 --> 00:06:01.259 an immigration lawyer, 00:06:01.420 --> 00:06:03.740 to ask what it would take for him to become a citizen. 00:06:04.939 --> 00:06:06.160 And they did a little research, 00:06:06.220 --> 00:06:07.300 and they actually found out 00:06:07.300 --> 00:06:09.280 that his father had been born in Texas, 00:06:10.379 --> 00:06:11.720 and that the entire time, 00:06:11.920 --> 00:06:13.160 he was a U.S. citizen, 00:06:13.439 --> 00:06:15.000 and they had the papers to prove it. 00:06:15.540 --> 00:06:17.420 But he had been living like an illegal immigrant. 00:06:19.120 --> 00:06:21.199 So there are many, many, many of us, 00:06:21.300 --> 00:06:22.540 many people who are Christians, 00:06:23.000 --> 00:06:24.580 who have that status, 00:06:25.199 --> 00:06:27.240 but who live like we're illegal immigrants. 00:06:27.300 --> 00:06:31.680 What makes you a Christian 00:06:31.680 --> 00:06:33.740 is not that you believe in God. 00:06:34.300 --> 00:06:35.639 Most people believe in God. 00:06:36.579 --> 00:06:37.680 You know, what makes you a Christian 00:06:37.680 --> 00:06:40.480 is not that you want to be a good person, 00:06:40.580 --> 00:06:41.280 and do good things. 00:06:41.420 --> 00:06:43.259 Most people want that. 00:06:43.480 --> 00:06:44.420 There are many people what John is saying 00:06:56.399 --> 00:06:58.379 is that Christians have absolute certainty. 00:06:59.500 --> 00:07:00.879 A Christian is, by definition, 00:07:01.039 --> 00:07:01.620 somebody who
