conscience be made clean? 00:05:06.019 --> 00:05:08.340 Well, that's what Hebrews 9, 1 through 14 answers. 00:05:09.860 --> 00:05:10.720 Here's the answer. 00:05:12.160 --> 00:05:15.819 Only the blood what can't clean your conscience? 00:05:59.339 --> 00:06:00.719 Let's look at verses 1 through 10. 00:06:00.720 --> 00:06:07.480 Now, remember that the original audience of the book of Hebrews, this letter came into a church. 00:06:07.940 --> 00:06:12.180 And they were Christians with a Jewish Hebrew background. 00:06:12.580 --> 00:06:13.980 They had been suffering for Christ. 00:06:14.080 --> 00:06:18.140 We're going to see that more as we get into the latter chapters of the book of Hebrews. 00:06:19.140 --> 00:06:22.640 And they were being tempted to go back to the old covenant of Judaism. 00:06:22.639 --> 00:06:26.300 With its earthly tabernacle. 00:06:26.719 --> 00:06:28.579 And its Levitical priesthood. 00:06:28.779 --> 00:06:30.879 And its animal sacrifices. 00:06:31.919 --> 00:06:38.019 The problem was that by going back to these old covenant arrangements, 00:06:38.479 --> 00:06:41.120 they would have to forsake Christ. 00:06:42.259 --> 00:06:44.800 And the new covenant he had established in his blood. 00:06:44.800 --> 00:06:52.780 Only the blood of Christ can cleanse a guilty conscience. 00:06:53.960 --> 00:06:55.939 Not the blood of bulls and goats. 00:06:57.379 --> 00:07:08.139 So, in verses 1 through 10, the writer of Hebrews shows us how the old covenant arrangements of the earthly tabernacle 00:07:08.139 --> 00:07:14.899 and the Levitical priesthood and animal sacrifices fall short of cleansing a guilty conscience. 00:07:15.079 --> 00:07:17.019 It's shown to be faulty. 00:07:18.699 --> 00:07:19.199 Incomplete. 00:07:20.300 --> 00:07:24.199 So, in verses 1 through 5, we see a description of the earthly tabernacle. 00:07:25.659 --> 00:07:29.120 Maybe you haven't heard of the earthly tabernacle before. 00:07:29.120 --> 00:07:35.100 It was a portable tent that God had the Jewish people design. 00:07:35.500 --> 00:07:37.639 And he would come and dwell in that tent. 00:07:37.920 --> 00:07:43.680 And he would kind of like go with his people in the wilderness and into the promised land. 00:07:43.959 --> 00:07:52.860 If you want to take a deeper look at the tabernacle, look at Exodus chapter 25, verses chapter 25 through chapter 31. 00:07:52.860 --> 00:07:58.879 In this passage, we learn that it's an earthly place of holiness. 00:08:01.319 --> 00:08:03.699 It's a real dwelling place of God. 00:08:04.819 --> 00:08:08.420 In 2 through 5, we learn that there's two sections of this tent. 00:08:10.800 --> 00:08:19.699 The first is this outer section, the holy place with a lampstand and a table and the bread of presents. 00:08:19.699 --> 00:08:24.319 And the second section is called the holy of holies. 00:08:24.439 --> 00:08:25.539 It's the inner section. 00:08:25.659 --> 00:08:29.420 You would have to go through the holy place to get into the holy of holies. 00:08:30.479 --> 00:08:34.600 And in the holy of holies was the Ark of the Covenant. 00:08:35.899 --> 00:08:43.580 And inside the Ark of the Covenant, you had an urn holding the manna, God's provision for his people in the wilderness. 00:08:43.580 --> 00:08:49.280 You had the staff of Aaron that budded, showing that he was a priest from God. 00:08:49.500 --> 00:08:54.820 And that you had the tablets of the Old Covenant, the Ten Commandments. 00:08:54.960 --> 00:09:01.320 And so the Ark was this kind of remembrance of the Old Covenant. 00:09:02.160 --> 00:09:04.940 And on it, the top of the Ark was the mercy seat. 00:09:04.940 --> 00:09:09.300 And it was believed, we see it throughout the Old Testament, God would dwell. 00:09:09.460 --> 00:09:16.560 He would come in his cloud of presence, the Shekinah glory, and come within the holy of holies to dwell with his people. 00:09:19.600 --> 00:09:20.720 It's quite a description. 00:09:21.940 --> 00:09:24.560 It was a real way in which God was dwelling with his people. 00:09:24.559 --> 00:09:34.439 But what the tabernacle, the earthly tabernacle, with these two sections make very clear is this. 00:09:35.439 --> 00:09:40.500 Even though God was with his people, he was separate from his people. 00:09:41.519 --> 00:09:42.799 Restricted access. 00:09:44.659 --> 00:09:48.059 So we move from the earthly temple. 00:09:48.319 --> 00:09:50.979 Now let's talk about the Levitical priests. 00:09:50.980 --> 00:09:54.899 In verses 6 and 7, we have this description of priestly duties. 00:09:55.700 --> 00:10:04.420 In verse 6, we have kind of the everyday priests who come in and out of that first section, the holy place. 00:10:05.379 --> 00:10:07.720 And what they were doing, and they're coming in and going out. 00:10:07.800 --> 00:10:10.259 They were tending to the oil in the lampstand. 00:10:10.399 --> 00:10:11.860 They were placing the bread of presence. 00:10:12.100 --> 00:10:15.279 They were making sure there was incense on the altar. 00:10:15.279 --> 00:10:22.220 But what you need to understand is, it was only Levitical priests who were entering the holy place. 00:10:22.519 --> 00:10:25.500 No other person from Israel could enter. 00:10:26.759 --> 00:10:27.519 Restricted access. 00:10:29.699 --> 00:10:31.159 And then we look at verse 7. 00:10:31.159 --> 00:10:35.939 And in verse 7, it even gets more restricted. 00:10:36.939 --> 00:10:47.179 Because the high priest, only the high priest, could enter the holy of holies only once a and more aged and decrepit. 00:12:09.180 --> 00:12:12.240 Kind of entering into the holy of holies. 00:12:12.580 --> 00:12:14.139 Bringing blood and then leaving. 00:12:14.560 --> 00:12:16.180 00:14:51.820 By this arrangement, the Holy Spirit indicates, 00:14:52.460 --> 00:14:54.220 the Holy Spirit speaking a word, 00:14:55.680 --> 00:14:58.420 that the way into the holy places is not yet opened, 00:14:58.620 --> 00:15:00.940 as long as the first section is still standing, 00:15:01.399 --> 00:15:03.920 which is symbolic for the present age. 00:15:04.060 --> 00:15:05.779 That word in verse 9, symbolic, 00:15:05.779 --> 00:15:07.339 we get the word parable from. 00:15:07.720 --> 00:15:11.600 And so the Holy Spirit is pointing to the old covenant arrangement 00:15:11.600 --> But what you need to understand is that 00:16:18.679 --> 00:16:23.159 though we're not tempted to go back to the old covenant, 00:16:23.319 --> 00:16:27.100 we are tempted to look to arrangements 00:16:27.100 --> 00:16:32.399 incapable of cleansing our consciences. 00:16:33.580 --> 00:16:37.680 We try to mediate our own atonements. 00:16:37.679 --> 00:16:43.519 When the check engine light of become aware of the guilt of your sin, 00:16:53.699 --> 00:16:55.799 you try to outgood your guilt. 00:16:55.799 --> 00:17:01.139 Your thinking is, I just need to do more good than wrong. 00:17:01.479 I know I'm pretty bad, 00:18:20.800 --> 00:18:21.660 but I'm not that bad. 00:18:26.200 --> 00:18:28.200 Here's another way that we try to minimize our guilt. 00:18:29.279 --> 00:18:30.380 We theologize it. 00:18:30.840 --> 00:18:31.960 We say things like this. 00:18:32.720 --> 00:18:36.200 God doesn't see that small stuff. 00:18:37.060 --> 00:18:40.259 Or we say, God doesn't care about 00:19:37.880 --> 00:19:39.600 that the primary way 00:19:39.600 --> 00:19:43.060 that people seek to deal with their own sin, 00:19:43.160 --> 00:19:44.799 they find an arrangement, 00:19:45.320 --> 00:19:48.640 is by numbing themselves to their guilt. 00:19:49.759 --> 00:19:52.279 You find ways to distract yourself, 00:19:53.060 --> 00:19:55.299 to numb yourself 00:19:55.299 --> 00:19:56.279 by being busy, 00:19:56.600 --> 00:19:57.759 by finding entertainment, 00:19:58.320 --> 00:20:01.420 by drinking yourself numb to your guilt, 00:20:01.420 --> 00:20:04.740 by smoking yourself numb to your guilt, 00:20:04.900 --> 00:20:08.120 by sexing yourself numb to your guilt. 00:20:08.600 --> 00:20:09.759 They're just different tactics 00:20:09.759 --> 00:20:12.019 to numb yourself to your
