The Americans only know how to make razor blades. 00:05:48.840 --> 00:05:53.080 They'd converted all their factories now to be geared up for war. 00:05:54.460 --> 00:05:56.840 And the field marshal 00:07:16.519 we see two very different reactions to this great victory that God gave through David. 00:07:17.779 --> 00:07:20.319 And isn't it true how the word of God is a mirror? 00:07:21.439 --> 00:07:25.959 We read the words of scripture, but God's word reads us in our soul. 00:07:27.300 --> 00:07:32.060 There are only two responses you and I can have to the victorious Messiah. 00:07:32.060 --> 00:07:36.579 Two responses to the victorious Messiah. 00:07:37.720 --> 00:07:39.759 The first is Saul's response. 00:07:40.540 --> 00:07:43.500 After the victory that God gave Jonathan, 00:07:44.680 --> 00:07:46.879 Saul built a monument to himself. 00:07:47.139 --> 00:07:49.040 Do you remember that a few chapters back? 00:07:50.279 --> 00:07:54.879 And then remember how after parading wicked King Agag around, 00:07:55.060 --> 00:07:57.759 even though God said, kill that king, kill everything, 00:07:57.759 --> 00:08:03.939 Saul pretended that he was praying to God and going through the motions of worship. 00:08:04.839 --> 00:08:07.939 And God said, I want obedience, not sacrifice. 00:08:09.300 --> 00:08:11.219 Well, what was Saul's reaction now? 00:08:11.319 --> 00:08:17.959 What will his response be after this great victory that God gave the nation of Israel through David, 00:08:18.420 --> 00:08:19.379 the anointed one? 00:08:19.480 --> 00:08:21.159 Remember, the word anointed means shepherd. 00:08:22.360 --> 00:08:25.819 Look at chapter 17, verse 57 one more time. 00:08:25.819 --> 00:08:30.860 Then as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistines, 00:08:31.360 --> 00:08:38.100 Abner took him and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand. 00:08:39.139 --> 00:08:40.480 The stage is set. 00:08:41.019 --> 00:08:42.720 This is your big moment, King Saul. 00:08:43.200 --> 00:08:45.759 How will you respond to what God has done? 00:08:47.639 --> 00:08:49.580 There he is, a shepherd boy. 00:08:49.580 --> 00:08:54.000 He had been offered the clothes of King Saul, remember? 00:08:54.379 --> 00:08:59.080 But God did this great victory without him wearing the armor that King Saul offered him. 00:09:00.160 --> 00:09:06.580 This victory was given to a peasant looking young man, maybe 15 year old boy, you could say, 00:09:07.240 --> 00:09:09.360 without any help from Saul. 00:09:10.400 --> 00:09:12.200 This is incredibly humbling. 00:09:12.200 --> 00:09:17.280 So it requires an appropriate response now from Saul. 00:09:18.020 --> 00:09:22.920 God loves to humble the man who views himself as most powerful, doesn't he? 00:09:23.680 --> 00:09:28.879 Later on in redemptive history, remember the great King Nebuchadnezzar, ruler of the entire world. 00:09:29.440 --> 00:09:30.700 Oh, the Lord humbled him. 00:09:32.160 --> 00:09:33.640 What will Saul's response be? 00:09:34.240 --> 00:09:36.879 Nebuchadnezzar responded this way in Daniel 434. 00:09:36.879 --> 00:09:39.519 Blessed be the Most High. 00:09:39.939 --> 00:09:42.639 Praise and honor be unto him who lives forever. 00:09:43.039 --> 00:09:45.759 For his dominion is an everlasting dominion. 00:09:46.059 --> 00:09:49.360 And his kingdom is from generation to generation. 00:09:49.820 --> 00:09:53.039 All the inhabitants of the earth are as nothing. 00:09:53.439 --> 00:09:58.899 He does according to his will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of earth. 00:09:59.259 --> 00:10:02.600 No one can restrain his mighty hand. 00:10:02.600 --> 00:10:08.899 That's what the uncircumcised pagan King Nebuchadnezzar declared of God. 00:10:09.360 --> 00:10:11.259 That's an appropriate response. 00:10:14.080 --> 00:10:20.600 What will Saul say in response to what God has accomplished before all Israel and all Philistia? 00:10:20.600 --> 00:10:27.659 In verse 58, Saul said to him, David, whose son are you? 00:10:28.000 --> 00:10:31.399 Some of your English translations get it literally, boy. 00:10:35.139 --> 00:10:36.879 No prayer lifted up. 00:10:37.340 --> 00:10:39.920 No doxology for the whole nation to hear. 00:10:41.080 --> 00:10:47.820 No Ebenezer or a memorial of God's faithfulness like Samuel built up after another great defeat. 00:10:47.820 --> 00:10:50.120 God gave them over the same people, the Philistines. 00:10:51.440 --> 00:10:55.720 No honor even given to the faithful servant that God equipped to win. 00:10:58.220 --> 00:11:00.900 See, David was God's anointed shepherd. 00:11:01.240 --> 00:11:03.100 David was a Messiah figure. 00:11:04.520 --> 00:11:09.960 And he had just crushed the head of this scale-covered accuser, Goliath. 00:11:09.960 --> 00:11:16.660 This was a victory that was remarkably symbolic. 00:11:19.240 --> 00:11:27.960 And unfortunately, this story ends with a remarkably anticlimactic response from the King of Israel. 00:11:27.960 --> 00:11:33.639 Well, next, this passage sets up two bookends. 00:11:34.420 --> 00:11:36.000 This is called an inclusio. 00:11:36.480 --> 00:11:38.660 And then it works its way to the center. 00:11:39.400 --> 00:11:42.400 And it points out what we're supposed to focus on. 00:11:43.600 --> 00:11:45.420 I'd love to do structure of this Hebrew narrative, the way God breathed it out, 00:14:03.060 --> 00:14:10.300 it acts as walls closing in, squeezing, suffocating this panicked man, Saul, 00:14:10.940 --> 00:14:12.660 who's enslaved to his idol. 00:14:14.019 --> 00:14:15.759 His idol is his throne. 00:14:15.759 --> 00:14:21.740 After God delivered the kingdom from death and slavery to the Philistines, 00:14:21.939 --> 00:14:25.059 Saul's eyes don't go up to heaven in praise. 00:14:25.659 --> 00:14:26.720 They are low. 00:14:27.299 --> 00:14:28.519 He eyed David. 00:14:29.220 --> 00:14:31.840 He's gazing down from his tall height, 00:14:32.120 --> 00:14:34.279 head and shoulders above every other man in the nation, 00:14:34.779 --> 00:14:37.259 looking down at this boy. 00:14:38.399 --> 00:14:40.819 A threat to his idol, his throne. 00:14:42.179 --> 00:14:44.139 A simple shepherd dressed like a peasant. 00:14:44.139 --> 00:14:48.299 A simple shepherd threatens the most powerful man in Israel. 00:14:49.980 --> 00:14:52.159 It's a very sad picture we have. 00:14:53.159 --> 00:14:56.220 He's surrounded by all of God's people, the whole nation. 00:14:56.980 --> 00:15:00.980 He's in the midst of joyful singing, dancing, celebrating. 00:15:01.960 --> 00:15:06.840 They've gotten a wonderful display of God's mighty power over the world. 00:15:07.460 --> 00:15:10.679 And there is Saul all alone. 00:15:12.419 --> 00:15:13.939 God's people are joyful. 00:15:14.139 --> 00:15:15.179 But not Saul. 00:15:16.220 --> 00:15:18.799 God's people are singing all around him. 00:15:19.159 --> 00:15:20.000 But not Saul. 00:15:21.199 --> 00:15:26.580 God's people know the Lord of hosts is with him, with them. 00:15:26.819 --> 00:15:28.340 And they trust him by faith. 00:15:28.759 --> 00:18:51.279 Remember many chapters ago. 00:18:51.279 --> 00:18:54.779 Jonathan already stormed the garrison of the Philistines with his armor bearer. 00:18:54.819 --> 00:18:56.119 And the Lord gave a
