make us wise. 00:00:58.000 --> 00:01:03.259 That's what He wants to do as we do our study in this book. 00:01:04.260 --> 00:01:14.420 But if we reject the Lord's wisdom, that's the same thing as Commentary on Proverbs, pointed out about biblical wisdom. 00:02:49.179 --> 00:02:52.439 Three characteristics that will be on the screen. 00:02:53.000 --> 00:02:55.179 Number one, biblical wisdom is practical. 00:02:55.180 --> 00:03:04.719 He's talking about, as he introduced the topic of wisdom, in chapter 1, specifically verses 3 through 7, 00:03:05.500 --> 00:03:08.060 biblical wisdom is practical. 00:03:09.080 --> 00:03:11.260 It includes the idea of common sense. 00:03:11.680 --> 00:03:18.659 Someone who is wise, as Proverbs teaches us to be wise, will be someone who demonstrates good common sense. 00:03:19.280 --> 00:03:23.000 The ability also to cope with daily problems. 00:03:23.000 --> 00:03:25.620 And that's what Proverbs is filled with. 00:03:26.400 --> 00:03:30.199 example, 00:04:32.580 --> 00:04:38.100 gives us a good example that God expects us to observe, to learn, to study. 00:04:38.100 --> 00:04:40.600 Look in 1 Kings chapter 4. 00:04:42.060 --> 00:04:45.960 It says, he described plant life, talking about Solomon now, 00:04:46.960 --> 00:04:50.300 from the cedar of Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of walls. 00:04:50.780 --> 00:04:54.240 He also taught about animals and birds, reptiles and fish. 00:04:54.820 --> 00:04:57.980 Men of all nations came to listen to Solomon's wisdom, 00:04:58.560 --> 00:05:02.120 sent by all the kings of the world who had heard of his wisdom. 00:05:02.120 --> 00:05:06.720 Solomon was a man who was given wisdom by God, as we'll see in a moment. 00:05:08.560 --> 00:05:10.720 But Solomon had a keen mind. 00:05:11.480 --> 00:05:14.639 He was just interested in life, how life worked. 00:05:15.360 --> 00:05:18.240 And he studied, he observed, and he wrote about it. 00:05:19.100 --> 00:05:21.180 Biblical wisdom is practical. 00:05:21.699 --> 00:05:22.699 It's intellectual. 00:05:23.939 --> 00:05:25.840 Biblical wisdom is also moral. 00:05:25.839 --> 00:05:29.060 And it involves self-control. 00:05:29.939 --> 00:05:33.560 Back in chapter 1, this is a summary of chapter 1, sort of. 00:05:34.539 --> 00:05:44.239 This is indicated by words like righteousness, doing what's right, justice, equity, or fairness. 00:05:45.839 --> 00:05:50.239 A person who is wise, as God teaches us about wisdom here, 00:05:50.240 --> 00:05:56.360 is someone who seeks to put into practice what they learn from God's Word. 00:05:57.259 --> 00:06:00.579 Someone who seeks to do what's right because it is right, 00:06:00.660 --> 00:06:02.800 and because that's what pleases God. 00:06:04.060 --> 00:06:09.780 We can summarize how wisdom is described in the beginning of Proverbs chapter 1 like this. 00:06:10.360 --> 00:06:14.960 A wise person has correct knowledge, that's intellectual wisdom, 00:06:42.259 and seeks to honor God in the way they use it. 00:06:42.939 --> 00:06:44.539 Honor God in all things. 00:06:45.719 --> 00:06:49.459 A wise person also, and we're going to see this throughout, 00:06:49.459 --> 00:06:51.939 we're going to see it some in chapter 2 later on, 00:06:51.939 --> 00:06:58.139 a wise person also recognizes that he or she will always be surrounded by people 00:06:58.139 --> 00:07:00.959 who reject this wisdom, 00:07:01.959 --> 00:07:04.599 who do not care about God, 00:07:05.139 --> 00:07:08.419 who actually reject God and His truth. 00:07:09.240 --> 00:07:13.000 And such people, they're not just in our lives, 00:07:13.079 --> 00:07:14.779 they're trying to influence our lives. 00:07:14.779 --> 00:07:20.679 They're tempting us to look at life longest chapter in the Bible, 00:10:53.199 --> 00:10:57.019 and the whole point of that long psalm 00:10:57.019 --> 00:11:01.439 is to help us understand the importance of, 00:11:01.759 --> 00:11:04.059 the value of God's Word, 00:11:05.159 --> 00:11:06.240 and studying it, 00:11:06.939 --> 00:11:08.399 seeking to understand it, 00:11:08.839 --> 00:11:11.199 so that we can live the way that God tells us to live. 00:11:12.039 --> 00:11:14.939 Now, this idea of seeking to acquire wisdom 00:11:14.940 --> 00:11:16.020 by being teachable, 00:11:16.760 --> 00:11:18.620 by listening to
