00:06:12.079 --> 00:06:16.180 To the point that your neighbors wonder, what's the deal with you? 00:06:17.660 --> 00:06:23.480 The people that you work with are attracted to the fact that in this doom and gloom world, 00:06:23.980 --> 00:06:28.439 there's a spirit in you that's unusual. 00:06:28.439 --> 00:06:31.079 And they desire to know more about it. 00:06:32.719 --> 00:06:38.079 Well, I want you to look at the passage this morning and recognize there in the Matthew passage, 00:06:38.199 --> 00:06:43.019 what we're looking at is Jesus in this setting with his disciples, 00:06:43.360 --> 00:06:46.740 and they are gathering ostensibly to celebrate the Passover. 00:06:46.920 --> 00:06:50.819 It was something that every Jew did, at least should have done. 00:06:50.819 --> 00:06:58.800 And it was a reminder to the nation of Israel that God had taken them out of the land of slavery 00:06:58.800 --> 00:07:03.939 when they had been under the boot of Egypt and had been suffering in that environment. 00:07:04.339 --> 00:07:05.659 God took them out. 00:07:08.259 --> 00:07:12.620 And he did so by instructing Moses to speak to the people. 00:07:13.240 --> 00:07:16.319 And you'll remember what they did was they slaughtered a lamb, 00:07:16.319 --> 00:07:20.319 and they put the blood on the lentils and on both doorposts, 00:07:21.279 --> 00:07:29.319 and they stayed inside the night that God sent death through the entire nation of Egypt. 00:07:29.879 --> 00:07:38.560 And every firstborn died where there was not the blood on the lentil and the doorposts. 00:07:38.560 --> 00:07:46.600 And so every year the Egyptians or the Israelites were instructed that they were to celebrate the Passover, 00:07:46.600 --> 00:07:51.280 and they were to remind themselves that it had been through the sacrifice of the lamb, 00:07:51.459 --> 00:07:56.579 and it had been through the work of God that they had been redeemed from the iron furnace 00:07:56.579 --> 00:07:58.259 and from the suffering that they had endured. 00:07:58.259 --> 00:08:05.339 And so here, in the shadow of the cross, Jesus had said to his disciples, 00:08:05.819 --> 00:08:10.519 I want you to go and have a room prepared for me where we are going to eat together. 00:08:12.079 --> 00:08:15.360 It must have been with mixed emotion that they went about this, 00:08:15.439 --> 00:08:22.319 because just days earlier, remember they had had that phenomenal entrance into Jerusalem, 00:08:22.459 --> 00:08:24.000 and how had the people received them? 00:08:24.000 --> 00:08:27.800 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. 00:08:28.279 --> 00:08:29.839 Hosanna! Hosanna! 00:08:30.139 --> 00:08:35.120 And the enthusiasm of the crowd must have been infectious for the disciples. 00:08:36.980 --> 00:08:39.679 Now, things had turned a little south, though, 00:08:40.659 --> 00:08:45.600 because we know that they had a sense of foreboding as they gathered in this room, 00:08:45.659 --> 00:08:49.480 and Jesus spoke undeniably and very clearly about his death. 00:08:50.940 --> 00:08:51.820 They understood. 00:08:54.000 --> 00:08:57.740 They understood that something ominous was going to take place, 00:08:58.519 --> 00:09:03.360 and yet in the midst of the meal that they were partaking here, 00:09:04.059 --> 00:09:07.320 we find that Jesus does something quite unexpected. 00:09:07.519 --> 00:09:08.860 Look there in verse 26. 00:09:09.879 --> 00:09:13.220 Now, as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it, 00:09:13.320 --> 00:09:16.059 broke it and gave it to the disciples. 00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:18.720 He said, 00:09:18.720 00:09:29.259 --> 00:09:32.780 We often consider the meaning of these two statements 00:09:32.780 --> 00:09:39.740 and allow them to remind us of the fact that the bread and the cup really bring our focus 00:09:39.740 --> 00:09:43.040 and remind us of the fact that Jesus paid for our sins. 00:09:43.220 --> 00:09:46.680 That is what these things point our thoughts to, 00:09:47.180 --> 00:09:49.320 that he died in our place, 00:09:50.280 --> 00:09:51.460 that he took our wrath. 00:09:51.460 --> 00:09:55.600 I want us to look at a smaller piece of the passage this morning, 00:09:55.680 --> 00:09:59.280 and I want us to really focus in on that one little statement 00:09:59.280 --> 00:10:03.740 that over the years has just gripped my heart over and over again, 00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:07.120 and it is that little statement where he says that he gave thanks. 00:10:08.620 --> 00:10:09.700 He gave thanks. 00:10:09.700 --> 00:10:16.440 I have to tell you that learning how to be a thankful person is work. 00:10:19.980 --> 00:10:29.560 I can remember coaching my grandchildren in particular that thanks was something that was expected. 00:10:29.560 --> 00:10:35.520 There were please and thank you that went on either side of whatever their ambition or interest was. 00:10:35.519 --> 00:10:38.240 How many of you tried to work through that with your children or grandchildren? 00:10:39.639 --> 00:10:43.019 And there are various things that you do to kind of drive that point home. 00:10:43.480 --> 00:10:44.980 One is when they come out and say, 00:10:45.079 --> 00:10:46.139 Hey, I'd like such and such. 00:10:46.199 --> 00:10:46.819 What do you do? 00:10:48.240 --> 00:10:49.460 Not on your life. 00:10:50.460 --> 00:10:52.519 Well, you didn't say the magic. 00:10:52.659 --> 00:10:55.100 You know, they're the things we kind of get into to help them learn. 00:10:55.100 --> 00:11:00.220 And slowly, eventually, they kind of get it woven into their mind that they have to say please, 00:11:00.340 --> 00:11:01.440 and they have to say thank you. 00:11:03.259 --> 00:11:11.040 Now, we need to recognize that Jesus actually said thanks before both the bread and the cup. 00:11:11.340 --> 00:11:14.580 And if you take the companion passages, you will see that in one, 00:11:14.899 --> 00:11:17.080 it speaks of him saying thank you for the bread, 00:11:17.220 --> 00:11:19.160 and the other, it says thank you for the cup. 00:11:19.200 --> 00:11:21.340 And I think we can weave the two together and understand 00:11:21.340 --> 00:11:25.220 that before each of the things that he did, he was saying thank you. 00:11:26.899 --> 00:11:32.280 It was appropriate and part of Jewish custom that there was a prayer of blessing or thanks 00:11:32.280 --> 00:11:33.259 that preceded the meal. 00:11:34.879 --> 00:11:40.740 Yet given the moment, we can assume that Jesus did something 00:11:40.740 --> 00:11:44.360 that was not merely an expression of Jewish habit. that his father was going to forsake him. 00:12:23.540 --> 00:12:29.180 He also understood the weight of sin that was going to rest on his shoulders, 00:12:29.500 --> 00:12:33.040 and he would bear sinned with our tongue. 00:13:04.799 --> 00:13:05.519 That's nothing. 00:13:06.799 --> 00:13:09.599 Compared to what Jesus was going to endure 00:13:09.599 --> 00:13:14.479 as he took the full measure 00:18:47.940 --> 00:18:49.000 is granted constitutionally, 00:18:50.200 --> 00:18:50.839 and he's allowed, 00:18:51.059 --> 00:18:52.099 it actually goes back 00:18:52.099 --> 00:18:53.099 to kings in England 00:18:53.099 --> 00:18:54.460 who at the end of the day 00:18:54.460 --> 00:18:55.259 were the law. 00:18:57.099 --> 00:18:58.539 And the king could pardon. 00:19:02.079 --> 00:19:02.480
