00:01:54.500 on a more serious note every single one of us faces temptation every single day don't we 00:01:54.500 --> 00:02:01.019 it could be that we're tempted during this time of uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus 00:02:01.019 --> 00:02:08.079 to get caught up in the the gossip and the bad news and to spiral into a pit of despair 00:02:08.080 --> 00:02:15.240 instead of focusing on our great God who is unchanging who is faithful and who is loving 00:02:15.240 --> 00:02:22.420 or maybe we're tempted to ignore everything the government and medical experts are telling us 00:02:22.420 --> 00:02:28.700 and instead we start speaking badly and thinking badly of those God has put over us 00:02:28.700 --> 00:02:37.060 at our own risk and to the risk of others or maybe it's once you've reached day three of your isolation 00:02:37.060 --> 00:02:43.000 you might be tempted to lose your temper your fuse gets just that little bit shorter 00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:50.400 you lash out at the children because they aren't listening or if you're a child maybe you're tempted 00:02:50.400 --> 00:02:58.620 to annoy your parents a little bit more just for some fun we are surrounded by temptation day to day 00:02:58.620 --> 00:03:05.340 and it isn't always the most obvious things in the world either it could be that hidden sin that no one 00:03:05.340 --> 00:03:12.039 knows about but that eats you up from the inside out every single time and you just can't stop 00:03:12.039 --> 00:03:20.319 temptation is all around and we fight it every single day and the passage we're going to look at this 00:03:20.319 --> 00:03:26.699 morning is all about temptation but it's not about our temptation it's about the temptation of our Lord 00:03:26.699 --> 00:03:35.399 Jesus Christ and the reality is that the opposite of temptation for the Christian is obedience to God 00:03:35.399 --> 00:03:41.439 so if you're obeying God in a specific with a specific thing or in a specific area 00:03:41.439 --> 00:03:49.919 you can't then be tempted at the same time with that thing obedience is key to temptation 00:03:49.919 --> 00:03:56.079 temptation this morning we will see how Jesus too faced the most severe temptations 00:03:56.079 --> 00:04:05.399 but most importantly we will see how Jesus stood firm in his perfect obedience to the will of his father 00:04:05.399 --> 00:04:10.639 temptation is all around us and we so easily succumb to it 00:04:10.639 --> 00:04:17.500 this is part of our fallen nature part of the sin that has dwelt in the hearts of mankind since 00:04:17.500 --> 00:04:23.620 Genesis 3 but this morning we're going to see why it is so important that Jesus was tempted 00:04:23.620 --> 00:04:31.579 how his temptation can help us and most importantly why it is so important that though he was tempted 00:04:31.579 --> 00:04:38.339 he remained sinless so turn with me if you will to Luke chapter 4 and we'll start reading 00:04:38.339 --> 00:04:45.839 at verse 1 through to verse 13 Luke chapter 4 verse 1 says this 00:04:45.839 --> 00:04:52.939 Jesus full of the Holy Spirit left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness 00:04:52.939 --> 00:05:01.019 where for 40 days he was tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days and at the end 00:05:01.019 --> 00:05:06.339 of them he was hungry the devil said to him if you were the son of God 00:05:06.339 --> 00:05:08.879 tell this stone to become bread 00:05:08.879 --> 00:05:15.219 Jesus answered it is written man shall not live on bread alone 00:05:15.219 --> 00:05:22.139 the devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world 00:05:22.139 --> 00:05:28.019 and he said to him I will give you all their authority and splendor it has been given to me 00:05:28.019 --> 00:05:35.419 and I can give it to anyone I want to if you worship me it will all be yours 00:05:35.420 --> 00:05:41.720 Jesus answered it is written things that we need to be sure of as we come to a passage like this 00:06:30.800 --> 00:06:35.540 we need to see that this temptation is ordained by God 00:06:35.540 --> 00:06:38.980 but it is not God who tempts Jesus 00:06:38.980 --> 00:06:41.879 so look with me at verse 1 00:06:41.879 --> 00:06:49.420 it says Jesus full of the Holy Spirit left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness 00:06:49.420 --> 00:06:54.699 Satan is the one trying to entice Jesus to sin 00:06:54.699 --> 00:07:00.659 Satan is the voice trying to sow doubt and disobedience in Jesus' mind 00:07:00.659 --> 00:07:07.740 God is not doing the tempting but God has taken Jesus to the place where he will be tempted 00:07:07.740 --> 00:07:13.079 remember how in the book of Genesis that we've been studying together 00:07:13.079 --> 00:07:18.060 we were thinking about how Adam was tempted and yet he failed 00:07:18.060 --> 00:07:23.980 well Jesus in the New Testament is described as the second Adam 00:07:23.980 --> 00:07:30.540 therefore the temptation of Jesus is important because all of it is God's will 00:07:30.540 --> 00:07:34.120 God's will was for Jesus to be tempted 00:07:34.120 --> 00:07:36.800 but not be overcome by it 00:07:37.800 --> 00:07:41.980 he is the second Adam who came to save us from the sin 00:07:41.980 --> 00:07:45.340 which originated with Adam and Eve in Genesis chapter 3 00:07:45.339 --> 00:07:53.539 and the second thing that we need to remember is that Jesus is both fully God and fully man 00:07:53.539 --> 00:08:00.019 this passage is not here so that we can know how to face our temptations today 00:08:00.019 --> 00:08:06.159 but this passage is here to show us the perfect obedience of the Son of God 00:08:06.159 --> 00:08:10.439 in this passage Jesus God in the flesh is tempted 00:08:10.439 --> 00:08:12.879 and his allegiance to God the Father 00:08:12.879 --> 00:08:16.939 and his obedience to the will of the Father is put to the test 00:08:16.939 --> 00:08:20.019 but he did what we never could 00:08:20.019 --> 00:08:22.720 he remained obedient 00:08:22.720 --> 00:08:25.839 this is an important message 00:08:25.839 --> 00:08:29.860 because if Jesus did not stand firm 00:08:29.860 --> 00:08:32.779 in his obedience to the will of the Father 00:08:32.779 --> 00:08:34.620 then forgiveness through the death of Jesus temptation that we see is in verse 3 00:09:02.759 --> 00:09:06.200 Jesus has just been baptized in the river Jordan 00:09:06.200 --> 00:09:08.399 in that wonderful scene 00:09:08.399 --> 00:09:11.379 where he identifies with mankind 00:09:11.379 --> 00:09:15.980 and God identifies Jesus as his Son 00:09:15.980 --> 00:09:18.439 so if you look over the page with me 00:09:18.439 --> 00:09:20.519 to Luke chapter 3 verse 22 00:09:20.519 --> 00:09:23.439 God speaks and says about Jesus 00:09:23.439 --> 00:09:24.600 you are my Son 00:09:24.600 --> 00:09:26.740 with whom I love 00:09:26.740 --> 00:09:29.080 with you I am well pleased 00:09:29.080 --> 00:09:31.860 and it's from there 00:09:31.860 --> 00:09:34.940 that Jesus was led by the Spirit of God 00:09:34.940 --> 00:09:35.700 into the 3 00:10:48.019 --> 00:10:50.539 Satan says 00:10:50.539 --> 00:10:51.879 if you are the Son of God 00:10:51.879 --> 00:10:54.519 but a more accurate translation 00:10:54.519 --> 00:10:55.779 of the word if 00:10:55.779 --> 00:10:57.580 would actually be since 00:10:57.580 --> 00:10:59.600 and so the verse reads 00:10:59.600 --> 00:11:01.299 since you are the Son of God 00:11:01.299 --> 00:11:03.519 Satan is saying 00:11:03.519 --> 00:11:05.480 Jesus you are the Son of God 00:11:05.480 --> 00:11:07.120 you have rights 00:11:07.120 --> 00:11:08.820 you don't need to go hungry
