writing this letter in the middle of the first century in the Roman Empire, 00:03:45.500 --> 00:03:53.039 a time and a place that was, if you can believe it, way more topsy-turvy than the time that we're living in. 00:03:53.259 --> 00:04:00.419 And here's this Christian, this leader in the church, who's giving us incredible wisdom 00:04:00.419 --> 00:04:03.960 about how to live in precarious and unpredictable times. 00:04:03.960 --> 00:04:13.580 And so, as usual, what Peter does is he draws our attention to this word that he uses in verse 6. 00:04:14.060 --> 00:04:15.200 It's the word, the gospel. 00:04:16.480 --> 00:04:19.660 That's the focus of this entire letter. 00:04:19.800 --> 00:04:26.379 It's the gospel, the good news of what God the Father has done through his Son and by his 00:05:14.819 Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, 00:05:15.079 --> 00:05:18.059 because those who have suffered in their bodies are done with sin. 00:05:18.719 --> 00:05:23.339 As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, 00:05:23.839 --> 00:05:26.099 but rather for the will of God. 00:05:26.100 --> 00:05:31.879 You see, the apostle Peter, he's writing to a group of people like the one that's gathered here today. 00:05:32.439 --> 00:05:36.520 And he's engaging them with this question that you heard in verse 2. 00:05:36.620 --> 00:05:37.020 It's in there. 00:05:37.100 --> 00:05:37.400 It says, 00:05:37.820 --> 00:05:41.040 How are you going to live the rest of your earthly lives? 00:05:42.340 --> 00:05:46.160 Whether you're 9 years old or 90 years old here today, 00:05:46.160 --> 00:05:51.920 all of us have a limited number of days with breath in our lungs and life in our bodies. 00:05:53.060 --> 00:05:58.620 And, you know, none of us knows how much time we have left to live our earthly lives. 00:05:58.640 --> 00:06:04.400 And I've been thinking about that quite a lot this week because my mom passed away on August 2nd. 00:06:04.960 --> 00:06:07.860 That's the anniversary of her death. 00:06:07.900 --> 00:06:09.280 And she was 50 years old. 00:06:09.279 --> 00:06:12.019 And I'm turning 46 this month. 00:06:12.659 --> 00:06:16.779 And as I think about that, you know, how much longer do I have to live? 00:06:16.899 --> 00:06:18.239 I have no clue. 00:06:18.599 --> 00:06:19.399 And neither do you. 00:06:19.879 --> 00:06:24.039 I mean, maybe I've got four years, four months, four weeks. 00:06:24.119 --> 00:06:24.479 Who knows? 00:06:24.559 --> 00:06:28.379 Maybe I've got 10, 20, 30, 40 more years to go. 00:06:29.419 --> 00:06:32.879 But how many of us know how much longer we have to live our earthly lives? 00:06:32.899 --> 00:06:33.599 Anybody know that? 00:06:33.600 --> 00:06:41.060 And so Peter's asking us this question, how are you going to live the rest of your earthly lives? 00:06:42.000 --> 00:06:48.760 And what he does is he says underneath all the apparently endless options of how we could live, 00:06:48.820 --> 00:06:51.540 he says there's really only two ways to live. 00:06:52.320 --> 00:06:54.080 And did you see that contrast in verse 2? 00:06:54.160 --> 00:06:59.060 He says on the one hand you have sinful human desires. 00:06:59.840 --> 00:07:02.680 And on the other hand you have the will of God. 00:07:03.600 --> 00:07:05.920 He makes the same contrast in verse 6. 00:07:06.020 --> 00:07:11.700 He says you've got life according to human standards and you've got life according to God. 00:07:13.120 --> 00:07:19.400 And what's the difference between these two life systems, these two operating systems? 00:07:20.200 --> 00:07:24.900 What's the difference between their structures of motivation and volition? 00:07:25.000 --> 00:07:26.960 Well, I want us to take a closer look. 00:07:26.959 --> 00:07:34.739 This word in verse 2 that Peter uses when he talks about desire, it's this great word called epithumia. 00:07:35.519 --> 00:07:39.339 Epithumia is not just desire, epithumia is over desire. 00:07:40.639 --> 00:07:51.459 Epithumia is inordinate desire, disordered desire, desires that are misaligned with the will and the desire of God. 00:07:51.459 --> 00:07:57.560 And Peter gives us some examples of epithumia, of over desire in verse 3. 00:07:57.659 --> 00:07:58.439 Look at it with me. 00:07:58.539 --> 00:07:58.719 He says, 00:07:58.779 --> 00:08:11.019 For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do, living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, and detestable idolatry. 00:08:11.019 --> 00:08:19.339 And for Peter, this is a list that basically sums up the dominant paradigm of the prevailing culture. 00:08:20.180 --> 00:08:25.339 This is how the majority of Greco-Roman, Gentile, pagan culture was living. 00:08:25.459 --> 00:08:29.759 This is the way of life that was accepted and normal and expected. 00:08:30.000 --> 00:08:33.079 And notice how Peter begins and ends his list. 00:08:33.159 --> 00:08:35.220 What's the first word and the last word he uses? 00:08:35.220 --> 00:08:41.700 The first word he uses is this word debauchery or in classical Greek it's often translated brutality. 00:08:43.019 --> 00:08:43.700 Brutality. 00:08:44.500 --> 00:08:47.639 To be brutal is to be harsh. 00:08:48.300 --> 00:08:49.460 It's to be cruel. 00:08:49.600 --> 00:08:51.320 It's to be heartless. 00:08:52.840 --> 00:08:54.840 It's like it's Twitter, right? 00:08:54.840 --> 00:09:07.560 Brutality is when you cast off restraint and self-control and you give full license to unbridled, shameless self-interest. 00:09:07.980 --> 00:09:13.060 Anybody ever done that in the past 24 hours at home with your family? 00:09:15.120 --> 00:09:23.759 Brutality is when you treat people as an object to be used rather than as a creature made in the image of God to be cared for. 00:09:24.840 --> 00:09:31.940 Brutality is when you relate to other people in a way that debases and dehumanizes them. 00:09:33.180 --> 00:09:42.220 Does that connect a little bit with how the dominant operating system of the culture that Peter's talking about? 00:09:43.240 --> 00:09:48.200 And then notice the final word, the climactic word in this series that he gives us. 00:09:48.200 --> 00:09:53.720 He says the cause of all of our human vices is idolatry. 00:09:53.720 --> 00:10:00.300 And idolatry is when you turn a good thing into an ultimate thing. 00:10:01.300 --> 00:10:07.940 Idolatry is when you take a created thing and you elevate it and you put it at the center where only God deserves to be. 00:10:08.080 --> 00:10:12.940 And what Peter's doing is he's looking out about him at Greco-Roman culture 00:10:12.940 --> 00:10:18.200 and the way that people have elevated the money god Mammon. 00:10:18.940 --> 00:10:22.520 And they've elevated the sex goddess Aphrodite. 00:10:23.180 --> 00:10:28.920 And they've elevated the power god Mars and the political god Caesar. 00:10:29.320 --> 00:10:29.420 Right? 00:10:29.660 --> 00:10:34.600 And Peter's saying, look, if you're looking to these things, 00:10:34.600 --> 00:10:41.139 if you're looking to these idols, expecting them to do for you what only the living God can do for you, 00:10:41.899 --> 00:10:47.680 if you take all of your hope and you load it into your money and into the markets, 00:10:48.460 --> 00:10:52.259 if you load all of your hope into romance and sex, 00:10:52.259 --> 00:11:01.319 if you put all of your hope into your career and your achievements that can garner social power for you, 00:11:01.360 --> 00:11:09.899 if you're looking to politics and to the state or to the comfort and pleasure that food and drink can give you, 00:11:10.700 --> 00:11:14.360 Peter says you're going to have a broken heart. 00:11:14.360 --> 00:11:22.279 If you're looking to any of these things to give you your sense of identity and belonging and meaning and purpose, 00:11:22.879 --> 00:11:24.139 it's going to break your heart. 00:11:24.220 --> 00:11:24.460 Why? 00:11:24.580 --> 00:11:27.419 Because it's contrary to your human nature. 00:11:57.059 This line stood out to me. 00:11:57.120 --> 00:11:57.339 It says, 00:11:57.339 --> 00:12:03.360 A man thought he could fly, so he jumped off the top of a ten-story building, 00:12:04.259 --> 00:12:07.639 and as he fell past the fifth floor, flapping his arms in the air, 00:12:07.639 --> 00:12:08.759 he was heard to say, 00:12:09.399 --> 00:12:10.419 So far, so good. 00:12:12.439 --> 00:12:13.600 So far, so good. 00:12:14.819 --> 00:12:17.899 When we live according to our fallen human desires, 00:12:18.039 --> 00:12:23.600 when we give ourselves to over-desire, to debauchery, brutality, idolatry, 00:12:23.840 --> 00:12:27.740 we're not actually liberating ourselves in the way that we think we are. 00:12:27.799 --> 00:12:29.120 We're destroying ourselves. 00:12:29.960 --> 00:13:10.120 --> 00:13:11.379 back in chapter 1, 00:13:12.120 --> 00:13:13.420 verse 3 of this letter, 00:13:13.419 --> 00:13:14.039 Peter says, 00:13:14.139 --> 00:13:18.519 God in his great mercy has given you new birth into a living hope. 00:13:19.699 --> 00:13:20.819 And later on in that chapter, 00:13:20.919 --> 00:13:21.439 verse 23, 00:13:21.539 --> 00:13:21.819 he says, 00:13:21.899 --> 00:13:27.039 You've been born again by the imperishable seed of the living and enduring word of God. 00:13:27.079 --> 00:13:28.419 And what he means when he says that, 00:13:28.459 --> 00:13:28.879 he says, 00:13:28.879 --> 00:13:31.279 When the gospel comes into our lives, 00:13:32.379 --> 00:13:35.079 and when you experience the new birth, 00:13:35.179 --> 00:13:36.679 when you're born again, 00:13:37.599 --> 00:13:38.779 born not physically, 00:13:38.980 --> 00:13:39.779 but spiritually, 00:13:39.779 --> 00:13:42.100 born not from your parents, 00:13:42.199 --> 00:13:43.939 but from God, 00:16:44.980 What is Peter saying? 00:16:45.060 --> 00:16:48.379 Well, he's saying that the Son of God, 00:16:49.080 --> 00:16:51.379 when he stepped out of eternity into time, 00:16:51.419 --> 00:16:53.639 when he came from heaven to earth 00:16:53.639 --> 00:16:55.279 and he took on human flesh, 00:16:56.179 --> 00:16:58.679 he did that with a certain attitude. 00:16:58.820 --> 00:17:00.279 He did that with a certain mentality, 00:17:01.159 --> 00:17:04.400 knowing that this was not going to be a walk in the park. 00:17:04.400 --> 00:17:05.120 Right? 00:17:06.200 --> 00:17:09.320 Jesus knew that in the incarnation, 00:17:09.500 --> 00:17:11.380 when he became a human being, 00:17:11.800 --> 00:17:14.019 that he was entering into a war zone. 00:17:15.300 --> 00:17:17.540 That he was going to be living in this battlefield. 00:17:18.800 --> 00:17:21.460 And that he was going into this cosmic conflict 00:17:21.460 --> 00:17:23.720 where the powers and principalities 00:17:23.720 --> 00:17:26.060 are arrayed against the living God. 00:17:26.120 --> 00:17:28.380 And he knew that he was coming into a situation 00:17:28.380 --> 00:17:33.540 where humanity had tragically given itself up 00:17:33.540 --> 00:17:35.480 and over to these desires 00:17:35.480 --> 00:17:39.640 that led to brutality and idolatry 00:17:39.640 --> 00:17:41.720 and all kind of destructive self-interest. 00:17:42.720 --> 00:17:43.880 And so what did Jesus do? 00:17:43.980 --> 00:17:46.120 Peter says he armed himself. 00:17:47.520 --> 00:17:48.740 Jesus armed himself. 00:17:49.120 --> 00:17:50.120 And of course, you know, 00:17:50.180 --> 00:17:52.400 this isn't the way that the world is supposed to be. 00:17:52.400 --> 00:17:54.780 God the Father made the world the point of all of that? 00:34:09.000 --> 00:34:14.380 Peter tells us in verse 11, so that in all things God may be 00:34:14.380 --> 00:34:15.679 praised through Jesus Christ. 00:34:16.340 -->
