says Black Lives Matter, 00:04:33.500 --> 00:04:35.159 regardless of what your t-shirt says, 00:04:35.160 --> 00:04:39.960 Deep down, we all share a common longing for a better world. 00:04:41.120 --> 00:04:48.440 And I think this is one of the reasons why Christianity is so unique when it comes to suffering. 00:04:48.880 --> 00:04:53.480 Because Buddhism says essentially that suffering is an illusion. 00:04:54.040 --> 00:05:00.720 Hinduism and some of the Eastern religions say that suffering is a punishment for sins we have committed in a past life. 00:05:00.720 --> 00:05:07.040 Religions like Islam say that suffering is a punishment for sins that we have committed in this life. 00:05:07.400 --> 00:05:12.160 Secular humanism says that suffering is essentially random and meaningless. every tear from every eye 00:06:57.120 --> 00:06:58.819 as everything is made new. 00:06:58.819 --> 00:07:02.980 That's what we're praying for when we pray for the coming of the kingdom. 00:07:02.980 --> 00:07:11.779 And what that means for life is it means that God's will will be enacted in every sphere of life. 00:07:12.500 --> 00:07:15.579 God's will will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 00:07:15.579 --> 00:07:25.259 So as the laws of physics govern the cosmos and bring order to chaos and make it possible for life to flourish, 00:07:25.699 --> 00:07:31.680 so we pray in this prayer that God's will would govern our lives. 00:07:32.339 --> 00:07:42.500 That it would govern us spiritually and emotionally and politically and economically and socially and vocationally. 00:07:42.500 happy to pray that God's will would be done in those lives or in that person's life. 00:08:45.940 --> 00:08:56.740 But when it comes to me, when it comes to the decisions that I make about how I spend my time and how I spend my money and how I treat people and what I prioritize, 00:08:56.740 --> 00:09:00.720 when it comes to those things, not so much. 00:09:01.759 --> 00:09:04.820 You know, my experience has been that with my lips I can pray, 00:09:05.180 --> 00:09:08.340 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done. 00:09:08.740 --> 00:09:13.620 But in the same instant, in my life, what I'm really saying is, 00:09:14.000 --> 00:09:15.100 My kingdom come. 00:09:15.860 --> 00:09:18.060 My will be done on earth. 00:09:18.059 --> 00:09:21.039 And that's a huge problem. 00:09:21.959 --> 00:09:36.339 And to make matters more complicated, it's very easy to justify this kind of posture when the kingdom of God, frankly, doesn't seem very relevant or realistic, given our present circumstances. 00:09:37.099 --> 00:09:40.019 Life on the ground is incredibly hard. 00:09:40.019 --> 00:09:48.100 And you asked specifically in this situation, how can we pray about something like the kingdom of God in the midst of a global pandemic? 00:09:49.120 --> 00:09:51.100 You know, and how can we do that with a straight face? 00:09:51.799 --> 00:09:57.159 How can we think about something like the kingdom of God when people are sick and dying, 00:09:57.360 --> 00:10:00.679 when the economy is shut down and so many people are unemployed? 00:10:00.679 --> 00:10:05.500 It seems like a kind of escapism, a kind of pie-in-the-sky optimism. 00:10:05.840 --> 00:10:07.399 You know, frankly, it feels like wishful thinking. 00:10:07.399 --> 00:10:14.860 And so I think a lot of people in times like this can say, well, that's just escapism. 00:10:15.439 --> 00:10:16.679 That's just fantasy. 00:10:17.079 --> 00:10:18.539 We need to be realistic. 00:10:18.740 --> 00:10:20.039 We need realistic solutions. 00:10:20.620 --> 00:10:22.439 And there's a lot of disillusionment out there. 00:10:23.220 --> 00:10:29.500 And, you know, I think this must have been how John the Baptist felt while he was sitting in prison awaiting his execution. 00:10:29.500 --> 00:10:37.139 The passage that we read a little while ago from Matthew chapter 11 is kind of like a case study of everything that we're talking about. 00:10:37.399 --> 00:10:47.679 The local ruler at the time, Herod Antipas, it was kind of widely known that he had gone and seduced the wife of his brother. 00:10:47.679 --> 00:10:52.579 And then he ended up leaving his wife and convincing her to leave his brother. 00:10:52.819 --> 00:10:54.100 And then he married her. 00:10:54.519 --> 00:10:55.699 And this was a scandal. 00:10:56.279 --> 00:10:58.799 And John the Baptist was a bold prophet. 00:10:58.799 --> 00:11:00.879 And he was courageous. 00:11:01.120 --> 00:11:05.979 And so he publicly rebuked Herod for this and called him to repent. 00:11:06.179 --> 00:11:08.639 And, you know, imagine that kind of thing happening. 00:11:09.179 --> 00:11:14.719 And yet he publicly confronts Herod and confronts the wrongness of what he's done. 00:11:14.819 --> 00:11:18.099 And, of course, Herod responds in kind by throwing John in prison. 00:11:18.100 --> 00:11:21.240 And, of course, John is in prison. 00:11:22.019 --> 00:11:27.639 And yet John's hope and the entire message of his ministry was that God's Messiah was coming. 00:11:28.820 --> 00:11:30.399 That's what John preached. 00:11:30.460 --> 00:11:31.700 And that was the source of his hope. 00:11:32.159 --> 00:11:36.519 And John believed that when this Messiah came that he would finally bring justice. 00:11:36.879 --> 00:11:39.879 That he would finally defeat all of God's enemies. 00:11:40.120 --> 00:11:42.160 That he would overthrow the Romans. 00:11:42.420 --> 00:11:45.759 That he would restore Israel as a nation state. 00:11:45.759 --> 00:11:50.279 And John believed that if this Messiah came and brought justice, 00:11:50.480 --> 00:11:52.879 that surely he would be on the right side of that justice. 00:11:53.439 --> 00:11:58.980 And so surely the Messiah would bring corrupt leaders like Herod down. 00:11:59.120 --> 00:12:03.279 And surely this Messiah would vindicate and set free people like John. 00:12:03.340 --> 00:12:05.200 Because John had taken a stand for justice. 00:12:05.899 --> 00:12:09.240 And John believed that Jesus was the Messiah. 00:12:10.580 --> 00:12:12.819 But the longer John sits in prison, 00:12:12.820 --> 00:12:17.000 the more disillusionment begins to creep in. 00:12:17.100 --> 00:12:20.100 The more questions begin to arise in his heart. 00:12:21.080 --> 00:12:27.140 And Jesus is out there healing people and helping people acknowledges the kingdom is a mystery. 00:18:06.079 --> 00:18:06.899 This is why Jesus, 00:18:06.899 --> 00:18:10.339 one of the reasons why Jesus taught about the kingdom using so many parables, Disillusionment, as painful as it can be, 00:21:01.500 --> 00:21:02.960 is ultimately a good thing. 00:21:04.079 --> 00:21:08.700 Because disillusionment literally means to be freed from an illusion. it opens us up to encounter the living God face-to-face. 00:21:41.879 --> 00:21:48.519 And He is far bigger and far more complex than anything that we can possibly understand or even imagine. greater than he. 00:25:31.580 --> 00:25:34.100 And what He means by that is that people of the kingdom, 00:25:34.099 --> 00:25:36.159 people like us who know Jesus Christ, 00:25:36.279 --> 00:25:38.899 who have been saved through His death and resurrection, 00:25:39.399 --> 00:25:42.379 that we are experiencing realities in the kingdom 00:25:42.379 --> 00:25:44.339 that John never even could have imagined. 00:25:44.859 --> 00:25:46.799 That we actually have the presence 00:25:46.799 --> 00:25:48.919 and the power of God inside us, 00:25:48.959 --> 00:25:51.019 which means that wherever we are, 00:25:51.279 --> 00:25:52.279 the kingdom is. 00:25:52.439 --> 00:25:55.399 That we can be and bring the kingdom wherever we go. 00:25:56.539 --> 00:25:57.919 And friends, that's why 00:26:17.000 This is why we are doing things 00:26:17.000 --> 00:26:19.299 like seeing people in our community 00:26:19.299 --> 00:26:21.720 who are making masks 00:26:21.720 --> 00:26:24.220 and donating them to people who need them. 00:26:24.259 --> 00:26:25.299 It's why these things matter. 00:26:25.399 --> 00:26:26.779 It's because these are signs 00:26:26.779 --> 00:26:27.879 that point
