00:06:01.259 --> 00:06:05.860 This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him. 00:06:05.860 --> 00:06:08.300 Because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, 00:06:08.759 --> 00:06:11.959 But he was even calling God his own father, 00:06:12.459 --> 00:06:15.839 Making himself equal with God. 00:06:16.219 --> 00:06:18.899 The grass withers and the flower fades, 00:06:19.639 --> 00:06:23.360 But the word of our God stands forever. 00:06:23.360 --> 00:06:31.639 This story that we just read is another of Jesus' healing miracles. 00:06:32.400 --> 00:06:34.439 And again, it is more than that. 00:06:34.860 --> 00:06:42.439 It's the third of the seven signs that John gives us to point to the identity of Jesus. 00:06:42.439 --> 00:06:48.139 So it's not surprising that this passage will unfold on multiple levels. 00:06:48.259 --> 00:06:50.860 Kind of like peeling back the layers of an onion. 00:06:52.959 --> 00:06:55.439 It makes it a little tough to discern. 00:06:55.540 --> 00:06:56.660 let's marvel at the miracle itself. 00:07:45.339 --> 00:07:52.579 Don't miss the fact that a man is being healed after 38 years of illness. 00:07:52.759 --> 00:07:54.959 Likely some sort of paralysis. 00:07:54.959 --> 00:08:02.680 Apparently, there was this pool near the sheep gate in Jerusalem back then. 00:08:02.739 --> 00:08:08.459 Where the common belief was that when the water was stirred up naturally from underground. 00:08:08.459 --> 00:08:11.620 Or as many believed supernaturally. 00:08:12.299 --> 00:08:14.299 It had healing powers. 00:08:15.459 --> 00:08:19.959 The first person into the water at that time would be healed. 00:08:19.959 --> 00:08:31.099 Well, for years, critics contended that there was no architectural structure like the one described here in verse 2 at all in the time of Jesus. 00:08:32.720 --> 00:08:36.819 Until it was discovered by 19th century archaeologists. 00:08:37.299 --> 00:08:38.559 And they've uncovered it. 00:08:38.559 --> 00:08:39.979 And sure enough, there they are. 00:08:40.159 --> 00:08:42.279 Five roofed colonnades. 00:08:42.500 --> 00:08:43.419 Just like this. 00:08:43.539 --> 00:08:46.759 And it's since been covered under multiple --> 00:08:56.500 Exactly where John places it in the first century. 00:08:56.500 --> 00:09:01.679 But even more than the historical nature of the pool. 00:09:02.519 --> 00:09:05.220 I hope you see the heart of Jesus here. 00:09:06.539 --> 00:09:08.580 Think about this place. 00:09:09.299 --> 00:09:13.480 This place was covered up with the blind. 00:09:14.980 --> 00:09:15.679 The lame. 00:09:16.460 --> 00:09:17.200 The paralyzed. 00:09:17.440 --> 00:09:18.899 Crowds of people. 00:09:19.220 --> 00:09:23.379 All hoping desperately for the right moment. 00:09:23.379 --> 00:09:28.620 And this was a place many of us would be sure not to go. 00:09:30.179 --> 00:09:33.799 But Jesus was sure not to miss. 00:09:34.500 --> 00:09:39.620 Many have noted that when Jesus was in Jerusalem, he frequented not palaces. 00:09:40.200 --> 00:09:42.600 Not the places of greatest power. 00:09:43.179 --> 00:09:46.299 But rather the places of greatest need. 00:09:47.139 --> 00:09:50.539 Don't you love his heart of compassion here in this? 00:09:50.539 --> 00:09:54.480 Is that what his people are like today? 00:09:54.819 --> 00:09:56.779 Are we drawn to the needy? 00:09:56.860 --> 00:09:58.039 To places like this? 00:09:58.379 --> 00:10:00.559 To standing against injustice? 00:10:01.039 --> 00:10:02.699 To loving the least? 00:10:03.039 --> 00:10:06.419 Are these the places we're sure to visit while we're on our vacation? 00:10:06.419 --> 00:10:11.779 This man doesn't even know Jesus. 00:10:13.419 --> 00:10:18.439 But Jesus knows that he has been there such a long time. 00:10:19.339 --> 00:10:22.919 And because of that moves toward him personally. 00:10:23.079 --> 00:10:26.439 Out of the whole crowd in order to bless him. 00:10:26.440 --> 00:10:32.060 So notice when Jesus asks if he wants to be healed. 00:10:32.440 --> 00:10:33.780 The man thinks immediately. 00:10:34.120 --> 00:10:35.600 I would say naturally. 00:10:36.340 --> 00:10:38.420 Of needing help into the water. 00:10:39.280 --> 00:10:40.400 Verse 7. 00:10:40.620 --> 00:10:41.800 He says, sir. 00:10:42.140 --> 00:10:46.060 I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up. 00:10:48.240 --> 00:10:49.420 Maybe you'll do that. 00:10:51.720 --> 00:10:55.760 Jesus, on the other hand, is thinking supernaturally. 00:10:55.759 --> 00:10:59.980 He redirects the man's plan for healing. 00:11:00.539 --> 00:11:02.419 Healing again with a word. 00:11:03.559 --> 00:11:07.620 Commanding the man to get up and take his mat. 00:11:07.779 --> 00:11:08.740 Which he does. 00:11:09.159 --> 00:11:10.059 And he's off. 00:11:11.519 --> 00:11:13.819 The life of the lowliest. 00:11:14.220 --> 00:11:18.500 Transformed by the power and mercy of Jesus. 00:11:18.500 --> 00:11:18.700 Jesus. 00:11:20.700 --> 00:11:22.379 It's a great picture of who he is. 00:11:22.460 --> 00:11:27.600 Once again, though, it's not merely an amazing miracle that Jesus does. 00:11:27.980 --> 00:11:33.320 Alongside of that, it's a sign that points to who Jesus really is. 00:11:33.799 --> 00:11:39.919 Jesus' power to heal, to restore, is not bound by distance. 00:11:39.919 --> 00:11:41.519 We saw last week. 00:11:41.720 --> 00:11:41.840 Right? 00:11:41.840 --> 00:11:47.840 Nor by time or severity of the situation. 00:11:48.660 --> 00:11:49.800 We see that here. 00:11:50.399 --> 00:11:54.320 He doesn't merely know how to access supernatural power. 00:11:54.460 --> 00:11:56.980 Like how to get you into the pool quickly at the right time. 00:11:57.399 --> 00:12:00.940 No, he brings the supernatural power himself. 00:12:00.940 --> 00:12:09.500 Beyond that, we get a picture of the Messiah who has come to seek and to save the lost as promised. 00:12:09.980 --> 00:12:12.100 Twice he seeks out this man, doesn't he? 00:12:13.100 --> 00:12:14.620 First to heal his body. 00:12:16.360 --> 00:12:21.180 But the next time, Jesus finds the man in the temple courts. 00:12:21.560 --> 00:12:22.620 I mean, it's crowds of people. 00:12:22.740 --> 00:12:23.480 It's a feast, right? 00:12:24.120 --> 00:12:25.220 Remember what's going on? 00:12:25.260 --> 00:12:26.200 Lots of people here. 00:12:26.200 --> 00:12:35.000 And Jesus finds him and he makes sure that he knows that he needs more than the physical healing he's received. 00:12:36.759 --> 00:12:37.940 I'll be honest with you. 00:12:38.020 --> 00:12:42.740 This verse, the comment Jesus makes, verse 14, is hard to understand. 00:12:44.000 --> 00:12:51.800 It may mean that this man's illness was connected to a specific sin in his life. 00:12:51.799 --> 00:13:03.359 But even if that's true here, Jesus is clear elsewhere that a particular sickness and a particular sin shouldn't be assumed to have that direct connection. 00:13:04.459 --> 00:13:12.279 I think the best understanding of what Jesus is saying is, you are well physically. 00:13:13.159 --> 00:13:14.839 But that's not all. 00:13:15.120 --> 00:13:16.479 There's something else important. 00:13:16.480 --> 00:13:25.940 You also must repent of your sin, not continue in it, or you will face eternal judgment. 00:13:26.680 --> 00:13:32.200 That would be certainly the much worse thing than being paralyzed. 00:13:33.360 --> 00:13:41.460 And Jesus, who didn't get to say this earlier, has gone out of his way to find a man who hasn't expressed faith to this point in the story, 00:13:41.460 --> 00:13:48.160 to make sure he knows that there's a paralysis in his soul, not merely in his body that has been taken away. 00:13:48.980 --> confusion and conversation. 00:17:55.079 --> 00:18:03.179 The Jews, our translation said, what's meant there is the religious leaders of that area around Jerusalem at the time. 00:18:04.059 --> 00:18:13.919 They're more concerned that this man is carrying his mat on the Sabbath than that he's walking for the first time in 38 years. 00:18:14.500 --> 00:18:15.179 Can you imagine? 00:18:15.180 --> 00:18:21.279 Carrying the mat does not violate a specific Old Testament law. 00:18:22.299 --> 00:18:26.120 But the law does say not to work on the Lord's day. 00:18:26.720 --> 00:18:33.840 So Jewish tradition at this time had codified 39 different categories of forbidden work. 00:18:35.140 --> 00:18:38.279 This fit one of those categories. 00:18:38.820 --> 00:18:41.180 Jesus was clearly well aware of that. 00:18:41.180 --> 00:18:47.299 His words when he heals the man and tells him to take up his mat confirm that. 00:18:47.299 --> 00:18:54.859 Well, as the story goes, after seeking to pass the blame for this violation, right? 00:18:55.019 --> 00:19:00.839 This newly healed man admits that he actually has no idea who it is he's passing the blame to. 00:19:02.319 --> 00:19:03.680 He doesn't know who healed him. 00:19:05.000 --> 00:19:08.019 When Jesus finds him again in the temple, the man gets his name. 00:19:08.019 --> 00:19:15.099 He tells the authorities this was the guy and they begin persecuting Jesus because of such Sabbath activities. 00:19:15.099 --> 00:19:20.579 What's really interesting here is what Jesus says in verse 17. 00:19:21.480 --> 00:19:24.039 What's his defense when they come to him? 00:19:24.519 --> 00:19:26.480 Does he just not care about the Sabbath? 00:19:26.599 --> 00:19:27.699 It's really not important anymore? 00:19:27.959 --> 00:19:29.299 No, that's not it. 00:19:30.619 --> 00:19:31.740 A little background. 00:19:31.740 --> 00:19:43.279 The Jews taught then that the only person who could work on the Sabbath without sinning was Yahweh, God himself. 00:19:44.140 --> 00:19:45.880 He created the world. 00:19:46.359 --> 00:19:49.380 He created the Sabbath on the seventh day. 00:19:49.980 --> 00:19:55.079 But then, of course, he had to sustain all of his creation all the time. 00:19:55.079 --> 00:20:00.180 His work of sustaining and restoring the creation was constant. 00:20:01.740 --> 00:20:09.380 So Jesus' explanation for his work
