what is known as a majority-minority country, 00:00:20.339 --> 00:00:25.859 meaning that minorities make up over 50% of the population. 00:00:26.039 --> 00:00:29.300 So the United States is becoming extraordinarily diverse. 00:00:29.300 --> 00:00:33.920 And in fact, Andy Crouch, who studies and writes about culture, 00:00:34.320 --> 00:00:41.560 says that there may never have been a society in history with more diversity than the United States, 00:00:42.060 --> 00:00:48.840 with more cultural diversity, religious diversity, political diversity, and of course racial diversity. 00:00:48.960 --> 00:00:51.880 The United States is perhaps the most diverse country ever. 00:00:52.260 --> 00:00:56.719 More importantly, he goes on to say that there are very few models out there 00:00:56.719 --> 00:01:01.339 for how such a diverse society can sustain itself. 00:01:02.019 --> 00:01:05.280 But if you look at history, there are plenty of examples of failure. 00:01:06.560 --> 00:01:13.680 The only society in history that comes close in terms of diversity to the United States is the Roman Empire. 00:01:14.859 --> 00:01:19.019 And in the Roman Empire, we see something very unique in history. 00:01:19.019 --> 00:01:26.500 It was in the Roman Empire that the world first caught a glimpse of the power of the Christian gospel to unite people. 00:01:27.539 --> 00:01:32.000 So even as the Roman Empire was crumbling and collapsing, 00:01:32.859 --> 00:01:40.399 a community emerged with a kind of diversity that the world had never seen before. 00:01:40.400 --> 00:01:45.960 And so Paul's letter to the Galatians, which we started looking at back in the fall, 00:01:46.240 --> 00:01:49.420 shows us how such a thing is possible. 00:01:49.740 --> 00:01:54.400 It's all about the power of the gospel to transform the way we see ourselves 00:01:54.400 --> 00:01:57.240 and the way we see other people. 00:01:58.400 --> 00:01:59.900 It's a total transformation. 00:01:59.900 --> 00:02:06.219 So Paul spends the first three chapters of Galatians, which we looked at in the fall, 00:02:06.580 --> 00:02:08.920 clarifying exactly what the gospel is, 00:02:08.920 --> 00:02:13.920 and then he tells You know, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the great luminaries 00:02:34.060 --> 00:02:41.060 fighting for racial reconciliation and equality and justice in our country. 00:02:41.200 --> 00:02:44.000 We, of course, celebrating his memory this weekend. 00:02:44.159 --> 00:02:47.620 And this verse was part of his inspiration. 00:02:47.860 --> 00:02:52.860 This was one of the references he made to Scripture in his most famous speech 00:02:52.860 --> 00:02:55.259 a half century ago in this very city. 00:02:55.259 --> 00:03:01.419 In fact, three of the four lessons we just read were referenced in that same speech. 00:03:01.539 --> 00:03:05.000 This fueled and kindled his imagination. 00:03:06.519 --> 00:03:11.579 And so today we're going to ask what the gospel has to say to us about racial division 00:03:11.579 --> 00:03:15.840 and reconciliation as things currently stand in our culture. 00:03:16.199 --> 00:03:18.439 And we obviously can't say everything. 00:03:19.079 --> 00:03:22.799 There's infinitely more to say than we're going to have time for this morning. 00:03:22.800 --> 00:03:28.700 But we can look at first what this means, this verse that we just read. 00:03:28.880 --> 00:03:30.219 What is it actually saying? 00:03:30.420 --> 00:03:36.020 And then we're going to draw out a few implications that God willing will speak to us where we are this morning. foolishness of the cross would magnify your glory. 00:04:13.039 --> 00:04:18.879 And that we would know whatever fruit comes of us opening your word, that it comes from the power of your spirit. --> 00:04:32.500 So we're looking at Galatians 3, particularly verse 28. 00:04:32.819 --> 00:04:39.519 But I want to bring you up to date because this is the culmination of something that Paul has been laying out for several chapters. 00:04:39.600 --> 00:04:41.339 And I want us all to have that fresh in mind. 00:04:41.339 --> 00:04:43.479 The context is simply this. 00:04:43.560 --> 00:04:52.099 In Galatia, certain Jewish Christians, not all of them, but certain Jewish Christians were pushing a policy of racial segregation. 00:04:53.099 --> 00:04:54.359 The idea was this. 00:04:54.399 --> 00:05:01.659 That even though you had Jewish converts to Christianity and Gentile, non-Jewish, ethnically non-Jewish converts to Christianity. 00:05:02.059 --> 00:05:08.339 That because some of those Gentile converts had not also become Jewish, there was a chance that they were still unclean. 00:05:08.339 --> 00:05:08.859 Unclean. 00:05:09.299 --> 00:05:20.819 And so the fear from the Jewish Christians was that if they were to associate with and eat with and be in community with unclean people, they would also become unclean. 00:05:20.899 --> 00:05:21.659 They would be tainted. 00:05:21.779 --> 00:05:24.559 And so they were pushing a policy of segregation. 00:05:24.699 --> 00:05:32.079 We need to keep them separate until they become ritually clean by being circumcised and by coming under the Mosaic law. 00:05:32.079 --> 00:05:34.060 So this is the issue at stake. 00:05:34.139 --> 00:05:37.899 It's a kind of religious racial segregation policy. 00:05:37.899 --> 00:05:48.579 And Paul gets wind of this and it infuriates him, a kind of righteous indignation because he realizes that this is a violation of the gospel itself. 00:05:48.979 --> 00:05:53.919 And so he writes this explosive response which we call Galatians. 00:05:54.279 --> 00:05:59.659 And so just to summarize the major points he makes, in chapter 1, verses 3 and 4, he says, 00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:05.159 Jesus Christ gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present age. 00:06:05.239 --> 00:06:05.959 That's the gospel. 00:06:05.959 --> 00:06:14.659 Jesus Christ has delivered us from our sins and from this present evil age into a new way of being and a new way of living. 00:06:15.519 --> 00:06:17.839 And as a result, in chapter 2, verse 20, he says, 00:06:18.000 --> 00:06:24.000 I myself, Paul, through my faith in Jesus Christ, have been crucified with Christ. 00:06:24.500 --> 00:06:25.740 And then he makes this staggering claim. 00:06:25.979 --> 00:06:29.839 It's no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me. 00:06:29.919 --> 00:06:33.060 There's been a kind of death and resurrection in my life. 00:06:33.060 --> 00:06:39.819 And then finally, this culminates in chapter 3, verses 27 and 28. 00:06:40.079 --> 00:06:41.579 And then he says, so that's what happened to me. 00:06:41.740 --> 00:06:42.540 Now what about you? 00:06:43.220 --> differences remain as a testimony to God's beautiful, limitless creativity. 00:07:19.920 --> 00:07:27.720 And yet the penalties and the privileges associated with racial identity are eradicated. 00:07:28.780 --> 00:07:34.160 Now that's a massive thing to say in any age, especially in Paul's day. 00:07:35.040 --> 00:07:42.120 He says the reason that we can believe this is because now, regardless of cultural ethnic identity, 00:07:42.120 --> 00:07:54.660 regardless of skin color, we have all been granted the same status and the same privileges as the Son of God Himself. 00:07:55.819 --> 00:08:07.600 And he says this, we cannot overestimate how significant this is because he's describing the emergence of a society that has absolute unity and diversity. 00:08:07.600 --> 00:08:12.120 It has absolute equality and individuality. 00:08:13.020 --> 00:08:18.020 You know, this is the kind of society that Martin Luther King dreamed of. 00:08:18.780 --> 00:08:22.240 It's the kind of society I think that we all long for. 00:08:22.480 --> 00:08:27.340 And more importantly, it's the kind of society that we're called as the church to build. 00:08:28.820 --> 00:08:31.800 It's 00:09:18.239 --> 00:09:24.939 But I think that part of our society's inability to really deal with racial division, 00:09:25.179 --> 00:09:29.299 to really have the conversations we need to be having, even though there's a lot of talk out there. 00:09:29.299 --> 00:09:34.199 Part of our inability to really deal with it is that we have a very rose-colored view of human nature. 00:09:36.219 --> 00:09:39.459 You know, most people today don't believe in the concept of sin. 00:09:40.059 --> 00:09:42.939 A lot of Christians today don't really believe in the concept of sin. 00:09:42.959 --> 00:09:46.879 Or if we do, it's those people, but not me, right? 00:09:46.879 --> 00:09:53.139 The idea of original sin, being born into sin, born guilty, is very alien to most people today. 00:09:53.559 --> 00:09:58.620 So the widely accepted approach to racism, you know, when you look at a social ill like racism, 00:09:58.720 --> 00:10:02.720 the widely accepted approach is that it is, of course, an outside-in problem. 00:10:02.720 --> 00:10:04.519 Because I know that I'm inherently good. 00:10:05.700 --> 00:10:08.799 And so something like racism can only be explained as an outside-in problem. 00:10:08.840 --> 00:10:12.980 I was born good, but then I was influenced in problematic ways. 00:10:12.980 --> 00:10:16.220 And, of course, the belief is that it needs an outside-in solution. 00:10:16.879 --> 00:10:20.539 Last year, or maybe about a year and a half ago, the Washington Post had an article, 00:10:21.240 --> 00:10:24.059 title of the article, Why Are People Still Racist? 00:10:24.220 --> 00:10:27.860 What Science Says About America's Race Problem? 00:10:27.939 --> 00:10:34.279 And they trot out the Ivy League experts who kind of weigh in and give us the kind of definitive answer to this question. 00:10:34.679 --> 00:10:38.019 And luckily for us, they say, in some ways, it's super simple. 00:10:39.399 --> 00:10:40.120 Well, that's good. 00:10:40.799 --> 00:10:41.740 People learn. 00:10:42.679 --> 00:10:43.519 Here's why. 00:10:43.519 --> 00:10:47.299 People learn to be whatever their society and culture teaches them. 00:10:47.879 --> 00:10:51.039 This is not the product of some deep-seated evil heart. 00:10:51.399 --> 00:10:55.000 It comes from the environment, the air all around us. 00:10:55.840 --> 00:10:57.600 So it's an outside-in problem. 00:10:58.100 --> 00:11:03.220 Which is interesting because if racism were simply a product of culture and environment, 00:11:03.220 --> 00:11:10.620 then you would think that as we have worked for decades upon decades upon decades to change the culture 00:11:10.620 --> 00:11:14.019 and to educate people and to change the environment, 00:11:14.779 --> 00:11:19.800 that younger generations would be markedly less racist than older generations. 00:11:19.940 --> 00:11:21.180 That's what you would think, right? 00:11:21.259 --> 00:11:24.040 Because this is the solution that we've been employing. 00:11:24.039 --> 00:11:29.879 But in fact, research has found that young white subjects, 00:11:30.480 --> 00:11:37.019 you take a bunch of young white people who are markedly more progressive on a variety of issues, 00:11:37.419 --> 00:11:45.860 it turns out those people are still every bit as negatively biased when it comes to race as older white people. 00:11:46.139 --> 00:11:51.879 In other words, there's no measurable difference between the generations when it comes to this specific issue. 00:11:51.879 --> 00:11:56.700 And in fact, human beings actually seem to be hardwired for bias. 00:11:57.720 --> 00:11:58.899 I don't know if you've seen this research. 00:11:59.019 --> 00:12:06.039 It's very interesting that researchers can take a bunch of people who look them into two groups, you know, odd numbers and even numbers, whatever. 00:12:13.480 --> 00:12:23.700 And within hours of doing that, people will start to exhibit significant negative bias toward people in the other group. 00:12:24.600 --> 00:12:26.659 I mean, that's crazy, right? 00:12:27.500 --> 00:12:31.879 We're the even numbers, you're the odd numbers, but all of a sudden you start assuming they must have lower intelligence, 00:12:32.080 --> 00:12:34.279 they must stink, they must be, you know, I don't... 00:12:34.279 --> 00:12:38.899 And you begin to make all of these assumptions, and it's the in-group, out-group bias. 00:12:38.899 --> 00:12:42.579 And this seems to be deeply wired into human nature. 00:12:43.600 --> 00:12:51.340 And so the problem that confronts us is that the reality of racism completely blasts apart the myth of progress. 00:12:52.159 --> 00:12:56.959 And it completely blasts apart this rose-colored sense that we have of human nature. 00:12:57.139 --> 00:13:03.399 It sort of confronts us with the fact that we're not the good, morally upstanding people that we pretend to be, 00:13:03.399 --> 00:13:09.379 that we actually have deeply ingrained tendencies that are very harmful to us and other people. 00:13:09.819 --> 00:13:15.500 And, you know, these deep, ingrained, harmful tendencies, the word for that in the Bible is sin. 00:13:17.419 --> 00:13:19.419 Sin, the word, we don't like to talk about that. 00:13:20.439 --> 00:13:24.659 But the problem is, sin cannot simply be re-educated out of us. 00:13:25.100 --> 00:13:28.620 Sin, we can't just be re-encultured to be less sinful. 00:13:28.620 --> 00:13:32.940 The only answer to sin is full spiritual renewal. 00:13:33.379 --> 00:13:37.159 It's the only thing racism, we're talking about systemic issues. 00:14:51.000 --> 00:15:01.939 We're talking about the fact, this is just a number, that if you apply for a job with a white-sounding name, you're 50% more We're talking about discriminatory mortgage lending practices that happened way back in the 30s that continue to shape communities today and lock them in cycles of poverty. 00:15:39.120 --> 00:16:26.399 --> 00:16:35.779 What happens when you tell a person like that, that they have been born into racist systems and that they have benefited from those systems their entire life? 00:16:35.980 --> 00:16:36.980 Because here's the rub. 00:16:36.980 --> 00:16:47.300 You can be ideologically opposed to racism and yet tacitly supportive of racism at the same time. 00:16:48.120 --> don't have the gospel to go to, you really only have two ways, two options open to you to deal with that moral panic. 00:17:26.279 --> 00:17:30.359 You know, some people deal with that moral panic by
