young ones who were there last week out here tonight as well. 00:00:29.920 --> 00:00:39.500 You may remember that this was one of the verses that we were looking at, one of the passages that we looked at during that service last week. 00:00:39.500 --> 00:00:53.939 And it reminds us in a week when we are remembering, it's Christmas time, is remember the birth of Jesus, that our focus is to be on that, that Jesus came into the world. 00:00:54.480 --> 00:01:01.000 That amazing wonder of Jesus coming into the world, of God sending his son. 00:01:01.000 --> 00:01:09.260 Because we are a forgetful people, one of the things that we thought about looking at this verse was how easy it is to forget. 00:01:09.799 --> 00:01:14.900 And we're asking the young ones a question, what did you get for Christmas last year? 00:01:15.519 --> 00:01:17.780 Some could remember, some forgot. 00:01:18.140 --> 00:01:27.920 But then when you start going back further and further in the years, it's often we've forgotten what we got in these previous years because we are very forgetful people. 00:01:27.920 --> 00:01:36.219 And in this week we can become so distracted by these things that we forget the main purpose of what it is we are to remember. 00:01:37.260 --> 00:01:40.780 There's a well-known, very famous Christian book. 00:01:40.900 --> 00:01:43.019 It's called The Pilgrim's Progress. 00:01:44.400 --> 00:01:45.820 Many will have heard about it. 00:01:45.900 --> 00:01:48.320 Many of you, I'm sure, have read that book. 00:01:48.920 --> 00:01:52.379 It's a book about a man called Christian. 00:01:53.079 --> 00:01:55.379 And it's a journey he's going on. 00:01:55.379 --> 00:02:07.439 And it's full of different characters, people who have given names, and each name has meaning, and different places that the journey takes him from and leads him to along the way. 00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:11.639 He begins his journey in a place called the City of Destruction. 00:02:12.419 --> 00:02:15.219 That's a place where he is just lost. 00:02:15.219 --> 00:02:25.000 And his journey ultimately takes him to another city, to the celestial city, which is really what we would call heaven. 00:02:25.539 --> 00:02:27.000 And the Christian is taken there. 00:02:27.060 --> 00:02:33.599 But on the journey, he passes through many different places and meets many different people. 00:02:34.259 --> 00:02:42.639 And at one point in his journey, he comes to Forgetful Green, a place called Forgetful Green. 00:02:42.639 --> 00:02:50.539 But in this place, there is someone who is able to remind all who are on this journey of what is important. 00:02:50.759 --> 00:02:53.179 And the man is called Great Heart. 00:02:53.839 --> 00:02:55.859 That's the man's name, Great Heart. 00:02:56.239 --> 00:02:58.899 And it really means this man called Great Heart. 00:02:58.959 --> 00:03:03.959 He's almost like a preacher who is there to guide people along the way. 00:03:04.039 --> 00:03:07.859 He's got a heart for the people to guide them along the way. 00:03:07.860 --> 00:03:17.820 And when they come to Forgetful Green, Great Heart says to those on the journey that Forgetful Green is the most dangerous place in all of these parts, he says. 00:03:18.380 --> 00:03:29.420 For if at any time the pilgrims meet with any pressure, it is when they forget what favors they have received and how unworthy they are of them. 00:03:30.160 --> 00:03:35.620 We forget the favors that we have received, all that God has done for us. 00:03:35.620 --> 00:03:37.060 It's a dangerous thing. 00:03:37.539 --> 00:03:40.520 And how unworthy we are of them. 00:03:41.200 --> 00:03:47.420 And so it's important for us to remember what is right, what is important at this time of year. 00:03:47.439 --> we can be so forgetful. 00:03:56.960 --> 00:04:14.680 When you think of the two really most significant dates in the Christian calendar, when the birth of Jesus Christ is remembered at Christmas, and when his death is remembered at Easter time, where our focus should be clearly on the wonder of these things, 00:04:15.260 --> 00:04:19.699 it is the two times in the year that have almost become the most materialistic. 00:04:19.699 --> 00:04:26.539 Where it becomes all about gifts and giving, and we so easily forget about the Lord Jesus. 00:04:26.959 --> 00:04:29.120 And it's something we can all be guilty of. 00:04:29.759 --> 00:04:34.899 It's something we've maybe been guilty of in this past week, and maybe guilty of in this coming week. 00:04:35.199 --> 00:04:42.560 We're caught up in the busyness of everything that's going on, and we forget what we should be really remembering. 00:04:42.560 --> 00:04:49.639 How significant it is that Jesus came into the world, that he was born into this world. 00:04:50.079 --> 00:04:58.920 And how significant it is that he had a purpose in coming into this world, that he would ultimately give his life for his people. 00:04:59.639 --> 00:05:01.639 So we are a forgetful people. 00:05:02.259 --> 00:05:10.500 But when we turn to the Word of God, to the Bible, it reminds us of the real significance of all of these things. 00:05:10.500 --> 00:05:17.360 So that when we have the likes of the first chapter of John, and you start to read there, it says, 00:05:17.579 --> 00:05:21.120 The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. 00:05:22.000 --> 00:05:27.199 That Jesus came into this world, that God sent his Son into this world. 00:05:27.279 --> 00:05:30.160 Isn't it amazing to think of that? 00:05:30.839 --> 00:05:35.379 How we've forgotten the wonder of it, that Jesus came into the world. 00:05:35.379 --> 00:05:37.939 It's not just a story for Christmas. 00:05:37.939 --> 00:05:40.719 It's not just a story for Easter time. 00:05:41.420 --> 00:05:44.659 It's not a story confined to the history books. 00:05:45.480 --> 00:05:51.319 It is the most important thing we can hear today and every day of the year. 00:05:51.420 --> 00:05:53.279 The love of God towards us. 00:05:53.399 --> 00:05:58.120 The grace that he has shown to us in providing a Savior. 00:05:58.319 --> 00:06:02.899 Giving a Savior for all who will put their trust in him. 00:06:02.899 --> 00:06:15.879 And here in 1 Timothy 1, verse 15, Paul is showing just how important, just how significant this was for himself. 00:06:16.639 --> 00:06:19.759 And how it is to be important for us too. 00:06:20.399 --> 00:06:22.879 Why did Jesus come into the world? 00:06:23.560 --> 00:06:28.879 Why do we remember his birth and his death, his resurrection and his ascension? 00:06:28.879 --> 00:06:36.759 Well, Paul reminds us here in this verse, the saying is trustworthy, deserving of full acceptance, 00:06:37.339 --> 00:06:42.100 that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 00:06:42.839 --> 00:06:46.120 Why did he come to save sinners? 00:06:46.219 --> 00:06:53.279 To offer every one of us that hope of salvation through faith in him. 00:06:53.279 --> 00:06:59.539 We looked at it last week, but I want to just look at it in a little bit more detail this evening, this verse. 00:07:00.119 --> 00:07:06.439 And really we're going to break it down into three bits, using the words that we find in this verse. 00:07:06.559 --> 00:07:10.119 The first thing is that it is a trustworthy saying. 00:07:11.019 --> 00:07:14.899 And then it says it's deserving of full acceptance. 00:07:15.339 --> 00:07:17.500 So these are our first two points. 00:07:17.599 --> 00:07:19.599 A trustworthy saying. 00:07:19.600 --> 00:07:22.720 Let's think a little bit about what this means. 00:07:23.680 --> 00:07:26.800 As Paul writes here, he's writing to Timothy. 00:07:26.920 --> 00:07:29.240 And Timothy is much younger than Paul. 00:07:29.400 --> 00:07:31.180 Paul is an older man now. 00:07:31.300 --> 00:07:33.820 He's experienced much in life. 00:07:33.879 --> 00:07:37.360 And now he's passing the gospel on to Timothy. 00:07:38.180 --> 00:07:45.180 And as he's doing so, he's not just someone who has been at a distance from life and all that it means. 00:07:45.180 --> 00:07:49.079 All the challenges and now having faith in the Lord Jesus. 00:07:49.079 --> 00:07:55.699 It's not just something that he's heard about or just learned in a classroom or anything like that. 00:07:55.860 --> 00:07:58.660 It's through very practical experience. 00:07:58.879 --> 00:08:06.420 His life has been full of thinking he was doing right with God only to realize he was miles away from God. 00:08:06.960 --> 00:08:11.139 But he says to us here that something changed his life. 00:08:11.139 --> 00:08:14.199 Verse 12 to verse 17. 00:08:14.659 --> 00:08:17.039 It's almost like a small digression. 00:08:17.180 --> 00:08:19.240 A little diversion that Paul takes. 00:08:19.860 --> 00:08:26.599 And it's really reminding us and speaking about his own experience of the wonder of the grace of God. 00:08:26.719 --> 00:08:28.120 In verse 14 it says, 00:08:28.899 --> 00:08:36.720 The grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 00:08:36.720 --> 00:08:40.779 He's got this amazing testimony to give. 00:08:40.960 --> 00:08:44.820 The grace of God has overflowed to him. 00:08:45.519 --> 00:08:48.500 This grace that is in Christ Jesus. 00:08:48.980 --> 00:08:53.180 It is what has completely transformed his life. 00:08:53.720 --> 00:08:57.480 So here is someone who knows what he's talking about. 00:08:57.560 --> 00:09:01.000 He's experienced it in such a wonderful way. 00:09:01.000 --> 00:09:09.360 His life has been totally changed and transformed by this grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:09:09.480 --> 00:09:12.600 And so he's saying here in verse 15, 00:09:13.139 --> 00:09:17.539 This saying is trustworthy and true. 00:09:18.980 --> 00:09:24.860 I'm sure Paul maybe at times came along to this forgetful green himself. 00:09:25.000 --> 00:09:29.379 Times when he was maybe distracted and was starting to forget things. 00:09:29.379 --> 00:09:35.639 But what you often find with Paul as he's writing is he takes frequent trips down memory lane. 00:09:36.639 --> 00:09:41.759 He always comes back to reflect on his life in a way where he doesn't forget what he was. 00:09:41.860 --> 00:09:44.720 He realizes how far away from God he was. 00:09:44.799 --> 00:09:46.559 How bad a person he was. 00:09:47.100 --> 00:09:50.799 But then he comes to marvel at the grace of God. 00:09:51.559 --> 00:09:54.860 He's reminding us of his past, of his sins. 00:09:54.860 --> 00:09:57.259 It says that in verse 13, 00:09:57.419 --> 00:10:03.259 He was formerly a blasphemer, persecutor, insolent opponent, but I received mercy. 00:10:04.060 --> 00:10:09.639 So he's talking about his past, but he's seeing the wonderful mercy of God. 00:10:10.340 --> 00:10:15.240 And as he goes on speaking in this way, he's speaking about it in this grace. 00:10:15.700 --> 00:10:17.440 It is something that is trustworthy. 00:10:18.120 --> 00:10:20.720 Something that you can rely on. 00:10:20.980 --> 00:10:23.360 Because it comes from God. 00:10:23.360 --> 00:10:28.519 Paul uses this phrase, this is a trustworthy saying, five times. 00:10:28.759 --> 00:10:32.159 As he writes to Timothy and also to Titus. 00:10:33.060 --> 00:10:38.840 And as he's writing to them, he's trying to put across a particular point saying, 00:10:39.039 --> 00:10:41.960 This is so important for you to remember. 00:10:42.360 --> 00:10:45.180 This is a trustworthy saying. 00:10:45.680 --> 00:10:48.039 It's important for you. 00:10:48.039 --> 00:10:55.279 And he's saying this in light of others who are coming and telling lies and seeking to lead them astray. 00:10:55.919 --> 00:10:58.819 You see that in verse 3 and 4 of this chapter. 00:10:59.699 --> 00:11:00.899 Where he's saying to Timothy, 00:11:01.039 --> 00:11:03.099 I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, 00:11:03.240 --> 00:11:09.559 Remain at Ephesus that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, 00:11:09.919 --> 00:11:13.939 nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. 00:11:13.940 --> 00:11:17.580 So there's all of these other things that people are teaching. 00:11:18.200 --> 00:11:19.420 And they're not trustworthy. 00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:20.920 They are lies. 00:11:21.420 --> 00:11:23.220 They are taking them away from God. 00:11:23.920 --> 00:11:25.260 But here is Paul saying, 00:11:25.620 --> 00:11:28.700 But this, this is trustworthy. 00:11:29.040 --> 00:11:31.880 This is the very word of God. 00:11:31.980 --> 00:11:34.980 This is God speaking to us. 00:11:34.980 --> 00:11:38.740 And so it's important for us to listen. 00:11:40.039 --> 00:11:42.120 Do you believe throughout the Bible in the Old and the New Testament, 00:12:02.460 --> 00:12:04.220 do you believe what it says? 00:12:04.220 --> 00:12:07.420 Do you believe that God is speaking to us? 00:12:08.060 --> 00:12:09.500 Well, it is all trustworthy. 00:12:10.560 --> 00:12:15.000 Every word that God has given is trustworthy for us. 00:12:16.080 --> 00:12:17.720 To give you an example, 00:12:18.720 --> 00:12:23.320 there was a man called Matthew Morrie. 00:12:24.340 --> 00:12:27.379 And he was a naval officer in the 1800s. 00:12:28.080 --> 00:12:31.420 He had been at sea for many years. 00:12:31.419 --> 00:12:33.479 But as he was getting older, 00:12:33.779 --> 00:12:34.939 he became unwell. 00:12:36.059 --> 00:12:38.179 And during his time of being unwell, 00:12:38.799 --> 00:12:40.339 he was reading the Bible. 00:12:40.639 --> 00:12:41.779 He was a Christian man. 00:12:42.620 --> 00:12:44.179 And as he was reading the Bible, 00:12:44.759 --> 00:12:46.919 two things stood out to him. 00:12:47.679 --> 00:12:50.740 One was Psalm 8 and verse 8. 00:12:50.740 --> 00:12:53.139 And there it speaks about, 00:12:53.139 --> 00:12:56.580 whatsoever walketh through the paths of the sea. 00:12:57.779 --> 00:13:00.019 And this resonated with him, 00:13:00.080 --> 00:13:00.960 having been at sea, 00:13:01.379 --> 00:13:04.899 whatever walketh through the paths of the sea. 00:13:05.440 --> 00:13:07.259 And he started repeating this phrase, 00:13:07.360 --> 00:13:08.779 the paths of the sea, 00:13:09.340 --> 00:13:10.779 the paths of the sea. 00:13:10.779 --> 00:13:13.879 And what he began to realize was 00:13:13.879 --> 00:13:17.019 that there were paths in the sea. 00:13:17.899 --> 00:13:20.559 There were currents in the sea. 00:13:21.419 --> 00:13:23.720 And he realized this over his years at sea, 00:13:23.799 --> 00:13:24.860 that there were places where 00:13:24.860 --> 00:13:27.579 there were times when you were going against the current 00:13:27.579 --> 00:13:28.799 and it was slowing you down. 00:13:29.220 --> 00:13:31.319 And other times you were going with the current 00:13:31.319 --> 00:13:33.459 and it was helping you go faster. 00:13:33.919 --> 00:13:36.439 So this verse began to speak to him. 00:13:37.159 --> 00:13:39.179 And another verse spoke to him as well. 00:13:39.179 --> 00:13:41.159 Ecclesiastes 1 verse 6. 00:13:41.259 --> 00:13:43.299 The wind blows to the south 00:13:43.299 --> 00:13:44.620 and goes round to the north. 00:13:44.759 --> 00:13:47.339 Around and around goes the wind. 00:13:47.479 --> 00:13:49.699 And on its circuit, the wind returns. 00:13:50.599 --> 00:13:52.719 And again, he began to realize this. 00:13:52.779 --> 00:13:54.779 This is trustworthy saying. 00:13:55.219 --> 00:13:56.659 This is the truth of God. 00:13:56.759 --> 00:13:59.179 He's speaking about the paths of the sea 00:13:59.179 --> 00:14:01.279 being these currents that are in the oceans. 00:14:01.919 --> 00:14:02.739 And the wind, 00:14:02.959 --> 00:14:05.879 how the wind has a prevailing direction it comes in. 00:14:06.679 --> 00:14:08.679 And all of these things helped him 00:14:08.679 --> 00:14:11.659 to draw charts for seafarers. 00:14:12.439 --> 00:14:13.979 And if you look at the currents, 00:14:14.139 --> 00:14:17.799 there are general currents in all the oceans of the sea 00:14:17.799 --> 00:14:20.579 that have a general direction that they go in. 00:14:20.679 --> 00:14:22.559 You think of the North Atlantic drift, 00:14:23.039 --> 00:14:26.019 that current that comes across from America and Canada, 00:14:26.519 --> 00:14:27.919 across to our own nation. 00:14:28.179 --> 00:14:30.500 When you're in that drift, it's pulling you along. 00:14:31.019 --> 00:14:32.279 It's helping you to go fast. 00:14:32.339 --> 00:14:33.459 If you're going against it, 00:14:33.460 --> 00:14:35.139 it's slowing you down. 00:14:35.580 --> 00:14:39.280 And there is God speaking of these things in his word. 00:14:39.360 --> 00:14:42.340 And this man realized it and made up charts 00:14:42.340 --> 00:14:44.139 that showed it to seafarers. 00:14:45.660 --> 00:14:47.400 God's word is trustworthy. 00:14:47.600 --> 00:14:51.340 That's just something that seems a little maybe simple to us. 00:14:51.720 --> 00:14:55.139 But every word that God speaks is trustworthy. 00:14:55.139 --> 00:14:58.899 So when you think of words like in John, 00:14:59.019 --> 00:15:01.720 the word became flesh and dwelt among us, 00:15:02.419 --> 00:15:03.419 it is trustworthy. 00:15:04.120 --> 00:15:06.559 Christ Jesus came into this world. 00:15:06.939 --> 00:15:10.399 When you think of reading of Jesus dying on the cross, 00:15:10.480 --> 00:15:11.379 it is trustworthy. 00:15:12.120 --> 00:15:15.500 Because he died on the cross for sinners such as we are. 00:15:15.500 --> 00:15:19.960 And so Paul is speaking from his own experience here 00:15:19.960 --> 00:15:22.059 that the gospel, the word of God, 00:15:22.179 --> 00:15:24.200 is all trustworthy. 00:15:25.580 --> 00:15:29.179 Through experience, he has realized it for himself. 00:15:30.220 --> 00:15:32.759 Is that what you can say today? 00:15:33.360 --> 00:15:37.000 Is this word of God trustworthy to you? 00:15:37.940 --> 00:15:41.299 Because it is what speaks about our greatest need 00:15:41.299 --> 00:15:42.899 in this world, 00:15:42.899 --> 00:15:46.959 which is a savior who is Christ the Lord. 00:15:47.659 --> 00:15:50.139 So the word of God is trustworthy. 00:15:50.919 --> 00:15:53.240 The second thing we see here is Paul says 00:15:53.240 --> 00:15:56.279 it's deserving of full acceptance. 00:15:56.860 --> 00:15:59.500 Deserving of full acceptance. 00:15:59.679 --> 00:16:01.120 So before he actually comes 00:16:01.120 --> 00:16:03.720 to what the trustworthy saying is, 00:16:03.779 --> 00:16:07.240 he says it is worthy of full acceptance. 00:16:07.460 --> 00:16:08.799 It needs to be accepted. this message is going to be? 00:16:19.519 --> 00:16:20.960 This trustworthy saying? 00:16:21.039 --> 00:16:22.860 He's saying the hearer, 00:16:22.980 --> 00:16:24.039 the one who hears it, 00:16:24.659 --> 00:16:27.879 needs to listen and needs to respond. 00:16:28.980 --> 00:16:31.799 Needs to accept this word. 00:16:32.779 --> 00:16:36.659 It is deserving of full acceptance. 00:16:36.659 --> 00:16:40.299 He is speaking about as one who heard 00:16:40.299 --> 00:16:41.899 the word of God. 00:16:42.519 --> 00:16:44.879 But not just heard it in the sense of 00:16:44.879 --> 00:16:47.799 he listened and did nothing to him. 00:16:48.419 --> 00:16:51.339 But he heard it in light of what it was really saying. 00:16:51.439 --> 00:16:53.459 The warnings it was giving. 00:16:54.779 --> 00:16:57.839 We all get warnings in our lives. 00:16:58.179 --> 00:17:00.720 We see it often at this time of year. 00:17:00.860 --> 00:17:02.079 Heavy rain warnings. 00:17:02.779 --> 00:17:03.500 Gale warnings. 00:17:03.500 --> 00:17:06.279 We hear of them and sometimes we pay attention. 00:17:06.980 --> 00:17:09.180 But other times we choose to ignore them. 00:17:10.359 --> 00:17:11.980 There are many warning signs, 00:17:12.519 --> 00:17:14.339 excuse me, that you see around us. 00:17:15.180 --> 00:17:17.339 One of the ones I often see and think, 00:17:17.420 -->
