There is no one who is able 00:22:44.140 --> 00:23:01.520 to redeem a soul from death. None can pay to God the ransom to prolong another's breath. 00:23:01.520 --> 00:23:12.860 To redeem a life is costly. None sufficient price can pay, 00:23:12.859 --> 00:23:35.859 so that one should live a mortal, free forever from decay. For we all can see life ending. Wise and foolish, all will die. 00:23:35.859 --> 00:23:46.859 They must leave their wealth to others. None can death's demand defy. 00:23:46.859 --> 00:24:04.819 We'd like us now to turn back and consider the two passages that we've read together. Mainly, we'll have a focus on the passage of Jesus and Zacchaeus, 00:24:04.819 --> 00:24:11.819 but we'll also tie in what we read about the rich young ruler, or the rich ruler. 00:24:11.819 --> 00:24:23.720 Now, as you know, all of us are different. People are different in many different ways. 00:24:23.720 --> 00:24:37.339 But we are guilty, I suppose, of making assumptions about different classes of people, and we can maybe categorize and separate people into these different classes. 00:24:37.339 --> 00:24:44.339 Maybe we're expecting the same behavior from that certain type of person. 00:24:44.339 --> 00:24:56.339 And there is that phrase that we all probably know, that we tar people with the same brush because of these assumptions that we make on these types of people in our head. 00:24:56.339 --> 00:25:04.339 But, as I'm sure we've all learned, it's poor judgment for us to do this sort of thing. 00:25:04.339 --> 00:25:11.339 And tonight we read about two men, who probably were in the same sort of class. 00:25:11.339 --> 00:25:18.339 They're two rich men, and they have both come to see Jesus. 00:25:18.339 --> 00:25:30.339 One is described as a ruler, and the other we have the name of as Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector. 00:25:30.339 --> 00:25:42.339 But though they are both rich men, maybe in the same class, we can see that by the accounts we have here recorded for us, 00:25:42.339 --> 00:25:47.339 they are very different actions that contradict each other. 00:25:47.339 --> 00:25:55.339 And we have before us two totally different men, with two totally different hearts. 00:25:55.339 --> 00:26:06.339 So before we consider Zacchaeus, I briefly just want to look at the ruler, the rich ruler, who he was. 00:26:06.339 --> 00:26:13.339 And what we have before us, well, it is likely that this rich ruler would have been someone well thought of. 00:26:13.339 --> 00:26:16.339 Someone that the people would have liked. 00:26:16.339 --> 00:26:21.339 Maybe it was someone that the people had chosen to rule them. 00:26:21.339 --> 00:26:29.339 And in all understanding from the passage that we have, that he was morally upright in keeping God's commandments. 00:26:29.339 --> 00:26:35.339 So already on appearances, he seems like he is the best of men. 00:26:35.339 --> 00:26:50.339 But really, when Jesus speaks to him, we can see that all he loved was his money, his wealth, and actually himself. 00:26:50.339 --> 00:26:59.339 We read about him going away sad, because Jesus told him to give all that wealth away to the poor. 00:26:59.339 --> 00:27:02.339 He didn't want to part with it. 00:27:02.339 --> 00:27:04.339 His heart held to it. 00:27:04.339 --> 00:27:09.339 And Jesus spoke directly to his heart. 00:27:09.339 --> 00:27:27.339 But on a wider scale, Jesus probably witnessed how so many people become so easily engrossed and obsessed with accumulating and collecting more money for themselves. 00:27:27.339 --> 00:27:34.339 And it is a temptation that we are all challenged by. 00:27:34.339 --> 00:27:47.339 And those who have this wealth, Jesus says about them that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. 00:27:47.339 --> 00:27:54.339 It is a difficulty for this type of person. 00:27:54.339 --> 00:28:01.339 And really, what we see in this man is a selfish approach to Jesus. 00:28:01.339 --> 00:28:08.339 All he is doing is seeking approval for how well he has lived. 00:28:08.339 --> 00:28:10.339 I have kept all these commandments. 00:28:10.339 --> 00:28:19.339 And he is seeking some sort of validation that he is worthy to enter the kingdom of God. 00:28:19.339 --> 00:28:24.339 His seeking is self-centered. 00:28:24.339 --> 00:28:31.339 He is seeking his own selfish approval. 00:28:31.339 --> 00:28:39.339 But Jesus addresses that selfishness and that self-centered love and says to him, 00:28:39.339 --> 00:28:41.339 Give your wealth away. 00:28:41.339 --> 00:28:44.339 The things that you love, let them go. 00:28:44.339 --> 00:28:51.339 And really what he is saying to him is, put yourself last and put others before you. 00:28:51.339 --> 00:28:55.339 But what about Zacchaeus in contrast? 00:28:55.339 --> 00:28:58.339 Well, we know he was a taxman. 00:28:58.339 --> 00:29:02.339 And not many people like the taxman. 00:29:02.339 --> 00:29:07.339 Especially when he is the chief taxman, as he was. 00:29:07.339 --> 00:29:12.339 But also, he was a chief taxman that would have been on commission. 00:29:12.339 --> 00:29:18.339 That is how we understand this chief taxman in his day to have been. 00:29:18.339 --> 00:29:24.339 So the more he could tax you, the people, the people that were around him, 00:29:24.339 --> 00:29:27.339 the more money he would make for himself. 00:29:27.339 --> 00:29:31.339 So he was obviously good at it. 00:29:31.339 --> 00:29:37.339 But he obviously had that greed and selfishness within his own heart. 00:29:37.339 --> 00:29:39.339 And that love for money. 00:29:39.339 --> 00:29:44.339 And accumulation of it that we saw in the rich ruler. 00:29:44.339 --> 00:29:51.339 But being so good at this job and the type of job that he was in, 00:29:51.339 --> 00:29:54.339 he wouldn't have been favored by men. 00:29:54.339 --> 00:29:56.339 He would have been despised by men. 00:29:56.339 --> 00:30:03.339 Because he was there to take their money away from their hearts. 00:30:03.339 --> 00:30:08.339 And so Zacchaeus was a rich man. 00:30:08.339 --> 00:30:11.339 He was a man that actually found salvation. 00:30:11.339 --> 00:30:14.339 Zacchaeus was converted. 00:30:14.339 --> 00:30:20.339 And maybe we would see that, well, he wasn't the best of men. 00:30:20.339 --> 00:30:22.339 He was a greedy man. 00:30:22.339 --> 00:30:27.339 He was probably the most unlikely candidate to be converted. 00:30:27.339 --> 00:30:35.339 But as you know yourselves, there are many living examples in this building 00:30:35.339 --> 00:30:41.339 of unlikely candidates that have been converted by the grace of God 00:30:41.339 --> 00:30:45.339 when they met with Jesus. 00:30:45.339 --> 00:30:51.339 Our lives were turned upside down. 00:30:51.339 --> 00:30:56.339 And a heart's desire was turned on its head. 00:30:56.339 --> 00:31:02.339 Jesus here is displaying to the people that, you know what? 00:31:02.339 --> 00:31:06.339 The camel can go through the eye of the needle. 00:31:06.339 --> 00:31:09.339 But you can't do it. 00:31:09.339 --> 00:31:11.339 It is the work of God. 00:31:11.339 --> 00:31:20.339 And what we see in Zacchaeus is that work of God. 00:31:20.339 --> 00:31:25.339 A man being saved from sin. 00:31:25.339 --> 00:31:32.339 But these things that are impossible with men are possible with God. 00:31:32.339 --> 00:31:38.339 I wonder are there any unlikely candidates here tonight? 00:31:38.339 --> 00:31:45.339 The last person you would expect to be converted and to follow Jesus. 00:31:45.339 --> 00:31:50.339 And it may not even be that you are seeking Jesus. 00:31:50.339 --> 00:31:54.339 Regardless of why you are here. 00:31:54.339 --> 00:31:58.339 Salvation is God's work. 00:31:58.339 --> 00:32:01.339 It is not ours. 00:32:01.339 --> 00:32:06.339 It is the Son of Man that came to seek and to save the lost. 00:32:06.339 --> 00:32:13.339 And in light of this background, I hope that we can look at this amazing encounter we have with Jesus and Zacchaeus. 00:32:13.339 --> 00:32:18.339 Firstly, we see in Zacchaeus a desire. 00:32:18.339 --> 00:32:21.339 Then we see a delight in receiving Jesus. 00:32:21.339 --> 00:32:29.339 And then we see a devotion that he has to this new heart that is put within him. 00:32:29.339 --> 00:32:37.339 So a desire, a delight and a devotion in Zacchaeus as we look at this passage in chapter 19. 00:32:37.339 --> 00:32:43.339 And you look at there and you see, well yes, Zacchaeus had a desire to come to Jesus. 00:32:43.339 --> 00:32:46.339 There is an interest there to see this man. 00:32:46.339 --> 00:32:51.339 What it was, we are not entirely sure. 00:32:51.339 --> 00:32:55.339 It is not clear to us why he had this interest. 00:32:55.339 --> 00:33:02.339 We can notice that Jesus has obviously caused a stir when he entered Jericho there. 00:33:02.339 --> 00:33:05.339 And the crowds were around him. 00:33:09.339 --> 00:33:19.339 We can't pinpoint any reason of why he was interested other than maybe, well, he might have just been curious to see what was going on. 00:33:19.339 --> 00:33:25.339 Maybe he had heard about this man, Jesus, and the miracles he had done, the people he had healed. 00:33:25.339 --> 00:33:30.339 He heard he was coming to town and thought, well, maybe I'll go along and see him. 00:33:30.339 --> 00:33:32.339 Just out of curiosity. 00:33:32.339 --> 00:33:35.339 To see if what people are saying about him is true. 00:33:38.339 --> 00:33:43.339 But whatever or whatever gave him the interest to be there. 00:33:43.339 --> 00:33:48.339 He knew he had an opportunity to see Jesus that day. 00:33:48.339 --> 00:33:53.339 And he was not going to let that opportunity pass him by. 00:33:53.339 --> 00:34:03.339 And with that in mind, as he comes to see this man, there's an obstacle facing him straight away. 00:34:03.339 --> 00:34:09.340 We see that he's too weak to see Jesus past the crowds. 00:34:09.340 --> 00:34:14.340 He's too short to set his eyes on this man, Jesus. 00:34:15.340 --> 00:34:17.340 But does it deter him? 00:34:17.340 --> 00:34:18.340 No. 00:34:19.340 --> 00:34:20.340 Does he give up? 00:34:20.340 --> 00:34:21.340 I can't see him. 00:34:21.340 --> 00:34:23.340 I'm not going to get to see him. 00:34:23.340 --> 00:34:24.340 He doesn't give up. 00:34:26.340 --> 00:34:32.340 He's so curious to see this man and see if all that he has heard is true about him. 00:34:33.340 --> 00:34:37.340 He probably thought to himself, right, how can I see him? 00:34:38.340 --> 00:34:40.340 What must I do to see him? 00:34:40.340 --> 00:34:42.340 And where can I see him? 00:34:43.340 --> 00:34:48.340 He's thoughtful in this desire that is in his heart to see Jesus. 00:34:50.340 --> 00:34:54.340 There's an importance to this desire for some reason unknown to us. 00:34:55.340 --> 00:35:02.340 And we read there in verse 4 that he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him. 00:35:03.340 --> 00:35:07.340 That's what he had to do to see Jesus. 00:35:07.340 --> 00:35:10.340 And when I was looking this study in this passage, 00:35:11.340 --> 00:35:17.340 apparently in that day that it was not culturally respectable for a man to climb a tree. 00:35:18.340 --> 00:35:20.340 Or for a grown adult to be seen climbing a tree. 00:35:21.340 --> 00:35:23.340 It would be considered something childish. 00:35:24.340 --> 00:35:25.340 Something a kid's place. 00:35:25.340 --> 00:35:27.340 Something the children would do. 00:35:27.340 --> 00:35:34.340 Now if you think about Zacchaeus as a chief tax collector, everyone would have known him. 00:35:35.340 --> 00:35:37.340 Everyone would have recognized him. 00:35:37.340 --> 00:35:41.340 And maybe they're laughing at him. 00:35:41.340 --> 00:35:46.340 Because he's climbing this tree and they're thinking, what's wrong with Zacchaeus? 00:35:48.340 --> 00:35:49.340 What's he doing? 00:35:50.340 --> 00:35:52.340 Pretending to be a child. 00:35:53.340 --> 00:35:54.340 But it didn't matter. 00:35:55.340 --> 00:35:57.340 It didn't matter what anyone thought. 00:35:58.340 --> 00:36:01.340 He wanted to see Jesus. 00:36:01.340 --> 00:36:05.340 And there's something in that. 00:36:06.340 --> 00:36:10.340 Maybe you have a curiosity about Jesus. 00:36:12.340 --> 00:36:17.340 Maybe you've seen people making a stir about that man, Jesus. 00:36:18.340 --> 00:36:21.340 And you think, what is it? 00:36:21.340 --> 00:36:25.340 Maybe you know people that follow Jesus. 00:36:25.340 --> 00:36:27.340 Just as the people did in Jericho. 00:36:27.340 --> 00:36:28.340 They were making a stir. 00:36:28.340 --> 00:36:30.340 They were following Jesus. 00:36:30.340 --> 00:36:32.340 And maybe you're looking at it and going, 00:36:33.340 --> 00:36:34.340 you're looking at people in their lives and going, 00:36:35.340 --> 00:36:38.340 what are they seeking? 00:36:39.340 --> 00:36:40.340 What are they following? 00:36:41.340 --> 00:36:43.340 Because I ain't seen it. 00:36:43.340 --> 00:36:50.340 But maybe there's something in you that recognizes, 00:36:51.340 --> 00:36:56.340 that you wish you could see what that person sees. 00:36:57.340 --> 00:37:02.340 You've seen how maybe the person you know that believes in Christ lives their life. 00:37:03.340 --> 00:37:07.340 And you think, maybe there is something to it. 00:37:08.340 --> 00:37:09.340 I can't see it. 00:37:09.340 --> 00:37:13.340 But I wish I knew what they understood about this man. 00:37:15.340 --> 00:37:19.340 Now, if you ever show a conscious interest in Jesus, 00:37:20.340 --> 00:37:22.340 and you seek him, 00:37:23.340 --> 00:37:27.340 you can be sure that the devil will be right in front of you. 00:37:28.340 --> 00:37:33.340 And he will try and hinder any interest you have to see Jesus. 00:37:34.340 --> 00:37:36.340 It will test your heart. 00:37:36.340 --> 00:37:41.340 Just like Zacchaeus came out of curiosity. 00:37:42.340 --> 00:37:46.340 Was the right heart to see who Jesus was? 00:37:47.340 --> 00:37:49.340 Maybe he didn't know what to expect. 00:37:51.340 --> 00:37:53.340 He just had a heart to see Jesus. 00:37:54.340 --> 00:37:56.340 But he couldn't. 00:37:57.340 --> 00:38:04.340 And it was a test to him to see how much he wanted to really understand who Jesus was. 00:38:04.340 --> 00:38:09.340 How much do we want to see Jesus tonight? 00:38:10.340 --> 00:38:14.340 Whether we're here or whether we're watching online. 00:38:15.340 --> 00:38:17.340 Whether we've seen things from a distance, as it were. 00:38:18.340 --> 00:38:20.340 As Zacchaeus was. 00:38:20.340 --> 00:38:23.340 Maybe you don't want to be seen coming to church. 00:38:23.340 --> 00:38:28.340 Maybe you think people will laugh at you. 00:38:29.340 --> 00:38:30.340 Because you're coming to church. 00:38:31.340 --> 00:38:34.340 Maybe you think you're kind of simple. 00:38:35.340 --> 00:38:36.340 You're like a child. 00:38:37.340 --> 00:38:39.340 Coming to church. 00:38:40.340 --> 00:38:43.340 And looking for this man, Jesus. 00:38:43.340 --> 00:38:49.340 But Jesus also spoke in chapter 18. 00:38:50.340 --> 00:38:54.340 About those who come to receive the kingdom of God. 00:38:55.340 --> 00:38:56.340 Those who shall enter eternity. 00:38:57.340 --> 00:38:59.340 Must receive it like a child. 00:39:00.340 --> 00:39:03.340 Isn't it funny that Jesus had just been teaching. 00:39:03.340 --> 00:39:07.340 That you must receive the gospel as a child. 00:39:09.340 --> 00:39:11.340 And then we have this account of the rich ruler. 00:39:12.340 --> 00:39:13.340 And then we meet Zacchaeus. 00:39:14.340 --> 00:39:16.340 Who is like a child. 00:39:17.340 --> 00:39:18.340 Up a tree. 00:39:19.340 --> 00:39:20.340 Seeking Jesus. 00:39:20.340 --> 00:39:27.340 What he did was he placed himself. 00:39:28.340 --> 00:39:30.340 Regardless of what anyone else thought. 00:39:31.340 --> 00:39:32.340 Where he would see him. 00:39:33.340 --> 00:39:34.340 Intentional. 00:39:35.340 --> 00:39:37.340 That he came to seek Jesus. 00:39:38.340 --> 00:39:40.340 And a place where Jesus would pass by. 00:39:41.340 --> 00:39:44.340 And it is in the reading and preaching. 00:39:45.340 --> 00:39:47.340 Of the word of God. 00:39:47.340 --> 00:39:50.340 Where Jesus passes us by. 00:39:51.340 --> 00:39:53.340 Where Jesus is seen. 00:39:54.340 --> 00:39:55.340 For us today. 00:39:58.340 --> 00:40:00.340 Jesus is on the pages of scripture. 00:40:01.340 --> 00:40:04.340 And this is where we can find him. 00:40:05.340 --> 00:40:06.340 If our hearts desire. 00:40:07.340 --> 00:40:08.340 Is to see him. 00:40:12.340 --> 00:40:13.340 But as Zacchaeus came.
