just to shelve that in your mind for a moment, because I want you to notice before anything else that the passage is organised around two fairly simple and straightforward instructions. 00:02:54.300 --> 00:03:48.639 Paul is his older mentor, dying in prison in Rome. 00:03:48.639 --> 00:03:56.719 And he is concerned that Timothy might be confused about the dynamic of ministry in the time in which they live. 00:03:57.319 --> 00:04:00.419 And so he needs to know, he needs to be clued up, fully briefed. 00:04:00.679 --> 00:04:02.919 Because, as it turns out, it's going to be tough. 00:04:03.000 --> 00:04:04.039 Look down at verse 1. 00:04:04.419 --> 00:04:09.259 But mark this, there will be terrible times in the last days. 00:04:09.259 --> 00:04:18.060 Paul's point is that the last days, days which in Bible language are the days between the ascension of the Lord Jesus and his final return. 00:04:18.639 --> 00:04:23.279 In other words, today, these days, the days that Paul was living in and the days we are in now. 00:04:23.779 --> 00:04:30.219 In those days, there will be terrible or fierce or troubled or grievous times. 00:04:31.680 --> 00:04:34.579 The dynamic of the passage is perhaps quite easy to understand. 00:04:34.579 --> 00:04:36.759 Paul is warning Timothy. 00:04:36.759 --> 00:04:41.519 Think of like a seasoned mother speaking to a pregnant woman. 00:04:42.500 --> 00:04:46.980 There are terrible times ahead, she says, with a knowing look. 00:04:46.980 --> 00:04:54.439 Or a GCSE student looking to one of the year eights going, there are terrible times ahead. 00:04:55.199 --> 00:05:06.219 And Paul seems to think, doesn't he, that there is a genuine danger of naivety for Timothy and for those in Christian ministry and for all of us in the Christian life. 00:05:06.960 --> 00:05:13.320 Specifically, it seems a naivety which expects that everything will be a lot easier than it actually turns out to be. 00:05:15.060 --> 00:05:20.440 Maybe, you know, oh, if I do everything right, then everything will work out and everything will be straightforward. 00:05:20.560 --> 00:05:22.640 But Paul says, no, no, no, that's not what it's like. 00:05:23.280 --> 00:05:31.940 Paul says, I want you to know, good churches, faithful ministers, good ministry will always face difficulty and challenge, he says. 00:05:31.939 --> 00:05:34.579 Now, we do need to be careful. 00:05:34.740 --> 00:05:35.420 Look down at the verse. 00:05:35.540 --> 00:05:39.399 It says that not all of the last days will be terrible. 00:05:40.040 --> 00:05:47.439 It's not the idea that church life is always a disaster or that ministry will never be fruitful or have a point to it. 00:05:48.240 --> 00:05:49.339 That's not what Paul's saying. 00:05:49.399 --> 00:05:51.399 If he wasn't, you know, you might as well give up, mind you. 00:05:51.939 --> 00:05:56.720 Well, the point is that in the last days, you won't be able to avoid terrible times. 00:05:56.720 --> 00:06:02.620 You know, there will be exceptions, but still there are terrible times to come and you won't be able to avoid them. 00:06:03.000 --> 00:06:06.060 These are, if you like, the days of terrible times, says Paul. 00:06:06.780 --> 00:06:13.840 In fact, according to next week's passage, if you glance down at verse 13, you are told it's going to go from bad to worse, not better to better. 00:06:13.839 --> 00:06:18.939 Which means, I think, if anything, you and I have even more reason to listen to this than Timothy did. 00:06:20.279 --> 00:06:30.139 So just there, before we even get any further, just think about this for us as a church or for me as one of the pastors or for you as a community group leader or a Sunday school teacher, 00:06:30.539 --> 00:06:35.959 for you as a parent or an 00:07:02.019 --> 00:07:12.099 Because the truth is that God, in his providence and in his wisdom, has set church up in such a way that good ministry will always face difficulty. 00:07:12.699 --> easier to read the Bible together, but actually it's turned out that it's made it even more difficult. 00:07:55.939 --> 00:08:01.320 You thought that merging two churches together would solve all of our problems, but it's brought new ones and different ones instead. 00:08:02.840 --> 00:08:05.060 But such is faithful ministry, right? 00:08:05.920 --> 00:08:06.720 Don't give up. 00:08:06.820 --> sort of a general difficulty of ministry, but rather a specific cause of terrible times. 00:08:17.919 --> 00:08:21.299 And you'll notice that the cause of these terrible times is verse two. hearts in these last days. 00:08:36.519 --> 00:08:39.299 Now, I think Paul has got what you might call flow here, right? 00:08:39.679 --> 00:08:41.319 These are just tripping off his tongue. 00:08:41.860 --> 00:08:44.879 And there is some overlap, and there are some themes in these verses, 00:08:44.879 --> 00:08:49.720 like the attitude to oneself, or view of authority, or relationship difficulties. 00:08:50.199 --> 00:08:52.299 But I don't think really, as you look down at the list, 00:08:52.379 --> 00:08:55.799 it's not really that you're supposed to notice the organisation of the list. 00:08:56.179 --> 00:08:57.980 Rather, you're to notice this is overwhelming. 00:08:58.740 --> 00:09:00.740 This is just coming at me, and at me, and at me. 00:09:00.819 --> 00:09:02.620 This is Look out for it. 00:22:16.539 --> 00:22:20.919 I think that the obscenity of the prosperity gospel preacher 00:22:20.919 --> 00:22:24.740 is not just how much money they make, 00:22:24.740 --> 00:22:28.500 but it's that they take it from the poorest and the most vulnerable, isn't it? 00:22:30.420 --> 00:22:34.079 Targeting their promises of, you know, abundant life, 00:22:35.079 --> 00:22:38.019 fulfillment, everything you could ever want. 00:22:38.440 --> 00:22:41.339 Targeting those promises to people who are desperate, 00:22:42.759 --> 00:22:45.279 who will listen because they are lonely, 00:22:45.779 --> 00:22:48.839 they're unemployed, they're homeless, they're desperate, whatever it is. 00:22:49.440 --> 00:22:52.140 Promising them the worldly treasure that they long for so much 00:22:52.140 --> 00:22:53.620 and they have no right to promise to them. 00:22:53.619 --> 00:22:56.979 They're like Jean and Jambra in verse 8, 00:22:57.119 --> 00:23:00.579 who are probably the Egyptian magicians who opposed Moses 00:23:00.579 --> 00:23:03.619 by copying the plagues with their magic arts. 00:23:04.279 --> 00:23:07.899 These false teachers oppose Paul and Timothy. 00:23:08.659 --> 00:23:10.959 But like Jean and Jambra's were found out eventually, 00:23:11.139 --> 00:23:13.579 so will these men be, who according to verse 9, 00:23:14.079 --> 00:23:16.339 their true colors will show themselves eventually. 00:23:17.819 --> 00:23:19.199 This is fascinating, isn't it? 00:23:19.479 --> 00:23:20.539 Do you see what's happening here? 00:23:20.539 --> 00:23:24.319 The false teachers are, if you like, they're building a false world. 00:23:26.039 --> 00:23:29.960 So the world of the false teachers has them at the center. 00:23:30.759 --> 00:23:32.359 And you know that's not the real world, right? 00:23:32.359 --> 00:23:35.000 Because the real world has God at the center, not the false teacher. 00:23:35.399 --> 00:23:39.980 And so what happens over time is that that world crumbles because it's unreal. 00:23:39.980 --> 00:23:44.980 And so it's really important that Timothy's not ignorant of the false teacher, 00:23:44.980 --> 00:23:50.240 but also he's not to be over-invested in it or in trying to sort it out himself, 00:23:50.240 --> 00:23:55.400 because it will sort itself out eventually, because that world is a false world. 00:23:56.200 --> 00:23:58.500 Time will demonstrate the folly of these people, 00:23:58.940 --> 00:24:03.039 because the world has, well, their fake world doesn't exist, 00:24:03.160 --> 00:24:04.799 and reality has a habit of biting. 00:24:05.639 --> 00:24:07.599 And so in time, people will see through these people. 00:24:07.720 --> 00:24:11.039 You know, Jean and Jean, their snakes got eaten by Aaron's snakes. 00:24:11.619 --> 00:24:12.740 People were able to see. 00:24:14.159 --> 00:24:15.319 So here's what's going on then. 00:24:15.399 --> 00:24:18.359 God has allowed false teaching and false teachers in the church. 00:24:18.680 --> 00:24:22.460 He has allowed people in the church to be lovers of pleasure and not lovers of him. 00:24:23.180 --> 00:24:25.339 And you and I need to be aware of that, not naive, 00:24:25.579 --> 00:24:28.480 not willing to follow anyone who comes and says, hey, follow this way. 00:24:28.480 --> 00:24:33.519 We also need to understand, don't we, that God has set limits for that false teaching. 00:24:33.660 --> 00:24:36.380 It will only go so far before it unravels. 00:24:37.380 --> 00:24:40.960 I wonder, as we finish, if you could think with me, just why? 00:25:01.099 --> 00:25:04.539 That's what Christian organizations put on their social media accounts 00:25:04.539 --> 00:25:06.099 in order to generate enthusiasm. 00:25:06.579 --> 00:25:07.599 Awesome blessings are coming. 00:25:09.099 --> 00:25:11.420 But Paul doesn't seem to think we need warning about blessing. 00:25:12.259 --> 00:25:17.359 He seems to think we need warning about a surprising dynamic of false teaching in the church. 00:25:17.480 --> 00:25:17.740 Why? 00:25:19.799 --> 00:25:23.619 Well, at one level, we need to say we don't know why God has allowed it to be this way, 00:25:24.420 --> 00:25:26.960 why God in his wisdom has organized it like that. 00:25:26.960 --> 00:25:28.180 He doesn't owe us an explanation. 00:25:29.819 --> 00:25:32.400 But I think this is to borrow from next week's passage, really. 00:25:32.600 --> 00:25:38.740 The reality is that the darkness of this false teaching in the church makes the light of gospel 00:25:38.740 --> 00:25:40.759 preaching even more clear. 00:25:40.759 --> 00:25:42.599 Look down at verse 10. 00:25:42.599 --> 00:25:53.459 You, however, know all about my teaching, says Paul, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecution, sufferings. 00:25:53.799 --> 00:25:58.179 What kind of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra, the persecutions I endured, 00:25:58.259 --> 00:25:59.799 yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. 00:25:59.799 --> 00:26:04.440 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 00:26:04.619 --> 00:26:09.339 while evildoers and imposters will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 00:26:10.159 --> 00:26:11.000 Here's the point. 00:26:12.299 --> 00:26:15.259 This is how we know the truth in the dark world, 00:26:15.740 --> 00:26:20.419 because the light of the truth is the opposite of the darkness of false teaching. 00:26:22.139 --> 00:26:26.019 Yet Paul is calling Timothy to genuine light-giving ministry. 00:26:26.019 --> 00:26:32.039 Of course, he's calling him away from these temptations for self-worship and self-love and idolatry. 00:26:32.619 --> 00:26:36.960 But he is calling him to a genuine ministry that lays itself down, 00:26:37.180 --> 00:26:40.119 that, like Paul, knows about suffering, that endures. 00:26:40.519 --> 00:26:43.359 So that in a world of self-interested charlatans, 00:26:43.759 --> 00:26:49.740 Christians should look out for pastors with private jets and smooth suits and bright lights. 00:26:50.460 --> 00:26:52.099 They should be warned about them. 00:26:52.099 --> 00:26:56.819 And in the darkness of those things, 00:26:57.559 --> 00:27:00.359 you should look out for a pastor who has tears in his eyes, 00:27:00.959 --> 00:27:03.980 who's weeping over his weakness and his brokenness, 00:27:04.480 --> 00:27:06.799 and the brokenness and the weakness in your life, 00:27:07.619 --> 00:27:10.259 who walks with a limp from the suffering of ministry, 00:27:11.059 --> 00:27:13.339 who's wounded for standing up for the truth, 00:27:14.459 --> 00:27:16.179 willing to suffer for your good, 00:27:16.259 --> 00:27:19.399 not wanting to make you suffer for their good. 00:27:19.400 --> 00:27:24.480 Let me try and illustrate how this works. 00:27:25.380 --> 00:27:31.960 My understanding is that the gas that would come out of the gas pipe in your house 00:27:31.960 --> 00:27:35.880 is naturally odourless, right?
